You're ridiculous man. I really appreciate it though, I owe you one.

I've heard that ESO will be a total Secret World killer. True story.
I've Beta tested both (when there were no NDA's on both - so "yay", I can talk about their Betas) and I had somewhere around 10 hours on both Betas, give or take.

If we're comparing Betas...IMHO, TSW was the better Beta, BY FAR in just about EVERY regard - voice-acting; storytelling; prose; dialogue; and graphics quality.

I can't compare the released products for TSW vs. ESO b/c - well, I don't have ESO. I only have TSW - and yes, TSW is really good, IMHO.

I hope ESO gotten better, for their own sake - but, I don't know if in that 2-3 weeks they can overhaul everything so quickly to get it into a much better state. Of course, who knows how old that ESO Beta-build was that they let us play. Sure, I expect bug-fixing - but, that wasn't my main problem w/ ESO. My problem from the ESO Beta was...it was mediocre at best and often boring.

They're almost as good as MapleStory.

true PC gamer ≠ ideal image of PC gamer

Thank God.
Yes, I'm definitely a "true PC gamer" - sticking to my "PC gaming only" guns since after the original PSX. I'm all about PC gaming - period. I live, breathe, eat, drink, and sleep PC gaming.

I'm definitely NOT the ideal "PC gamer" - that's namely b/c I don't often go out to gaming shows and conventions like PAX or anything like that. I'm definitely NOT a social butterfly by any means. In an ideal world - yeah, I'd be a social butterfly.

But, you could also make a debate I'm not entirely a "true gamer." A "true gamer" would likely spend the $ and have Microsoft consoles (XBox+X360+XB1) for their exclusives (Halo series, Fable series, Gears of War series, etc) + Sony consoles (PS2,3,4) for their exclusives (The Last of Us, God of War series, Demon's Souls, Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, etc).

But "screw that noise," for now - not unless I can get any of those consoles + some console games quite cheap! ;)

They just gave out 2000 Nether - Chosen steam keys and 18,000 guest keys on Joystiq, they must be desperate to expand the community. There is also an ongoing giveaway on CAG for 50 copies of the Chosen pack.
Played a bit of it tonight. It's... interesting.

For one, there does seem to be a fair bit of people playing. Just about every server has 15-30 people on it (64 is max per server), and I was playing at a very odd time (3AM HST, so 6AM on the US west coast). Perhaps the giveaways have something to do with that? Even then, it doesn't seem to be dead, even at times where more popular games are sometimes rather dead.

Loooong Nether first impressions below.

As for the game itself, hard to judge thus far. Movement doesn't feel smooth like it does in something like Skyrim, Call of Duty, etc. Jumping is very, very choppy feeling, and I even got stuck once and had to respawn (which you can only do once a day, apparently), so it's most definitely a beta.

Graphically, it looks fairly nice, though even with AA (didn't force any myself, just used what the game gives you) some things, especially in the distance, look a bit jagged. The effects and atmosphere and everything look quite nice though, so it's definitely not an ugly game. I experienced a little bit of screen tearing even with vsync, but that could be my own problem (I'm noticing that on some of my games). I didn't tweak a whole lot with the graphics, but I was getting a lot of slowdowns, and the game made my graphics card hit 90C, which is fine... but still rather high. It's not very optimized at this point in development.

Gameplay, it's a DayZ type thing. You're dropped on a map with other people, and your only purpose is to find new gear, kill zombies (okay, no zombies in this game, just mutants called Nethers), ally with players or kill them, and most of all survive. Of course just like in Dayz or WarZ, players are just gonna shoot you the second they see you, and that's a big complaint with the game that I immediately read (I'll get into my experience in a bit). Unlike DayZ, though, there's a bit more of an emphasis on crafting, which may be a good or a bad thing. When you come across stuff in the world, you'll find barrels of guns, odds and ends to tinker with, ammo, food, etc, rather than just walking into a house and finding a loaded rifle. That means... well, it means the players with guns are going to be even more annoying to the players without guns. We'll see how that goes.

As for my experience, I started off in a ruined city (I'm fairly sure 90% of the map is city), looked around through some buildings (which are really nice in this game, since you can explore just about every building, even really tall ones), and decided that getting to this little island in the water with a shining camper trailer on it (explorable objects tend to shine), I would jump from the building I was on into the water. I did, and immediately died. Not sure what happened there to be honest.

Next life (remember, this is permadeath just like DayZ), I spawned into this cool little area with an old ruined baby grand piano, a fire, and what seemed to be an old store with shelves and whatnot. Looked around for about 10 seconds before turning around and seeing a player. Shit. He starts shooting with an automatic weapon, I charge him with my knife (you always start out with a weak knife), start slashing him, he pulls out a katana and fights back, kills me in two swings (versus my 3-4 knife slashes, which are very apparently weaker than katana slashes).

Next life, I search around again, find a barrel to a big light machine gun type weapon, then I see a huge, creepy, flying thing just hanging out. I avoid it, since I'm sure it'll kill me, which suits it just fine, since it seems to be content with hovering in place... forever, never moving. Okay, fine with me. Trying to get somewhere, I decide to swim. As soon as I enter the water, I can't move, and I die a few seconds later. Apparently there is no swimming in this game.

Next life, I don't look around for long before trying to hop over a barricade. I get stuck. I have to respawn (I die).

Next life is actually very eventful. First I come across a couple ambulances that I can enter, and I find ammo, a silencer, and the barrel of a shotgun. I move on and find a camper trailer that is searchable, and as soon as I search it, bam, Nether! It's an ugly thing with a head that looks like a glowing hemorrhoid, and I ready my knife, waiting for it to charge me. It... kind of gets stuck on the terrain, although there's really nothing there to get stuck on, and glitches out for a few seconds. Yes, beta. It gets unstuck and the battle is on. I'm strafing and slashing it, it's whacking me, or trying to whack me, and it gets a hit or two in while I continue slicing it up. Every hit or two I deliver to it, though, it teleports and disappears, usually appearing to my sides or behind me before attacking again. I've heard people complain about the "whack-a-mole" battles with these guys, but it was a pretty cool battle nonetheless, and nothing like the horrifically laughable melee combat in WarZ. Finally I'm able to finish it off, and it falls to the ground in pieces. I'm able to harvest its ribs, bones, and skin (these have purposes in trading and crafting). Satisfied with my haul, and slightly injured (700 of 1000 hp), I head towards the nearest safe zone, cautious of players camping at the entrance with rifles (something I read that is common). Thankfully the entrance is clear, and I find pain pills on the way back and bring myself back to full health.

In the safe zone I was able to do a few little tutorial missions, get a free gun (a terrible gun, but a gun regardless), some extra cash, stash my items away in storage, and even join a group (which I have no idea about). I found a few players in the safe zone, but they kept to themselves, and I have no idea how chat works in this game (I saw no chat text during my entire session). In the safe zone I was able to ascertain that there are actually happenings and missions across the map if you hunt them out, such as escort missions, Nether surges, and supply drops. Nice addition, since games similar to Nether are pretty much devoid of life besides random enemies and players shooting each other.

One last thing to note is that there are experience points and skills to level up in Nether, which add a bit more depth to things (I leveled up my melee and strength, and got perks that allowed me to block and to have better hipfire stability). Of course, if you die... you're back to level one.

All in all, not a bad first impression. It's definitely messy and I found myself wishing the overall feel of movement was cleaner as opposed the glitchy floaty feel it has now, but the idea of the game is good and I can already see it doing things better than its brethren of the DayZ survival genre. It's bitten off quite a lot... we'll see if it can chew it in the end.

If any other CAGs have it now and wanna try teaming up sometime, just message me on Steam (same name there, if you don't already have me).

Hmmmm, Joystiq you say? I really should expand where I check for stuff. I saw Carlmundo play Nether once and it looked interesting enough for me to want to check it out.

I don't understand these pictures. The "ideal gamer" is playing some Xbox FPS about shooting curtains, while the "true gamer" doesn't seem to have any games but probably can rob a Software Etc. with all those guns.

Maybe she's (supposedly) "ideal" b/c she is a girl...

So, how many girls you know actually are into video-games? :p

"Bleh" @ she ain't playing some games on her PC, though.

Dating a girl who sometimes plays games isn't the fantasy many people dream of. Today my girlfriend stole the controller from me while I played Type:Rider and played the whole Futura level without me. She didn't even find the hidden ampersand so I had to redo that section!

Girls dont even play games brah. They just pretend to, have u ever seen a girl play a game on twitch? lol. true pc gamer plays Titanfall

In contrast, my boyfriend expects me to play some support character/class. Not a chance :shame:

We can't even play League of Legends together, at least not in the same lane.

dump her. nothing like a backseat gamer to ruin the fun

Just wanted to say that Guacamelee is such a great game. Finally beat it today  :D/ A big recommendation for those that haven't played it yet and love Metroidvania games.

It was payback for cheating in Disco Dodgeball.

My ex used to come to my house only to play Ocarina of Time. I wound up getting really mad about it and banned her from the N64. Then we broke up.
