Street Fighter IV PS3 Official Discussion Thread

Count me in for the PS3 tournament next month. That will give me something to practice a little more for.

Also, I have been using Sagat and Blanka for a while now, and I don't think I'm bad with either one of them. I'm not incredible either, but the question I have is that I have had an incredible amount of trouble beating Ryu and Akuma (I actually don't think I have ever beaten a Ryu). Can someone recommend another character I could work on developing with that would work well against these two? Much appreciated.

Hey send me an invite on PSN ill show you how to take out akumas and ryus with blanka. He's awesome for them. The main things you want to watch out for/do:

When fighting akuma, start the match off with a rolling attack, hold back the whole time it says round 1 until right after it says "fight" then hit forward+HP. Because almost 99% of the time akumas will start off by jumping back and throwing a hadoken in the air. The backstep roll will smash them when they come back down and put you right in their face.

The next thing to do is to avoid ground hadokens hold down/forward and hit HP
tis will slide underneath the fireball and trip the opponent. Block right after you do this and watch to see if they do a shoryuken (they probably will) when they are in the air doing that start tapping punches and electrocute them when they fall. rinse and repeat.
Sometimes instead of shuryken they will simply try to sweep you. When they do that just back up a couple steps and do a backstep roll or hold crouch/back and wait for a hadoken then do another HP slide.

Sometimes when fighting ryu or ken, I will start the match off with electricity because half the itme they jump right into it going for a whirlwind kick, jump kick, or shoryuken. Another good thing to note is that blankas EX rolling attack will go through fireballs. So if you are across the screen a good way to close the gap and get a hit is to wait for them to hadoken/tiger shot and then EX roll atack through it and smash them closing the gap.

Thanks for the tips. I will shoot you a PSN invite next time I log on. It probably won't be until tomorrow afternoon because I have to study for my Sociology exam tonight.

My thumb is exhausted from ~3 days of relatively heavy playing. But when using Balrog 90% of the time, and all those charge moves, I seriously couldn't pull off any of his moves.

Makes me want an arcade stick even more. :whistle2:(

Do it, it's sooo worth it. Not to mention there's plenty of other fighters coming out starting this summer. Pick out a nice one for yourself.

Yeah, I've been using a controller all my life to play Street Fighter so I'm on the edge too about getting an arcade stick since I've never used one before. :whistle2:k

Similar situation here, switched to an arcade stick and haven't looked back since.

Looks like I'm throwing down 80 dollars for an arcade stick then.

I tried using my HRAP3 with SF4 and I think I'm actually better with the controller. Not sure if it's worth it to retrain myself on a stick. This is after playing SF mainly on consoles since the SNES.

It's the complete opposite for SC/Tekken, though. When I try switching to a controller for those it's like I forgot all my moves.

-got the 301 wins last night. now I gotta hit the 506 win mark to get the last title and icon I can get from just fighting. still need around 50 more matches for the 500 matches trophy. looks like I a will linger around the 66-70 percent victories online for my sf4 career. lol

-4 more time trials and 2 more survival trials left to get the gold trophy.

-plus a whole heap of move challenges. lol

I am going to get the platinuim

Craziness -- Capcom should make a special banner for your signature in honor of such a feat.

Good luck, and pass on some of your skillz 2 me!

I'd be up for a couple of games of SCIV, never played an online match in it before. Beware the fury of my button mashing methods in Soulcalibur though.

Oh... just press Forward + Guard, Back + Guard or Down-Forward + Guard right before you get hit. You won't take any damage and it will leave your enemy vulnerable for a few seconds. You'll know you did it right when you see a clash like animation... actually, you should know without me telling you, it's that obvious.

Hit me up sometime on PSN, I have every fighting games for the PS3 both disc and digital. Send me a friend request and we can have some fun sometime. I admit it, when I play fighting games I like messing around and try new stuff. Much more fun that way, so if you're ever up for some laid back matches, hit me up. If you want some competitive then that's fine too, but usually boring.

Manhands coming to get you! :)

Good games last night, I'm sure you just need to get up to speed with SF4. I kinda wish I still had SC4 now that I have a stick, so I can suck it up again at that game. :p

has anyone tried using an x arcade stick with a ps2-ps3 adapter? i have a double stick and haven't even though about using it on sf4 til about an hour and a half ago...haven't found anyone else who has tried this.

HowStern, I gotta thank you for the Blanka tips. I am amazed how many guys do the exact same thing off the start and I get them every time, and I have been more successful against Ryu, Ken and Akuma. Also, I have found that the floor slide punch works well off the back when they begin with a fireball or shoryuken. Anyway, thanks again.

It is so sad, I got my 500 win title a week ago. How time flies... My win percentage is quite dismal though, it is in the high 50s, but I blame that on me dicking around with Abel and Fuerte recently and my love affair with Viper when I first got the game.

Good luck on your quest for the plat though, the challenges will surely break you. :)

Awesome,man glad to hear it!

It's funny because the one person I have a ton of trouble beating as Blanka is Blanka. I always lose my patience and go in for rolling attacks thinking "maybe they will stop blocking" and then I get blocked and countered.
I need to invest more time in some other characters. I've put all my time into blanka I'm terrible as everyone else.

The newest ranking charts are in. Obviously, there are going to be objections and this is purely unscientific but here they are. Unofficially compiled by Japanese players. Also, these charts will evolve and change as the game ages and new strategies are found. The chart works like this: If 2 evenly skilled players used a character and played each other 10 times how many times would each player win. For example, I pick Zangief and play against Sagat. I'm expected to win only 3 times and Sagat should win 7 times. This is done with all the characters and the wins are totalled and that's their score and they are then sorted. Keep in mind that THESE TIER CHARTS ONLY WORK AT HIGH LEVEL GAMEPLAY. So maybe your El Fuerte crushes your friends all the time but you might actually suck at a high level tournament. That said there is a fairly small spread between the tiers still. It's fairly tightly packed together with only 41 wins spread between top and bottom.

sfchart.jpg

I find some of the rankings to be kinda odd and wonder what happened and why. Initially at launch alot of the top SRK players rated Rose as the highest tier character out of all the console characters and at this list she's bottom tier. Boxer is high up but I'm quite sure will fall pretty quickly as the tournament scene goes on since he's pretty limited once you figure out his tricks. And C. Viper I see going up since she's one of the most flexible characters around.

Which brings us to an American chart

The arithmetic is WAY off on the chart (which is ironic, for reasons that will remain unmentioned).
Some matches don't add up to 10 (Eg. Cammy vs Gouken, is 4-4 WTF?)
The sum totals for each character was completely off too.
I just fixed it by taking the top half and extrapolated the bottom half from it. Here is the outcome:

1. Sagat 153(+33)

2. Balrog 140(+20)
3. Blanka 136(+16)
4. Zangief 135(+15)
5. Ryu 134(+14)
6. Seth 131(+11)

7. Chun Li 129(+9)
8. M.Bison 127(+7)
8. Rufus 127(+7)
10. Akuma 126(+6)
10. Ken 126(+6)
12. C.Viper 122(+2)
13. E.Honda 121(+1)

14. Dhalsim 120(-)
15. Guile 119(-1)
16. Gouken 118(-2)
17. Abel 117(-3)
18. El Fuerte 114(-6)
19. Fei Long 111(-9)

20. Vega 107(-13)
21. Cammy 104(-16)
21. Gen 104(-16)
23. Rose 103(-17)
24. Dan 100(-20)
25. Sakura 76(-44)
Note: American Names

This chart was compiled by Bokchoy on the SRK boards. Despite asian stereotype, the math was all off. Not everyone plays 10 matches and sum totals are off for some characters too. He (re)did some math of his own and some characters move pretty far (See Seth, Vega, Fuerte, Sakura).

So what's everyone elses thoughts? Keep in mind tier lists are always changing, dependent on the players, and even dependent on the region where you play.

arghhh at hondas 5th hard trial

connecting three c.LKs into a flying headbutt is ridiclous the LKs dont buffer into each other at all. and when i do manage to get all three the headbutt is always blocked.

I have to say the most surprising person to see low is Sakura. She really feels quite strong with her chip abilities, her low-hitting super/ultra, the solid damage from her super, her EX hurricane kick, etc...

I was also surprised to see Fei-Long as high as he is. C.Viper kind of cheaply gets her rank because there's a specific jump-in that stuffs Guile's flash kick that gives her a 6/4 instead of the 3/7 she'd have like she does with Honda.

I think the Japanese underestimate Zangief a bit. The 2-frame start up of SPD is insanity and his risk-reward on fierces is pretty crazy. He is much better at advancing than he has ever been and is really strong in this game.

Boxer is going nowhere as he has basically been great in every game. Reach+damage= Balrog.

I similarly agree that Rose is surprising since everyone was freakin' about Shamwow's ability to hit anything ever.

I think the Americans have Rufus placed more accurately as well.

Well, just hit a milestone by reaching 1,000 BP! Certainly pales in comparison to some of the pros on this board but I'm proud non-the-less. I'm glad I gave my thumb a weeks rest, as I went 5-1 tonight -- losing to an Akuma. Thumb was getting tired again and desire for buying a stick grew stronger. Bah!

As for what's up with the SF4 Championship Mode update, from EventHubs.com

Q: Have you been thinking about any fixes for the home version characters?

A: Ah yes, the patch. In the same way we fixed things when going from the arcade version to the home version, we will be performing little tweaks to fix the odd parts.

When the title update is released, for everyone who goes online this patch will download automatically.

(Azrael's Note: The question only asks about the console characters, but the person answering doesn't specify if she's only talking about the console chars or the whole game. She also says "the same way we made changes from the arcade version"...did they make changes?)

Q: We heard that Dee Jay and T. Hawk were planned for the game but didn’t make it. We’d like to see them put in.

A: Yeah huh. They were already plenty developed…! It’d be nice if we could do something to not let that go to waste, but…!!

(Azrael's Note: That sounds like a "no".)

Q: ROUND4? Is there development for a SFIV Dash?

A: That’s just language used on the SFIV posters. Since its Street Fighter IV, we just took the 4 and put it together to say ROUND4 for when the game went on sale.

(Az's Note: This is probably just promotional language for the console sale that may have confused people.)

Q: Will there be any other costumes this spring or summer?

A: We haven’t decided yet! However, it looks like there will be some sort of announcement this summer.

Q: Any chance of seeing Shin Akuma or Evil Ryu?

A: Hmm…sorry, I can’t really say anything on the matter!

Q: Please enforce some kind of penalty for disconnects.

A: In the patch, we will be adding a disconnect ratio! But since this will include disconnects for natural reasons and not just ragequits, we’re also including a bail-out feature so that if you continue playing for awhile after a disconnect without any further disconnects, your ratio will restore itself! Yay!

(Azrael's Note: The wording isn't exactly clear, but it sounds like the disconnect ratio will go down sooner rather than later.)

Q: Although you weren’t able to go on sale with the 6-button pad when the game was released, do you have any plans to sell it in the future?

A: Now, we are working hard on it. But sorry, no plans to sell it at this time.

Q: No Mac version?

A: No plans for a Mac version at this time. I also use Mac as well as Windows, so I feel your pain!

Q: We really want new alternate costumes!

A: We understand that the alts are really popular. You’ve made your voices heard. …So for now, please cut us some slack!

Q: Sorry to say this, but the quality of the anime openings and endings just wasn’t good at all.

A: The prologues and endings are probably what we regret the most in a handful of mistakes. This is definitely something we want to work on for next time.

Q: When will the PC version go on sale?

A: We will announce the release date very soon! Sorry to keep you waiting, but please wait just a little longer!

Q: For the next time, we’re expecting new characters that make us think “Ryu and Ken are fine, but this new character is cool and seems easy to use!”

A: That makes me happy to hear…! Abel really is a strong character, so I hope more people will use him.

Q; Shiozawa…yeah yeah, but Lil’ Ono seems pretty strong.

A: How rude! Well…I can’t refute that though. Not just me, but Endo is also the best! In no time at all, with just the PS3 and 360 controller he was able to unlock all characters and all color variations!

Q: Are there any extras for the PC version?

A: Basically, it’s a port of the home version, but we will be throwing in a little extra service. More details will be coming soon!

Q: For the new home characters (Cammy, Dan, etc), we’d sure like a downloadable move list.

A: Definitely! Check the downloads page very soon!

I (purposely) played online for the first time last night. I went up against two Kens, a Zangief, and a Sakura. I took out the first Ken pretty quick and he dropped. The second Ken barely beat me the first match, then I whopped him the second match and he disconnected. The Zangief was a monster... I have a hard enough time playing against the AI, let alone someone that spams his heavier moves. He beat me four times - I kept selecting different characters hoping that he'd change as well, but never did. I stopped after the fourth loss.

The Sakura was on the ranked boards and beat the tar out of me. I've got to go back to the game for some training before I try that again.

And here I was so proud of myself actually making it through the Normal Trial Mode with Cammy using my DS3.

With a DS3? Wow ... Once someone picks a main online, I doubt you'll ever face them as anyone else. I like to pick Random sometimes for the hell of it.

Maybe I played too much SF on SNES and PS1, but using the DS3 to play isn't THAT big a deal... I'm sure an arcade stick is better, yes, but using a PS3 controller isn't that terrible

Totally agree with you, as I'm getting used to the DPAD after SFIV came out.

But my thumb gets tired holding charge for Balrog all the time, a problem that wouldn't happen w/ a stick. If I mained any non-charge character, this wouldn't be an issue.

I use the ds3 also and actually it feels better to me than the ds1 and ds2 for street fighter games.

the ds3 is fine for characters with circle movements but for charge characters you will greatly benefit from using a stick. besides if I had a stick I would have finished all of the normal trials and I am still stuck on 3 characters in particular. Guile, Balrog, and Vega.

so my advice is if you can afford a stick to grab one asap. you might have to relearn a lot, but the advantages in the long run are worth it.

(coming from a ds3 user)

I was using a FightPad then moved onto a stick... I can't image playing SFIV without having all 6 attack buttons on the front of the pad.

I use the DS3 as well and the only real complaint I have with it is the R2 and L2 buttons. They feel different than the other buttons but you eventually get used to it. I considered buying one of the SF4 Fightpads but decided to opt out.
Haha. That sounds like me.
sounds like a lot of people actually. lol I like blanka myself but for some reason I only tend to use him once someone beats me with him and it frustrates me. lol. but that chart is real because blanka's ultra is outright silly in the damage it does. feels like it can take half of your life bar depending on who you are. still a funny chart, almost as funny as ken's. lol

the R2 and L2 buttons are a little suspect and in all honesty they hamper the use of the L1 button overall for me. good thing I really don't use that button that much.

Sadly enough I don't think there's really any other way to play Blanka. :p

I love it though. :)

I tried playing with a DS3 for an evening just for shits and giggles, and my thumb honestly felt like it was about to break off when playing charge characters. But sadly, I can pull off quarter circle motions so much more consistently with the pad. :(

Is it just me or has the competition against random peoples just gotten more brutal? I tried playing some randoms last night and I just got tore the fuck up. I don't know if it had anything to do with me just picking Sakura a whole bunch though, but it was just sad. I think all this time spent playing as Blanka has finally rotted my brain.

anyone wanna help me win the 10 wins in a row trophy? if you dont have this trophy, we can switch off, i win first, and you can win the next consecutive 10. i dont really care about battle points, because they're not hard to get, but 10 wins in a row is a pain.

add me drake0727 if interested.

The game's been out for close to 2 months now, I think the ratio of "skilled to complete trash" has evened out since people have had time to find a character and practice.
I haven't played SFIV in a while, I need to get into a couple of online matches soon.

Yeah people have just plain gotten better since the game has been out for a bit now.

I haven't gone online on it for a few days because everyone always disconnects. I'll go online when championship mode comes out. Or if I see a friend on.

Either that, or all the scrub players decided to give up when they weren't making any effort to actually learn the game outside of the Ken-Flow chart.
