Done with my post-Dark Cloud no-RPGs break, and have little idea of what to play next :whee: All I'm sure of is that I'd prefer something turn-based or semi-turn-based that's not MegaTen.

What I have in my backlog that fits:
- Dungeons of Dredmor
- Opoona
- Sakura Wars: So Long My Love
- Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood
- Suikoden V

...and I think that's it. Right now I'm leaning toward either Sakura Wars or Suikoden. Also strongly considering Sonic; just beat Generations, though. Any suggestions for what I should play next?
I have only played the middle three so out of those I would say Sakura Wars. Maybe I will dust off Suikoden 5 and play it as well, either that or finally play Lost Odyssey, or replay Final Fantasy 9.

I played Suikoden I, II, and V. All my friends have said that it was okay to skip III and IV. And V was pretty nifty.

I thought IV was ok. Most of the flack it seemed to get was related to sailing a fair amount and people not realizing you could hold down a button to fast sail. I disliked III the most simply because of the whole switching main characters thing. The same reason I dislike Wild Arms 3. Sure they're all in your party eventually, but it just makes me uninterested when you're flipping around all the time. Makes me feel like I'm playing different games at the same time, not able to focus on a single one so I lose the grab from the game.

Suikoden IV was a poor entry for a lot of reasons. The mundane sailing is a gimme but mostly for it's boring story and poor character development. Suikoden gives you 108 characters to recruit and usually the series does a great job giving them all a purpose. SIV fails at that. Only a handful are interesting. Combat even drops the 6 person standard for only 4. That shouldn't matter in any other game but Suikoden has so many recruitable characters you want to use as many as possible. Lastly since it's a prequel that takes place more than 100 years of the first game, the story bears little significance on the series.

The only intresting thing was Ted's side story.

Thanks guys; I'll go with Suikoden V (and to those who said II, I don't have that one, so I can't :p). Side note: I had originally picked up V because I'd heard/read that it was the best of the PS2 entries, and the PS1 Suikodens, especially II, were/are way out of my price range.

Just be ready, Suikoden V starts off kind of slow, there is hardly any combat for the first couple hours while it sets up the story (also be prepared for some slightly confusing, give yourself a self guided tour of a location and story doesn't progress until you've actually visited all the screens in that area, that was confusing), once the game gets going it's really fun though.

Obsidian seems a little confused about their concept art...

yes they really

To clarify, the big-ass-titties version came from an interview with one of the designers of PE and the Penny Arcade Report. The normal version is the one you can see on their kickstarter page.

that's so strange to me, doesn't having a kickstarter mean that you don't have to give in to silly marketing demands like this from a publisher?

and the gaming industry still has such prude taste when it comes to sex appeal, it's so tiring. i meant wut:
tifa2.png

The big-tit version was the first one shown. The Audience was pretty vocal in how they thought it was stupid. Given that the normal version was put on the Kickstarter page, everyone's assuming that's the official one from now on.

But it's an isometric game so we're probably not going to be able to tell the difference anyway.

it's just weird that they'd even consider that enough to try and change it in the first place.

maybe i just have a glorified view of the team behind this project, considering the material they're working with.

I'll confess to total ignorance on how this whole concept art thang is done.

For what it's worth, this is the artist. And doubly for what it's worth, Josh Sawyer seemed to realize that the first one was pretty stupid, which... really, how did that get in to the interview, then?

well i imagine their audience is well beyond puberty, ya? these are very old games.

Well if he wanted more tits this time around, I guess he has that freedom and I'd respect it if it was just his decision. But it just seemed like an odd move that people could easily read into negatively.

Yeah, which is why they complained about this character design having abnormally sized tits or emphasis on said tits or whatever. I don't really know what the problem is besides the fact that females have breast.

I think at the concept art stage there are lots of variations of each character prepared. There's probably versions of that image with short hair, long hair, dark hair, light hair, different skin colors, hat/no hat, whatever. In the Mass Effect 2 art book there are like a dozen different preliminary designs for Jack with completely different hairstyles, clothing, etc. I think they probably just accidentally released two different versions of this image, and while it's kind of funny that the difference in this case is breast size, I wouldn't necessarily read more into it than that.
Awesome, glad you're enjoying it. Are you tackling all the sidequests?
no, I heard doing that turns it into a 150 hour game o_O

when I fight monsters and I get a quest progress notification I look for more monsters to fight, but other than that I never pursue other side stuff.

are there any quests that are truly worth doing?!?!

btw my inventory is maxed out on stones already... do I seriously needa warp all the way back to the first town to use them??

I read an article one time on the subject of female armor. It made the point that there is so much padding in real armor that emulating any body shape is kinda pointless in reality. Any such display would only be for vanity's sake. (Or some idiot artist who didn't understand how armor works.)
Thank you. Does the quick save quit the game like some quick saves do?
It returns you to the title screen, yes.
Was the design revised because of the fan backslash or did you have the other version ready before? Also, did you want to *test the waters* with the boob plate design?

We had discussed various versions of the breastplate before the PA article went up. Reactions to the one on the PA site caused us to go with a more traditional breastplate for the final design.
Side quests are the best way to get EXP. If you're feeling under leveled just knock off a few of them. But it shouldn't be too much of a problem. The game is fairly easy until the last couple bosses.

As for stones you should get some portable crafting device soon. Not sure when exactly you get it. To be honest this was the most annoying thing about the game. I hate micromanagement.
Thief 2 and System Shock 2 just got patched out of left field and is seemingly legit:

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140085
Thank you for posting this, I went and grabbed the patches and the demos and fired up SS2 demo just to see some of the changes that they did.

Just serves as a reminder to me how awesome this game is and why it still sits in my top 10 of all time. Even with knowing where everything is and the story being spoiled, I can go back into it and enjoy it since its so awesome and can appreciate everything I do know about it now. And even for being over a decade old, it still looks really freakin' great. I was just sad that the demo ended. (I know I can pull my disc out, install it and this patch and the high res pack and go at it, just wished I had time to do so)

One of my biggest wishes, is that the dark engine was better able to be modded (this patch seems like it made it easier) and someone did a total conversion of System Shock, I've played through that one too (cd version), but man that game has not aged well, and not even as good as the sequel.

So cheers for that post and the news of the new patch. ;)

Over 50,000 backers for PE. $11,000 shy of doubling their initial goal.

New update: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/obsidian/project-eternity/posts/319868

Happy Monday! We've reached 50,000 backers, and have a special reward for everyone. Details below. Also coming this week, we have more updates about the development and creation of the game. Tomorrow, Justin Bell will discuss the process for composing the music for our trailer video. On Wednesday, Josh will update with more details about the game's design, and we are going to unveil a awesome art piece that we’ve been working on.
Oh, PayPal is also coming on Wednesday!
The 50,000 Backer Reward
We are very excited to announce a reward to all backers that have helped us come this far. Today we are introducing The Endless Paths of Od Nua - a new dungeon experience for Project Eternity:
In the western reaches of the Dyrwood lies the Endless Paths, an ancient network of cobbled trails that wind through arches of dense overgrowth, twisting within the confines of a high castle wall as they make their way to the gates of iron-shuttered towers that jut forth from the interior. In ages past, the towers rising from the gardens to pierce the canopy of the forest once marked the dominion of the castle's relentless, crazed builder: Od Nua. But the courses of Od Nua's madness run far below the surface, stretching forever deeper into wandering catacombs and bone-cramped oubliettes unseen by living eyes for centuries. The Endless Paths, as the old Glanfathans call them, cannot be walked by the living, but the storytellers say with certainty that many strong souls have found a permanent home beneath the grieving creator's estate.
Most else that is said and written of the place is fiction or conjecture, more likely to have sprouted from the svef-enhanced imaginations of bored and boasting mercenaries than from any seed of truth. Hosts of lost souls that relentlessly stalk the living, cathedral-sized tombs overflowing with the restless victims of a horrific plague, lightless chambers sealing in the remnants of Od Nua's failed experiments. Most legends converge on a common theme: that under the castle rest myriad forgotten vaults of death and darkness glittering with Od Nua's enchanted creations and the abandoned treasure of ill-fated interlopers. So great is the fear of the castle's denizens that even drunken and drug-cheered adventurers do not joke of setting foot on the paths, lest their souls join the eternal ranks of those that have gone before them.
The current plan is to make The Endless Paths with three subterranean levels, but it can grow larger with your help. For every 2,500 additional backers, the depths of Od Nua’s castle become deeper, which means one additional level will be added to the vaults. Continue to spread the word about Project Eternity, and let's see how big we can make The Endless Paths!
Crafting and Enchanting at $2.4 Million
We also have a new stretch goal at $2.4 million dollars to announce: Crafting and Enchanting!

Crafting and enchanting in Project Eternity will allow players to use objects and materials they find during exploration to both create consumable items like potions and scrolls as well as give their gear custom upgrades that can't be accomplished by other means. This system is intended to be easy to use and very flexible, allowing players to customize many aspects of what they can create or alter. Whether it's brewing basic potions from herbs and minerals commonly found throughout the world or upgrading a humble broadsword into a custom-named, magically-imbued weapon of distinctive and legendary power, we want to give players the ability to make it. On the development side of things, we also want to make the system as data-driven as possible, allowing us to easily extend our list of recipes in the future.
Each stretch goal we hit not only adds new features to the game like crafting, but also makes the game larger by adding more content, quests, dialogue, and characters. Together, we've already added two new races, companions and classes, along with a player house. $2.2 million is very close which adds a new faction and region, and there are more exciting stretch goals planned if we make it past $2.4 million and beyond.
New Add-Ons
Additionally, we have two new add-ons for you:

 • Add an Early Access Beta Key for $25. The beta key is the same reward at the $110 and up levels, but now you can add it as an extra at the lower tiers.
 • Add a Digital Strategy Guide for $7. The digital strategy guide is also included in the $80 and up levels, but now you can add it as an extra at the lower tiers. This will cost more when we ship the game, so get in on the opportunity to save!
As a quick tutorial on how to add add-ons, go to the Project Eternity Kickstarter site and hit the Manage Your Pledge button. The reward tier you had already picked will still be selected and the amount will be in the big box at the top. All you need to do is add the dollar amount that covers the add-ons you would like to your pledge and enter the new total number. For instance, if you are at the $35 Pledge level and want to add the Beta Key, you would enter $60 as your total pledge. We’ll send you a fulfillment survey after the Kickstarter period is over and you can specify what you wanted to do with any excess monies added.

They should hit it, especially with the push that always comes at the end of the KS. I'm looking forward to crafting and enchanting much more than the house.

I've nothing against the idea of crafting systems, but I rarely like how they're actually set up. KotOR 2's was alright, albeit clumsy.

I'm more interested in the dungeon whose size is determined by the final number of backers.

One thing Feargus just mentioned was that they will have quest-based crafting in addition to the more regular item-build crafting system. Like in BG2 where you had to quest to get several pieces of a legendary weapon and then have them re-forged to make said weapon whole again.

Ah, good. I thought that was one of the better parts of BG2.

Compare that the the clusterfuck of Neverwinter Nights 2's crafting. Manuals! Manuals fucking everywhere!

Minsc with his Flail of Ages says hi :D (I'd have used it, but I was too busy wrecking shit with my Holy Avenger!)

Seriously, the more I hear, the tighter my pants get...

Done the first half of loyality missions on ME 2. Moved the game up from Normal to Easy for more challenge. Easy was -too- easy.

We are all heroes; you and Boo and I--hamsters and rangers everywhere, rejoice !!! :D

I always felt weird giving Minsc the flail because half of his lines are about swords. "Swords, not words!" and "Jump on my sword while you can, evil!" and all that.

But then, Imoen was always "My blade will cut you down to size!" even though the only time she ever went without a bow was, like... the first five minutes of Irenicus' dungeon.

EDIT: A bit more PE related...
HAHAHA fuck trees. This thread is now about Obsidian's next RPG.

"It’s not as if people stopped wanting games like Icewind Dale or Baldur’s Gate, it was more that BioWare moved on as a studio and Black Isle went away. I hear from people all the time that they run out of the newer games to play and go back and play Baldur’s Gate 2 or Torment for the fifth or sixth time."

I hate how it's for PC only.

PC - yuck.

So much hate in this post. Learn to love the master race and join us :D

Speaking of PC, I'm thinking of playing Torchlight again.

As for Suikoden V, it's good so far, but the beginning section is slow, like a couple of you said (I'm currently visiting Stormwind for the first time). The writing's good, though, so at least it's not boring :p

It's not everday you see the Alliance capital show up in a JRPG. :p
