RPG Thread V is really...grindy

Just got an e-mail about it too. Are there any Ys games on the virtual console or anything? I played one a long time ago on the genesis (sega channel actually, good times). I wouldn't mind checking one out now.

I just started Resonance of Fate last night, and I have to say I'm really loving that game so far. I was really scared of it because everyone said combat was super confusing, but after going through the tutorial at the Arena I feel like I have a fairly good grasp on how to play the game. I only finished the Prologue so far, so I don't think I've done any difficult battles yet; but I have a feeling I'm going to enjoy it enough to beat it.

The reason I decided to get it was I kept reading all these write ups of the game where people talked about the game and mentioned how it had a plot that was focused on the day to day lives of the characters, which I thought sounded like a really cool change of pace from many other RPGs. But, I didn't expect to get into and enjoy the combat system so quickly, since most reviews and write-ups said it felt a little too complex.

Yeah, RoF has a great battle system, if a little repetitive. It's actually not very complex, just different. I actually wished it was more complex, or maybe that they just made better use of the existing complexities. For most battles you use the exact same strategy.

Finished DDS1 last night; that game was way easier and shorter than I expected, since my only other experience with SMT was Persona 3.

RoF's battle system goes from super confusing to just really long and drawn out even when the enemy is easy
Ys I & II for TurboGraphx-16's on VC. Well worth it. Hoping Ys III will show up sometime.
whaaaaat didnt u see the memo?!?!

Xseed... Oath in Felghana... hopefully out this year.

Ys III is definitely showing up in full force!!
*googles*

Somehow I missed the bit about Oath in Felghana being a remake of Wanderers from Ys. Maybe it's time to get a PSP...
PSP has alot of good RPG ports.
Lunar, Star ocean 1 & 2, Legend of Heroes...

How is Magna Carta 2? I bought it for $28 from someone on another forum and haven't played it yet.
Yeah, Ys Book 1 & 2 is the shit. Probably one of the best VC games out there.
I agree completely. It is a great game to play during those 20 minute hockey game intermissions because you can save anywhere.

I started phantom brave on Wii, but I just can't get into it. I have such a hard time getting into SRPGs like Disgaea and such.

Playing through Dragon Age, 8 or so hours in. I have a feeling my dual wielding Dwarf rogue is pretty underpowered =/

Pretty cool game though.

Finally beat the 5th Kalpa Amala dungeon in Nocturne. Now I'm ready for the final dungeon. Should be a piece of cake, right? ;)

*phew* Finally beat the Snow Queen Quest in Persona. Boss really wasn't all that difficult, she just had a ton of HP. Kind of unusual the way it ends. At first it seems like the game will continue with the rest of the story. You finally leave the school in search of Maki & Masao, but then the game abruptly ends. It really feels like this was meant to be a side quest. But since it takes a good 70 - 80 hours I guess they decided to roll the credits.

I would've liked the option to be able to finish the rest of the game since by the end of the quest you're strong enough to breeze through anything. It would've been a nice perk for taking the time to do it. A new game plus would've been nice also.

So today I got bored at work and bought Final Fantasy 1 for my phone. My first ever RPG, and I know I've played it more than a dozen times. I know the game backwards and forwards, and have played it on NES, PS1, GBA, PC (Rom), and now playing thru on mobile phone. If I ever get a PSP, one of the first games I'll probably buy is FF1.

A distant second would be FF IV, which I've probably played thru half a dozen times or more. A close third would be FF VI, which I'm sure I've only played a couple times less than IV.

So the question to the RPG Thread is: What RPG have you replayed the most?

I hate how some people know FF1 so well. Like I'll be in a dungeon and my brother will say, "Hey, get the soft potion in that chest over there."

What?
Soft potion? I mean if it was a cool item like the Coral Sword, okay, yeah. But even an insignifcant item like a soft potion. Goddamn.

Mine is probably FF4, but I still don't know it that well.

ffvi (ffiii)

Chrono Trigger hands down, I used to beat that game using +Game 1-2 times a year back in the day. Then I slowed down but I beat it start to finish 2 times for the DS and then I had another play through trying to get the remaining endings (I got the standard ending the first time and then the new DS ending the second, then worked on all the other endings).

It helps that that game is short, like 15 hours on a non + playthrough (assuming you know what your doing and that you don't do the awful Lost Sanctum bonus dungeon in the DS version... took me about another 5 hours just to do that damn thing). Then each +Game only takes maybe 5-6 hours if you do everything.

Not really sure what my second would be, I have replayed FFVI a ton of times but I don't actually beat the game when I replay it (I think I've only actually finished it twice, I kind of get burned out in the World of Ruin because the plot basically just ends; and the plot is what makes that game my favorite of all time). I guess I beat Super Mario RPG a bunch of times as a kid, so that might be second.

Zelda OOT if we can count that as an RPG. Used to do a runthrough every year, but missed last year. Gearing up for this year's soon though :D Chrono Trigger's a second place, but I've only beat it 3 times (SNES, PSX, DS).... yet have never once bothered with a NG+ or going for different endings...

Final Fantasy VII. I don't know how many times I've played it, though I'm fairly sure I've done at least four complete playthroughs (at least two on PC, and I know for a fact I've played it exactly twice on PS1), and at least two incomplete ones, including one where I stopped right around the end of Disk 2.
Damn..the Deep Roads in Dragon Age are an absolute chore. I'm taking a break.
That reminds me, still gotta finish that...

Finally got unstuck in Hexyz Force. I might play through Levant's scenario, I don't know yet. I need something to do until DQIX comes out.

Im at home playing Persona!!

freakin finally too!! I havent made time for this game in weeks!!

5 hours in and Im like got damn this Sebec dungeon is taking FOREVER!!

altho I visited every floor instead of going straight to 5 :p

I'm kindof curious what you did to accomplish that seeing as how I was unable to help you figure it out.

Rodmus>> I didn't decide anyone!! I wanted Elena or whoever the girls name is that was also in P2, but somehow I ended up with i think Ayase??

The girl who goes "here personie!?"

I wish this game had a guide book >_

Beat Dragon Quest V, and did so without finding the
Zenithian Armour
. When I looked up its location on GameFAQs, I felt like beating my head against the table. Feel really dumb for overlooking that place; I'm usually a lot better about that kind of thing >_

Playing Etrian Odyssey again, mainly so that I have a "complete" game to load into EOII. Anyone know if I need to do all of the quests for that, or do I just need to finish mapping the postgame stratum?
I'm kindof curious what you did to accomplish that seeing as how I was unable to help you figure it out.
In case you don't see the Hexyz thread, I had to go down to B2 of the Temple where you start, and it progressed from there.

What should I play next ... What takes less time to beat - Sakura Wars or Magna Carta 2?

Thinking I might start replaying Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion after I finish up my billionth playthrough of Marvel Ultimate Alliance.

I just had a sudden craving to play Oblivion. I miss the game even though it all looks the same. :S

These Dragon Age dungeons are really starting to rub me the wrong way. I finally finished the 4 subquests, and now that I want to progress the main story it's back to, "oh you're looking for this guy? he's down in that labyrinth of rooms and hallways filled with enemies that drop nothing but trash and experience points that you technically don't need."

raawwrrrgsdfgsdsdf

Beat Hexyz Force at like lvl 46 in Cecilia's scenario. Took about 20 hours. It gives you new game+ and some artwork and BGMs pretty cool.

I wasn't going to, but I think I'll play Levant's scenario next.

Dragon Warrior for the NES was the only RPG I've ever replayed only because I didn't have any money back in the day. My backlog ensures I'll never replay a RPG again.
Looks like a huge let down for RPG at E3. No Tales of Vesperia/Graces, Last Story, or Xenoblade
Dragon Quest IX is all you need.

There's a square ton of RPGs I haven't played, especially on the PSP so I'll be set for awhile.

Are NIS, Xseed, Atlus, Aksys gonna be at E3? Hopefully they'll announce something.

JRPGs are going the way of the beat em up. You rarely ever see one anymore but when you do you'll think it's a masterpiece.

I know that Atlus is definitely there. Their latest newsletter even had E3 2010 in the headline, so I'm hoping they're doing something there.

I also expected about 0-2 RPGs to be shown at E3. Only the huge name ones (DQ/FF mainly) seem to be shown there, while I usually see the lower key (lower in the US that is) ones shown off at TGS.

I will be starting my first RPG in a longtime and need advice. Figure I'll stick to 360/PS3, but I could go PSP or hooking up the PS2. I burnt out on RPGs several years ago, but kept buying them impulsively. My choices are as follows:

FFXIII
Tales of Vesperia
Valkyria Chronicles
Blue Dragon
Disgaea III
Dragon Age Origins
Oblivion
Sacred 2
Divinity II
Fable II

PS2/PSP
Persona PSP
Persona 3 FES
Persona 4
SMT Digital Devil Saga 1&2
SMT Nocturne
SMT Devil Summoner
SMT Devil Summoner 2
FFXII
Aterlier Iris Eternal Mana (halfway through)
Tales of the Abyss

Only thing to add is that I like getting achievements for games on the 360 :bomb:. Probably a trait that drew me into the collect everything do everything part of RPGs in the first place.

I think my top 3 choices (without hooking up the PS2 on my Plasma) are Tales of Vesperia, Valkyria Chronicles, and FFXIII

Not really. NIS, Atlus, XSeed are still cranking them out.

Shame on you, Atlus. Remaking and porting games that are barely 2 years old? Knights in the Nightmare, Yggida Union, P3 Portable, Riveria... I know the economy's tough, but at least give us some new games..
