No one is going to review a monetization-based system that is in the game of corporate media. It's not in their interest.

Only indie reviewers will mention it and it still seems uncouth to give a good game a bad score for how bad the excess costs are in any title.

Also, the "vote with you wallet" thing won't work, more so in the world of freemium games. It's already known that whales make up a significant amount of that market. You're only going to beat them through regulatory actions, essentially making any game using that model require age verification (Mature audiences only, like some countries), no use of in-game currency to obfuscate monetary costs, clear pricing to reward rate (aka SSS-tier gacha pull is equivalent to $XXX.XX in real world cost to acquire on average), and disclosure of code for chance mechanisms to make sure they're not being altered (similar to casino electronic machines).

It's never going to be banned, too difficult. But it should at least be 100% clear what you're getting when you put money into the system and only adults should be allowed into such ecosystems.

As long as you have a for-profit economic system, then there will always be those wanting to exploit our built-in defects (ex. addiction) for monetary gain. And people with money become people with power.

Reviews won't knock off for technical incompetence they certainly won't for egregious monetization.

Trying to find a super cheap Dawn of War copy now that I see there's free anniversary upgrades.

They have been regulating them more in small countries in like Europe. But yeah they make too much to likely be stopped. At least until they cross the wrong person with influence.

Minors at the very least will probably get more legal protection from the predatory practices that have taken place.

Here are my Steam Next Fest Impressions. These demos really took something out of me this time with many being OK enough but nothing amazing. I still have some demos remaining, but most will likely be dropped especially for longer RPG ones.

There are some standouts though with Atomic Owl, Aurascope, Karate Survivor, Minishoot' Adventures, and Seed of Heroes.
Other recommended ones are ANTONBLAST, AOKAKI, Dimensionals, Divine Dynamo Flamefrit, Echo Point Nova, Gravelord, MainFrames, Momibosu, Moon Watch: Time-Control Deckbuilder, Neo Harbor Rescue Squad, Otherskin, Scarlet Deer Inn, Silent Sadie, SOPA - Tale of the Stolen Potato, The Spirit of the Samurai, Symphonia, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate, Teeto, and TetherGeist.

30 Birds – 5 minutes. This is a narrative musical game with nice artwork and okay enough dialogue. I just couldn’t get into the making random music. It’s just not for me, but this seems like a quality game and supposedly has some puzzles. 6/10

Achilles: Survivor – 7 minutes. Somewhat awful survivors like game where you play a roman character and go around and survive. The graphics in this are all blurry and some things blend in like skeletons to the background. The music is okay as are the controls. The gimmick in this one is building buildings with bronze. They do different things and offer up stat bonuses. I didn’t like this at all and quit during my run. 5.5/10

Aether Singularity – 8 minutes completed demo (training level). This one is a kind of old school looking Resident Evil 1 game with not as bad tank controls, but clunky controls and a kind of real time battle system with guns. This one had good music and seemed OK enough, but the actual battles were not super, super fun. It was alright enough and functional enough but actions felt slow and funky especially the dodge. I would play it bundled, but it’s not really my type of game. 6/10

AI LIMIT – 34 minutes stopped after dying about 5 or 6 times. This one is an alright souls like game. It feels very indie in the graphics and how the controls feel at times, but honestly it was alright. Fighting against multiple foes felt very loose though. This one doesn’t have too much of a story other than you don’t have memories and have to restore them and branches. Solid enough action game, but I would only get it bundled. 6.5/10

ANTONBLAST – 24 minutes completed one level. This is a very obviously inspired Pizza Tower like Wario 2D action platformer. This one has a silly story and decent graphics. Some of the moves were tricky to pull off in succession, but it controlled well enough the series X controller. The sound/music were exciting and you just try to make it to the end of the level and run back for happy hour. It’s completely fine and pretty close to the level of Pizza Tower sans maybe cleaner controls and cleaner level design in Pizza Tower. Well worth playing. 7/10

AOKAKI – 17 minutes completed first level and demo. This one is a kind of Ninja Gaiden feeling 2D platforming action game. The sounds and music are excellent. The graphics are solid too. With the Series X controller some things felt a bit floaty mainly the attack and a parry. It’s a very decent game but I was getting hit by environmental hazard often and just barely made it through the first level. Still solid, but is only a bundle game for me. 7/10

Archons – 17 minutes lost a few rounds. This one is a strange feeling Vampire Survivors like game. In this one you control two characters who attack between them. This controls similar to Brothers with one character on the left stick and one on the right. This is really tough overall and it’s hard to keep an eye with multiple enemies on two characters. The graphics, sound and music are all fine for the most part. The difficulty turned me off a bit though, but it’s a unique take on the formula. Just probably a bit to hard for me. 6.5/10

Atomic Owl – 11 minutes completed first level and demo. This one is also a 2D action platformer kind of Ninja Gaiden style but this one has sweet electronic synth music, very good controls with the Series X controller, an alright story, and small but detailed graphics. I wish the main character was bigger to see the action better. This one is super solid and would be worth it on sale or bundled. 8/10

Aurascope – 38 minutes completed demo. Now this was a fun 2D platforming adventure game. It’s almost like a Super Mario 64 where instead of collecting stars you collect energy. There are also star cores hidden around to collect as well. The controls with the Series X controller have this weird feel to them, but you get used to jumping and a dive in the air and controlling this flash move. The music/graphics are excellent, as is the sense of exploring the environment. You even have some Sonic like moves like rolling in a ball. It’s pretty much exploring quickly to get star cores and eventually the main star in levels and there are missions similar to Super Mario 64. It’s a fun game and really high quality. 9/10

The Axis Unseen – 20 minutes. I really didn’t like this one too much. It’s a heavy metal bow and arrow hunting game or something. It had a horrible tutorial and the main game was just me shooting things now and then with a decent soundtrack. I just didn’t see much point in this, but check it out if you want a see a game from a developer who worked on Fallout and Skyrim. 5.5/10

Battle Train – 10 minutes complete 2 battles. I really didn’t like this one too much, but it’s original. In this one you play a deck building battle to destroy an enemy’s structures and build track to get minerals and lay your foundation. This is high quality stuff and had decent voice acting and graphics. I just didn’t enjoy the gameplay much, but it’s not a throwaway game. 6.5/10

Bloodshed – 32 minutes completed first area. This is a take on the arena Vampire Survivor genre except it’s auto firing FPS action. It’s kind of Blood like and you just move around, shoot pillars and enemies and get upgraded. You even get treasure chests with a little slot thing from elites. This one was alright and looked and sounded alright. It was getting very repetitive already though. It’s worth a play and better the usual arena survival game. 6.5/10

The Book of Buja – 5 minutes. This one is a Legend of Zelda inspired retro adventure game that has an okay overworld but it’s not the most exciting to explore. The music and graphics were fine enough. 6/10

Brotherhood – 2 minutes. This feels like an awful version of Wolfenstein 3D. Very janky moving, shooting and everything is a bullet sponge. Needs so much balancing. 4.5/10

The Chronos Event - 12 minutes lost on one run. This is an extremely jank third person arena rogue lite shooter. The main model is very well endowed. The main gimmick is you can rewind time and the previous you is there and shoots and distracts others. It is run on energy and you have to constantly switch out weapons. There is potential here but dodging is near impossible unless in slo mo. 6/10

Cursebane – 25 minutes. This one is kind of rogue lite action game where you go one scene at a time fighting things. It was kind of just OK and controlled decently enough, but I wasn’t crazy about it. It just didn’t feel exciting and different enemies can be hp sponges and took more hits than I like to kill. 6/10

DGGWAre – 3 minutes. A Warioware type of mini game collection focusing around a streamer Destiny. It wasn’t very interesting, was hard to understand the streamer (noise too low) and the mini games were just OK. I didn’t get all of them. 5.5/10

Dimensionals – 19 minutes completed tutorial and demo. This one is a kind of deck builder of sorts where everyone can have a few abilities that you collect passive and active. You start the battle with 1 energy and get one every turn like Hearthstone. You mainly use your character skills and survive and try to win battles, of which get you more skills. Two like skills can be combined to make it better along with an upgrade fee. This one feels very high quality although the battles weren’t super exciting overall. It was clean, but not as fun as say Slay the Spire, even though you have access to different heroes’ abilities. 7/10

Disdain – 6 minutes. This one is throwback to Quake and feels a bit like it, but everything is moving too fast and shots and such don’t feel weighty like that game. The graphics and all are just OK. Unpolished but has potential. 6/10

Divine Dynamo Flamefrit – 14 minutes completed level and demo. This is an action-adventure game similar to like Illusion of Gaia or a game like that. The graphics feel old school and look nice and everything sounds nice too. The actual gameplay is playable with mainly charging, attacking, and a clunky dodge. There is also a boss battle system using mecha and shooting. It’s pretty interesting and very playable and high quality. The adventuring part was kind of boring though, but it’s a very decent game. Just wish there was more to the adventuring levels. If there is treasures and collectibles in the main game it will make it more enjoyable. 7/10

Dream Rhythm – 5 minutes completed only song. This one controls OK with the Series X controller. The song was pretty nice sounding. It’s a rhythm game and the rhythm parts aren’t crazy hard mainly being little circles coming from right and left. It’s still challenging and alright enough to get in a bundle or discounted. 7/10

Echo Point Nova – 46 minutes. One of the strangest FPS games I’ve ever played where it’s a lot more about doing tasks and navigating around everywhere than finishing levels persay. There are energy orbs around to help power you up. The graphics and atmosphere are nice although the shooting is just alright. This feels like a really cool hybrid exploring/parkour/shooting game. Not my type of game, but this is a very solid demo that went on longer. 7.5/10

Emberdrift – 6 minutes. This one is 2D platforming rogue lite game about moving fast and exploring and defeating things. I thought the movement was OK enough, but I wasn’t excited about the gameplay. It’s mainly about timing things, but I wasn’t enjoying the exploring. The graphics are alright and the sound and music are pumping. 6.5/10

Enci’s Solution – 17 minutes completed demo. This one was a seriously hard 2D precision platformer about a guy around robots and you are trying to survive and help them too. This one I died likely over 20 times in the demo. It’s satisfying to get through long sections, but it’s all super precise. I would get it bundled, but the difficulty is a bit high for me. 6.5/10

Fowl Damage – 5 minutes. Another 2D precision platformer except you play an egg who cracks for anything. You need to have the jumps land perfectly, roll to safety, and cannot fall from large heights. This was frustrating as heck, but unique for a platformer. The music and graphics were solid. 6/10

The Girl from Arkanya – 14 minutes. A really nice looking 2D action-adventure Legend of Zelda style game. The music is really loud and kind of repetitive for the main town. I was not getting into the script, although it’s something about girls and hunting demons. Your main character is a treasure hunter. This just felt slow and I wasn’t getting into it. I also didn’t know how to get to the woods. It was alright, but I was ready for the demo to end. 6/10

Gravelord – 19 minutes. Pretty cool boomer shooter with a gravekeeper who kills necroed monsters. It controls alright, is hard as nails, and was fun, but I lost too much health and the enemies aim is very good. Too hard for me but a good version of this type of game. It felt quite a bit like Quake. 7/10

Hazuki Dies: She Has No Name – 20 minutes. Just a very gimmicky weird RPG game about a super weak girl who wants to be a doctor. She is so weak and dies in one hit, so you must do damage before taking hits. She also has no confidence, cries a lot and looks cute but is really annoying. This is quirky and if you love dying in one hit to anything you’ll love this. It’s better than average, but just by a bit. 6.5/10

Karate Survivor – 39 minutes completed main level and demo. This is a really cool Kung Fu Vampire Survivors like game. The music and sound are good and the graphics are excellent. What makes this stand apart is the combo system for attacks. It makes it really cool for timing and doing damage. This was pretty awesome and will be an easy buy on release. 8/10

Kilaflow – 5 minutes. This is one of those speed running 3D platformer games. The graphics, sound, and music are adequate and the controls with the Series X controller are fine enough. It gets confusing combining moves, but there is some cool stuff here. I’m not super into speed run games, but this seems adequate enough for that. 6.5/10

KVLT – 7 minutes. Possibly one of the worst FPS demos you can put out. The game looks OK enough and is about killing Nazis or something, but you also die in like 2 or 3 hits from very far away. You’re pretty much sniping with a shotgun or something. The Eldritch view for seeing hidden objects is very gimmicky too. Not fun at all. 5/10

The Last Humble Bee – 15 minutes. This one is an action-adventure game where you play a bee looking for obelisks on a big land getting level ups and rolling and jumping (kind of like sonic). The rest is like a Diablo kind of dodging stuff game. It’s alright overall and looks OK as well, but I wasn’t feeling the exploration. There is stuff in the non-obelisk parts, but it all blends together and you just go through it getting gems and killing enemies for XP. Nothing amazing here, but nothing bad either. 6.5/10

Level Up: The Playable Rap Album – 10 minutes. A really cool idea of a playable rap album, but the platforming and fighting feels horrible. It’s some cheapo game engine and it doesn’t feel good. The music is pretty cool, but the game itself isn’t good. Really unique, but needs a lot of work. 6/10

Lovish – 13 minutes completed demo. This one is a one hit kill make it to the end of the stage 2D platforming action game with a silly story and little animations with silly characters. The music and sound are very old school and excellent. The actual gameplay is okay and works OK but one hit dying makes any fight especially boss fights tricky. Nothing amazing, but very solid and polished. 6.5/10

MainFrames – 26 minutes completed demo. Cute 2D platformer that becomes very hard about a floppy disk in a computer with viruses. It’s pretty interesting though I got to a point where I broke the game and couldn’t control anything. I got back to that point and ended up beating the game. I like the graphics, sound and idea, and one unique part is a mouse pointer moving around/manipulating objects on screen. It’s tricky to control but very unique. 7.5/10

Metal Bringer – 9 minutes. I really didn’t like this mecha customizing beat em up in arena game. The graphics remind me of the PS1, but I didn’t like the music much and the gameplay was just weird with not very clean fighting. There seems to be some good customization of your mech though. 6/10

Minishoot' Adventures – 56 minutes completed demo. This one is an excellent blend of Legend of Zelda and Bullet hell. The controls are very good with the Series X controller, the graphics are nice, and the music and sound are good. The story is nonexistent for what I saw. It’s all about the action and adventure and it was super fun and I would keep playing it if I owned it. 8/10

Momibosu – 19 minutes completed demo. This one is an interesting Metroidvania kind of game where you play some miner guy and he gets a droid and gets powers. In this you also have to fight hard boss fights using parry and charging with attacks for full damage. I managed to get past the first boss, but it wasn’t easy. This one was fun enough, but likely not for me. 7/10

Moon Watch: Time-Control Deckbuilder – 56 minutes completed a few runs. This is one of the strangest deck building survivor games ever. In this one if you don’t move nothing moves. You have 4 energy to start and can play cards. These generally do attacks or support yourself. Pretty much when you move around time for the level counts down and when that timer in the lower left corner reaches 0 you go to the next level. It’s a weird one kind of like a Smash TV deck builder. It’s very hard to understand and also hard in general. I liked it although everything other than the gameplay felt a little basic like the graphics. I would get it bundled or on a heavy discount. 7.5/10

Neo Harbor Rescue Squad – 38 minutes completed demo. This is a homage to those older Trauma Team games except you act as a paramedic. This means some visual novel segments, followed by on the scene treatments where each treatment is a mini game. This has good graphics and music/sound. This was fun although some treatments are hard to understand at first. It’s high quality and worth a play, although I would only get it bundled. 7/10

Otherskin – 67 minutes completed demo. This one is an action adventure third person game where you play someone exploring an unknown planet and have a suit that adapts to the planet. There is a lot of exploring and fighting enemies with guns/sword and it’s quite fun overall. The graphics are solid, sound design as well and it controlled pretty well. The only part that went super wonky was a boss fight that ended the demo. They need to have a lock on, or I need to figure out how to do that because I died once because I wasn’t sure where I was in the arena. This is a great demo and a type of genre we don’t get as often. The exploring felt natural and everything was cool to explore. I would get this on sale or bundled 7.5/10

Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds Ultimate – 6 minutes. This demo was awful. You only get co-op mode so you get to beat up random enemies with floaty controls and not much else to it. I know this is a well-regarded beat em up, and I have a version (Vita I think), but this felt antiquated and floaty for combat. I wish they had some of the story at least a stage or so, but this demo was not good at all. The graphics, sound and music were fine, but the magic other than having cool characters wasn’t there. I’ll still likely get it bundled or cheap later on (hopefully a PS5 copy). The gameplay just didn’t feel awesome though. 6/10

Pixel Quest Survivor – 5 minutes. This one is about as generic a Vampire Survivors clone as you can get. You have different classes with some different skills. The music is really repetitive, graphics simple and the gameplay just not very engaging. There are so many of these games, and this one just is OK, but I would only get it in the cheapest of bundles. 5.5/10

Reviver – 79 minutes completed demo. This one was a cute puzzle narrative game about a guy and girl and how they become friends. The key is you can switch between timelines and times (years) to solve puzzles and such. It was not bad at all, although one puzzle was very obtuse. I had to see how it was done and I’m not sure how it was solved. Other than that, a solid enough puzzle game with some bugs (I got frozen and lost all my progress and had to restart). 6.5/10

Rogue Rollout – 33 minutes lost a run. This is Yahtzee with artifacts for multipliers and also bad artifacts that let you not score things. Just keep going and win rounds getting a minimum score. Honestly, it’s fine enough, but I’m not sure why I played so long. It was a little mindless and had lots of luck, and I wouldn’t buy it because just a whole lot of rounds of Yahtzee is not very exciting. 6.5/10

Sapo 3D – 5 minutes. A way too basic 3D platformer with a frog and getting flies to unlock levels. This is only for speed runners and it was really boring already. Also probably has some of the worst camera controls ever with a camera that goes nuts with the stick and can’t be (or I don’t know how) reset to a default position. Just bundle fodder at the best. 5/10

Scarlet Deer Inn – 45 minutes. This one is a really interesting 2D adventure platform game about a girl in a small village and she is doing some tasks when she notices something interesting where she goes. There is a torch system here where you need to keep it lit (an old school torch) or bad things happen in the dark. For uniqueness the characters all embroidered giving an interesting look. There is some Slavic folklore as well. This was really unique and not super frustrating for things. I would get this bundled for sure. 7.5/10

Seed of Heroes – 108 minutes lost a few runs. This is a really cool feeling Vampire Survivors like game where you have heroes of which your character can become any hero, and you get 2 more companions who hopefully complement your main hero. There is many hp sponge enemies especially bosses, but this one is challenging and fun. You get items which some characters need to upgrade their class, and there are some passive abilities added on as well. I really liked this one and will get on sale or bundled. 8/10

Shattered Dimensions – 6 minutes. Very confusing solve puzzles on one screen witty humor game that I got stuck on the second screen with. Hints would be helpful, but alas it wasn’t for me at all. 5.5/10

Silent Sadie – 34 minutes completed demo. More like silent sadist as this is a unique 2D platformer with precision and a black and white aesthetic with silent movie music and sounds. These are so excellently done that it really brings you back to those movies. The control is generally pretty good too. I was enjoying this quite a bit until you get two things I hate a lot: stealth segments in not stealth games and auto scrolling parts. These were both repetitive, hard, and slow at times. I died so many times during these parts. I wanted to give it an 8/10 before these parts, but both brought it down to about a 7.5/10. The soundtrack is almost enough to give it that score alone.

Somber Echoes – 26 minutes. This is a more souls like Metroidvania with timing in combat and lots and lots of jumping around. I like the graphics enough in this and the atmosphere, but the story is blah and I just wasn’t clicking totally with everything. It’s all really solid enough, but was just missing something to make it feel like a better Metroidvania. Also, the exploring was not super fun. 6.5/10

Some Goodbyes We Made – 7 minutes. 13 I believe mini games about saying goodbye. It’s more an art project than anything but they mainly require simple inputs. This is cute and interesting, although it’s more of a bundle type thing than something I’d buy. 6.5/10

SOPA - Tale of the Stolen Potato – 33 minutes completed demo. This was an adventure game about a kid who needs to get potatoes for soup and a frog in a hat steals them. I liked the graphics and atmosphere in this quite a bit. The puzzles aren’t bad and the controls are alright with the Series X controller. Overall it seemed pretty nice and I think it’s a fine pickup in a bundle. 7/10

Spin Hero – 32 minutes died on one run. This is a slot machine rogue lite that is OK enough random fun. The graphics are OK, as is the music and sounds. I don’t like the way the enemies amp up in power, as the last enemies I fought were dealing a constant damage every turn. It was way too high to negate most of it. Also, your own symbols don’t really change much over time either. 6/10

The Spirit of the Samurai – 46 minutes. This one is a samurai 2D action game where you play a samurai who is fighting for his village after a demon attack. This is a strange feeling game at times as I think it uses Claymation and puppetry for movement. It feels a little janky, but has some weight to it. I like the music a lot and the sound is okay except for the sounds when you hit the opponents. They sound kind of cheap there. The story seems okay for the most part. It’s interesting seeing a game with spirits in it. 7.5/10

Spirit X Strike – 59 minutes. This is a Fist of North Star fighting action game clone. This one actually isn’t too bad at first but you notice that first of all when enemies turn yellow they home in to you from anywhere. This includes red enemies. Second of all your dodge doesn’t work like say Dark Souls and instead dashes (for attacks) but doesn’t dash away properly since enemies jump and home you. This feels horrible especially for too many enemies attacking you and for boss fights. I liked It a lot at first, but it was just too messed up and I couldn’t beat the first boss at all. Very flawed but a fun flawed game. 6/10

Symphonia – 16 minutes completed demo. A 2D precision platformer with symphonic music, pretty graphics, good controls, and I think there is no combat in this, which is a good thing sometimes. I enjoyed this one enough to get it cheaper or bundled someday. 7.5/10

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate – 49 minutes completed demo. This one is a very decent Hades like TMNT action rogue lite with a nonsense story about portals and not the most amazing dialogue. The game controls excellently with the Series X controller and looks and sounds good. This one has some HP sponge enemies sometimes especially for more elite enemies. I’m guessing this is because of the co-op this has I believe. It’s alright anyway and is straightforward and fun enough. 7.5/10

Teeto – 13 minutes completed about half of a level. This is a 3D platform starring a blobby. This blob can absorb things to gain new properties and solve puzzles to get little blue ball creatures in a level. This is really simple, controls nicely, has decent sound/music, but is also very casual and that’s what brings it down a bit for me. It is a really nice possible co-op game though for those like collecting stuff in levels. I would get it bundled for sure. 7/10

Temtem: Swarm – 13 minutes. A really boring Vampire Survivors like game with a monster training element. Pretty much it evolves over the match, but everything feels so by the numbers here. The graphics/sound/music are really basic and there is nothing too interesting to get on the map from what I’ve seen. It’s likely a good one to play with kids, as you can do co-op when it comes out. I’ve played enough of these even this Steam Fest to know this is as cookie cutter as it gets. I would actually go for a Pokemon spinoff doing this with a bit more interesting thing in it. 6/10

TetherGeist – 43 minutes completed a level. This is a Celeste style precision platformer with this warping ability similar to dashes. It has an OK enough story too, but this is a bit too much for me. Once they got these weird mushroom jumps in the second level I was done. A very high quality game nonetheless. 7/10

Valkyrie Squad: Siege Breakers – 5 minutes. Just another Vampire Survivors game with some anime style portraits. It’s so generic even though you have 3 people in your squad. The upgrades where generic junk. The art style for enemies is really flat and not well animated. Also, one of the members looks like a D’va knockoff. Forgettable likely bundle fodder. 5.5/10

Vividrie – 4 minutes. This is a bullet hell rogue lite similar to Enter the Gungeon, but also a million times worse. The rooms are way too small, the bullets travel too fast, and the gameplay was not for me at all. The music is also just loud electronic music. This was awful IMHO and it needs a complete rework to be playable. 4.5/10

VOIN – 20 minutes. This one is a first-person action RPG like game. It’s very visceral and the combat is good. The equipment system is Diablo like, but just OK. I wasn’t really sure how to play the main game, but what I saw was decent enough. The graphics, music and sound are nice. 7/10

Windblown – 27 minutes lost a few runs. This is another Hades like action game where you play a creature and go around and hack and slash enemies. This has some bad choices for things mainly that the jumping between arenas is more annoying than anything and feels like it wastes time and that the enemies rarely if ever flinch so you just need to time perfectly attacks as they’ll keep doing whatever attacks they’re doing if you’re attacking them. The game feels very quick, but I just wasn’t liking the overall play. Because nothing flinches the co-op is likely needed as these enemies feel a little HP heavy. 6/10

Wings of the Endless – 10 minutes. Another 2D action Metroidvania. This one looks nice, musics/sounds are alright and the gameplay is just okay feeling. You smack around a hammer comboing things and things don’t flinch much here either. The dodging feels really awkward too. There is just something here keeping me from loving this and wanting to play more the demo. 6/10

Best Steam fest demo so far... Nuclear Sub. 10GB download. 3mins of uh, game time. 10 seconds of greatness, uninstalling it.

Wizordum was actually ok. 3d Wolfenstein type game but you're a mage shooting goblins and orcs.
Space Tales- Retro RTS, starcraft type controls and UI, 1950s style story and art. Not bad.
Vambrace Dungeon Monarch- Odd card and auto battler game. Mix of Darkest Dungeon and a card game. Has potential as I played it for 30mins and completed the 2 mission demo.
Streets of Rogue 2: Probably like the first game but it wouldn't run for me. Just a blue screen with 3 rectangles on it, doing nothing.
Netcode Conflict- 1st/3rd person survival single/mp game. End of the world cyborgs or something with fun floating vans that cant go over rocks. Maybe in a few years it will be good. Alpha stage now.

Delta Force- Extraction MP/Campaign? shooter. Remake of delta force games from 90s with modern game modes. Not bad, playable on an older machine at least.

Arrow Lake sounds disappointing. I weighed waiting for that or going with a 14700k back when it launched and now I don't regret my decision, though I've heard of 13000 and 14000 chips having heating issues. I got a Noctua NH-D15 so hopefully mine will be fine in the long run.
It's not a heating issue. It's a voltage issue that's physically damaging the chips.

Demon Turf: Neon Splash seems to be free if you own Demon Turf.
I dunno how old that news is but i didnt know and im sure a bunch of us got Demon Turf from a humble bundle or something

Thanks, just updated the mobo bios for the first time. Hopefully it'll still last a long time.

It is still up in the air, how bad it can be. Hopefully the bios settings keep the chip going for 4-5 years at least. Be on the look out for games not being able to properly cache shaders at the start of a game. If it fails, blue screens etc., that is a sign the chip is failing.

Supposedly, even though I ain't played it.
Did anyone even spent full price MSRP money on it to keep the studio open?
It felt like a number of people got it on or near launch around here and other cites I frequent that otherwise wouldn't have normally. But I assume that many used deal options to at least somewhat avoid paying full price oop. I doubt many people are paying full price around here.

I mean, it was a smaller game with a pretty hefty price tag and Ubisoft pulled the Epic exclusivity bullshit like all their other titles (6 months I think). Had it released on Steam at launch it probably could have hit enough sales for Ubisoft to keep them open...or at least closer to what they'd want.

It's a shame.

Saw this on Steamgifts:

https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/36087/2K_Horror_Bundle/

There's a 2K Horror bundle on Steam for $15.51 that includes Bioshock, Bioshock 2 Remastered, The Darkness II and The Quarry: Deluxe Edition. I bring this up because it's a complete a bundle type of bundle, so the price adjusts depending on if you already own games from the bundle. I owned everything except Quarry Deluxe Edition, so it ended up only costing me a little over $3 for Quarry Deluxe Edition.

Nice Complete-a-Bundle, for those missing stuff - I got all them already.

Bioshock 1 and Quarry definitely hit those horror vibes, if you ask me. Bio2 is probably less so, since you're likely familiar with Bio1 and know a good deal of its tricks and all.

Quarry so gives me those campy, Jason, and slasher movie vibes. I enjoyed it, for sure. Need to give it a replay, at some point in time.

The Darkness does have horror elements too - but, it's very action-y and over-the-top.

I like 'em all, though - but Bio1's the best game of the club; and Bio2's underrated w/ its improved combat. Also, Minerva's Den DLC for Bio2 is fantastic and the best part of that Bio2.

It also has now on Steam-version that UbiSoft Account requirement and freakin' Denuvo junk. Nobody wants that junk on Steam.

If anyone got it right w/ how to put games on Steam, it's New-BioWare with DA: Veilguard having no 3rd party crap and no EA crap. Hope that game turns out at least good, since New-BioWare at least got that part right - but I doubt anything from BioWare can top DAO or ME Trilogy/LE.

You know, it's almost as if a lot these publishing-companies like Ubi flat-out self-sabotage these companies purposely. It's either that or they just got the wrong people making these foolish decisions & calls, at the top of management.

I'm in the same position as you and I don't even like horror games but I'm tempted to get it just because that's such a good deal.

Everything I've seen and heard on Veilguard gives me almost no faith in it, especially as a fan of the DA series.

A recent video I saw from someone who got to play it for 7 hours at some EA event said it felt like a combination between God of War 2018's gameplay and Guardians of the Galaxy's quippy humor. That, combined with half of the party being supposedly bland or unlikeable and the fact that only THREE choices from Inquisition will carry over into this game (NOTHING from DA:O or DA2) and I just can't see being excited for this as a Dragon Age series fan. Unless you're part of the "don't ask questions, just consume product and then get excited for next product" group I suppose. LOL

Yeah I didn't care much for getting The Quarry, or at least wouldn't go out of my way to buy it. But at $3 and change I figured what the heck. LOL

So I’m hearing better combat, better humor, and more likable party members.

The only Dragon Age I played was Origins, thought it was ok. Mass Effect Legendary was fun, but Andromeda was dull. Don't have much faith in them to deliver another good game, but hopefully they surprise me.

I dunno; I love the DAO combat. It gives me those BG1/2, PST, and NWN vibes, which has more emphasis on strategy (than the super-actiony DA2 and DAI direction). And NWN1 EE got better, once they (BeamDog) added the old-school drawing around party to select multiple members thing. It's in the INI to enable it - but, it should be an option in the in-game Option menus.

See this for NWN EE - https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Neverwinter_Nights:_Enhanced_Edition#Enable_Player_Party_Control

It's interesting to see Greedfall 2 going for full-on DAO party-control with that classic BioWare-style "real-time" with pause combat.

If you own the original Sin Slayers, you can get the remastered version free.
OG version doesn't have a store page anymore due to publisher issues.

Eh, RTWP is fine, but for full party control nothing beats classic turn-based.

Yeah, but I don't need every game copying Divinity: OS1 and 2 and esp. BG3 and going turn-based just b/c BG3 struck it big. Variety is key.

man, BG3 was such a perfect Divinity: OS3. I'm so glad that I fully played the first two, first. and they've had such a good cadence with releases too. Where I can play thee pinnacle brand new crpg once every few years.

The thing that scares me is when Larian completely unsolicited announces that they will not be working on a "BG4". I sure hope they have another Divinity something in the works. Someone finally succeeded in taking over the old Bioware crpg, and I've loved each one of the releases unconditionally. They each were perfect. Divinity I was awesome. I guess the only thing that slightly surprised me was that D:OS2 didn't feel like a giant step up in quality. (most others would differ).

I never had any desire to play any of the Dragon Ages after the first one. I saw enough to know they weren't great.

It's crazy how everyone is afraid of making the crpg now. because none of them can touch the flawless Larian formula.

DA2: Ultimate is good, but it's more of an action-RPG and got a bunch of "dumbing-down" issues (and recycling areas) - but its story and character stuff is really good. And, DA2 base-game and especially DA2: Legacy DLC's also key to even play DAI, since there's some important stuff connecting right into DAI...without going into spoiler turf. DAI is better than DA2 IMHO - but it still suffers from other issues (of lots of bloat & side-quest filler).

About dev's afraid to make a CRPG - really? OwlCat literally made WH 40K: Rogue Trader. If OwlCat and their games ain't CRPG - yeah, I don't know what is. It's just these CRPG's are not really coming from the AAA Publisher Space currently; not coming from the EA's, UbiSofts, Atari's of the world (when Atari was still big-time, which ain't right now). They're all still coming from Indie and AA space - yeah, I think The Thaumatuge came out this year (March) too & there's Sovereign Syndicate that came out back in January. You also got Esoteric Ebb, which is eventually coming.

And we got at least new 2 or 3 studios coming out from the ashes of ZA/UM, after all the stuff that went down there w/ Disco Elysium - with games like XXX NightShift coming.

EDIT - That's the other thing: games often now take so long to make (i.e. often 5-10+ years), it might take a few years before you see the market maybe explode with more Larian-BG3 wannabe's.

Just like the Mass Effect games, I'm OK with the DA games feeling different between iterations. I even liked DA2, minus the constantly reused assets making the game feel smaller and more repetitive, but ME1 was similar in that regard as well. At this point, there is already minimal of the personal story that transfers between saves, so I'm more after a continuation of the overall story arc, character development and fun gameplay. My only hope is that Veilguard does the franchise better than Andromeda did to ME.

Of course, I don't have a GPU that will even run the game currently, so by the time I do, I'll get to play the better patched up version.

ME2 wasn't that much different from ME1, though. It still was a third-person squad-shooter with the CYOA branching decision-making - it's just they threw out a lot of the RPG-number stuff/dice-roll stuff out b/c it made less sense in a game that has always had game-controls like that of a shooter-game. And for controls on consoles & PC - well, both shooters on mouse and keyboard & gamepad were already figured out...as basically Halo for Xbox figured it out on the gamepad side, meanwhile KB/mouse was always fine numerous years ago on PC. Sure, ME2 leaned more of the questing side than exploration that ME1 tried - but, ME2 was the better game overall and a lot of the quests were stellar in that.

DA2's problem is/was this: well, mostly reviewers and gamers playing console-version complained about combat from DAO and we know EA wants more action in their games, especially sequels. So, this made the PC version more attractive to buy, not the console-versions. See what EA did to make Ultima more action-y, Dead Space more action-y (see DS3), and also make DAO more action-y, over the years - and you'll see EA likes to do this. Also, let's face it: RTWP ("Real-time" with pause) combat games doing the Hero-RTS/CRPG hybrid play best w/ keyboard & mouse, not gamepad. The combat was always fine with a keyboard/mouse, but never with a gamepad. And b/c of that, us PC gamers had to suffer w/ dumbed-down RTS elements in both DA2 and DAI (DAI still had some, but DA2 lacked A LOT of the strategy elements) so they could make sure the game was ALSO a hit on consoles and played better for console gamepads.

Hey all, Scott Demo Dump™ here!

Per my records, it's been August since I last did one of these. Since then we have 102 demos. (And I somehow got my Golden Dice in BG3 during that period, too... I swear I go outside...).

As always, we'll start out with the 8+ category.

Appears to be very fun, I just cut the demo short 'cause I'll get it for console probably

Following the trend, here's the Top 5 8, with links!

GameRatingReasons
NO-SKIN
9
Psychological horror roguelike; I enjoyed it and want to see more -- It's enough for me to still remember this two months later. Definitely messed up, but a choose your own adventure pixel horror demo is perfect for Halloween!
Death of the Reprobate
9
Splendid! From the creator of The Procession of Calvary, you get another Monty Python-esque point and click adventure that doesn't take itself seriously (but does, in it's own goofy ass way)
Battle Train
10
This might be a certifiable hit; TRAINS BRO -- I know nitrosmob didn't like it, but this is really a fun card game that mixes tabletop wargaming with a roguelike deck battler that's a great push and pull game play. And I like the stupid TV Show setting.
CATO: Buttered Cat
8
Buttered toast meets cat in this fun "two character, one player" puzzle game -- I played this before it was released... it's "Overwhelming Positive" now on Steam post release. Just try it already.
Rubinite
9
Great boss rush title, lots of "eye" gore and goopy sound effects -- yes, it's another pixel horror souls-like in the year of our lord 2024... but seriously this one vibes and everything is done very well. Combat feels fair and the dodge mechanic that builds into bonus damage is perfect.
Keep Driving
9
Modern (aka 1990s UK?) Oregon Trail; a young person, their junker, and a quest! -- In an era of grimdark roguelikes, why not have one that's hipster road trip? Instead of fighting liches and dragons, you're fighting pot holes, traffic jams, and the urge to fall asleep. Also, don't drink and drive, no matter how much your hitchhiking lady friend wants you too...
Gori: Cuddly Carnage
9
Devil May Cry, but it’s a cat on a hoverboard murdering undead unicorns -- I originally ignored this, getting the same stupid vibes as Lollipop Chainsaw... but no, this game nails its tone and gameplay where the other does not. It's a load of fun!
Banquet for Fools
9
Real-time, Mandatory Pause CRPG set in grim custom setting; will watch with interest -- If you need LORE this game has it, with a unique world, races, and monsters. And you read that right, Real-time with Mandatory Pause... I actually like it. I didn't get deep into it but new this one would be a "wait for v1.0" for me.

So there you have it. We've got two months left in 2024 and I'm at 529 demos played for the year. Tracking them has been fun and will definitely keep my log of demos and games I play or try. It's been helpful when something gets mentioned and I can dig back into my records to see my initial thoughts.

Been giving lots of feedback to indie devs, as well. If it's not ignored, most have responded positively to my feedback and have gotten direct changes into several titles (for the better, IMO).

To wrap up, here's the raw data...

Haha I forgot Sin Slayers in my library was already classified under Bad Games so I had to retake my picture showing ownership. I do hope they did some overhaul with the game because I remember it being undercooked.

I also didn't hate Battle Train honestly. I just thought the gameplay was just alright. It kind of reminded me of Advanced wars except for laying tracks and using cards to do damage and such. It was super unique though.

EDIT - That's the other thing: games often now take so long to make (i.e. often 5-10+ years), it might take a few years before you see the market maybe explode with more Larian-BG3 wannabe's.
sorry I don't have enough video RAM to answer that.

Ok then, The Bureau: XCOM Declassified wasn't much different than ME1.

The Bureau was solid and all - but it wasn't even close to the greatness of ME Trilogy (with all DLC's)/ME: Legendary Edition.

EDIT - Bureau also doesn't do the CYOA decisions thing anywhere to the level of ME. BioWare's constantly giving the player those kind of decisions & they often do matter, throughout most of ME1-3.

Okay, then Escape From the Carnival of Horrors wasn’t much different from ME1.

The Brotato update once again reminds me how much I've always hated the fact that Steam doesn't allow DLC to have its own achievements and adding new achievements for DLC ruins previously perfect achievement completion games.

Steam (and all games) should have separate Trophies/Achievement Sets. Like one for Single-Player, one for Multi-Player (if games support both type of modes).

Same with DLC's too and expansions.

And special Diamond Trophies for those that do it all - every single achievement ever for the game, across everything there - SP, MP, DLC's, etc.

Totally agree but I can't even remember the last time Steam updated anything at all with achievements sadly and we all know what little priority the client and other functionality of the store has always been to Valve.
