RPG Thread XVII - Talk of RPGs past.
when valkyria chronicles started i thought the story was cool, i really liked the pseudo-ww2 setting.

then tits mcgee showed up firing lasers from her lance and then the story turned into anime.

man.
But she's their super weapon.

Or something. Nazi's always looked for super weapons in WWII according to Indiana Jones.
But if it were that simple then I'd assume most guys would do it, you know? I also roll female in MMOs but I get why most other men don't, it's very emasculating. My buddies would always gave me shit in WoW for playing female, and I'd give the typical, "because blood elves are hot" excuse, but I always said it as a half joke to shed off any scrutiny. Because truthfully I don't know why I do it, and I'd like to figure that out.
People always gave me shit for it, but I didn't care.

In MMO and third person games, I just don't care for staring at male butts. In other games, I just like female avatars. I rarely have a sole male featured in wallpapers I use, other than Spike Spiegel. I might have used a Mordecai or Zero wallpaper.

For the most part, I also only buy female anime figures.
Gee, who would have thunk that a Japanese game would have Japanese conventions for the plot?

Personally, I like it because it plays like a WWII feel-good Hollywood film, where the good guys are in the right and the bad guys are bad.
I guess I should have assumed that Japanese art style/direction + European setting = Japanese storytelling.

I think I would have liked the game better if it had been a little more gritty. Less silly.
how do ya'll feel about gender crossplay in RPGs? i'm trying to lay the groundwork for an upcoming article addressing the reasons why some men play as women, and as i'm not freud, i'm sort of stumped.
For me, it depends on the game. I think the overall look of Males in Dragon Age is lackluster, so I played a female. And it's the opposite for Mass Effect and Skyrim.

For something like World of Warcraft, I alternate between the two because it doesn't really matter there, since over half the people that play female characters are dudes. I remember that I knew a chick who played a male character in WOW and people thought her crazy. I found that pretty odd.

VC1 is the most serious thing ever compared to VC2 which is disappointing.

Daisy all the way in any Mario game. And if not her, then Yoshi, and we all know Yoshi is female cuz she lays eggs and that's how that works.

I used to get shit for it too, but then the people who gave me shit started slowly hopping the fence. Maybe it's an immaturity thing? Hell, I used to get shit for listening to female fronted bands.
The fact that I couldn't run over people with my tank stopped me from playing Valkyria Chronicles. That and the goofy story.

I might pick up the :psp: version if it drops to $10 or less.
While the psp introduces more classes and 'defending battles,' it gets pretty repetitive after a while. I'm about 30 hours into it and, while it was a blast at first, its starting to feel like I'm slowly grinding through the stroy. The characters are pretty good, most of the game you are finding out about them as you are becoming their unlikely leader. But I think the first one is better and a great game. If you don't like the 'can't kill people with a tank' and the ' cliche anime' don't kid yourself because this one suffers from the same if not more ;) and the requirements to raise your class are almost randomly acquired.

I dig that you can unlock a bunch a characters from the first one though, had to get my Marina. If you're looking to play VC2 maybe we can trade I'm looking for FF4 or Tactics Ogre next
I remember that I knew a chick who played a male character in WOW and people thought her crazy. I found that pretty odd.
I do too, lol. I knew one that always played male characters.

I also think it's hilarious and awesome to create a tiny, super-thin little female character and then have her wreck shop with gigantic weapons. I have a real Joss Whedon complex.
I guess I should have assumed that Japanese art style/direction + European setting = Japanese storytelling.

Personally, I think there are enough gritty WWII-styled games. BTW, running people over with a tank isn't really compatible with turn-based games. Maybe you can give someone a chance to evade...

As for female characters, I tend to like to play female characters in fighters. Back in the day, I played a lot of Chung-Li in Street Fighter II.

I did roll up a FemShep in Mass Effect, but I haven't played much with her.

Like others said, I usually play male because I'm male, and in WRPGs like to feel more like it's "me". I generally attempt a female alt play just to see what's changed, but usually never finish because it's usually the exact same dialogue and choices etc just spoken from a female voice.

I understand that it would be an unrealistic amount of work to change up the dialogue on a character by character basis (hell, I'm impressed when there's even racial recognition in most games) though.

I do plan on doing a full fem-shep replay of the series though, mainly cuz It'll also be a first time renegade playthrough, and Jennifer Hale is an awesome voice actress.

For what it's worth, regardless of what gender I'm playing, I never really try to play the character "like me", in either appearance or personality.
But are they like super sexualized/feminine male elfs?

Cuz I know someone that does that.
If I remember correctly, she played a male dwarf rogue and a male human paladin.
It was quaint middle ages-ish WW 2, but then instead of tossing in "human" characters, they made them all anime-ish. Hell, in the first 10 minutes she arrests the main character because he's drawing pictures in a book, cue the little surprised mark above his head.
Then someone gives birth in a tank? And the plucky young heroine who learns to overcome her fear, and wish everyone would stop fighting!
And someone tragically dies but it's okay because the girl who was dreaming of being a singer will sing at her grave!
And the heroine who kills lots of people, then goes back home to bake bread. Ice cold veins.
Gee, who would have thunk that a Japanese game would have Japanese conventions for the plot?

I thought it would be more nitty-gritty and less... kawaii, for lack of a better word. (Maybe cutesy? Whimsical?) Especially because I thought the game set itself up like that.
Granted, it was still a fun and intriguing game. I also like Welkin's character.

VC2 was kind of silly though. Gameplay was good but not so sure about the story. I think I got to the final month and stopped playing. I spent way too much time with optional missions.

I should probably play VC3 again... maybe, maybe my Japanese is good enough to play it now. It definitely evokes a more VC1 flavor though.

As for avatars, I tend to choose ultra-sexed out female characters unless I want to "be myself" in which I try to make myself. The only other character I would choose are the super huge larger-than-life guys, like say... ZANGIEF.

Oh, I like to think they are me, not that I'm playing "me". Reaper invasion? I don't think running away in abject terror makes a good hero :p

Meets kainzero in real life... actually looks like Zangief...

That took a lot of readings for me to understand. I guess it'd be more accurate to say that you like to think that you are them?

Also, I think I've finally reached the point in Xenoblade where crafting gems isn't a waste of my god damn time.

Me too. I read it four times before I realized that I really didn't care in the first place.

And gems are always not a waste. You were doing it wrong.

I usually play a male (when there's a choice). I try and make him a more idealized version of myself. Better in shape, always making the "right" decisions.

lol I really gotta work on this whole "coherent" thing I keep hearing about...

Also I was constantly crafting gems in Xenoblade... and was rarely well rewarded for my time...

What?

Get that big backstab bonus on Shulk and he'll wreak fools.

Then throw a bunch of whatever increases avoidance rate on Dunban and he'll ninja everything.

I didn't say that gem crafting was pointless, just that it was pointless before a certain point. For a significant stretch of the game, 95% of the gems you craft will be at best equal to and usually worse than gems you find.

Decided to buy Xenoblade Chronicles after watching gameplay videos earlier. Don't have a Wii so I ended up downloading the game for my PC. Figured I might as well support the company by buying the game. Totally excited.

Been playing some Legend of Dragoon. Diggin' the soundtrack. Combat is... fun I guess?
Been playing some Legend of Dragoon. Diggin' the soundtrack. Combat is... fun I guess?
I don't remember anything from the soundtrack. Combat is legit though.

Gust of Wind Dance.

Speaking of RPGs that nobody played.

Dragon's Dogma is still amazingly great. There's a part where you can just fall forever past different floors cuz you teleport to the top when you hit the bottom. Now, you "can" grab onto the ledges to pull yourself up onto any of the floors, but you're better off just straight faceplanting onto one of them which only takes an insignificant amount of health loss.

Again, it's amazing.

I dunno, I got pumped when I first heard this, though it is a bit repetitive.
I totally remember this beat. You've done proved me wrong.
I'm about five hours into Xenoblade Chronicles.
Just left the area after the Mechon invasion. WTF for killing Fiora.
Don't be so naive. I mean, I haven't gotten to a part that confirms or denies this, but please.

I like songs that make me want to kick some ass. You're right though, it is a bit too early to tell just how good (or bad) the soundtrack is as a whole. Still, from what I've heard so far, it's pretty nice.

I'm surprised I made it to the five hour mark. I've been starting up games and quitting within the first hour quite a bit recently. :whistle2:#

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy is a pretty good traditional Final Fantasy game. I recommend it.

And yeah, I went there.

Xenoblade did indeed have a fantastic OST.

Also, Theatrhythm is an amazing game and I would totally kill for a ChronoTrigger or Nintendo branded "version" of the game.

Started Recettear yesterday. Decided to not give up on Dragon's Dogma but hold it till after I experience Ni No Kuni because Dragon's Dogma has been kicking my ass.

Recettear is really fun but then again I only finished my first week of the game.

And an end to Yggdra Union. One of the better SRPGs I've played in a while. I actually kept the voice acting on during the game too, which I rarely do.

It was diffuclt, but fun. And didn't require understanding and memorizing several complicated rule systems like NIS games. (Which you then ignore once you figure out a grinding cheat to over-level)
i finally beat the crap out of that wolf that kicked my ass in baldur's gate

NOW we on an adventure
What class are you?

i am sexy chaotic good elven thief with 5 hp

that one guy kicked my ass at the inn though
but it's okay because i reloaded and i showed him what's up. where's your quicksave son?! that's right!!!

yo wazzuuuuuuuuup happy monday yallz!! aka Garfield's most hated day.

I put in a bit of time this weekend playing Planescape Torment finally.

overall... not having much fun  which sux coz this is supposed to be everyone's favorite game.

When I started I had no idea what was happening or what to do and jus got real frustrated...

then I decided to use a walkthru, restarted the game, and have been kinda using a walkthru n map as a guide to get me between places.

I'm kinda used to it now so thus far the game is just okay I guess...

I'm gonna stick to it a bit more but I really hope I can reach a point where the game jus clicks and I learn to love it like everybody else does.
