RPG Thread XVII - Talk of RPGs past.

I started Ni No Kuni. I'm about an hour into it. Not sure if I'll continue playing it or go to Tales of Graces.

Did anyone pick up Atelier Ayesha by chance? I've been watching some footage and it looks nice, but I'm not entirely sure if I want it considering I haven't played through the other three.

Torment: Tides of Numenara is now on Kickstarter. I'm in for... shit, not quite sure. Less than PE, most likely. But I'm definitely in for something.

As of right now, they have approximately $700,000 of their minimum $900,000.
Nice, the odds for a game sucking from crowd funding has increased.

I want to see you cry Crotch, CRY!
I'm far more excited for PE than the new Torment. Also, the tier I just backed also gets me a copy of Wasteland 2, so the odds of me getting something decent out of all this also increased.
concept art is some shit, isn't it? like "hey, go draw us some masterpiece that we can loosely base this game off of."
I think some of it is also concept art for the Numenera setting in general, which had its own Kickstarter a while back.

EDIT: Also, they've gained $100,000 since I posted less than an hour ago that their Kickstarter had gone live.

:( I didn't want to pledge to another Kickstarter so soon. Why'd they have to do this? Oh, well. In for limited discount price.

Quite the commitment.
Speaking of Kickstarters... three more days to support Dreamfall Chapters. Just sayin'.
To be honest, I'm still debating keeping that one. I wasn't exactly impressed by the first two games.

Wife was cursing Ni No Kuni earlier today for having boss fights. She'd rather just fight and collect familiars and experience the story.
Lol a sequel to Planescape? Probably hit ~$10 million in a week
I figured that PE would probably cap out at about three million dollars, and they ended up with four. I figured the new Torment Kickstarter would have a slower start than PE, but it's substantially faster. Even with my history of underestimating these things, I kinda doubt that their end total will be substantially greater.

Luckily, Atelier Ayesha is part of a new saga and unrelated to the Arland Saga (Rorona, Totori, Meruru in that order.)

Ahaha. One of the Torment stretch goals involves bringing on this writer/designer:
Tony has been a game writer and designer since the late 1990s and has worked on more role-playing games than any sane designer should, with time served at both Obsidian and Bioware. Tony worked on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, Dragon Age 2...
Now this is the part where, if you're me, panic sets in.
... Neverwinter Nights 2, and Mask of the Betrayer (he designed the Skein and wrote One of Many, among other things). Tony was also the lead designer on Storm of Zehir.
But it's all cool in the end. One of Many was fucking sweet-ass.

Just need $500,000 more for the orchestra.

Deciding if I want to start Fire Emblem Awakening or Etrian Odyssey IV next. Decisions :whistle2:k

I am gonna hold off on these kickstarters. I mean I will buy the games, but with my backlog, it would make more sense to just Steam them on sale.

I bought Fire Emblem and my 3DSXL on the same night. Before I knew it, 30 hours were gone and I showed no signs of stopping. It's a fantastic game.

I don't think I've fully played a RPG to completion on the :ps3: at all. i've skipped a generation. (Wait, does Dragon Age count? )

For anything turn based or filled with menus and tiny text playing on a handheld device is a much better fit.

I only put money in to two games (though my reward tiers get me three games and an expansions). Honestly, I'm just happy to see a revival of the subgenre.
just embrace dragon age 2, crotch.
I embraced it by giving it to a person I hate.

They enjoyed it...

Really, I probably wouldn't have minded the game quite so much if PE and the new Torment and what-not had existed back then. But at the time? It was the death rattle of a genre, man.

EDIT: That is not to say that I view it as good now. It's still bad. I just have options now is all.
What do your reward tiers get me?
Torment has the best stretch goal ever:

Last, but most certainly not least: Upon reaching $2.5m, we will send out a special video from Colin. Those of you familiar with Colin’s very early work may recall that he wrote the Complete Book of Elves for 2nd Edition AD&D. You AD&D players may remember how dreadful this work was, making elves so incredibly powerful and unbalanced that all of our AD&D games were henceforth ruined until 3rd Edition D&D came to save us. (This is a slight overstatement. We could just pretend the book never existed, after all. That’s what I did…) Fortunately, Colin wrote that over 20 years ago and he’s learned much since then. =) Plus he’s the creative guy on Torment and Adam and I aren’t going to let him get too close to the gameplay systems. Just kidding. (Mostly. ;) )

But we’ve always felt that he owes us for polluting our campaigns with his bizarre passion for elves. Thankfully, Colin seems to have gotten through his elf-fetish years but his penance isn’t yet complete. He has apologized before, but somehow I find it lacking. I don't know about you, but I want to see him say it. So as part of our update celebrating this Stretch Goal, Colin will apologize publicly for this sin of his youth through a special video.

I think that basically describes a lot of writers for me, very few have pleased me with everything they've written.

Speaking of Kickstarter so far I've backed the following:

Fashion:

Board Games:

Videogames:

Comics:
I love the $10 "Guilt Pledge" level :applause:
Am I really supposed to believe two people have pledged $10,000 or more? That they've got $10,000 just sitting around their house collecting dust or something?

This isn't like an investment with a chance of return, this is just someone handing over $10,000.
That game looks pretty bad...
I had a hard time understanding what this is. So it's basically a MMO? Is there singleplayer?

It looks like an MMO that can be played in a single-player mode?

We knew Garriott would be bringing one out for a while now. Doesn't really look like my thing, though. Ultima Underworld was the only Ultima I ever really got in to, anyway. If it does well, I might give it a second look. Curious exactly how their combat system will work.

EDIT: But on a more interesting note, early gameplay footage from Shadowrun Returns!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MiMjQwd2VE&feature=youtu.be

Looks pretty damn intriguing to me.

Hm. Seems that Garriot's game isn't an MMO. Still looks like it'll be a persistent-world multiplayer-focused game, but... not an MMO. Regardless of what the final game is, it's kind of weird that someone so ostentatiously wealthy as Garriott would use Kickstarter in the first place.

I don't think that the dude who's fresh off winning a $28 million lawsuit against NCsoft, and who is selling his castle so that he can move in to his other castle, really needs my money to get his game out the door.

Why should he spend his money on making a game that his fans want?

I'm assuming that this is what they want? I've never been into Ultima.
