I hope this is not the case, but I have not heard ONE thing about them being linked.

I still have my Genesis, Shining Force, and Sonic. So I'm going to hold off and wait until the price drops more. A good deal at the Release Price but I will buy it at $20 or less.

I hope this sells well because then maybe Sega (or someone else) will put out a Saturn, Dreamcast, hell even a Sega CD collection would be cool. Although, Sega put out some really good and really rare games for the Saturn and a collection would be too awesome. I'd even pay the full $60 for a collection like that ( i.e. Panzer Dragoon Saga, Guardian Heroes, Shining Force III, etc.)

Agreed.

:)

It almost certainly just means that the game is "Live Aware", meaning that people can see that you're online playing it. That's all.

3 words: Third World War.
Does this have online play? If not, why does it have the live and psn logo on the box?
I know on the 360, you don't need to have online multiplayer for it to have the logo. Just some sort of online thing. I'm thinking it's probably some sort of leaderboard for the top scores for some of the arcade games. I'm not sure what's the policy to get the PSN logo though.

Anyways, for $25-30 it sounds very tempting. But I'm gonna hold back. I'm sure in a few months time, I'll see some drops or some kind of clearance on it.
I hope this is not the case, but I have not heard ONE thing about them being linked.
IIRC, the older SEGA compilations with the Sonic games that included Sonic 3 along with Sonic & Knuckles came with the link option. GameCube and PS2, releases (Sonic Mega Collection? or something similar) come to mind, calling it "lock-on mode" or something to that extent. The PC release had Sonic 3, S&K, and S3&K. So, it's very likely given past releases (I'll be really surprised if for some random reason they leave it out :bomb:)

But, yeah... I'm definitely buying this on release date. :)
I hope this is not the case, but I have not heard ONE thing about them being linked.
Neither have I, but then again the only thing I've heard about the games in this compilation is the list. And S&K add-ons don't really work well when listing games (it's not part of Sonic 3, but it's not it's own game either). My guess (hope) is that whoever wrote the press release couldn't figure out how to list it appropriately, and just felt that S&K by itself would be sufficient.

I'd be very surprised if Sega left it out though, seeing as this disc is basically their Genesis collection on Gametap, and S&K addons are there.

I believe the MSRP on this one is only $30, so $27.99 isn't really a deal, more of a decent price.

I'm really using newegg more often now....

Why did they omit Landstalker? Such a forgotten gem...

I should also note that Zaxxon and Congo Bongo are two of the hidden games on the disc, but it is unknown if there will be other unlockables classics.

Sega has said that they would love to make a Saturn compilation, however emulating the Saturn is near impossible, since the hardware was taped together. Also, the source material on a lot of major Saturn games was lost almost immediately after the games' release since, at the time, game preservation was not a big deal. It has been rumored that both Shining Force III and Panzer Dragoon Saga fall into this category. All this would mean that you'd be more likely to see a from-the-ground-up remake than a port, but it would cost a lot of money and be a huge risk. The number of people hungry for SF3 remake is far less than the number of people looking to buy a compilation.

Sucks tremendously. I loved the U.S. version of SFIII on the Saturn and always wanted to play the full game (Parts 1, 2, & 3 of SFIII).

I am admittedly a noob when it comes to programming so don't flame me too much but couldn't they use the original discs to somehow reverse-engineer the code. Also, IIRC, the original Panzer Dragoon was included on Panzer Dragoon Orta for the Xbox so it's not impossible to port Saturn games to other consoles.

Also, in regards to Shining Force III, I've heard that Shining Force Feather is coming for the DS (in Japan, for now) and it's the first SRPG Shining game since III. If that does well, and I can't imagine that it won't, maybe we will see a remake/port of SFIII or hell (dare to dream) all three scenarios from Shining Force III translated in English.

Gametap has a number of Saturn games up though, so I'd think if they can do it, Sega can. I'd LOVE to see more SegaCD and Saturn games rereleased! Those were both awesome systems that so many people overlooked.

Geez...Panzer Dragoon Saga and Dragon Force. Two of the finest RPGs ever IMO (or arguably an RTS, in Dragon Force's case). I'd LOVE to see those remade with modern PS3/360 quality graphics, and NONE of the gameplay messed up with 'additions' by people with 1/100th the talent of the people who originally made them. IMO the Saturn was worth owning just for either one of those. (Of course Working Designs' awesome translation of Dragon Force didn't hurt :( )

No way, Phantasy Star (Master System) is also included? This whole time, I felt the one glaring flaw (aside from not including Toe Jam & Earl) was not including PS I.

Freaking awesome. First time the 4 have ever been together in a (US, at least) compilation :)

This collection is fantastic!

Usually only arcade collections are released (Tecmo, Namco, Midway). A lot of those collections have one major problem. Once you get major time with some of games (and unlimited continues) you realize they have shallow gameplay.

Panzer Dragoon unlockable on the Xbox Panzer Dragoon Saga was the PC version. I have read many articles and listened to Sega interviews and yes emulation of Saturn games on other consoles is damn near impossible. Its even hard on the PC.
Now all we need is a Sega Saturn Collection so i can finally play Shining Force 3 :D
As mentioned before, some games got screwed over due to some crash that killed whatever SEGA had saved over, which means no more Panzer Dragoon Saga and some other titles released at that time.

Also there's the matter of emulation issues. Games like Sonic R and Panzer Dragoon were available on Panzer Dragoon Orta and Sonic Gems Collection because they were ports of the PC versions. GameTap has some basic games that aren't all too difficult to emulate at all.

Some employees of SEGA have said they want to bring these games back out but don't want to use ROMs or ISOs of the games and want to work with the direct source material.
The only thing I was wishing for was some Earthworm Jim and Toe Jam & Earl ... I think those were on Sega (possibly multi-platform). Let the nostalgia come! This is a great collection of games, though.
Earthworm Jim isn't a SEGA title. These compilations are exclusive to games made by SEGA and their studios.
Does this have online play? If not, why does it have the live and psn logo on the box?
Sonic 2 and 3 have racing in them. I know Sonic 2 has online racing for the game by itself. There's also leader boards.

Phil Theobald of the player one podcast worked on writing up loading screen blurbs. maybe I'll pickup a copy to support one of my favorite podcasts.

Damn, Now I want Toe Jam and Earl!

according to the wikipedia article,
[In regards to Sonic the Hedgehog games other than Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic Spinball, the three "lock-on" games (Knuckles in Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and "Blue Sphere") will not be included in this collection.] [10] (See comment #17 in the reference link)
such a shame that the sonic 3+knuckles game wont be in there.

You should still be able to get the Sonic collection if you want it though. Personally I want soooo many other Sega games that have never been rereleased.
that article is wrong. they are included.
You are the only person I've heard this from. On the other side is hundreds of sources saying that they are NOT included.
You are the only person I've heard this from. On the other side is hundreds of sources saying that they are NOT included.
Game list from Sega:
GAMES INCLUDE:

..........
· Shining in the Darkness
· Shining Force
· Shining Force 2
· Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
· Sonic 3D Blast
· Sonic and Knuckles
· Sonic Spinball
· Sonic the Hedgehog
· Sonic the Hedgehog 2
· Sonic the Hedgehog 3
· Streets of Rage
· Streets of Rage 2
· Streets of Rage 3
..........

Plus 9 UNLOCKABLE GAMES:

Isn't that the game in question. Sonic 3?

Source:

No the question was about whether or not you'd be able to play as Knuckles in Sonic 3, which you could by connecting the 2 carts together.
You can play as Knuckles only in Sonic and Knuckles. You cannot play as him in the other games.
Right. And the blue sphere game isnt in there either. Very strange since all of their other collections that had sonic 3 and sonic and knuckles also had the combined version of these games.

Are any of the games listed simple and built for two players? I have a little brother (seven YO) and my second controller is just collecting dust. Knowing how simple controls were back then, I think this might be a worthwhile purchase.

By simple I mean hit 'x' to attack, 'a' to jump and whatnot.

Aysion, these titles should be (local) multiplayer:

Multiplayer games:

Alien Storm
Alien Syndrome
Altered Beast
Bonanza Bros.
Columns
Congo Bongo (alternating)
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
Gain Ground (up to 3)
Golden Axe 1, 2, 3
Kid Chameleon
Shinobi (alternating)
Sonic 2, 3
Sonic Spinball
Streets of Rage 1, 2, 3
Zaxxon (alternating)

I'm mostly disappointed that this isn't going to have online multiplayer or even leaderboards.

Lastly all players with an Xbox LIVE membership/PlayStation Network account will appreciate that their side-scrolling skill translates to the online arena via the collection's extensive set of Xbox LIVE achievements/PSN trophies.
You're right, I totally appreciate that this game has achievements/trophies to take advantage of Live/PSN.

Sonic 2 and 3 should be fun multiplayer as your little brother could control Tails and help you out and basically if he dies, he just reappears constantly. In Sonic 3, you could even use him to lift you and fly you up to places.

I saw a crazy thing yesterday. My sister's friend's son is a month or two older than 2 years old and he was playing New Super Mario Bros and Super Mario World on the DS and was doing good. That's what I would have been like if they had portables like that back then! He went from drinking a bottle to playing Mario then back to the bottle when he finished a level.

At the age of 2 was when I played my first game and owned my first console; Super Mario Bros. and an NES. I learned to memorize how to play through the levels and learn patterns of the enemies and how to get to the goal. Sonic the Hedgehog was basically Super Mario Bros. with crack injected into the eyes for me. :D Since then, I've been playing games.

It's not as crazy as you think.
