So, are you getting the new iPod for $99?

I may end up getting one for the wife, but I wont get one for myself. At $99 for 512meg, its not a bad device, but I have to wonder about the lack of screen.

My Parents are going to be getting one for my sisters for their birthdays.
I won't be getting one thou, I've been planing to buy a iPod Photo for the last few months.

But I might put that off, That $500 Mac Mini is looking very tempting.

got to have that... my pockets are usually full of stuff.. cellphone.. bigwallet.. sonydigitalacamera...
Stick of gum size makes it perfect

i may have considered it a month ago but i already got an mp3 player for christmas. but even if this was a month ago, i dont think i'd wanna buy that for the price, just doesnt suit me.

I really think the big news is the $500 mac. But ultimately I think it'll prove fruitless for Apple. Now, I'm sure it will sell well and they'll give all sorts of numbers about how many units sold. Compared to the established pc industry, it'll be insignifigant.

No one ever points out that Apple was in such bad shape that the Ipod completely dominates their revenue stream. The new mini Imac is a stab to fix Apple computers. But the basic problem is there. There's no reason for me to get one. Absolutely none. Unless I just want a Mac to have a Mac. I know the mac diehards talk about how it's so superior to a PC. I think that's poppycock.

I've used macs at school, they're okay. They're not bad but not better than the invention of buttered toast. I have absolutely no reason to want one. There's no software app unless I'm into publishing or A/V editing. And if I'm into that I'm not spending a measly $500 to $600 bucks.

I think it is a ripoff.

Just get the $250 iPod Mini that is 4 GB and hopes 1,000 songs instead of one that holds like 100.

Apple has found that about 20% of the iPod PC users have switched over to Macs after useing and loveing the iPod. the idea behind the Mac Mini is to help switch over the other 80% of the iPod PC users.
The Mac Mini was not designed or intended for the all ready Mac user, its designed to help people switch.

And your right, unless your doing anything multimedia related (desktop publishing, CD/DVD Development, A/V editing, 3D modeling, Graphic design, ect.) a PC is just as Good as a Mac. minus the fact that the Mac has 1/10 the video game library as the PC.

Nope. I think for $99 for only 512 mb of memory without a screen is a little much for it and slightly a ripoff when you can get one of their other models for about $200 with I believe 4 gigabytes of memory. Also I need an mp3 player but I if I had to choose, I would get one of their other models or at least the one with 30 gigabytes on it. 512 isn't bad but when there is way better than why not and go for that. Now if this woul dhave $99 for 1 gigabyte's worht of memory than I would definitely be getting it.

That's a ripoff. My expandable MP3 player with a screen that has a 20 hour battery life off one AAA battery was $89.99. I gotta draw the line with Apple somewhere.

You can't compare it with regular Ipod as this one uses flash memory Not an internal compact harddrive. It is a lot lighter, never skips, and not many mechanical part to be broken compare to the harddrive counterpart.

That's why it has less storage; However, it is been done by other company with cheaper price, so I'm not interested.
Hey I'm just repeating what Think Secret said, and they are a very trust worthy Mac News/Rumor site.
There is no way that %20 of PC Ipod users have switcehd to macs. That would be well over 1 million.

Flash-based players are smaller, lighter, and more durable.

I thought all you guys spent a lot of time at the gym. I guess I was wrong...

Actually try in the thousands. 20% of the total (PC and Mac) iPod user base before this holiday season would have been 403,200 users. This Holiday Apple had a HUGE surge of people buying iPods (4.5 million), but when they released the info (in early Q3 2004) that 20% of PC iPod owners have switched the iPod user base was only 2,016,000.

but hey in all truth Surveys can be misleading and wrong. It all depends on how large of a group you poll and where you are taking the survey at.
haha, youve done it again apple, tampontastic!
I dunno man. Doesn't look like it will handle those heavy flow days! ;)

That's what I want to know. I checked around, and the 512mb flash drive by itself is that much.

Found it with a 256mb for $80, but still want to know about this half-gig business:

Cheap ass link

I think I might get one. I just wish it had an FM Tuner, then it would be no question. I don't need/want a screen. I want rechargable batt, light and 512 mb for $100 (I wonder if there is an educational discount? the site is down right now....). It will be perfect for running and that is what I want it for. My MiniDisc actually skips and the software crashes my computer. Thanks Sony!

Nah, half-gig USB drives are being advertised for $50-ish all over the place now. I got an offer for a 512 MB Compact flash card for just $35 AR just yesterday. One gig units can be had for well under $100 now. This will seem expensive as the latest generation of flash rolls out in the next few months. By this time next year there should be flash based player competitive on price and capacity with the iPod Mini with advantages in size and battery life.

The iPod Shuffle is mainly for the kool-aid drinkers who've bought into the iLife stuff heavily. The only really interesting featuring in this thing is how it handles creating a playlist subset from your collection on your PC/Mac. It's going to take tha competition about a week to produce their own approach to this for existing hardware.

This is another example of Jobs flexing his Reality Distortion Field against his followers.

The Mini Mac and some of the new software like Pages are much more interesting items. The Mini Mac is especially of interest because there are some job opportunities I've had to pass up for lack of sufficient OS X experience. This machine would be the cheapest way to have a completely up to date Mac system with the least hassle. Just one good two week contract job would qualify the investment. Although the Mac is a tiny niche in the market it does still have a lock on professionals who pay very well for technical assistance. Plus, just like my array of consoles, I have the nerd urge to have a lot of different systems in computers.
