Group Buys - Updated 05/20

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales
Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Yeah, I haven't touched a Magic card in over 10 years, but i am so tempted to check out Planeswalkers 2012.... decisions decisions

I'm thinking about buying Fallout: New Vegas while it's on sale at D2D, and then registering on Steam. But I've got a question. Can you specify which directory the game installs into when you download/install it through Steam? I never paid attention before since it usually doesn't matter, but I know Bethesda games typically, for Windows Vista/7, are suggested to be installed outside the Program Files folder it would normally go into.

If I can't specify the path, anyone have any experience in how easy/difficult it is to get mods or the mod manager to work with the Steam copy? Or any other Steam version of a Bethesda game?

Thanks!

You cannot change where Steam games are installed. They are in the 32-bit "program files" folder of your C drive, nested in Steam folders.

However, there is a good mod community for Bethesda games, and these games are Steam-friendly, as far as mods go. Even older games like Oblivion were quickly retrofitted to be mod-friendly when they got a Steam release.

You will find all the information you need for modding Fallout 3 and NV in stickied threads their Steam forum. That's also a great place to ask questions... as far as modding communities go, Steam users are pretty helpful.

Pretty sure you can but you have to work for it

Where games install depends entirely on where you installed Steam. I didn't load Steam under Program Files; I gave it its own root directory, so that's where my games install.

Aah - you are right, sir. I stand corrected. When you install the Steam client, it *does* give you an option of where to install it.

I feel that this would be a good time to remind people, if you wish to change where Steam is installed, that if you uninstall Steam, all of your Steam games will uninstall too! You have to re-download them. I learned this the hard way a few months ago when trying to troubleshoot something on my computer. Thought I could uninstall Steam, and reinstall it in the same spot, and all my games would survive intact. Not so. Ouch. Lesson learned.

Protip: You can back up your game(s) thusly, friends:

 1. Open the Steam client, then click on Library
 2. Right-click on any game on the left and select "Backup Game Files".
 3. Select one or more games to back up. Click on Next.
 4. Choose where you want the backup files. Click on Next.
 5. Give a name to your backup (ideally the game's name! ;D) then a file size (for backing up to CD, DVD or custom size). Click on Next and you're set!
Hope that helps!

If you're needing to just change the Steam install folder, just move it. The program is smart enough to make the adjustments and tell everything where to find everything, which is nice. Last I heard (which is a while ago; I haven't tried it a while), the Steam's inherent backup was kinda slow and clunky, but it may have changed by now, considering the length of time that's passed since I last tried (read: years).

You can also use folder junctioning commands to put the steamapps folder on another hard drive, which is handy if you want to put a few games on an SSD (or vice versa, where my Steam folder is on the SSD but the steamapps is on a separate drive) for space concerns. I like having games I never play installed...just in case. :D
Indie packs for me. Capsized must not be selling very well :(
it looks good to me, id buy the pack if i didnt own most of it.

I own FEAR 1 on 360 and I've also played FEAR 2, but I might just grab that collection to play this weekend to get hyped up for FEAR 3 on tuesday!
No one is talking about Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012. Guess everyone is getting it on XBLA. I would if my husband didn't prefer Steam over the 360.
I got it on Steam and PS3 (PSN has it on sale for $7.99 for PS+ members).

Damn I couldn't pass up easy access to both FEAR games for $10 (even though I have both games on Xbox 360 lol) and all the expansion packs/dlc.

MTG 2012 is way worth it if you're still into Magic at all. Hell of a value for $10.

Despite the bugs, I put 48 hours into the first one released last year on Steam...since I pre-ordered I got a foil card and two half decks for free.

WotC did the same thing with 2012...I have to go pick up my card later today actually. Not that I still play the physical game anymore...but pre-order bonus is pre-order bonus...

Beat Hazard Ultra came out yesterday. It's 10% off for the next week. I know .50 isn't much savings, but I love Beat Hazard so that was a day 1 purchase for me.

As an alternative to what the others said, you CAN use Junctions and Links inside Windows Vista/7 (and maybe XP, never did it there) to have a directory seem to be in one place and really be in another. If this sounds exotic, it is because MS never really pushed the tech even though they included it in their newer products.

Google "Steammover" or "Steamtool," either of which will work, though I think Steammover works better. These are basically front ends to automated versions of MoveAndLink which will automatically move the folder to another directory where you want to store more Steam games and then link the directory where Steam thinks it is and where the Link actually should point. Unlike a shortcut, if you delete the Link, you delete the real thing. In every way, it's treated like the real thing except it doesn't take up the space.

Played Alliance of Valiant Arms for about half an hour, and it seemed quite enjoyable.

One of my buddies who doesn't play many video games, and doesn't have a great computer has been asking me lately to find him a shooter to play cheap from steam. I guess free will do, and now I will be able to play it with him.

Portal 2 DLC Released!

You'll just need a copy of Portal 2 and ....oh my.

Valve, you got physical product in mah Steam. I guess we'll have to wait a little bit longer.

P.S. If anyone hoped that the weekend bundle included 75% off just S&S HD, I've got one copy.
Daily Deal - Left 4 Dead 2 66% off!
What are the chances this shows up again during the summer sale bundled with other Valve games at a cheaper price? I've been waiting for this one, but I didn't think it would show up until the Summer Sale. :whistle2:?

Unlikely lower than $5, but if you're really worried about the money you could save, they'll probably put it on sale then anyway.

I think it has a pretty good chance, as a matter of fact. I believe it was featured in almost every major sales events. Granted, this was before the invention of the daily deals, so there is a slimmmm chance that it might not pop up again so soon in the, much anticipated (and, hopefully, up-coming), summer sales event.

However, I would imagine the most it would go on sale for is about 75%. It has hit that point before (http://www.steamprices.com/us/app/550/left-4-dead-2 ;Thanksgiving sale + Christmas sales events), but if you're fine with not saving an extra $1.80 by playing with chances, then I would say grab it today. :bouncy:

Indie Variety Pack looks pretty awesome for $10... If you don't own any of these games, pick it up :D The other Indie Pack looks pretty dull...

I already own Sword and Soldiers HD and Machinarium... I'm on the fence. $10 for 3 games... I have had my eye on A.R.E.S. for a while, and Capsized looks great too. Not sure I'd play much of Atom Zombie Smasher, although it does look like fun for what what it is. I might hold off and see what the summer sale brings.

Any opinions?

Only on Origin and even that was only for a limited time (expired last night) if you didn't pre-order it. I have a physical copy of the original but I wouldn't have minded getting the HD version. I hope it comes back.

It does. I am just a huge dork who is apparently blind or oblivious to wherever this was announced. =|

Strangely enough, peeps commenting on the Steam facebook page are sounding like it's still included. I'm truly hoping so, since I really did love the hell out of that game. Will report back if i find anything and haven't been beaten to the punch.

EDIT - And it appears to be exactly like Mike UFC said. Well freaking suck. :C Here's to hoping EA pulls their heads out of their asses. They could make easy money by making that available to the masses as a separate purchase, even.

Ended up picking up Duel of the Planeswalkers. I should have pre-ordered it to get the two half decks, because a girl I work with plays and she is getting me into it, but I figured I can test the game version and if I like it enough then I can start wasting tons of cash on the cards. From what I've seen, the reviews are good, but anybody here who has it, how do you feel about it?

i think ill go ahead and buy left 4 dead 2, add that to the list of games that i can't play right now, now only need a gpu and some ddr3 ram

I just picked it up too. I didnt play the original version, but I am really enjoying 2012! I wish I had preordered it too, considering that was about 24 hours ago.

What was the preorder bonus anyways?

I've played about 4 hours so far of 2012...I can say it's better than the first one (that I put 48 hours into) already :D

Pre-order bonus was some digital TF2 stuff, but the real bonus is a Frost Titan Foil from a MTG retailer after you print out a voucher.

Last time I got a foil Nissa Rivane with my choice of two half decks (pick your favorite colors, I did black/green).

Not sure if I'll get the two free half decks again, but I have printed out the voucher...I'll probably go claim it next week if it's not too early (as in the stores received promo stuff).
