Yeah, that was a dumb comment I made out of a minute of frustration.
I didn't mean to stomp on your post. I mearly meant to inform. :D

As it is right now the only benefit of HD-DVD and Blu-ray in regards to the DVD's out right now is storage capacity. You can fit probably whole series on one disc and probably not take much to more room on another one. Unless something was actually filmed in HD you won't see much of a differnce in picture quality. Because even if they were to double the bit rate of the standard HQ transfer you can only take what has been done previously so far. As it stands right now with players possibly being 500 for HD-DVD and 1200 for Blu-Ray I think I'll sit this format war out for a while.

You do know, most films/movies are not digitally recorded and thus can be put on HD because they are recorded on film, right? Which means they can be easily made HD.

As far as animation, most of the older cartoons were done on film, so they can be transferred to HD. Just google Cinemascope Cartoons as an example.

Some newer cartoons like Simpson's I don't think can, but many others might be. Saying the only advantage is storage capacity is being short sighted. Have you seen Shrek, Toy Story, or Finding Nemo in HD when it's being broadcast? That is a sight to behold.

Things like Shrek, Toy Story, Finding Nemo, or most modern anime that are all CG do have the benefit that as long as you have the original sources available you can render at a higher resolution.

I read that three times until I finally understood that you weren't calling Toy Story anime.

I was just referring to about 98% of what is currently out there you can only digitially enhance old stock so far, I should have been more specific.

I just watched Akira, and I thought it was pretty good. PQ/SQ wasn't that great, but it's an old movie. I think I will go back and try to watch GITS again.

I'm beginning to think you place way too much emphasis on sound and picture quality. Animation in general, and probably even more so anime, isn't a film genre that is exactly based around PQ and the SQ generally deals with the ADR work more than anything else. I'll be the first to admit watching high level CGI animation like Advent Children can be interesting for a little bit, but you should watch a movie for important things like plot, story, character development, etc.

Both the story and visuals are a form of art and a film can be enjoyed for one or both reasons. It's when you have both that something is a masterpiece.

Besides, both are subjective anyway.

Flat sound makes action/thriller anime less enjoyable. Visuals... eh... I don't think are so important. Widescreen is a definite plus though. With a 56" HD set, stretching 4:3 can be painful.

It all depends on the series, though. For example, Tehxnolyze (probably spelled wrong) is 16:9 with amazing sound quality and great animation, encoded really well. It's immersive. It makes the suspensul series more thrilling, and the drama much more emotional. On the other hand, something like Dragonball, 4:3 with a flat stereo mix and 80's animation artifacted to hell and back (with shoddy encoding no less, 7-8 eps per disk low bitrate) is just as enjoyable as it would be 16:9 in 5.1 because it's just a lighthearted story rather than a cinematic experience.

Went to my BB and they didn't have much left from the list. And this is right when I find the coupons. Oh well.....Oh and BB has deleted many more animes from their system that they will no longer be keeping so be prepared for another clearance to come up soon...some anime that I know of that have been deleted from the system are most Madlax/s and Samurai Gun 2 and 3. They haven't been clearanced out yet.

YOU should watch a movie for the plot, story, character development etc. I for one, can't stand to watch or read anything by shakespeare, yet they are supposedly works of art.

I on the other hand do put a lot of emphasis in PQ/SQ, because that's what I enjoy. My take on it is I would like the PQ/SQ as real looking/sounding (not necessarily realistic) as possible. If the movie has a good plot/story/characters then that makes it an even better movie.

A for instance is Pearl Harbor. I don't like the movie, especially Ben Afleck, but the bombing scene is Awesome. I have put the DVD in and just watched that scene alone and then turned it off.

Everyone is different, and maybe anime is more analytical than I would like to get. To each his own, but don't tell me what I should be watching a movie for or what should be important to me.

If story/plot/characters is all you care about, maybe you should pick up a book.

Im debating whether or not to get Gantz vol. 8,9,10 with the 30% off coupon. Do you think those may be clearenced out anytime soon or should i just get them?

I snagged the last Samurai Gun from my BB. I was going to get Saiyuki but they didnt have Vol 1 so i passed. They were also out of Area 88
