Group Buys - Updated 05/20

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales
Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Giant Bomb has a list but I'm not sure how comprehensive it is and you can only view 10 games per page.
I've never watched these summer sales before so can someone please let me know if I'm understanding this correctly:

From now to the end of the sale, there is a generic "percent off" on all the stuff listed
The list of daily games are even cheaper than the "all-sale-long price"

Is there a certain time to pull the trigger on a given game? Wait until the last day of the sale to see if it hits a daily? What is the best way to go about this thing?
The general consensus seems to be wait until the last day to make sure the games you want aren't cheaper as a daily deal. Unless a game is so insanely cheap that you think it is a pricing mistake then you should buy it before it gets fixed.
I'm on the fence about Back to the Future. I know it's only 12 bucks, but the CAG in me thinks it'll go lower.

Someone, quick, sell me on this game. lol
Just about all Telltale games can be had for $5 or less if you are patient and keep an eye out on the boards or during steam and Telltale sales.

So is it worth $7.50 to have it now? If yes ->>>Buy, If no ->>> No Buy

Seems like a ton of games are on sale that arent shown as "Today's deal"

Looking at "most purchased" I see some amazing stuff, will that be all month long?

No, the sale is only for 10 more days

Well I spent my "hard earned" (lol) 3 gold tickets on the only full game available in the prize pool, Alien Breed 2. It is made by Team 17, the same guys behind Worms.

I was expecting a pretty terrible game, but I played it for about half an hour last night and actually had a decent time. At first a lot of button pressing and switch pulling, but once the enemies started piling up, the game actually got quite fun. Graphics are decent too thanks to the Unreal 3 engine.

I can give this game my recommendation for the paltry price of 3 gold tickets ;)

It's Recettear. Recettear.

:grouphug:
Just quoting this so those of you familiar with RollingSkull's game opinions will know this means Borderlands is totally awesome when played with friends, and not bad solo.
It's not bad. . .for a week. Then you beat it and never play it again. Unless they changed how online co-op worked, then the GameSpy lobby system was also complete shit. The host literally had to open up their computer to attack by dropping their firewall and opening all ports. And sadly that's all I really remember about the game. It was that forgettable.

Oh and the hacked guns. That was hilarious for griefing people with open games.

Except Borderlands was a pretty mediocre game all around.

"totally awesome" is not how I would describe Borderlands and I've beaten it twice both on co-op and on single.
Rift is only 19.99, does it come with a free month?
"Notice: Access to the full RIFT game via downloadable client, and one (1) month subscription included for new accounts."

Looks like it. Good find, need to tell my brother about this one.

I was thinking about getting this but people were saying they got it in a 5 game for $5 pack. Which makes me figure I should wait for a deal like that to pop up with it.

Me thinks you'll be waiting a long time for that to happen again. It sold like hotcakes in that pack (as most people valued it at the $5 price point for that game alone). The developer wised up to it and I highly doubt you'll ever see it in a pack like that again (I hope I'm wrong for your sake) - I got it in the pack last sale, and I'd say $5 is a great value.

Watched some Recettear gameplay on YouTube and it did not look fun. Only thing I picked up so far is Lead & Gold. Bring on today's deals!

The game does have multiple difficulty, much like the Diablo series. Stronger enemies and better guns. Bigger is always better. What you stated were pre-patched Borderlands. It was pretty horrible since you had to open your ports so people can join your public game. However, it has since been fixed, and the online community is still quite healthy. But the game is definitely more fun when played with a few buddies.

As for the hacked guns, if I remember correctly, they also fixed that, too. I think the game does a check on your weapons now and remove them if they detect that it's a hacked. Not too sure on this, but I do remember them mentioning on a patch note they did something about this.

That was more of a fluke. A few days later, they decided to sell Recettear separately for $5 as a daily deal (if my memory serves me right). Not to burst your bubble, but I don't expect it to be a part of any indie pack anytime soon.

NP, I just bought it myself. I figure 20 bucks for a month is good, even if I dont get into it, theres a ton of games I buy at full price and dont get a month of enjoyment out of
a question. I have oblivion goty as a hard copy, but i'm considering the deluxe edition for the dlc. Any play the dlc, is it any good? if it is, to get the dlc, I need the deluxe copy, as I don't believe there are any other sanctioned methods of getting dlc these days either.

any advice?
The official DLC is good, yes, but not critical if you have the GOTY edition. i played through the main quest and 80 hours of side quests just using Frostcrag Spire, the wizard's tower. and honestly, I didn't use it much, just installed it and kept some things there. Once i'd finished the Wizard's guild quests, it was easier to keep stuff in my room in the academy, since you're always in the Imperial City all the time anyway.

If you're using mods at all, you can get mods at tesnexus.com that mimic what the best DLC do. A wizard's lair, a fighter's stronghold, a thieves' den, etc. They're really good, maybe even better. But they're not the official stuff.
What's the difference between the free version and the $10 version that's on the developer's website?
It was freeware up to v5.3. After that, they started adding more customization and preloaded profiles for various models. I've only used the free version, so there may be even more cool features in the paid version I'm unaware of.

If you have a lot of different PC controllers & configurations, the $10 is probably well worth it. But if you only use a 360, PS3, or similar controller, or don't mind manually customizing everything yourself, the free v5.3 gets the job done.

ps. I think the paid version also gives arcade / M.A.M.E. builders some helpful tools.
I am definitely buying titans quest before the end as I absolutely love that game. I might also get the Serious Sam games, that's as close to bullet hell as you can get with a fps. Just going to wait and see if I get sales for them.
I loved Titan Quest. It's a great game. If you don't see a good sale on Steam, it is always priced great at Amazon - it's about $8 right now for the Gold edition (with the expansion pack). It's always under $10 there, and free shipping.

Also - if you get TQ, seek out the fan patch. I think the current one is 1.17a. It fixes a lot of bugs that were left in the game after the developers were let go. It is 100% compatible with the steam version, and it fixes some parts in the expansion where the game literally becomes unplayable on a modern machine because some of the graphics make a runaway GPU situation. It doesn't change stuff in the game, just fixes a TON of little bugs (like some of the character's powers that weren't coded as described, or are broken at higher levels). really - it's a great, great patch.

Very tempting but I think I will pass on BTTF. Still have a huge backlog from winter sale! And besides - there is a good chance BFFT could be 5-7 at winter sale 2011?!! That's how I picker up Monkey Island Complete a while back.

Anyone agree with this strategy?

Ended up picking up Oblivion GOTY, BTTF, Blood Bowl and the two Bit.Trip games. Curious to see what we have in a half-hour with today's deals.
Is there any kind of directory of all Steam games which support a controller?
I am still a couple of hours back catching up on posts so if this has already been answered, I'll edit this message out when i catch up to it.

The answer is yes - you can go into "Search" in Steam here, then click "Advanced Search", and the drop-down box named "Category" has "Controller-enabled" as an option. Change to this and you'll find 328 games that are contoller-ready without extra effort like xpadder.

When you're looking in store pages, look for the "controller-enabled" icon:
ico_controller.gif
on the right side of the page under "Game Details".

Cheers.

I almost bought Bit.trip but I've been sucked into buying a lot of "cute" games like that but I never seem to get around to playing them. I mean, I desperately want to play the copy of Amnesia I bought six months ago, but I only have 30 min. of playtime so far. My gaming habits are weird.

You are not alone, I'm also going to wait for BTTF to drop.

Picked up Garry's Mod for $2.50 and Toki Tori for $1.24 so far. Really tempted to get Bit. Trip Runner or Beat, are those daily deals or not?

That's my strategy as well (mostly because I like BTTF but don't love it). While I don't see it getting into the $5-$7 price range by winter, I think $8-$10 is very likely as it will have been about 6 months since the last part of the series was released.

Both Bit.Trip games are daily deals.

I picked up both Bit.Trip games...almost bought Recittear but I have WAY too many RPGs on the backlog.

If you don't have it yet, Toki Tori is an amazing deal for $1.24!
