Trying to get cutting edge tech on launch day is always a losing proposition. Especially now with the rampant spread of bots and flippers.
While I agree with that there are still the conditions like limited stock and such going on right now in play that are large mitigating circumstances.

wait, are you saying the bots and flippers are mutually exclusive? that the bots are independently purchasing 3080's in an attempt to construct a massive supercomputer that will take over the world and enslave humanity? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

*runs out of room screaming*
Obviously it was a certain laboratory mice duo. Narf!

To bring this thread back on topic, I made some "bacon and broccoli with hot sauce" pizza for dinner.

Can we donate dogecoin to them somewhere to hasten the arrival of the robot apocalypse?

Does Microsoft Flight Simulator have an actual game attached to it ... I’ve tried 3 times to play it since release and each time there’s a massive download. If I squint the progress bar sort of looks like a plane moving across the screen.

Today's itch.io deep dive is Dr. Trolley's Problem.  The "trolley problem", in case you're unaware, is a hypothetical ethical dilemma where you see a trolley heading towards five people on the track.  You can throw a switch to make the trolley switch tracks but then it'll hit one person.  Do you actively kill one person to save five or allow five people to die through your inaction?  This game is basically a bunch of variants on the same theme: Push a man onto the track to save five?  Allow the trolley to kill a cheerleader or switch tracks and kill a firefighter?  Should it hit a burglar or a businessman who'll lay off hundreds of people?  After each time, the game tells you what percentage of people did what although I don't know if it records your choices, uses data from some other survey or just makes shit up.  Colorful indie graphics although the blocky cartoonish people sort of undercut the pathos of choosing between young teenage punk or elderly kind grandmother.

I did some back of the envelope math and determined that I'm about 7.5% of the way through the itch.io Racial Justice bundle, counting only actual Windows games (no asset packs, sound tracks, tabletop RPGs, etc).  Technically a little further since I'll be skipping any Visual Novels from here on out -- I don't like them, I haven't found one that comes close to changing that opinion and I have nothing worthwhile to say about them since I find them uniformly boring.  I think the itch.io bundle ones are all "All Ages" versions anyway so I don't even get cartoon boobs out of it.

I stopped going through my bundle mainly because I'm like oh yeah I have a Steam/PS4/etc... backlog. Also doesn't help I bought Gamepass to play Streets of Rage 4 (worth it on the pass) and now I have to try out like 6 other games on there.

I saw a show where they killed all 6 XD

I'm sort of the opposite. When I look through my Steam backlog, I feel like I should be finding some quality game I spent $30 on six years ago and get my money's worth out of it. Going through the itch.io bundle, everything is equally valuable when pulled out of a hat and that value is so low that I can casually toss games aside after 15 minutes if it's not holding my attention. And sometimes I actually find a fun game besides the handful that all the articles were gushing over when the bundle came out.

Also, if I WAS to pick at random, much of my Steam backlog is filled with cash-grab garbage from publishers who would put out awful games just to cash in on cards. A lot of the itch.io stuff is garbage, of course, but it tends to be a failed labor of love rather than a cynical attempt to work the system, a half-penny at a time.

All six visual novels, I hope.

Well, that's a loaded question. It depends on what you call a game.

From what I've been reading, the gamey parts involve flying over various parts of the world that used to exist like south Florida, California, and Oregon and daydreaming about what that world was like.

I heard that half the US isn't on fire in the game - unrealistic!

Did any of you guys see the mini-controversy about the Kotaku review of Flight Sim? Where the reviewer spent the whole review complaining that some mine was not actually in the game and that made the game bad and then people in the comments pointed out to him that he flew to the wrong place and the mine was actually in the game?

To be honest, Kotaku has grown more and more intolerable over the past few years. I’m a moderate Dem and most days I just can’t deal with Kotaku’s content.

No. This is one of those things that makes me sad about the internet. I read the first few paragraphs of that article, which seemed interminable like many Kotaku articles, and I got the sense that it was frankly about everything except whether Flight Simulator is a good game. Like the reddit guy, I'm perfectly fine with people writing articles like this, but they really shouldn't pretend they're game reviewers at that point. This is more of a cultural and sociopolitical commentary than a game review. And I'm not sure I'd put a lot of stock in the opinion of a person who candidly admits that his 41 flights in this game ended "in disaster." That looks suspiciously like you wrote a non-review because you're actually terrible at this game. While I'm not saying I'd do any better, and I probably wouldn't, that suggests that you're probably not even the target audience for this particular bit o' software.

I'm a socialist democrat and I stopped going to Kotaku a long time ago. The nail in the coffin for me was how poorly they handled the whole Night of the Woods controversy.

The min/recommended specs for Cyberpunk 2077 were announced during Episode 3 of Night City Wire:

All 6 people. They had to somewhat work to hit all of them in one go. It was a good laugh.

I don't understand this mentality. One of the most anticipated games of the year just released specs suggesting that it will run very well on a GTX series card--and not even a top-of-the-line one at that. Who are these people clamoring to spend thousands of dollars on pointless bleeding-edge tech?

I'd say it's stupid to spend thousands of dollars on it. I think it's reasonable to spend $700 MSRP on it if it's something in your discretionary budget. It has very nice gains over previous generations and a lot of current games can make good use of it. Also, I assume those Cyberpunk specs are for playing at 1080 and running it at 4K Ultra Super OMG settings will take a lot better than a GTX 1060.

I believe that the settings and performance for CP2077 are going to run the gamut. There is going to be a ton of RTX implementation and it's going to look excellent. Which should make gamers happy across the spectrum that they can run it well at either 'low' or 'ultra' settings.

If I'm remembering correctly, CDPR is pretty anal about optimization and their games playing well even on potato grade system configurations, based on all the Witcher 3 tinkering/patching they did post launch. If recommended produces at least 60fps High 1080p, I'll personally be content.

I can appreciate wanting all the bells and whistles that new GPU's offer, but fuck paying $100 to $300 over retail for a card. That dude who created the inflation bid botting is doing the Lord's work.

We’re still trying to max out Ark 😜

I kinda get what you're saying, but the thing I've never understood about this idea (and I agree that if you just have lots of money floating around and want to blow it on something--you do you) is that no game coming out in the next 2-3 years is likely to be able to take advantage of the hardware in one of these 3000-series cards. There are many, relatively-recent games out now for which a mid- to high-end 2000-series appears to be overkill. Yes, some of this probably does depend on whether you're trying to game in 8K or something. . . but is anyone doing that?

For certain values of "take advantage". Being able to double your frame rate on your 144hz monitor is pretty nice. Probably not really worth it at 1080p but noticable at 1440p or 4k. It's an enthusiast level card and needs an enthusiast level display to see a worthwhile difference.

VR on a high resolution headset without re-projection. It's worth all the dollars.

Betcha those itch.io games look real enthusiast at 144hz at 1440p.

That's a pretty epic violation of the ToS of eBay. It's awesome, but probably also a good way to get banned from eBay if they can trace it back.

I'm pretty sure eBay wants their cut of those GPU prices when they sell.
I've no doubts said dude has made burner ebay accounts or similar.

Fair enough. I'm probably just not in the target demographic for these cards.

Is a 3080 even able to max that out?

Some games just no matter what, are poorly coded, poorly optimized, and/or have an engine that is just not built for the newer cards to take advantage of.

Does ARK even support DLSS 1.0 or 2.0? Or does it plan to support it?

I can't wait for Cyberpunk 2077. Haven't been this excited about playing a new video game in a very long time.
My only (very minor) concerns are the driving and melee. Based on the footage, cars seems floaty/unweildy, akin to GTAIV but without the over the top physics excuses of that game and melee in First Person is rarely satisfying, imho. It's either too stiff or flailing, with no improvisational attributes. That sweet middle ground might be something closer to the analog combat option in Dead Island, but just suck less.

People render tech demos in many currently-in-use game engines on server farms for hours or even days. There are plenty of games that will never be "maxed out" in the foreseeable future, because they can already take advantage of flops of graphics processing power that we may never see in consumer desktop cards.

It's true there will be some features introduced in graphics cards that are specialized and require rewriting the engine to take advantage of, but even then, that's often done at an engine level and then we can see them rapidly introduced into major titles with patches.

I'm quite certain, with the appropriate display to back it up, people will have no trouble taking advantage of their 3080s.

According to the text... the bot itself makes new burner accounts.

The guy probably doesn't care if he has an ebay account and likely uses VPNs and stuff anyways to try to prevent ebay from IP banning.

Because that's what you do!

Displays over 1080p make up less than 12% of the gamer population (per Steam's hardware survey) so this really isn't a card for basically 90% of gamers. I think you just hear a lot of noise about it because it really is a nice jump if you skipped the 2000 series cards and because it's unlikely that AMD is going to match it so people who are interested don't feel the need to wait until mid-October to see what AMD releases.

The steam hardware survey is a weak point of reference anyways.  That could be anybody with Steam installed on any old wanker laptop.

The weird thing to me is the sentiment of "Raytracing and DLSS aren't a thing because I don't care (or don't follow any tech news)".

People on this very board were playing Metro Exodus over one year ago. I stopped playing Battlefield V over one year ago.  I've saved playing Control specifically for RTX.  New support keeps coming out and these technologies are now hitting their stride.  It's actually becoming one of the AAA standards going forward.  Hell, it is coming to WoW, Minecraft, and Fortnite this year.

Quake II looks awesome with ray tracing for instance.
