Yeah i was surfing around ebay with some money and i saw a dreamcast in buy it now for 37 bucks and thats with shipping included so i had to get it. It comes with one controller the VMU, the game Sega GT and the cables to hook it to my tv. I couldnt pass it up for 37.50 so now im wondering if there is anything else i should get or any good games that anyone recomends. I gotta couple of days before i get it. Also was that a pretty good deal for a dreamcast?

Heres the ended auction.

Seems to be a fair price for the system, seeing as it is in good shape. As for things you might want to pick up, I'd recommend, firstly, to get some composite cables for the system. RF is gonna look pretty nasty! As far as games go, I'm not sure what you are into, but here is a list of stuff you might want to look into:

Sonic Adventure
Sonic Adventure 2
Skies of Arcadia
Grandia II
Shenmue
Shenmue 2
Marvel vs. Capcom
Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Capcom vs. SNK
Jet Grind Radio
Crazy Taxi
Power Stone
Power Stone 2

Those are just a few... there are really too many good games to list!

+Soul Calibur - the greatest fighting game of all time. But if you've already played SC2, then don't bother. SC3 wasn't as good though...

I though DOA was pretty good. So was Guilty Gear and chu-chu Rocket. Crazy Taxi is still played in my house once in a while.

Well for now im gonna look around at stores for a cheap AV cable as i wanted that originally but overall i think i made out pretty well. I found quake 3 arena at a thrift store near by for a dollar today so i had to get that.

I enjoyed Record of Lodoss War, Bangai-O, Fatal Fury Mark of the Wolves, Last Blade 2, Street Fighter 3 3rd Strike and Double Impact, and of course, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure for the Dreamcast. Also, if your Dreamcast was made before October 2000, you can run homebrew emulators and games on the system without the need of a mod chip

If you're into mech games at all I highly recommend Gundam Side Story. Don't let the Gundam name scare you away, it really is an excellent mech game and doesn't require you to be all that familiar with the Gundam universe to enjoy it.

Over winter break I picked up an entire set for 175 bucks. Included:

Dreamcast and all cables
4 controllers (I have since bought 3 more at 2 bucks each to replace the generic ones)
5 controller extensions
4 VMUs
5 rumble packs
28 games

had I waited a few weeks, after I got my new job, I could have picked one up from there for 25 bucks with one controller, and added 3 more for 6 bucks, 2 VMUs for 16 bucks and a few games at 10 bucks a pop, although I did get quite a few good games with it, and the ones I didn't want I gave to my cousins who have my original system and the others I didn't want I traded at my store for games I did want such as Shenmue, Crazy Taxi 1 and 2 and Jet Grind Radio (I had to return JGR because it didn't want to boot up for some reason)

anyways, if you're interested and can't find a certain game, PM me and I'll see if my store has it - we're the only store around the area (if not county) that still carries DC games. I can definitely hook you up in that case

Nice list. Basically those are the essentials.

But be sure to add Space Channel 5 and Seaman to that list as well.
Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram
Only if he can get the twin stick import controller for it. That thing is unplayable with the regular DC controller.

In case you don't feel like selling off a kidney to buy some of those games, I might recommend the Sega Sports games from around that time - NHL2K1 and NFL2K1 both great games available for under $3 each. Also have to say I loved the DC version of NFL Blitz. Also King Of Colosseum if you like wrestling games - it's up there with No Mercy and Fire Pro.

How about RE:Code Veronica........? eh?

Ready to Rumble round 2...........plenty of fun for you and some friends

friends sold seperately of course

The first list is Awsome, and lotes of the rest are great also.
I would throw in Tony Hawks pro-skater 1(the best version save for 2x on Xbox.)
Any DC game made by Capcom will be a good pick.
Toy Commander is fun multiplayer.
Skies of Arcadia.
Jet Set Radio!!
REZ(import)

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 was on DC as well; great game. Samba de Amigo is a lot of fun as well.

Don't have anything to add that hasn't already mentioned, but I'll second the recs for Record of Lodoss War and Chu Chu Rocket.

i don't know.. dreamcasts all its good games were ported over to xbox/ps2 .. and all the good games in development were ported over to those systems..

i've purchased 3 separate dreamcasts that were DOA.. meaning they were all froze up.. from what i understand is that they are extremely touchy.. so i would steer clear of them..

I've owned 3 Dreamcasts and have never had problems other than on my latest one, which is one of the last few manufactured and it won't play homebrew or backup copies, but that's due to Sega including a lockout system on their last few batches

To add to the lists I enjoyed Sword of the Berserk, MDK2 and Cannon Spike a good two player co-op shooter. Also if your into imports the first Headhunter is cool.

If you can afford it, there's definitely enough shmups to keep you satisfied:

Gigawing / Gigawing 2
Ikaruga
Border Town
Castle of Shikigama 2
Psyvariar II
Bangai-O
Zero Gunner 2
Trizeal
Gunbird 2
Mars Matrix
etc, etc.

I bought a used Dreamcast with controller and browser disc in great shape from EBgames when they were going for 19 bucks. Still going strong without any problems at all. I think it's still my greatest game purchase to this day.

Dreamcast was solid. It had the easy pick up and play games.
.... now I feel like plugging it in again.

I would have to say my favorites were Seaman, Unreal Tournament, Quake III, and Sonic Adventures 1 and 2. Soul Calibur I thought sucked on the DC.

i understand.. and i also understand that i bought my DCs at pawn shops.. which are notorious for carrying "broken" goods.. although every other system i bought from there work perfect.

from my understanding that in some DCs there is a controller port issue meaning theres a short in it that breaks if certain conditions are met.. i happened upon 3 of those.. i sold them to people who knew how to fix them.. and good for them.. but yeah.. other than a miniscle amount of software that is still "unique" to the system.. i would steer clear.

Considering you can often find the system relatively cheap and there is a website/forum devoted to *cough* backup ROMs/ISOs for *cough* "free" I think that saying to stay completely clear of a system that was ahead of its time is rather harsh.

I've been thinking of picking up a game called Tech Romancer, a mech fighting game by capcom.. its got some decent reviews and looks pretty different than most fighters.. anyone play it? Seems very rare as well.

Also looking to buy a couple of those agetec arcade sticks if I can find a good deal.

As far as fighting games go, I have quite a few imported ones. Also, that arcade stick is a MUST BUY if you are down with some fighting games. I spent many hours pounding away at that stick playing Capcom vs. SNK back in college.

Some imported goodness:
Capcom vs SNK 2
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Street Fighter III W-Impact
Guilty Gear X
Fighting Vipers 2
Virtua Fighter 3tb
King of Fighters 2002

Phantasy Star Online is also ridiculously addictive for no reason at all. I spent way too much time tying up the phone line playing that game online.
No love for Ecco? Even to this day it is a very beautiful and colorful game.
The sad part about Dreamcast, there're so many good games which were overlooked since it wasn't a popular mainstream system, I could name Ecco, but there're also many other stellar titles. Besides all the 2D fighters and shooters from Capcom, how about Crazy Taxi (I'm still playing this game)? Outtrigger? Racers (best ones are Test Drive Le Mans, Daytona, Ferrari F355)? Puzzle games (Bust-A-Move 4, Bomberman, and Mr. Driller)?

If you add Europe and/or Jp only titles, the list becomes godly. (Rez, Guilty Gear, Super Puzzle Fighters, Cleopatra, Densha de Go, Culdcept, plus all the shooters toward the end of life cycle.)

Thank goodness some of you mentioned Ecco, Space Channel 5, Capcom vs. SNK, and Sword of the Berserker: Gut's Rage. I can't believe someone actually had the nerve to say that the near perfect port of Soul Caliber was not worthy, but to each his own I say (I say fuck to you, kind sir:booty:; I kid of course) .

IMHO, here are 8 more you should look for; publisher and/or region in ():

Vanishing Point (Acclaim)
F1 World Grand Prix for Dreamcast (VideoSystem; Japan)
18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker (Sega)
Expendable (Rage; US and Japan avl.)
Metropolis Street Racer (Bizzarre Creations -- the precursor to the Project Gotham Racer Series)

Slave Zero (Infograms)
Project Justice (Capcom)
Flag to Flag (Sega -- this is for anyone that misses to good 'ol days of C.A.R.T./Champ Car)

The system is probably overheating ( a known, common problem due to the tiny exhaust fan on the unit). Instead of jury-rigging another, larger fan, I chose to find the smallest desk fan possible and keep it very close to the exhaust vent. Works great.

I still have my dreamcast and I love it to death. I have 5 controllers, 3 vmus, 1 generic memory card, a rumble pack and a million games. I remember back when they were clearing out stock at Ebgames and controllers were only 4 bucks. I jumped on that deal as you can see.

Here's a couple more games I didn't notice anyone listed and that I enjoyed:

Psychic Force 2012 - A great fighting game and very unusual in that you fought while levitating, which allowed for more than just left and right movement. Cool soundtrack too.

Phantasy Star Online - An online RPG that can be played off-line as well. As soon as the title screen came on and the theme started playing, I knew this game would be special. I loved the mood the game sets and the feeling you get while exploring the worlds and battling monsters.

I put many hours into it just playing by myself and I imagine it's even better when playing with others online. Sadly, Sega no longer hosts servers for this game but there is still fun to be had playing off-line.

Just hooked my DC up moments ago and then I see this thread. Awesome timing.

Ive got (counts) at least 8 Mem cards, so I just went through and had to figure out what games got saved where. Then I threw in Grandia 2. It's still awesome (and better than 3...).

Couple of recommendations from me would be Seaman and Typing of the Dead. Not only fun, but it will confuse the shit out of anyone watching you play either of them.

Top 2 faves are Omikron and NBA2K. (I don't like any of the 2K series 2K1 and after, too "hip hop" for me and don't look as nice as 2K.) Plus both are cheap. Omikron you can find complete for around $5, NBA2K you can find usually in abundance complete for $1.

If your into survival horror type games check out BlueStinger and Resident Evil: Code Veronica for dreamcast if you havent played it. i own both and highly recommend.

I actually started mine up the other day had a craving for ecw hardcore revolution, even though one of the worst games ever made

Illbleed. Seriously, I piss myself laughing every time I play this game.

Don't hate Illbleed if you haven't made it to the last "movie". It is HILARIOUS!

Seconding Illbleed! That game was way fun and pretty innovative. You had to make sure you didn't get scared to death. The first stage turns a lot of people off though, it's really hard and really long.

I'll also second Tech Romancer. If you're a fan of Mecha anime, it's a ton of fun. If you're not, you might not get all of the appeal. Regardless though, Project Justice is still one of the main reasons I plug my DC in. One of the finest fighting games of all time, for my money.

On the import tip, Sakura Taisen games are pretty excellent. Japanese heavy, but really fun StratRpgs. And man, Ikaruga...
Frame Gride is pretty awesome. And pretty much any of the RPGs are quality. Even Evolution if you groove on random dungeons. Skies is one of the best games ever. If you like RPGs, you have to check it out.

brb. leaving work to go home and play Dreamcast.
