RPG Thread V is really...grindy
Not really. NIS, Atlus, XSeed are still cranking them out.

Shame on you, Atlus. Remaking and porting games that are barely 2 years old? Knights in the Nightmare, Yggida Union, P3 Portable, Riveria... I know the economy's tough, but at least give us some new games..
While the genre thrives on portables, it's getting very dim on current gen consoles. But I'm just trying to be dramatic.
I will be starting my first RPG in a longtime and need advice. Figure I'll stick to 360/PS3, but I could go PSP or hooking up the PS2. I burnt out on RPGs several years ago, but kept buying them impulsively. My choices are as follows:

FFXIII
Tales of Vesperia
Valkyria Chronicles
Blue Dragon
Disgaea III
Dragon Age Origins
Oblivion
Sacred 2
Divinity II
Fable II

PS2/PSP
Persona PSP
Persona 3 FES
Persona 4
SMT Digital Devil Saga 1&2
SMT Nocturne
SMT Devil Summoner
SMT Devil Summoner 2
FFXII
Aterlier Iris Eternal Mana (halfway through)
Tales of the Abyss

Only thing to add is that I like getting achievements for games on the 360 :bomb:. Probably a trait that drew me into the collect everything do everything part of RPGs in the first place.

I think my top 3 choices (without hooking up the PS2 on my Plasma) are Tales of Vesperia, Valkyria Chronicles, and FFXIII
They are all very different so it depends on what you're in the mood for. If those 3 are your most interested picks then I'd go with FFXIII. Can't go wrong with a lot of what you listed though.

Man, Atlus is really never going to move to PS360, are they? No sign of SMT on home consoles, and they just announced 3 for the 3DS.

they are publishing at least...Demon's Souls and 3DDGH on the PS3 and some absolute crap I can't even remember on the 360.

This depresses me. Same with Konami and the Suikoden series. All my favorite JRPGs are destined to stay on portables.

Even though I'm not much of a fan anymore even the Kingdom Hearts series keeps pumping out portable games while shunning the next gen.

I meant Atlus Japan. The real Atlus. Demon's Souls was developed by SCE, I think, and 3DDGH was probably Sting or some crap.
Not really. NIS, Atlus, XSeed are still cranking them out.
This is EXACTLY the problem. With the exception of the SMT series and arguably Etrian Odyssey, there is NOTHING good that these companies churn out.
Is Persona a linked series or can I start wherever?
I'll say you could start anywhere. However Persona 1 & 2 are somewhat linked. There are several returning characters with references to the first game. I would personally recommend to play P1 before P2, however it isn't absolutely necessary. Think Suikoden 1 & 2.

As for P3 & P4 you can do whatever.
I'm fine with all the portable JRPGs. Getting some grinding done is a great way to kill time while on the train.
I'm fine with them too, especially on PSP. I like the high fidelity gfx.

I haven't played a DS RPG since Nostalgia. At least there's DQIX coming out.

I picked up Legend of Heroes III recently, but probably won't play it for awhile.
Legend of Heroes - how generic can you get?

There were some decent RPG showings at E3. Stuff like Fallout New Vegas and Fable III looked pretty good. As did The Witcher 2 and of course, The Old Republic!

The Witcher 2 can't come out soon enough. The first game was absurdly good, and the sequel looks to be even better. This is a real WRPG, not watered-down nonsense like Oblivion or Fable.

If you play Persona 4, you won't want to go play P3 right after it.

I'd say try to finish Atelier Iris before you start another RPG. That way you can decide if you want to finish, trade it out, or bury it in the backlog once again.

Agree. Supposedly Persona 3 portable fixed a lot of problems so it will be more like Persona 4. However at some point you would want to finish the Answer which is only on FES

From Namco's twitt

"No Tales just yet, but definitely not out of the question. Nothing on One Piece."

Hope that means somehting

I really want a new Tales game or I'll have to resort to replaying ones I've already beaten. My backlog can't handle me doing that.

Does anyone know, does it matter what order you play the Atelier Iris series in? I have the first and the third game and I was wondering if the stories build on each other, and also, assuming order doesn't matter, if one is better than the others?

I really loved the first Mana Khemia game (haven't played the second yet, but I probably should); what I liked most in that game was that synthesizing the items was also how your characters advanced. I'm not sure if any of the Atelier games are like that, it seemed like the first one you just used synthesis to craft items (though I haven't played it, so I'm not certain), but if any of them were closer to Mana Khemia I think I'd like them more.

So any suggestions on the Atelier Iris series?
So any suggestions on the Atelier Iris series?
Atelier Iris - Slow battle system and it had fun NPC interactions, otherwise fairly enjoyable I suppose. It'll be more difficult to play this after you've played faster paced GUST battle systems.

Atelier Iris 2 - Much better battle system, but the NPC interactions were down a notch. Story was still somewhat enjoyable.

Atelier Iris 3 - Best battle system of the three, but the NPC interaction was fairly non-existent compared to the last two. It is also quest based story progression, whether you like that kind of thing or not.

Personally I enjoyed the first two, but the third I never really finished because I don't really enjoy quest based story progression in RPGs. As for a continual story between them all? Nope, they can be played independently. Crafting is still heavy in all Atelier games, but don't expect it to be quite as refined as Mana Khemia. Unfortunately character advancement isn't the same as the Khemia series.

I would say try to do Iris 1 first because it'll be more difficult to do it down the road since it's slower paced and also you already have it. It had several amusing elements in it that I rather enjoyed and was sad to see gone from future GUST games.

See, I really remember enjoying the first Atelier Iris game but then when I tried playing Mana Khemia earlier this year I couldn't finish it. Mana just felt like it dragged on and on with little to now story progression. One whole chapter was like 5+ hours of gameplay just to pick up an alien character who I had no intention of using.

I did not know such a thread existed.

So.

I got REALLY bored with my Dragon Age: Origins playthrough as a Rogue. Should I start something else?
Been playing Grandia. I don't remember it bring so easy.
Yeah, it's not really a difficult game. Some fights here and there should still be somewhat challenging, specifically a few boss battles. Not so much that they deal a lot of damage but instead because they prevent you from doing damage due to cancellations out the ass.

I found playing an archer rogue to be fun. The dual-weilding rogue was pretty boring to me as well.

However, the best playthrough I had was with my 2-handed Dwarf Warrior. Shit died SO fast. Was pretty fun too. Just don't re-roll a mage in the game. They are incredibly more boring.

It depends on your play style, but yeah, mages are ridiculously over powered. It is fun to just roll in and nuke everything though

I normally don't mind micro-managing, but the keeping in behind the enemies to take advantage of the Backstab just got on my nerves after a while. I did, on the other hand, want to make a warrior of some sort, seeing as they tore everything up without having to be positioned or worry too much about having drawn aggro... Did you still need a tank and a healer after that?

Do you need to play the Grandias in order to get the most enjoyment out of the series? I have 2 but I was considering the PSN version of Grandia soon.

Just finished my paragon mass effect play through. Now I need to get the second one. It really was the best rpg I have ever played. The gunplay was weak but it sure beats boring turn based combat.

I found myself still needing a healer on a warrior, but I didn't use a tank at all.

My main group was My 2H Dwarf Warrior, Wynne as my healer, Leliana as a ranged rogue and Morrigan as a damage caster. It was pretty simple for the most parts. It got hectic on some boss fights, but nothing I couldn't handle.

Man, I dont think it matters how good or complete the P3 experience is without FES. I cant stand playing games where you dont control your characters. I'm probably gonna have to go PSP, and then read spoilers or something later. Maybe a youtube playthrough of it.

In other news, I started Breath of Fire 4 again, after starting it and getting sidetracked years ago.
Nah, they're self-contained. Though if you can get any enjoyment out of Grandia III past a certain point... well, that's amazing.
Very true. Grandia 3 started out okay, but got boring fast.

Yeah, I liked the first few hours, even though it was a little weird that the main character was fighting alongside his (fine as hell) mom. But when the adventure really starts, it just destroys itself. The combat system is definitely fun, but it wasn't enough to save a game that was downright bad in so many other areas.

Come to think of it, that's how I look at all the Grandia games

Though I'd like to try the first game on the Saturn.

I wonder if developers for JRPGs are stuck in the mindframe of anime presentation, and that sort of look is more viable on handhelds instead of powerful HD consoles?

I've never thought about this for more than a few minutes, and haven't researched it any. I'm kind of bouncing this out to you guys; I'm not as well versed in JRPG as you are.

Grandia 1's story is solid, but a little childish. Unlike Grandia 3 it gets better the more you play.

Yuki's mom looked way too young. Anime generally makes people look like children anyways, but I initially thought she was Yuki's older sister. The other playable characters (Ulf, Dahna) are some of the most forgettable & bland characters ever created. They have very little importance to the overall story and even less character interaction. Lastly the story dropped the ball when Yuki finally met his hero (Schmidt) It was the last thread of story I clung to. I felt like everything built up to this moment only to predictably kill him off. Lame story telling.

Oh yeah, Alfina is worse than Estelle when it come to a central female character.

i can't think of a JRPG that isn't somehow anime-styled (whether it's the art, dialogue, or story.) Except demon's souls (depending on whether you consider "JRPG" as a genre itself or a term for any RPG that comes from Japan.)

Mana Khemia is a pretty solid example of that.
Mana Khemia is pretty much the best game of the last 20 years. Love it so much.
Never played it. What does it play like? Is it an SRPG?
Never played it. What does it play like? Is it an SRPG?
Turn-based standard JRPG. Battle pace is quick for a GUST game and isn't half bad. The rest is up for debate though. Tons of youtube trailers, but based on your tastes in the PSP section you'd probably like it.

don't bother, whoever asked about Mana Khemia. It's fucking awful. I had to play that garbage for a preview and a review, and lemme tell ya -- it is the ONLY game I have ever played where I actually fell asleep. It is in every way an invention of the Devil, and you shouldn't play it.

Just finished FF13 last night and have been working on the Titan Challenges. I have mixed feelings about the game.

I like that the battle system has a lot of layers and depth that don't seem obvious right away, and even though characters can use the same role/job, they still have different abilities within it. It's a shame you don't get to fully appreciate that depth til the game is almost over.

I really dislike how simplified the equip and stat system is, though. Only 2 stats, Strength and Magic, are ever visible, and there's no armor to speak of. Yes, that's been a consistent thing in the series for awhile now, but it still annoys me. Other than increasing stats and abilities in general, I have no real way to measure what kind of defense characters have (paradigms aside).

I thought all of their base stats are under their profiles...

FF13 is weird. I don't like it that much, but I might actually replay it on the PS3 just to get to ch.11 and have a save file I can return to when I wanna play around with the battle system. and I won't upgrade anything until I get there next time.
I'll pick up FF13 in a year or so when its less then $30.
I got lucky and found it on Craigslist for $30 maybe 3 weeks after it had come out, dude was having a yard sale and needed money quick. You should always check it, people sell things for way less then their usually going for.
