Am I the only one baffled by everyone focusing primarily on the lack of lock-on when the compilation is $30 for more than 40 games?

Seriously. You guys are acting like as if you bought Virtual Console versions of Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles and thought lock-on would be available. Would it have been better? Sure. But it's not the biggest injustice in the world. You're getting a compilation that has ALL FOUR Phantasy Stars, two Shining Forces, all three Streets of Rages, both Vectorman games, all three Golden Axe games, Ristar, Dynamite Heady and the best Shinobi games, with PLENTY more to offer, all for $30.

You wanna talk about being jibbed? Think about the Americans who didn't get the Streets of Rage games in Sonic Gems Collection thanks to the ESRB. Or how ToeJam & Earl and its sequel were left out in the previous collection due to SEGA not giving a damn about them anymore. Hell, think about the people who bought Shenmue and Shenmue II. WE WILL NEVER GET OUR ENDING!
I'm gonna go with you on this. Already reading the rest of this thread. If you dont want it just dont buy it. The end. I remember the times when certain collections that were on gamecube, xbox, ps2 which always left out this game or that game. Its called capitalism. Its possible that either via licensing rights or just good ol' Greed that these games will be put into another collection to sucker us out of $30. Personally the last few days I've gotten an american xbox 360 and got a bunch of the emulated games because no way in hell will I pay for some of these in DLC format. I'd rather physically own the game. But with Tsukeno says theres so many gems in this thing that outweight the 1 or two things that are left out. 4 Phantasy Stars together!! GBA had a compilation that only had 3. Screwed. Fantasy Zone arcade, I have this on my PS2 (import). For people who wanna talk screwed go take a look at the japanese market. This is why my collection is predominantly Japanese. As far as Europe they are worse off than us.

Besides maybe they got Xport or took Xport's source coude to make all of this :p
One game I wish they had included is Shadow Run, my favorite genesis game ever.
I agree, that was a great game...I also wish it included Eternal Champions

Awesome suggestion on Shadowrun! That was such a great game too, and I've never gotten a chance to finish it.

It would probably be impossible too because of licensing issues-so many great games are probably like that.

does anyone know if this price will be good on friday the 13? the reason i ask is cause i have a sick wife and wont be able to jam to frys today!

man I just got this game at frys last night, and well.. I shouldn't have. I already had the sega genesis psp collection. Now I have two collections. And with achievements so easy to get, there's no carrot on the end of this stick for me to enjoy great games like shining force, and phantasy stars. This is the first time that I wish a game had harder achievements.
And with achievements so easy to get, there's no carrot on the end of this stick for me to enjoy great games like shining force, and phantasy stars.
How great can they be to you if it takes achievements to entice you to play them?

Just got this PMd at the West LA Best Buy no problem. They didn't have any out on the shelves, though, so I had to ask someone to get one for me. (which is always fun finding an employee at that store) They seemed to be in the overstock area over by the washing machines, if you're familiar with the store.
One game I wish they had included is Shadow Run, my favorite genesis game ever.
I thought that the SNES version was way superior IMHO.

Although yes, I agree that it would belong in a true 'best of' compilation.

“To shore up the development time necessary to get “Lock-On” to work in Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection, we would have had to drop all of the bonus games from the disc. Faced with an either/or scenario, we chose to retain our title lineup in its entirety.”

BULL fuckING SHIT.

And just to clarify, I wasn't speaking of all emulators that you pay for as having glitches. I was actually inferring that emulators you do pay for have glitches. Remember the Sonic 3 and Knuckles collection for the PC as well as the Genesis classics collection released for the Dreamcast? Those emulations had horrible sound and other glitches. Ironically, it's usually the emulators you pay for that have perfect or near perfect free versions.

Waaahhh I didn't get what I wanted waaahhhh they gave me a great collection of some great classic SEGA games but I only wanted this one waaaahhh I don't care if its supper fun and nostalgic I want Sonic 3 +Knuckles and Sonic 2+Knuckles and I want a unicorn waaaahhhh

Sorry I wanted to join in on the whining that the thread has become. I am enjoying this great collection. Sure it doesn't have one thing. So fucking don't buy it. Stop whining its very pathetic

Let me guess. You didn't grow up with these games, right?
$30.00 / 48 games = $0.63 per game = please stop crying about whats not in and enjoy what is.
That might be the cost per game.. but are you really going to play every game? Think about it... think about opportunity cost. Is it worth it to you?

I think some of you guys would pay $25 to have Sega shit in your mouths.
Let me guess. You didn't grow up with these games, right?
Nope 25 yrs old. I grew up with this and the NES/SNES. Hell some of the best memories of my childhood were spent around the system. Where my autistic younger brother and I would play for hours. He unfortunatly passed away a few years ago so those memories are very speical.

So if it means so much to you then you should go buy the game and the system. I know that I have went out to find a Sega and a SNES and the games that were so speical to me. I am sure that you could do the same. I promise so enjoy the game for what it is and really good collection of games that Sega made. Its missing one or two that people would have loved to see in the game but its not, no need to whine

EDIT: A quick look at ebay and I found several so if you really want it go out and get it.

Look.. you guys have bad excuses. Go out and buy the system? Are you for real? I barely have enough room, time, energy, space, money for 1 system, let alone multiple. If I were to get another system, it would probably be a Wii or PS3, not some piece of shit Genesis that would look absolutely ridiculous on my TV with composite cables. Do they even use composite? Maybe it's just RF?

I wanted S3&K and Sonic CD in 720p. I wasn't expecting Sonic CD cuz I know Sega compilations are usually bullshit. But come on... they left the best Sonic game out! Shit makes no sense!

Excuses me while I clear my throat for this:

Waaah and Poor you

Man I thought with all the bumps this thread was getting, there were some other great deals out there for this game. Now that I opened the thread, guess not....

It is a fantastic compilation and I think it's the best one released, at least in some time. But it's a glaring flaw, and the developers gave us a bullshit lie. People would be less upset if Sega considered the distinct possibility that their fans aren't fucking morons and could see through a statement like that. Calm down, internet tough guy!
Excuses me while I clear my throat for this:

Are you really that dense that you don't get it? It's not about me.. it's about Sega fans, specifically Sonic fans. Look at Capcom. That's a company that has done a complete 180 in regards to fan appreciation. Look at what they've released recently:

 • SF: Remix (with a cool fan kit)
 • Mega Man 9 (with a cooler fan kit)
 • SFIV (with a sweet CE and nice arcade sticks/pads)
Now look at Sega. What have they done? Sonic Unleashed? You can't call yourself a true Sonic fan if you buy this game.. otherwise you're just giving Sega 30 more reasons to continue half-assing everything.

I never got rid of mine! My Game Gear with Sonic 2 on Christmas when I was 8 years old. My Genesis 2 from Christmas when I was 10 years old, the Sonic 2 cart I got on that same Christmas, the 6-Pak cart that has Sonic 1 that I got in the beginning of the summer when I was 10, the former rental Sonic and Knuckles I got when I was 12, and the Sonic 3 I got when I was 13 (put off buying that because I played my cousin's copy all the time). They're all the originals!

Not to mention I grew up watching the cartoons, playing the rusty-nail-through-the-dick difficult Sonic 2 Game Gear version, eating the Sonic pasta, pretend playing Sonic during recess (I was Knuckles), drawing a Game Gear in a little notebook I had in school so I could pretend I was playing it during class, keeping my parents away from their TV so I could play Sonic 2 all Christmas break long, the first time I beat Sonic 2, and wearing Sonic clothes! I lived, breathed, ate, drank, slept, and bled 90s Sonic when I was younger!

I was there for all the crazy-ass lock-on rumors, too. I heard that if you linked your Genesis to a 32X, to a Game Genie, to a Sonic and Knuckles cart, to a Lion King cart, you could play as Simba in Sonic and Knuckles levels! That's part of the reason why lock-on is so legendary to myself and so many people. The mere fact that you could link two games together was mind-blowing.

Preach on brotha.. tell these mofos what it's like to have been a Sega/Sonic kid. :]
Preach on brotha.. tell these mofos what it's like to have been a Sega/Sonic kid. :]
Thanks, PhrostByte. Lock-on wasn't just some throwaway thing to us kids back then. It changed so many things. From crazy Lion King rumors to speculations about what games would have lock-on technology next (my personal favorite speculation was some sort of Mortal Kombat lock-on feature), it was a major part of the golden age of the Sonic mythos. Just discarding the lock-on feature and blatantly and disgustingly lying about it is just a big middle finger to the people who cared.

Right.. we grew up on this shit. My buddy has a 32X.. we swore that if we ever got his 32X near another 32X, we would try to mate them and possibly make a 64X. We also thought maybe Knuckles Chaotix would work with Sonic & Knuckles for double Knuckles.. it didn't work. :(

Imagine how sweet it would be to play as Knuckles in Sonic CD. :D:D:D

That was the sort of shit I grew up on! It was such a good time to be a kid.

That's why I'm really disappointed with the generation of CAGs that are posting shit like "suck it up". They just don't get it.. either:

 • they're not real Sonic fans
 • or they don't care that they're getting screwed
 • or they don't realize that they're getting screwed
Has to be one of the three.

Oh don't give me that shit.

I have Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles still for my Genesis. I have Sonic Jam. I have Sonic Mega Collection AND Mega Collection Plus (for the extras not in the GameCube version).

Do you know why it doesn't bother me that the lock-on isn't in SUGC? Because I already have the damn game in four different formats.

Don't try pulling any of that BS that we're getting screwed or not real Sonic fans. The compilation has several games that cost quite a bit on eBay and cost more buying them on the Virtual Console. Yet this compilation is $30.

Also, why are we forgetting this is a collection of Genesis games? THIS IS NOT A SONIC COLLECTION. You feel you're getting screwed? Fine. Go buy Sonic Mega Collection. It's around $10 and it's available on the GameCube, PS2 and Xbox.

I agree 100%.

Yeah well you make a good point. I forgot to include people who already have another version of the game, which I don't. I already mentioned why I'm not getting Sonic Mega Collection earlier in the thread. This thread is about this game, not an old XBox one.

I think it should certainly get split and moved or merged with one of the other threads. This is a very worthwhile discussion about Sonic itself.

And don't give me that "It's a Genesis collection" bullcrap. That's just a cop-out.

IGN gave it a 9.0 out of 10! BTW, I got it because it's a GENESIS collection, not a SONIC collection. There's plenty of great games on this disc to make it worth while.

Hate to pull this one out of the old internet archives, but you can't spell ignorant without IGN. They're probably as clueless as those SEGA executives who turned down Streets of Rage 4 because they never heard of the first three games.

EDIT: And both the PS3 and 360 IGN reviews say nothing about Sonic 3 and Knuckles! What a joke!

Looks like 2 other sites gave it an 8 which is still worth it. And it comes with sonic 1, 2, 3, and knuckles, not to mention 3d blast and spinball....COME ON! If you want to bitch about a game not on there, how about Toejam and Earl? Shadowrun? Castle of Illusion? You know what who gives a flying fuck anymore. I guess it doesn't have every single game on the Genesis so it must not be worth it...only whoever owns it already says it is. They must be wrong.

As tempting as this is, I just can't spend the 30 bones on a bunch of Genesis games I already have on my PC and rarely play. Now if they had included online play with some of these then maybe, but I gotta say no dice on this rehashed collection as it is.

I don't give a damn about the ratings some rinky-dink websites or some rinky-dink magazines give. The omission of lock-on is beyond a disgrace, and lying to the public makes it even worse.

Dual layer DVDs have about 9 gigs of space. Not only could they fit every Sega-produced Genesis ROM on there, but also: 32x, SMS, arcade, and much much more.

Maybe, but we all know THAT would never happen. Still, it would be pretty cool.

Well... not complete crap. There's still some good in Sega. It resides deep within... the spark in a small boy's eye, the flutter of a girl's heart! It's rare, but when it's there... baby, it's good!

Valkyria Chronices! :)
Could not be put any better! SEGA is still a great company at its core. The management and marketing divisions have let the company down over the years however.

SEGA is also fighting uphill against a biased gaming media whom for whatever reason has a vendetta against them. All some other companies have to do is slap their mascot on a game and it has 9.0 rating automatically no matter how bad it is.

I do believe one reason for this is SEGA has never been in a position to strong arm the gaming media. When Nintendo and Capcom call saying, "You aren't getting the cover for our next game and we are pulling advertising, because you scored a certain game low." That gaming magazine editors immediately go into kiss butt mode. Nintendo and Capcom have several properties that can get magazines off shelves. The only property SEGA has that can sell units is Sonic. Not much bargaining power when you only have one chip on the table. Over the years this type of bias has created a very thick cloud over any game SEGA releases no matter how good. (See Valkyria Chronices sales)

Think about this...

Panzer Dragoon Saga - I know no one who has played this game who doesn't think it is the best game ever. But, look at the reviews when it was "released". Even when given a good rating or award it always had a condescending tone (uhhhmmmm EGM) that it's a solid game but it's SEGA and the Saturn is all but dead. If it was not for hardcore fans and eBay this game would not have the respect it does today. Even then it still gets shafted. I'm sorry but you cannot have a respectable best games ever list and not have this game in the top 25. But, some how even today it still happens. This is no knock against Final Fantasy 7. But, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Persona, and Final Fantasy 7 were all released around the same time. It is a shame that Final Fantasy 7 the worse of the three in my humble opinion is the only one people remember.

Ecco the Dolphin Defender of the Future - One of the most underrated games ever. Some reviews of the initial Dreamcast release by smaller sites called it one of the best adventure games ever. It is also one of the scariest games ever. Before you dismiss this, Giant Eels and Great White Sharks creeping up on you in the deep sea will scare the best of you. The game got decent reviews but they should have been much better.

We would need a separate thread for all of SEGA's underrated games. Suffice it to say the gaming media has done SEGA and more importantly gamers a great disservice.

As for buying this collection. As much as I enjoy Sonic. You can remove the Sonic Games completely and this collection is still worth $30.

You guys need to give SEGA more credit here. Admittedly, yes they should have included the lock on feature with Sonic & Knuckles. However, Sonic & Knuckles without the lock-on is a great game nonetheless, especially when you factor in it's in 720p. At least to me the lock on feature was more like icing on the cake. Check out some other companies compilations and stack them up against what SEGA has done. There are several other companies putting out significantly worse (lazy & milking the cow) compilations to say the least.

If there is any viable thing to be angry about it's the lack of inclusion of Sonic CD, Sonic Arcade, and the Eternal Champions series.

Anyone who doesn't buy this collection because of Sonic & Knuckles is missing the forest for the tree.

To preempt anyone trying to classify me as a fanboy. NES, Super NES, N64, TG16 etc. I cut many lawns so I could own them all. I follow good games not systems. Hence why I am passionate about this. Few things are disheartening as seeing a good game get unfair reviews. And boy did that happen a lot back in the day.
I don't give a damn about the ratings some rinky-dink websites or some rinky-dink magazines give. The omission of lock-on is beyond a disgrace, and lying to the public makes it even worse.
Far be it from me to say this on a forum that I browse so that I can sometimes save five dollars off of things that I play on my TV, but please reevaluate your life's priorities immediately.

This message also goes to anyone who doesn't understand why this collection doesn't magically contain every single game ever made.

Holy balls you guys love to argue !!!

I bought the game so im thinking about selling my systems and 100 games or so .
Anyone down for a Gunstar Heroes complete in spiffy condition .

From the posts I've read in here and the reasoning behind their posts, I've come to the conclusion that the people bitching and moaning about no Sonic and Knuckles lock-on blah blah blah are some of the biggest nerds alive. Wow.

Haha ... it is kind of a strange that a game which is fundamentally based on the gimmick of attaching an additional cartridge to the original game in order to place a second-rate red echidna into the game, who has yet another gimmick of being able to climb through levels that aren't really all that more exciting due to this new "feature," strikes the heart of so many "hardcore" Sonic fans. Which leads one to wonder why, if they were so passionate about that ... single ... game ... they don't already own it on one of the MANY other re-releases of JUST sonic games.

SEGA Genesis was my first console, Sonic the Hedgehog was my very first game as a kid ... but I would have assumed that most folks who were really passionate about that particular game would already own it, either via released collection or ROM. Some of you may not remember, but there was a period in the late 90's where ROMS were actually flying around all over the place because everyone assumed Nintendo and Sega's old products were dead and long gone. You could go to sites and just get these games without any fear of a legal department coming to get you. Of course, now that they seem to be worth "$5 to $10" a pop, this collection seems like a great value ... I'm not sure I fully buy that ... but who knows, perhaps nostalgia plus a sense of having the best in one easy to access collection will get the best of me ... but I'll be covered on the Knuckles department either way ;-) ...

Ordered this from Amazon about a week ago. Got an email on Wed saying it had already shipped. Can't wait, looks like a phenomenal collection.
