RPG Thread XVII - Talk of RPGs past.
Story is generic as can be, and BG2 is better than it in pretty much every way. I would recommend skipping it and just playing the sequel. If you do want to play the original though (maybe you just prefer low-level campaigns; I ain't judging), you should install BG2 anyway so that you can use the Tutu or BGTrilogy mod to upgrade the UI and rules of the original so that they match the sequel. It's the first of the IE games, and Bioware's first RPG, but it's really quite weak in comparison to the games that built upon it.
I agree, I would go the BGII route at this point. Planescape: Torment is still a worthy adventure as well. There is a reason it has been long regarded by some as the best CRPG ever created, even today.

i think that asking how many characters you like to have in your party is kind of a weird question because of how varied games are, as well as their battle systems, as well as their relation to the story.

$2.5 million for Torment.

He looks way too much like a skinny, poorly lit version of SC2's lead designer.
So it looks like Drakengard 3 is happening.
Wait, what? But Cavia doesn't exist anymore, right? Who's making it?

Decided to take the plunge on Torment. I wasn't going to but that $45 preorder with Wasteland 2 included was too good to pass up.

Also I think I am gonna start Fire Emblem tonight.

Good man.

Also, Drakengard rumours everywhere tonight.
• Creative Director & Scenario: Yoko Taro (Drakengard, Nier)
 • Character Design: Kimihiko Fujisaka (Drakengard, Nier)
 • Music Director: Keiichi Okabe (Nier)
 • Producer: Takamasa Shiba (Drakengard)
Another rumour says that it will be developed by Access, the studio that did Deadly Premonition.

So what you're telling me is they're not making a Nier sequel? That universe is way better.

What other endings were there to Drakengard 2 that isn't the one that led to Nier?

I dig shared EXP. If you have, say, 6-8 characters in the game, and you're consistently using half of them, the other half will still be near the party witnessing the fights and stuff. Plus you'd imagine they'd be working out or training on their own. So it makes sense those non-used characters would receive at least some level of experience.

lololol quoting my own post

To expand on what I'd want to see in a leveling system, is no leveling at all. You start off with skills and attributes at a certain numerical value based on the class or whatever you choose to start the game, and your skills and attributes rise as you use them. Skills would also decay if you never used them; if you never use a spell related to healing/defense, why should your ability to cast defensive magic increase (as an example)?

If it were a party based game, you could set a few skills and attributes for non-used characters to focus on while training/whatever they do when they aren't actively fighting with you, so you'd have control over their character paths too. Active characters would receive a small boost in skills if another active team member used said skill.

Along with ditching leveling would be the elimination of enemy scaling, so you wouldn't have random enemies in the forest that manage to be stronger than the main quest super demon master of the universe baddies.
I always imagined they were just fighting another battle.

Not...watching me. That's...weird...yet hawt?
What can I say, I'm an exhibitionist.
The prospect of Drakengard 3 is upsetting to some:
Hehehehehe

Of course, I would be very disappointed if he doesn't LP it.

all the talk about ultima made me want to play ultima 7

and strangely that led to me playing skyrim and getting the dlc.

i should probably beat skyrim one of these days. i had to start over because i had no idea what was going on in my current game.

Joke's on you. Nothing is ever going on in Skyrim.
Hehehehehe

He actually refused to ever LP the game that Cavia made before Nier, Bullet Witch. He has some limits.

You know what really pisses me off about FF13-2? The fact that enemies spawn in your face every 10 seconds. Shit...sometimes I just want to explore without needing to ride a chocobo and sometimes, there isn't even one around! I'm looking at YOU AI tower! fuck you thrice!
A day later and I'm still flabbergasted that this is a thing... Also people can stop messaging me about it. I KNOW!

And yes I will LP Drakengard 3. Toxx me on that. Even if it is terrible, it's still not as terrible as Drakengard 2. I have faith in Taro Yoko's misanthropic insanity.

Hey just because I'm primarily the reason anyone in the west knows about Drakengard and did more of a marketing push for NIER than Square-Enix did doesn't me--OHGODI'MAMONSTER!!!!
"Toxx" basically means "ban me if"; in this case, "ban me if I don't LP it" (in which case reregistering is $10).

:10bux: for an account, another ten to read any thread that hasn't been posted in for a certain period of time, another ten to be able to PM, and 5 for an avatar/user title. Or 10 to get an avatar/title for someone else (they have no say in the matter).

Nerds are really bad with money.

EDIT: Except for the nerds that are really good at getting other nerds to give them money, of course.

EDIT2:
You have to pay to register with the Something Awful forums (and I only know this because I'm married to a Goon).
My condolences.
You level up and apply skill points in Sleeping Dogs.

RPG.
Not to mention you are Role Playing my life story. I grew up in a bad town but I earned the respect and was dubbed "White Dragon".
Not really.

So, RPGs.
Can't. Installing HotS today, bbl.

Seriously though, besides that, I do have to get back into Abyss (I think I'm now at least about 3/4 of the way through). Pokemon White has been my main gaming focus this week.

i remember back in the days when it was rare to have RPG-stats in regular games so it was really cool.

like river city ransom.

now almost every game does it and i hate it. it's the main reason why GTA:SA turned me off so much.
KoA is fun for a few hours, and then isn't.
Yeah, I totally agree, the main issue for me was when I started to realize that the game feels like a single player version of a classic MMORPG with the number of silly and pointless quests that everyone has for you to do, there are literally TONS of those types of quests.

--

I've been playing Fire Emblem Awakening on my commute, I'm really liking it a lot so far, and it makes the hour long BART ride feel a lot shorter. Also, I've gotten a ton of street passes with people from my BART ride, but it's kind of silly because most of them are much more powerful then me so unless they have something within my price range to buy I can't get anything from them.

well i bought koa because it was $6.

for some reason i'm feeling like a harvest moon game, was the 3ds one any good?

i feel like the series peaked with hm64/bts, and the only one i felt was comparable was fotm. every time i try the newer ones there's always something that annoys me, whether it's the way crops grow, or how they're not worth a lot, or how you always have to cook and eat food.

Same. Really really liked it at first, then all of a sudden a "wtf am I doing" hit and I put it down.

Started playing Tales of Symphonia Dawn of the New World this week to pass time until Monster Hunter comes out... and I like it. I really do. I'd prefer a full on cast instead of the monster collecting, but call me blasphemous I'm enjoying it more than Vesperia... There, I said it. :whistle2:#

Also don't get all the hate. FFXIII-2 did almost the exact same thing: Monster collecting, cameos from previous game's characters but otherwise new cast, recycled assets (though not to the degree ToS2 is doing it seems). Also love that the skits are fully voiced. Day and night difference from all the silent skits I'm used to.

Fully voiced skits?! Awesome.

Dawn of the New World's in my backlog, but unless it's as short as main-game Legendia, I don't see myself playing another Tales game for awhile once I'm done with Abyss.
one game at a time, man. go play KoA.
YOU CAN'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO

although i did play koa a lot this weekend. fun little game. i just hope i can finish it.

smoke bomb is so broken, lol
dustin reminds me of the owner of every card shop i've ever gone to for MTG draft nights.
That dude wrote the Complete Book of Elves? Always preferred Dwarves myself but I loved those 2nd edition brown books. So many new kits/races.
Infinite Undiscovery was alright.
Yeah, I kinda liked it. I think most people's impression was formed by the first few hours of the game, which are terrible (that stealth mission, Jesus :cold:), only it really does improve dramatically after that.
