I must just be old. Final Fantasy 2 (IV) and 3 (VI) were the best, with Kefka being the best villain in the series.
Final Fantasy VII just bothered me. The mechanics and system were fine, but even the first time I played I absolutely HATED the characters.

The "hero" was a whiny little turd who find himself in the fetal position not once, not twice, but THREE times over the course of the story, and the main villain was a prancy, preening bishounen with all kinds of mommy issues. Seriously. He cries for his mommy the entire damn game.

Sure, he had cool music, and had a neat sword. But all of the characters were whiny.

Seriously, the protagonist and primary antagonist made me remember how thankful I was that Dragon Quest has a silent protagonist.

Final Fantasy games are a product of the time, you were either there when all the magic happened or you were not.
Probably true. Also, I did my gaming on computers rather than console so my early CRPGs were western ones: Wizardry, Might & Magic, Bard's Tale, Ultima, AD&D Gold Box stuff, Wasteland, etc.

To this day, JRPG stuff is mainly weird and scary to me :speaktothehand:

You had me until this. Many great JPRG games happened between the last NES Dragon Warrior game and VII and Dragon Warrior VII was a bore. (I'm still a VII hater though.)

My first JRPG was Dragon Warrior and my first JRPG love was Final Fantasy 1. The SNES and Genesis came around and it was a JRPG love fest. I also played some WRPG on PC but it wasn't the same. Ultima VI and VII were a distraction, not the main event.

That is what I miss about the good ol'days is that there were different tastes. Now a'days it seems that most buy everything and play only the same 4 popular games.  Back in the day you played mainly only one of the big genres JRPG, FPS, PCRPG, Platform, Shoot 'em ups, Sports, Strat, Adventure, War or Fighting games (Later came MMORPG and SIM) and only dabbled with the others.

Everyone likes to tell me how the games I enjoy suck now that everyone is an expert on all genres...

I finally finished White March part I and II for Pillars of Eternity and they were great.  Lots of snow and ice I guess as far as the outdoor maps went but there was some really great art to be found for an isometric game.  Inside the battery was especially cool.  If you've played and like Pillars of Eternity you'll like the two expansions, its more of the same but the story is a nice detachment from the main quest and imo is more interesting.  Some pretty cool enemies towards the end too.  I think both parts took me around 10 hours to complete.

Definitely worth that random D2U (or w/e that site is called) Valentines coupon glitch for $12.

Screw the voice acting I just want the non shited upon version of the soundtrack. They screwed the music up in the hd version. I want the original recordings.
From what I read they included the original tracks in the PS4 version. You can choose between original or remastered. Looking at the Steam version, seem like it's the PS4 port. Unless they screw us and release this with just the remastered tracks.

Final Fantasy 7 was my first FF, followed by 8, then 9, then 10. Then I played FF1, FF2 (original), FF Tactics, FF4, FF Tactics Advance, FF Mystic Quest, FF Tactics Advance R2, FFX-2, FF7 Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core FF7, and Dissidia. I've played some of FF14 with my gf, and I appreciate how the series has progressed, but I'm not overly fond of the changes throughout the years. They lost me with FF11 and online play back in the day, then lost me again when FF12 ended up being that suggestion nonsense. Plus, those tiny little kid things from the Gamecube versions creep me out. It's like Jared Fogle made those bastards, especially considering that some NPCs in FF14 act like prostitutes and say lewd things. Why the hell do I want a 3-foot-tall chipmunk-faced baby creature telling me I'm hot?

I haven't played FF6, and I was a teenager when I played most of the FF series, but I'd rank them in this order from amount I enjoyed them when I played them:

1. FF8 - had to replay it to appreciate it, but it really does have a good story and element of strategy in the combat system; I also personally like that style of character and level design (I really like Parasite Eve, as spoo mentioned)

2. FF4 - would be my top pick, but the whole moon thing kinda ruined it for me; great story and great characters, though

3. FF10 - great jump to voiced acting, better graphics, much longer game back in the day; not as great today as it was back then, but the combat and gameplay are still awesome

4. FF7 - enjoyed the story, but again didn't enjoy the whole mind trip thing

5. FF Tactics - one of the most adult and impactful stories in the series, I really enjoyed it despite its flaws (and the characters were great)

6. FF Mystic Quest - often-overlooked gem that doesn't quite play like the other FF games; story is okay, but the levels and combat are good

7. FF1 - okay, so I played the Dawn of Souls version, which was most like much better than the original and had an okay story

8. FFX-2 - ehhh...it's decent if you can get past the omg girl power half-caff mocachino let's get mani-pedis at a spa while we talk about cute boys vibe

9. FF9 - if we're talking about whiny, then look no further than these goddamn characters in this goddamn game that I only put on the list at all because some of the features were pretty good and if I don't say something nice about it you'll all report me for shit-talking your beloved crap game

10. Crisis Core FF7 - everything aside from the actual story was pretty good; Square Enix definitely had a streak of shit plots and terrible voice acting, and this game could have been good if not for all the retarded dialogue and off-the-wall story

Also, my first ever RPG was Super Mario RPG in 1996. One of the best Square Enix games ever produced.

I must confess it. I helped to translate FFVII to english. You got me again.

Wow! you played nearly everything except the best one, Blade.

I cant take anyones opinion seriously who says FF9 is a crap game
I can't take anyone who thinks it's a good game seriously. It's so bad.

People complain about Squall being whiny, but FF9 has two whiny characters that take four discs to realize their personalities make them unique. Not to mention, there are two other characters (Quina and Steiner) who are plot elements for immature humor and pratfalls. I only liked Freya as a character, with "run away from home" Garnet being a distant second. Amaranth and Eiko really didn't fit in plot-wise, from what I remember. I get the whole "nerds love the game because it's secretly about non-conformism" gimmick, but I never felt that way and can't relate. Squall's stoicism was preferable over Zidane's monkey business. People get tattoos of Vivi, which is completely stupid. Also, buying the official guide means you got a few sentences of information followed by "read more about this at PlayOnline.com!" So a physical guide that tells you to go to a digital guide.

I played it all the way through and enjoyed SOME things in it, like the auction house and some of the locations. I also kind of liked the ability system. But from disc 3 onward, it was just bad. Triple Triad was better than Tetra Master, Mog Station was tedious, and the ending was pretty awful. Why not throw in a few more random bosses? Maybe it was Dio who was really, really behind everything.

I used to get banned from FFShrine by people who think it's the best game ever made and thought I was wrong to argue its ineffability, so I don't want to argue about it. I agree to disagree with people now, and I can accept that some people just can't see how bad something is. Trump won the Republican nomination and Hillary will probably win for Democrats, after all.

Edit:

Wow! you played nearly everything except the best one, Blade.
Final Fantasy Adventure? No, I just don't know how I'm going to feel about FF6 since it gets lots of hype as being the best. It probably is, especially from everything I've heard about it. And I own it on a few platforms, so I might play it at some point. FF9's hype didn't ruin the game for me--I disliked it without anyone's help--so it might run opposite for FF6. I really enjoy the Dragon Quest series, and Parasite Eve (first game, definitely not the second) is my favorite non-FF Squaresoft game.

I guess Courier of the Crypts was on a glitch at the Humble Store for a like a minute at European time while you were all sleeping. Tomasety PMs me and I just happened to be up because the dogs needed to go out to pee and of course it's done by the time I look.

So anyway, y u all no bai Courier of Crypts on glitch for 3 seconds at 2am?

Bah, nobody cares about glitches today. Today's all about the start of motherfucking EUROVISION baby!

InCulto-from-Lithuania-re-007.jpg

What is it? - a yearly exhibition of terrible choreography, sequinned hotpants and casual xenophobia. There's also some singing, but it's really, really naff. Europe gets together, everybody puts a song into a competition, and we vote on who's best. That's what's supposed to happen, but it rarely ends up that way. We use it as an excuse to bitch about our neighbours.

Why does this matter? - because it's badass. It's gone beyond the "lets all be friends after that big scuffle we had in the war" that we had in the 50s, nowadays it's a hideous beast that's spawned a million drinking games and excuses to party; seriously, Eurovision parties are the shit. It's not a pre-requisite to be drunk, but it might tame your senses a bit if you are - you're going to be visually and orally assaulted. Probably violated. Definitely scarred.

Where is it being screened? - for the first time ever it's being screened in the US. I imagine your local gaybar will be showing it (it's terrifically camp), but any half-decent cable operator must have it somewhere. Failing that, find a dodgy stream. Trust me, it's worth it.

When is it on? - the semi-finals (yes, it's that big) are on tonight and Thursday where they whittle the field down from 42 to 26 for the final. The final itself is on Saturday. If you want car-crash hilarity, the semis are where it's at. It'll reinforce every stereotype you had about the Eastern Bloc, and hopefully create some new ones. Motoki will be in heaven.

NB - all times are Yooropeean, so it'll be in the afternoon for you chaps.

If you're not excited about this shit, you should be.

EUROVISION BABY

On another subject I am really feeling that the community is literally ruining Battleborn. Battleborn at it's core is a really good game. The problem lies in that it seems like half of the people don't understand how to play Battleborn, the other half don't communicate to help the players who don't know what to do. At launch day it wasn't bad but now it's pretty terrible. Also I noticed I have an actual good game maybe 1 out of every 10 games. The other 9 games are one team basically dominates.
I just picked up Battleborn so prepare for the community to get a tiny bit worse. I kept going back and forth on whether I wanted it, so when I saw I was at 2999 games after some mindless Tremorclicking, I figured game 3000 was a good enough excuse to buy something else I don't need. It does look neat though. And I paid about 31 bucks for it + the preorder DLC from a man in a trenchcoat so it isn't like I straight up faked it off the Steam front page. Yeah I am trying really hard to justify a whim purchase. Whatever.

Anywho, I have a soft spot for Final Fanasty IV but I know it is partially nostaligia. I enjoyed FF7 a lot but I mostly liked the different things you could do in the game and the more epic feel, the story I did not think much of and would not say it was as good as the stories of FFIV or FFVI. Some of the newest games in the series just feel soulless to me.

Symphony of the Night was my standout game for the PS1 era and that is a game I will revisit form time to time. Just like I playthrough Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 (3 if I am in the mood to torment myself), Zelda : A Link to the Past and a few other games every few years. I'd argue all of those games were fantastic games not just for their time, but fantastic in general. I'd toss Final Fantasy 4 and 6 in that grouping as well.

Personally, out of the FF's that I've played - FF6+7 are my favorites.

FF's I've played include: FF1 on NES; and FF5+6+7+8+9 on PSX.

Working on FF13-1 on PC, here and there.

Also own FF13-2 on PC, but ain't started it yet.

A few hours ago, a Groupees dev confirmed that all purchases from Bundle in a Box are now available on your Groupees purchase page. If you still have links to the bundles, they now redirect to this page where you can reclaim your codes. You will receive keys if the game had them, although no one knows yet if keys will be added later for other games.

Pretty much agree with this... Its like asking of you would rather die by drowning or being burnt alive...?

Hey guys, what's going on in the Console+ Deals Mega Thread (All Square Gaming Discussion) thread?
Speaking of that, I know I am late to the discussion, but I consider Final Fantasy Tactics my favorite console game ever. I still dabble in it from time to time. Hopefully FFT will come to Steam soon. Really surprised it hasn't yet.

I am a master race slappy now though.

Yeah, this pretty much describes me and my friends. Sure, we played any 2600 or NES game we could get hands on, but by the time of SNES/Genesis, we had pretty much devolved into just sports (fighting *is* a sport). Madden/NBA ruled the home and SF/MK ruled the arcades (and later home too). I didn't even know about all these RPGs. Somewhere along the line came Wolfenstein 3D/Doom/Quake, but *my* circle wasn't really into that (other than to watch one of the Whiz kids beat Mecha-Hitler).

My first experience with Final Fantasy characters was Kingdom Hearts. My second, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (which isn't as terrible as people say). I've tried playing the very first FF, but lost the thread a couple hours in. I own Dissidia (012 I think), I, II, IV Complete, VII, VIII, IX, XII, XIII, Tactics War Lions and was interested in Versus XIV (now 15). I keep getting caught up in the zeitgeist of the community to buy them - then I don't play them.

I did buy and complete Chrono Trigger (DS) though. That game was great.

She just likes it because it's fucking hipster to like shit everyone else hates or thinks is lame or old or useless or creepy uncanny valley or whatever.

gawd dat game rankles my chains so much.  :twoguns:

I think like half way through the first episode. It like totally made me want to gag myself with a spoon and stuff.

I just really, really, REALLY could not stomach that fake ass anachronistic middle aged Frenchman writing for a teenaged girl in the US Pacific Northwest with every fucking cliche they could come up with mixed with old ass 90s shit from their own youth.

Late to the party, but Lufia II > Chronotrigger.
Lufia 2 did have some of the best puzzles in the day. I quite liked the graphics and soundtrack as well. I thought Chrono Trigger was pretty good, but man I really didn't like those endings much. Most were extremely gimmicky and silly (though I did get the dev room at least). The fighting system was great and innovative and of course the music was awesome. Two of the best SNES rpgs easily, and I liked Lufia 1 as well. interesting that 2 was the prequel.

All I will add to the too-lengthy SquareEnix discussion is that I too would love to have Final Fantasy Tactics on Steam.

Like many others here, I'm sure, I have it for my PS1, but you can imagine that if we can't be bothered to start a Steam game, we're sure as hell not getting up out of our seats and putting a disc into the PlayStation.
