Stop GameStop

Nice Idea I suppose, aside from the potential free assistance for gs locating their biggest competitors by region.

I heard there was a cool place in Baltimore that used to be called Planet Replay ( or Pre Played, something ) and I'm going down there soon to turn in all of my games and run before it gets baught out by the GS. A guys wife went down there and turned in around 8 or so N64 games ( none of them particularly good, like power rangers and hey you pikachu and stuff) and got 40 bucks.

Cool, however the best way to get the most out of your used games is to trade them at a site such as www.gametz.com or CAG, shipping will typically run you $2.50, so it's like $2.50 plus an even trade every time.

Also, fight the man.

A meaningless effort, but I still despise Starbucks-- I mean, Gamestop.

Added two game stores for the Memphis, TN area.

I like the concept but don't think it will help much. Anytime I go to a mall and it's somewhat crowded, the EB and Gamestop stores are jammed pack. Most people like shopping there despite the issues those stores have.

Other than the occasional clearance deal or markdown they have online, I haven't made a purchase in store at EB or Gamestop in at least a year and a half and have no plans to buy anything there. I don't buy used games except for imports and their new prices are horrible so there is no reason for me to buy anything there.

I would KILL for a gamestop to be in my town. There is literally no way to buy video games where im at unless it's on the internets

This kind of reminds me of BadAmsouth.com or BadRegions.com. Sure.. Amsouth is an evil bank.. and sure, they've taken 70% control of Regions bank.. In the end, the corporate "man" will sick his lawyers on you, and most of the traffic will be from disgruntled employees :)

However.. shit, I'm glad somebody had the balls to buy the domain and do something with it. Viva la resistance!!

Most people who are in the mal herel just go in there to look around because well, they are in the mall and kids get bored.

Whenever I'm in the mall and look in, it's always teenagers and goths looking around... the store is packed, but no one is at the register buying anything, it's just kids goofing off.

And for all you people who love EB / GS or want an EB / GS, enjoy paying a $5 premium on most DS games... I wonder how long before EB / GS just start charging $5 more for all their games? Amazon is a much better alternative... free shipping to boot.

I barely buy games from Gamestop in the first place, I only use it for the titles I want to get on the day of launch and don't mind paying MSRP. I did go to the store locator but it didn't have any listings for Florida. Not-a-one. Seems a bit underdevloped at the moment.

Anyways I make it a strong policy not to trade in games at Gamestop for obvious reasons. eBay and fellow CAGers give me more Bang for my Buck.

Florida's only non Gamestop game store was Rhino, and they already got bought out... so yea, other game stores in Florida are now far and very far between. I only know of one local store here and well, it's garbage. I think all we have in Tampa Bay is EB / GS and Gamerush (also garbage).

Thanks to everyone who has submitted stores so far.

While I do realize that the goal of "stopping" GameStop is impossible, I just wanted to provide a resource for people, who like myself, don't choose shop with GameStop any longer. Amazon and Ebay and the like are great, but I like to go into a store, and physically see the item I'm purchasing if I can. After the local Rhino was converted over, I found myself searching the internet for more stores, and hence the site was created. Thanks again for the help and feedback.

You're automatically assuming that an independent store is going to be better for the customer which simply isn't the case. There's plenty of independent stores I've been to that have the absolute shittiest trade-in values and used prices I've ever seen.

I know of a little game store in Miami, but it's in a really bad neighborhood. I think the place has been robbed several times. They have good little deal on SNES games, but I already cleaned em' out of their good stuff.

Plus when I was high school I worked at a "Gamers" video game store, and we had a couple stores in mid Florida. But the owner packed up and went to Altanta. But when it was open we were mall based, and the EB down the hall hated us, and were infact competing in prices, which is the way it should be.

I agree, which is why you can rate the stores and comment on them. Some local stores suck, some GameStop's are great. But on the whole, I feel GameStop has crossed the line, at least with me.

A few years ago I would have welcomed a Gamestop just for the simple fact that all I have is Wal-Mart or K-Mart. Now we have a local chain (RePlay Games) and a Gamestop is going to open shortly. RePlay will still be getting most of my business. I really can't stand Gamestop Online at all. and RePlay will still be closer to me.

A new franchise is starting up in Florida called Play-N-Trade. They have a store as far south as Naples and they're looking more or less to compete directly with Gamestop. I fucking hate Gamestop so I fully support this action, though I would prefer a non corporate alternative.

I don't know what the problem is with some of you..Gamestop might not be the best place to buy new games [unless there's some insanely cool pre order bonus] but for older stuff, they make so much sense: here's just a few deals [without more card discount included] that I've picked up at Gamestop off the top of my head

Sony Component cables $7.99
Xbox 360 HD Component Cables $11.99
Sony DVD Remote $2.99
Zone of the Enders $3.99
Beyond Good and Evil Gamecube $8.99
Wave Race Blue Storm $3.99
Xenosaga Episode II guide $0.01
Street Fighter Alpha Anthology [only place that had it at release, $29.99]
Pump It Up Bundle $19.99 [PS2]
Nintendo DS Lite leather case pink $3.99
Sonic Heroes [PC] $1.99
Dragon Quest Slime Controller $14.99
Wireless Pink Controller $12.99

And yeah, I've seen people getting ripped off while I take advantage of all their promos, deals, and coupons, but THAT'S THE CASE IN EVERY STORE, NOT EVERYONE'S A CAG, AND NOT EVERYONE HAS SOME COMMON SENSE AND SHOPPING ABILITIES. The truth is, they let me buy used games and if I hate it or it's not working well, I can get my money back no questions asked. And as for impulse buys, the employees I have talked with are generally intelligent enough to know what's up, kindly describing the differences between both Pokemon Mystery Dungeons, or admitting buying NBA Live 05 for $4 is a lot more worth it than buying 06 for $17

So I don't understand the hate for GS, but quite onestly I don't understand the hate for Wal-Mart, or the hate for Circuit City, or the hate for Sony. Get involved in politics or religion or community service if you want something to "fight for"...wasting your time trying to ruin a corporation for no real reason other than personal preference is just stupid.

Naples... they need to open a store somewhere in Tampa Bay and then I'll care. Naples is too far to drive on daily basis.

This market is now just a huge untapped market in a big city controlled entirely by EB / GS.

[quote name='sarausagi'] Get involved in politics or religion or community service if you want something to "fight for"...[/quote]

this is community service imo. while i don't share the love of gamestop on the level that you do, i realize their purpose. they appeal to a mass market. kinda like the generic video game store for the masses. grandmas (non CAG grandmas) want to get their kid a game, so they look up video games in the phone book and see gamestop. they go there and make their purchase and pay $5 over msrp and are happy. kids (with no common sense) take their old games that mom and dad got them a year or so ago, make a trade (usually getting raped) and walk out with a new game or credit. they are just happy that there was no real moneys involved with the transaction.

personally, i don't want gamestops to die even though i've never bought any games from the place. i might start doing business with them if they would get a little closer to having an acceptable price point on trades and purchases.

I only shop from gamestop when the have the B2G1 on used games. Other than that, not that good of a store. But don't act like GS is where the bad prices started, when the stores were Babbages, Software etc, and Funcoland the stores were still a rip off.

I dunno - I still have a fair amount of EB credit, all obtained at a profit from trade-ins. If they are running a promo (like $10 extra for 3 games) and you know what you are doing (and get some help from CAG) you can make out pretty well.

I'm all for competition though. Most of my credit building has been via playing off EB and GR against each other (nothing nefarious - just, for example, getting cheap clearance games at GR and trading those to EB).

We had one of those local "mom-n-pop" stores in my little town. I peered through the window one day and the selection looked pathetic. I didn't even want to ask about trade-in prices. Good thing I didn't build up any credit as they are now gone . It would be great if a place like that could stay in business, but I just had a feeling from the appearance/location/selection that I shouldn't get involved (and thus the reason GS is able to be so dominant is apparent).

It is just too bad that Gamecrazy and Gamerush can't seem to "get over the hump" and *really* compete with EB/GS. They both have some inherent advantages but both are doing poorly and have stopped expanded (and may, in fact, be contracting). They have the advantage of the rental business to drive people to the stores to buy/preorder/whatever. They also have better (ie, longer) hours than most EB/GS stores. They both already give better trade-in prices. For whatever reason, they just can't keep up.

There is an independent chain here in Minnesota and western Wisconsin called Toyriffic. It's a gamer's paradise in there. Name it, they have it. All those Sega Saturn RPGs, Super Nes RPGs, all sit in the glass counter mostly mint and complete. There's just one problem. Their trade-in values exceed GS/EB by a few bucks only and their price structure is, well, how can I say this nicely, just fucking so fucked up there's not a day in fucking hell I'll ever buy anything there and why the fuck would people fucking to there in the fuck first place!

Mario Kart 64 = $39.99 (suck my nut). I actually want them destroyed by GS/EB.

Prepare to be disappointed. They have new games for $1 cheaper than retail, but their used prices suck compared to EB/GS.

I hate them as much as the next person, but they are the lowest retail prices on used games.

It is fun to go there as a video game museum though. Actually buy anything? fuck that, Ebay's cheaper.

For every one nerd who boycotts GameStop, there are 5 nerds who rush over there to pre-order *PS2 RPG #96* because they want the bonus limited edition figurine.

Jesus, I'd love to see if a chick would still actually still fuck a man after she's seen a anime figurine collection.

If it was all Bebop, Champloo, and Gundam: no

If it has any of my favorite anime: yes

If it has anything from fighting games: yes

If it had Sailor Moon sets from the mid 90's: fuck yes! anything he wants!

On a side note, that is one hardcore jesus, where did you get that picture?

The trick is to preorder, get the game, get the bonus, return the game, keep the bonus. The bonus never shows up on the receipt so there is nothing they can do.

Or just have someone you know grab an extra.

What is everyone's idea of good trade in and used prices? I mean aren't these stores in buisness to make as much profit as possible? Does anyone complain you make to much money at your job. Does anyone say your buisness rapes people? How much does wal-mart the largest game seller in the nation give on trade? How much garbage inventory do you see at a gamestop? Gamestop and other retailers that deal in used games make as much as they can because for every used game they sell at a huge profit pays for all those games that sit there and don't sell. You will almost always make more money selling your used games your self, just like selling your used car rather than trading it in. It won't matter in a few years everything will be digital distirbution and there will not be anymore trades or used games.

Generally I dont shop at Gamestop but I acknowledge that they are a necessary evil sometimes. They have some rare, hard to find games in the used section.

With as much focus as Gamestop has on preorders, you know that a manager or someone would catch on to that eventually. Of course every Gamestop employee is different with regards to their level of hating the place so you could possibly get away with it in some areas.

Yea I'm with you on this one. I'm not a big fan of the place, but if they have a game I want I'll go there from time to time. This whole website business is kinda funny though. If you don't like em, don't shop there. No better way to make your point than with your wallet.

Bookmans.

It's not a new franchise, but like CocheseUGA said, prepare to be disappointed. They opened up one here in Augusta and the place is terrible. They offer a "membership" that is $15. I have no idea however what this membership entitles you to, since they don't rent games. The new game prices are exactly $1 below the regular retail (48.99/58.99). The used game selection is no where near as comprehensive as Gamestop/EB, and the prices are rather high. My friends and I are taking bets as to when this local store is going to close. They opened about 6 weeks ago and we're betting they will be gone by April. NOBODY is ever in there.

Man, I checked out a Bookmans in Tucson when I was there last time. It had a pathetic selection of PS2/GC/Xbox games and they were in terrible shape and overpriced. They did have a nice selection of older stuff (NES, Genesis, SNES, etc) if you are looking for any of that. But very high prices on that stuff as well.

A dude with Sailor Moon sets would probably want you to do his nails, don't expect anything more than that.

Really? Prices must have went up last time I lived in Arizona (a year or 2 ago). I got a lot of great games there at great prices.

Well, it was about a year ago that I was there. I'll check it out next time I'm there and see how it is now. They just seemed overpriced compared to EB/GS and GR. And like I said, nearly all the games were in horrible shape (dirty cases, ripped inserts, etc).

Of course, it is entirely possible that all the great games in good condition with great prices were bought up just before I went in and all that was left were the crappy, dirty, overpriced ones ;).

No, it's still pretty crappy. The selection isn't all that great for GC/Xbox/PS2... and a little overpriced as well.

The oldschool stuff is great, a very nice selection, but again a bit overpriced. I think they sell Super Mario Bros. for about $4.00.

I went to gamestop a couple days ago and it was so sad the way the guy was riding my ass to preorder God of War 2. I thought he was going to cry. I don't believe that game will "run out" its probably one of the biggest PS2 titles, it will be everywhere. I felt sorry for the guy.

The other guy working there was such a loser. He was showing off his sales numbers on the phone to some other gamestop guy.

I bought a used game and for the first time in a LONG time it actually worked.

I've never had a problem with the big gaming stores. I have an EB close to my home, and the guys in their are great. Bunch of great guys that are friendly, and take care of business. So whatever man.

I think one thing were forgetting is that when we go into a store and an employee pushes us to buy more. Thats not the employee's choice that employee is just trying to pay the bills. He's begging you to pre-order something so his/her boss will get of their ass. Remember if you have a problem with a store talk to corporate about it. Bitching about something won't fix anything. Talk to corporate you may not get the answer you want. But the point is you got your point across.
