I've owned a PS3 since November 30th, and since then, over 50% of the Blu-Ray discs I have rented from Netflix have not worked. The same thing happens every time- I pop the disc in, and it just keeps making the same noise over and over again: *disc reading noise* *disc reading noise* *GRIND*. The things never load. The other half, however, work fine.

It really pisses me off. I paid $300 for this thing, and since all but maybe 8 of the games worth playing are also available on the 360, one of the primary reasons I bought it was to watch Blu-Rays. What's the deal?

Sounds like there is something wrong with your PS3 then. I've watched a ton of Blu-Rays and have never once had a problem with them.

It's cause HD-DVD is so much better and will win the format war!!!

On a serious note, it might be something you may want to contact Sony about, it should be under warranty still.

Yeah, Matt. You either need to contact Sony or Netflix. I would hope that these discs aren't massively scratched since it's so hard to scratch a blu ray, but if they're doing something to buff them, they need to be told to stop. Is it only Netflix blu rays it happens with? Have you ever had the problem with store bought blus?

If yes, I'd be calling Sony right away. Personally, I've never had a blu ray not work. As long as it's still under warranty, might as well have it checked out before they want to charge you $100 to fix it.

Yeah man, I have watched over 150 blu-rays on my ps3 at this point, over 100 from netflixed, never once has one not worked.

Is the firmware updated? I guess it has to be... then it must be the Ps3 I would think.

That's the way mine started acting before it quit playing Blurays [movies & games] completely .

Be happy if it's still under warranty but backup your saves ,I hear you don't get your same PS3 back .

Just to add to the chorus, I've had my PS3 for nearly two years now, and I've watched a ton of blu-rays on it, both ones that I own and ones that I rented from Netflix. I've never had any problems with one not playing.

It definitely sounds like the problem is with your PS3.
I have yet to have a problem with any of my blu-ray's or games...definitely call up Sony about this.
Same here, I've watched about 20 different Blu-ray's.

The only blu ray I've ever had a problem with was Curious case of Benjamin button coincidentally from Netflix and just happened yesterday but upon looking at the disc it had a small crack in it. Other than that I've never had a blu ray not work you should contact Sony.

i hope u still have the warranty for that thing man cuz it sound like it wants to die. I got mine just before the PS3 slims came out and never have had any problems playing blu's even those that are sorta jacked up that I've got from netflix.

Matt are there any rental stores near you that rent Blu-Rays? Try that or maybe buy one you would like and see if there's an issue there.

Also keep in mind your 1-year warranty period so if this is still an issue in Oct. then I would contact Sony about getting a free warranty repair, just make sure you have your original receipt (Sony requires a copy of your receipt or they charge you for the repair.)

I have exactly 100 blu-rays discs. I play the majority of them on my computer but I've only ran in to two discs that gave me problems. Fight Club and Wolverine. Both played fine once I popped them in to my PS3 though.

So with that said I'm going to agree with the other posters and say that you might have a hardware issue or just a streak of bad luck concerning bum rental discs.

To echo everyone else, I have a launch 20GB and have watched a lot of Netflix BDs, never had a problem. Add to that that all PS3 discs are on BDs and its gotta be your system, not the discs, unless they're obviously, visibly damaged.

Once about every 10 times I go to play a blu-ray it says disc unreadable. I eject it and put it right back in and works fine.

Yes, I have updated the firmware. The discs have all been in flawless or near flawless condition. The reason I didn't think it was the drive is because every game I own works fine, and when a Blu-Ray I have rented hasn't worked (like last night) I've been able to pop in one that I own and it's worked fine. But this problem has been occurring since December, right after I bought the system.

I'm not sure if I still have the receipt or not, sadly. Would I even need a receipt to prove that it's under warranty, given that the slim wasn't even released until last August? If I do need a new system, how would I go about backing up my game saves?

Im almost certain receipt is needed or Sony will charge you for any repairs.

I think when a system is purchased the serial # gets activated relative to the date of purchase via the UPC. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Given that the Slim has been around 6 months it would seem rather absurd of them to deny you the 1 year warranty without a receipt. I know in the past people have been required to have proof of purchase for service, though, based on things I've read on various forums. Rather shady of them if you ask me, since that's a pretty non-standard policy for practically every other consumer electronics. It's probably to make sure they make money servicing machines which were bought 2nd-hand, since they didn't make any money on the purchase of that system and they're already losing money on each system sold.

You NEED the receipt to get in warranty service for the PS3. It's not a question of if. YOU NEED THE RECEIPT!!

If you paid with a credit card for the slim, you can possibly go back to the retailer you bought it from and have them print you up a copy of it.

In my case, I bought my slim from Gamestop after trading in my fat model 40gb in August. Unfortunately, I also traded in about 15-16 games on the same receipt and the receipt is now fading(something that didn't happen AT ALL with the receipt from FYE for my 40gb).

So if I need warranty service from Sony, I may have to call up Gamestop corporate and have them forward the info regarding date purchased, serial # and so on to Sony. Plus, the damned receipt takes 2 photocopies to actually fully copy. It's THAT damned long.

good luck sounds like a bad system.

Mine is fine on every one I tried.

Gotta love the receipts that do that to you, its almost like its on purpose by the retailer.

I would photocopy that receipt now, so you have a good scan of it while it was still readable. Why wait for it to fade and count on Gamestop to send you a dup? Make one now.

That's why I said it took 2 photocopies to get the full receipt. I tried it already and the photocopies are as faded as the original receipt.

I've never had an issue with Blurays on my PS3 (launch Slim)

Unless you count, downloading and installing updates and waiting thru 15 minutes of semi-unskipable warning, ads, and trailers before I can get to the menu to try and start the movie as an 'issue'.

Well, shit. I got my system back 2 weeks ago, right before I left for Phoenix. I just tried to watch a Blu-ray on it last night, for the first time since I got it repaired. Shit doesn't work. Thanks a fucking lot, Sony.

I know people here will disapprove, but I guess my only option is to buy a new system, put the old one in the box, and then return that.

Beyond the moral issues with doing that, which I won't bother to lecture you on because it seems you're already aware of them and you have made your decision . . . The serial number of the system is printed on both the box and the unit, so you'll need to have the box from the original one. Also, most stores these days keep track of the serial number of the system that they sell to you on your receipt, so they could see if the serial number of the one you are returning is different than the one you bought. You may get lucky and get a clueless customer service person who doesn't know the difference, but there's also a good chance you'll get caught.

Hate to say it, but your best bet is really to call Sony again and tell them that their repair didn't work, and get them to redo it.

Nah, I checked the receipt and the box and there's no link.

I am not sending it back to Sony again. I had the system for 2 months before it started screwing up, and was without it for 3 weeks when I sent it in, clearly marking on the sheet, for the problem: "Will not read or play Blu-ray movies". They should have fixed it the first time.

Yeah, all my games work, as do the 2 Blu-rays I own- Lost season 5 and I Am Legend. However, 80% of the movies I rent from Netflix do not work. I've never had a regular DVD from Netflix not work.

You realize that these things are checked and validated via serial numbers, right? Moral issues aside, I doubt you'll get away with that, and even if you do, that's a really shitty thing to do. I've had customers try to pull this stuff all day long and then they're like "oops, my mistake" like they weren't just trying to cheat the company out of money.

Yup that switcheroo scam doesn't work, serials are there for a reason.

Does Sony not have a system where they can tell when a system was bought through the serial number? Nintendo and Microsoft both do, I never needed a receipt when I used warranties for them. Just call or look online if they have any repair stuff.

Sony has three methods of proving a PS3/PSP purchase, either receipt, the canceled check (or whatever it was exactly), or CC bill showing the PS3/PSP purchase (with CC number and stuff covered).
Nah, I checked the receipt and the box and there's no link.

Where did you buy it from? I'd be shocked if there wasn't a barcode on the receipt, and that's where the serial number information will be.

So you sent back your PS3 and got the exact same one back? Or did you get another one back with the same issues?

well i can vouch for no serial being tied to the receipt at Best buy . bought the black friday bundle online in store pick up. and no indication of serial at all.

however my ps3 purchased at walmart in 08 was tied to the receipt

Best Buy has a fairly sophisticated point-of-sale system that is geared specifically toward electronics purchases, where serial numbers are common. Even if you don't see the serial number printed directly on the receipt, chances are that it's in their computer when they scan the barcode on the receipt to bring up the information on the sale.

Just to make sure it's not user error.....your putting the disc in shiny side face down, correct?

(Just thought I'd be an ass and ask a super obvious question)

Discussions of return fraud aren't allowed. The system is under warranty and needs to be handled through Sony's repair channels.
try to find someone else with a PS3 and see if the discs work on theirs. It sounds like the system
I know it's the system. That's why I sent it to Sony for repairs. They did NOT fix it.

AND to top it all off, when I try to send a service request to the PS3 web site, it says my serial number is not valid. What the fuck? I copied it directly off the back of my system, and I've used it before.

fuck Sony. I'm just going to get rid of the system. This is just inexcusable.

What I wonder is do some people just have bad luck, or little ones that feed their PS3's cheerio's and canned spaghetti while they're at work during the day, that their systems never seem to work.

Guess I just don't abuse / overuse my systems. Not saying you did anything OP, but X =/= Y if some thing's work and others do not.

My hypothesis, is that Netflix likes to buff their blurays (for fingerprints, dirt, scratches) which might cause you a problem with reading them, just a thought and all...

I thought about that, but I know otehrs who have received countless Blu-rays from netflix and they have all worked.

As for how I treat my system, I take care of all my stuff very well and the system is in brand new condition, save for a thin layer of dust on the top. So that's not it.
