Hey, just in time for the coupon there are some pretty substantial anime price markdowns. They are generally ADV releases. Some are online as well. This list also includes some of the relevant previous markdowns as well. At this point some of those are very YMMV as far as being instock in store and no longer offered online. Happy hunting.

I'll be at the other best buy tomorrow so I will see if I find anything else.

The Love Hina Movie Collection was $23.99 ($20.39 A/C) when I picked one up this afternoon... if that's anything that could be added to the discount anime list. Probably YMMV like the Jubei-chan and Excel Saga boxes, I'm sure.
Also snagged Magic Knight Rayearth 2, but that's not discounted.
I picked up a few spare Animerica mags if anyone wants one. I may throw one in if someone buys or trades for my spare Love Hina Spring Special DVD before the coupon expires.

I ordered NGE Platinum 3 and 5 from the website. Just need number 1 with the boxset and I'll be complete. Not that Circuit City usally carries much anime but has anyone tried pricematching there yet?

Here's some new ones to add to the list. Taken off of justbarelymovin's list on DVDTalk.com

Devil Lady Collection
Gantz Volume 1+ Box
Samurai X OVA Collection

I would definitely recommend Samurai X OVA to anyone that is even remotely interested in anime. Excellent high production values and anime that leads into one of my absolute favorite animes, Rurouni Kenshin.

Devil Lady is one that I thought would have been apart of the sale, but didn't think of looking up, so I'm definitely going back tomorrow to get.

And Gantz is one that I've heard mixed reviews on, but mostly good things.

Anyway, anyone care to tell me if Samurai Gun is worthwhile or any good? Also, how about Madlax?

Not too bad on Kenshin, shame non of my stores have em, ADV's got the better deal if i cant use the coupon. Gantz is a really good show, up until the really stupid ending (the manga is so much better). But you may want to pass on buying the first volume w/ box, next week the first season boxset comes out (discs 1-6) for $30 after coupon, discs 7-10 come out on the 28th, but coupons expire then, so you could at least get the first boxset.
Also, how about Madlax?
Madlax is pretty good -- has a somewhat similar feel to Noir. Main downside is that it takes about halfway through the series before anything really starts to make sense.

I came across Banner of the Stars II Vol 1 for 11.99 I checked their internal website and all three volumes are 11.99 also but they say 29.99 on the website we can access. Wish I had the URL for their internal store site would make finding deals easier heh.

Bleh, I thought Gantz was truly awful, but for some reason I ended up sticking through it until the end to see how ridiculous it could get. Not only does it operate at a frustratingly slow pace, but each and every character is simply awful, and they all act in completely illogical ways at all times. If the show even slightly touched on all of the mysteries it brings up (likely a consequence of being an anime based on a manga that's still running), or if it was even remotely well-animated, I might have enjoyed it more. Oh, also, the main character is one of the most unlikeable anime characters I've ever encountered, and all of the female characters are complete sluts (with giant breasts, of course).

Samurai gun... I have not seen, but I've heard so-so things.

Madlax is pretty dry and yawn-inducing, but has a killer soundtrack by Yuki Kajiura. Buy the CDs, but avoid the show itself.

i am so all over the Saiyuki disks at that price. I saw Samurai Gun and immediatly thought it was Gun Frontier.

NGE:p volume six and FMP?F! volume one with box and board game came today. Hopefully NGE:p voulme seven will get restocked and shipped to me. :whistle2:D

Wow!, i know best buy gets there stuff in early, but normally its 2-3 days before, not 8 days, im gonna head out there as soon as im done eating, thanks for lettin me know!

Yaeh, I just thought about getting Gantz as the boxset because it is cheaper and itcomes out next week. But now I'm really on the fence on it. I mean, one good reveiw of it and another meh to horrible review of it.

Here's another question about, anyone know if the new boxset will come with everything (i.e. not like the ADV thinpack releases)?

It can be very YMMV by location and by item. I know that I got the martian successor nadeisco essential anime collection dvd 1 a full 2 weeks before release date at a best buy once. Alot of stuff is like 3-4 days ahead. Make sure to know what the price should be though, as i remember when they put out the DNAngel thinpack collection early it was mistakenly marked at full retail.

Went back today looking for the Aniamerica mag/coupon, didn't find it but they do have Angel Links Complete Collection for $15.99 (hope no one posted it yet).

I bought an extra one for a CAGer who may want it but can't find it too, lemme know soon though if anyone wants it cuz otherwise I'll take it back and get another title.

I'd recommend reading the scanlations of the manga (as it is not licensed in the US) first before i'd recommend the series. I thought the series was really good, the only bad part is the fact that they had to condense 224 chapters of manga (and still going) into a 26 episode lot. They basically took the first 100 chapters of the manga, and threw in some really shitty plothole full ending to finish it off. The voiceacting (both dub & sub) are really good, art is well drawn, a lot of computer graphics in it, gory, violent, etc.

The first boxset (out 2/21 - $45/$30 after coupon) is basically the first season of the series (discs 1-6, 13 episodes). Then the 2nd boxset will be the 2nd season (discs 7-10), no idea what the price will be.

ADV really stretched the limit with the first season, they did only 2 episodes per dvd for first 5, and 3 eps on 6th, could've easily put the first season on two dual layer discs. If you like gory, edge of your seat action horror anime, its a must buy.

Unfortunately, i checked my Best buy and they didnt have it in yet. So i would put the YMMV on whether yours has it available now.
Big O is also really cheap at BB, I think its $40 for the whole season
The Big O sets were clearanced like two sales ago. I very much doubt that any BB stills has any. I picked up one Big O from them and the other online from Rightstuf or DDD. Something like that, don't remember right now. Oh, I was at my BB and they barely had anything left so whoever's on the fence about thsi deal better jump soon before it's all gone. Oh and did I mention I didn't find any Devil Lady Collection.

That's most likely YMMV on how much your store has, as the closest one here had about 3-4 shelves (sets not individual) full of anime.

Just got back from a different best buy than i tried yesterday, they had a pretty vast anime selection compared to the store i normally go to, but i was in a rush so i didnt really look around. They had 3 of the Gantz Season 1 boxes, all marked as $44.95 ($31.50 ac). I think the Season 2 box has been delayed, cuz i cant seem to find it online anymore...

Ok out of the following I picked up the other day:

Ghost in the Shell Special Edition
Appleseed
Samurai Gun 01 W/Box
Animatrix

I watched Appleseed and thought the graphics/picture quality was great! Although I am still not quite into the whole anime thing, I enjoyed the movie.

Then I started to watch Ghost in the Shell, and the graphic quality seemed pretty much like other animated movies I seen. It just didn't seem nearly as detailed/fluid as Appleseed. I'm guessing because it's an older movie. Anyway, I found it hard to get into. After about 15-20 minutes I turned it off.

Maybe someone can explain the significance of GITS, and why it's on so many top 10 Anime lists.

Not to bash the movie or anything, I am just looking for more movies with awesome PQ/SQ (Picture Quality/Sound Quality).

I have watched a few of the animatrix clips from the website, and it looks pretty cool, mostly because I like the Matrix series. I look forward to watching it more for the story than the PQ/SQ.

Anyway, that's my take so far, what other Anime would you guys recommend with PQ/SQ along the same lines of Appleseed?
Anyway, that's my take so far, what other Anime would you guys recommend with PQ/SQ along the same lines of Appleseed?
None. Appleseed used cel-chaded CGI for its animation, not traditional hand-drawn animation. That's why it looks different from everything else.

Are you aware that anime often has a plot, too? Try paying attention to that.

I tried watching Star Wars: A New Hope everyone said it was good and all but the special effects were bad didn't even look like CGI. Everything looks like it was shot in the late 70's. I turned it off after 20 minutes I'll watch the Phantom Menace from now on instead.

"Are you saying you bought these anime because they are suppose to look good?"

Actually in my original question in post #49 I did say "Also, any special editions or anything I should look for to take full advantage of my Plasma HDTV with surround system?"

I didn't say that PQ/SQ was the only thing I was concerned with, but it is definately a factor for me.

Kirin Lemon Said:

A little condescending don't you think? As I said, I am looking forward to animatrix, as I look forward to the story (plot) as opposed to PQ/SQ.

Drahken Said:

Haha I like your comparison. Except I like Star Wars. Maybe it's because I saw it so long ago that the graphics don't bother me. But, it wasn't just the graphics in GITS, it was the story/plot that I couldn't get into. As I said, I'm not bashing the movie it's just not my cup of tea. I may go back at a later date and try watching it again.

Anyway, I wasn't trying to pick a fight, just stating my observation and asking if there are more anime with high PQ/SQ. Evidently there aren't.

See, thats the thing, just because theres good PQ/AQ doesnt mean its a good anime.

Take Urda The Third Reich, its a 40 min OVA done in cell shaded CGI like Appleseed, and the storyline is complete crap.

Check out Macross Plus either the OVA or the Movie. It has very good music/sound and a good balance of action and story. It was done in 1994 and still holds up pretty well.

Bezerker Said:

I get your point, I should have been clearer in my request. I own plenty of movies that are PQ/SQ marvels but leave much to be desired in storyline. I'm a simple guy that appreciates High Definition anything (especially Football), and big budget movies on DVD with lots of action/explosions etc. I like to kick back and watch senseless violence in the highest PQ/SQ possible and not have to think too much. I do plenty of that during the day with my 2 jobs.

I was looking for good anime that also has good/great PQ/SQ (which appears to be non-existant). As I said, I hadn't seen any anime (unless you count my sons Pokemon/YuGhiOh) until getting these.

I totally get your point Bezerker, I just don't get too deep into my movies. If I wanted deep I would rather read a book.

Drahken Said:

Cool thanks, I will check that one out.

PS another anime newb question. What's OVA?
hotwls13 Said:

Original Video Animation/Original Animated Video it's pretty much Anime that went direct to video and didn't air on TV. The Macross Plus OVA is four 45 minute episodes. They spliced them all together cut some parts, added some parts and re-arrenged things just a bit for the movie version. I kind of prefer the OVA to the movie version but I have them both anyways.

Love hina volume 4 and 5 are 11.99 confirmed at Cutler Ridge Fl Best Buy, also many older titles are starting to be put out. The clerks say they are cleaning house of sorts and expect to see more older titles as they phase out.

You're not going to find anything that looks like Appleseed- very few anime adopt a style that would benfit from HD- most just use computers as a fast way to produce the traditional 2D look. The few that adopted CG did it early in the technology's lifesapn (read: looks like crap now.)

That said- look into Gankutsuou. Still 2D, but amazingly colored (everything is patterns.)Plus, it's a damn good show. It could work for ya.

BGC2040 was a damn steal for $7.

Makes me kind of wish that I signed up for that Reward Zone nonsense when War of the Cruise came out.

I worry that Gankutsuou might suffer from the "flaw" of being too intellectual for a lot of people. But holy shit, is it ever awesome. I love it to death.

My Best Buy had a bunch of stuff, though I ended up with:

Gantz V1 with box
Jubei Chan Complete
Robotech Collection 4 (Borders Clearance)
Samuari Gun V1 with box

All are up for trade. I'm really looking to Evangelion Platinum volumes 2-5 and 7. If you have them maybe we can work someting out. I'll also go back to check my store if anyone is looking for something specific. :)

All DVD are encoded in the same resolution. Some have better picture quality than others, but you are never going to take advantage of your HDTV without real HD. DVD is of terrible quality compared to HD. Some DVD do look better than others, but it's still the same low resolution no matter what.

Can I ask where you got that list? PQ/SQ is something im very interested in these days.

Yes, I know. I stated that some DVD are much better quality, but those are still encoded at an ambarrissingly low resolution. You don't get that lost resolution magically back using a newer DVD player or PC (although you can make it look better). Higher bit rates don't mean more resolution. And upconverting does not add missing data either, although it does look "better".

Anyway, back on topic.

My Full Metall Panic? Box thing with Volume 1 came today. Can't wait to watch Fumoffu, the reviews on Amazon seem promising and I loved the entire first series, very entertaining and fun.

Thanks OP, I almost bought this for over double the price a few weeks ago.
Can I ask where you got that list? PQ/SQ is something im very interested in these days.
Try the AVS Forum, most likely they keep a thread dedicated to what most consider "Reference" DVD.

Might try DVDTalk too.
Can I ask where you got that list? PQ/SQ is something im very interested in these days.
Yes I did get the list from www.avsforum.com. They also have a thread on there somewhat talking about anime/animation that has good PQ/SQ.

Here is a sample of the animated movies they recommended:

Appleseed
Kaena: The Prophecy
Steamboy
Voices of a Distant Star
Metropolis
Wonderful Days
Howl's Moving Castle
MindGame
Titan A.E.
Road to Eldorado
The Iron Giant

I don't have the direct links though, sorry.

So.. Eva really is going for cheap. This ****ing sucks. I bought the whole platinum set just over a year ago for over $100.

If they are going to make ANOTHER release, maybe I should put my set on eBay.. the newer set will hopefully be in HD and true widescreen.

If the series is ever released in widescreen you should boycott it. The series was done in 4:3 where the movies are in 16:9. Aslo, the whole Platinum set was a digital restoration. The next set might be "HD" but the actual quality might not be any better. You can only make standard definition look so good.

I honestly think the only HD-DVD (and/)or Blu-Ray discs that will be worth purchasing will be of content that were filmed in HD, like 24 and the last half of The X-Files.

Yeah, that was a dumb comment I made out of a minute of frustration. It's a great deal to those of you who weren't able to complete the set. I was over it after a minute and completely forgot.

But what's stupid is I never watched the platinum dvds since I bought them. I just watched a few minutes to compare the quality to the older set, which was easily noticable. I guess I didn't feel the need to watch the series a fourth time. I'll have to someday though.
