OK total newb Anime question here. I am putting together a collection of movies for my new Home Theatre System, and I know nothing about Anime. I have always been interested, just haven't really watched any. Anyway, where should i start? What would be a good top 5 or top 10 movies to look for?

I have done a little research and a few keep popping up like Ghost in the Shell, Ghost in the Shell 2, Spirited Away, Akira, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Ninja Scroll and Animatrix. Are any of these on sale? Any input from you guys would be appreciated.

Also, any special editions or anything I should look for to take full advantage of my Plasma HDTV with surround system?
Get akira, I just got it and it is really good. This is a pretty good price, even the signature series runs for $20.

I hope they have some NGEs platinum, I have the thinpack but it feels inadequate.
Woo!!! I've heard nothing but good things about that one.
I consider myself a moderate otaku - willing to watch even the most unusual anime. But for some reason, I couldn't stand Excel Saga.

Proceed with caution - it's definitely not for everyone and should really be watched by those with a fair amount of anime background and some understanding of Japanese culture.

That is, unless, ADV adds along linear notes like they did with Azumanga Daioh (fantastic series, btw).
Woo!!! I've heard nothing but good things about that one.
Allow me!

I cannot stand Excel Saga. There are certain episodes I may chuckle at, but most of them drive me up a wall with their incessant, hyperactive nature and failed attempts at "humor". The main character, Excel, is the very definition of the word 'annoying'.

That said, I can still understand why some people might like it. I just prefer more subdued comedies such as Azumanga Daioh.

Huh? You think the thinpack is inadequate? Why? I have it and I consider it one of the best DVD purchases I have ever made. I love it!

For anime my favorites in order:

Full Metal Panic
Samurai Champloo
Cowboy Bebop
Neon Genesis

I have not found much else beyond these that I like or consider worth buying. Full Metal Alchemist is cool, but there are too many episodes/DVDs to buy, they better release some budget thinpack or I won't be buying them.

Just saw link for the $9.99 Akira, I take it that is a good deal? Never seen Akira, do I get it for this price? Includes a CD too, how is that?

As discussed in almost every other thread that brings up ADV's thinpak sets, it's missing the awesome packaging and nice booklets, along with all of the bonus materials (such as commentary tracks). Some people like to have all that stuff.

My sentiments exactly...

the Eva Platinum singles are great for the booklets and bonuses... not too big on the easily-ruined slipcovers though...

no Evangelion singles in Evansville, so sayeth the website, so I am requesting help from more fortunate CAGs.

Sorry, I don't follow every thread that comes up. I'm far from Anime guru. I love the NGE pack, I bought them to watch the entire series and what ever is missing, as long as it is not any of the actual episodes, does not bother me. For only $46 it seemed too good to pass up.

Thanks for the link to that other thread... even though it is a month old.

Thanks for the reply's and PMs.

Here is a list of what I am starting with. At the end are some non anime, but otherwise recommended. I will not be getting everything on the list anytime soon, but I think it's a good starting point.

I'm hoping that these will be available tomorrow when I go.

Anybody know if maybe Gunslinger Girl has dropped along with these?
Only managed to find Area 88 and Samurai Gun with box when I went today. Kind of sucks...and I too really wanted Excel Saga. Turns out no BBs in my area have had any for months if not a year now.

Honestly i really dont understand why everyone tells ppl who wanna start watching anime to watch Akira. Yeah sure it was revolutionary at the time and its considered a "classic" but its really not that great of a movie imo.

There's no opinoin requried, it's fact that it's not that good. ;)

The reason it's so big is because it was one of the first unct anime movies in the U.S. So when people started gaining interest...

In my opinion the first two you should start off with are the Manga duo of Ninja Scroll and Ghost in the Shell. Both have great dubs, good story, and a awesome 6.1 mix for your new system.
I love Akira, but only watched 20 minutes of Ninja Scroll before turning it off. Weird. I still need to see Ghost in the Shell.
Akira is alright, but it no way deserves the attention it gets. I thought Ninja Scroll had some original villains, though if I remember right, they're based off some ancient Japanese lore. To each his own, I guess. Otherwise we'd be on DBZ movie 86 by now.

To be far, Akira has a awfully sexy sound mix too.
To be far, Akira has a awfully sexy sound mix too.
Perhaps - although a lot of that sex appeal is lost to me since it's usually a guy's name.

But really, there's no "one anime" to start people off on, although I'd personally recommend some of Miyazaki's works - Esp. Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke). It's funny, serious, has beautiful artwork and a fantastic soundtrack.

And it can be appreciated by people of all ages. I saw Akira as a kid and couldn't take the intensity. Although with kids now a days, they may be just fine.

It can be reasonably argued that Akira was the pinnacle of the golden age of anime. When anime budgets didn't matter, the U.S was about to be owned by Japan, and before computers screwed everything up. ;)

Before I open my Samurai Gun box/dvd, which I really really want to see, any CAGs take on it? Reviews on Animeondvd.com are some of the most mixed I've ever seen. From C on the first volume to an A on the next to a B+ after that.

You can't go from dissing Akira one second to praising Ghost in the Shell and Ninja Scroll the next - that's just not right! Ninja Scroll is one of the single worst anime films I've ever had the displeasure of seeing. I suspect its fame is due to the same reasons you cited for Akira. I'll be slightly more merciful for GitS, though the films aren't anything special (heck, GitS 2 is simply terrible) when compared to the TV series that followed.

This is all one man's opinion, of course. ;)

KingNES - great deal!

man, the Evansville, IN BB sucks something awful... only Sakura Diaries 1 is available according to the list thus far.

Interested in your spare Jubei-chan set, and really wanting Excel and Evangelion 5, 6, and 7...

OK I picked up the following using the animerica coupons for all of them.

Ghost in the Shell Special Edition
Appleseed
Samurai Gun 01 W/Box
Animatrix

Akira is on the way in the mail

I also picked up a DMC 3 SE for $15 with the GGC.

If I remember, Ninja Scroll was pretty graphic. That is if I am thinking of the right one.

I tried really hard to watch Mononoke, but I kept falling asleep. It must be real boring. ;)

Spirited away was decent and it has a unique story. Good rental.

I really liked the Cowboy Bebop movie despite its criticisms.

Still want to see Ghost in the Shell. Can't get myself to pay $3.50 to rent when its so short.

I'm really not in to anime, but there are a few I really like that I already mentioned. So, perhaps you should take a look at those. If you can rent it first, my Hastings has a TON of anime old and new. Too bad a few volumes are missing because of dip college kids not returning them.

Added them. The Jubei-chan is interesting. I got one at my best buy but had assumed it was store specific as the thing is like a good 2-3 years old at this point. Must have found some in a chain wearhouse somewhere...
Excel Saga Perfect Collection - $35
If this isn't low enough for someone, I want the friggin' box for this series!!! :D I'll pay $10 plus shipping for it.

(That applies to anyone who has it now, in mint/near mint shape, with that plastic text wrap-on still there.)
Akira is alright, but it should only be recommended as a starter film if you're trying to scare someone away from anime for life.
For real. I watched it when I was in middle school two or three times and couldn't make sense of the film. I then bought the super sexy LE two-disc DVD tin when it was redubbed (since it's a "classic") and it was a little clearer. Once college hit, it really made sense. Helluva journey. Not even religon is that complicated. :whistle2:#

About the Excel Saga and Jubei-Chan sets, are they missing any features or bonus that came/are on the individual releases?

Few more i noticed while there earlier today dunno if they were posted yet though:

Gilgamesh Vol 1 $9.99
Scrapped Princess Vol. 1 $11.99
Avenger $19.99 (the non-Anime Legends version)

Damn Jubei-Chan! I think I was actually looking for that one at my BB but didn't see it. And Planetes, shit I did see those though but didn't think to check them. Didn't think they would be apart of the sale.

Agreed, the story is a mess, guess that happens when a bunch of manga gets condensed into a two hour movie. But the animation is just amazing if you keep reminding yourself this was all hand drawn.

I went and picked up a bunch of the anime coupons at BB tonight, though I didn't pick up any of the clearanced titles, as my BB didn't have the ones I was looking for (Planetes 1/2, Excel Saga, DNAngel, and one or two others). I'll probably check out the other BB around here and see what they have.

Yeah, but I'd also have to agree that it falls flat as a movie.
is gravion zwei another one of those cool action with 10 lb. of fan service animes?
After seeing Mizuki in Zwei you better add another 8 or so lbs to that total ^^

Its a cool show, I liked it a lot. It has a bit of everything.
