Street Fighter IV PS3 Official Discussion Thread

Everyone,
Be careful you do not get too many perfects/ultra finishes when trying to get Akuma. I just got through everything with enough of those to actually trigger Gouken first, and if you do that before getting Akuma, neither is unlocked when you win. I'm uber pissed off right now.

Just got the game yesterday and it's addicting. Unlocked everyone and I'm going through challenge mode to unlock more costume colors and personal actions.
I'm using the PS2 15th anniversary controller to play SF IV and going back to using the DualShock's d-pad is weird, I'm horrible with the regular d-pad now.
I'm using the Tekken 5 Tenth Anniversary Stick, lol. It's an ok stick, i'm able to pull off most moves with it. Going back to ps3 dpad feels weird for me, unless I do crab style to perform EX moves.

Hey guys, my PSN ID is = Esper15

Just drop an invite anytime of day (whenever I'm on) if you want to play against my scrubby Rose :D.
anyone know how to install this in your harddrive? I feel the loading takes awhile to load at times.
Go to "Main Menu" then select "Options". From there, go to "System Settings" and select "Install" and there you go :)

Anyone just using the PS3 controller and having success with it? I'll most likely be picking this up this weekend and would like to just use the Dual Shock, but if that's unfeasible I'd be willing to pick up a stick.

I'm still using the six axis controller. It works for what it is, but like what people are saying here, it's not the best to use for this game. The way I have my buttons configured, I use my right hand a few times to press L1 and L2. It's weird but I am able to perform all the moves , but its a pain in the ass.

That's good to know. That's what I'll be using as well. Is there any input lag?

Fock...I so want this game but won't be buying a stick for another month or so. I'm really torn on whether to get it now and use the Dualshock and have to relearn everything when I get a good arcade stick or just get it and enjoy the game and the hand cramps that come with it.

There really shouldn't be any input lag using the wireless controllers. I didn't have any problems using the Dual Shock 3 with Soul Caliber and there have been sites saying that there is no input lag with the wireless SF4 fight pads/sticks.

Learning a stick doesn't take too long. I played for a couple hours with a stick and I am able to pull off most things consistently with the exception of shoto-super/ultra moves (still whiff those occassionally). And the d-pad on the Dual Shock isn't as bad as people are making it out to be. It's not ideal, but it's serviceable.

I played the original SF Alpha series on PS1 for countless hours with the regular PS1 comtroller and it was sufficient for that game. SFIV retains all the character's moves from SFII and Alpha with minimal changes. I am used to playing the six axis design style controller that Sony's been using since PS1 so its not a biggie for me. Using a tournament stick would have been amazing though.

Yea I agree. I don't using the normal controller but I feel as though I'm missing out on part of the game. I can't seem to pull off any of the cool ultra moves or anything with the regular controller. I'm looking for a fight pad but that seems to be completely pointless. When I picked up the game last night, they had two fight pads left but I didn't know for which system. I guess I will be hunting one down...

By the way, the more I play the game, the better I like it. At first I was not really all that impressed. Then after about an hour of playing, I found myself trying to pull off new moves...and then I was sucked in. Very, very, very good game, and that's coming from someone who doesn't really like or play fighting games.

It takes a while getting used to the 3D graphics, but after a short while, I started liking it. Thank Jeebus they kept the fighting style in 2D!! Anyone remember playing that SF 3D for PS1 or PS2? That was just a cry for help on Capcom lol

Oh definitely! I liked the idea of the whole "3D in a 2D environment" concept from the beginning. It gives it a refreshing feeling of old school meets new school kind of thing. It's the way I wanted something like Street Fighter to look like after all of these years.
Also, to all the fuckers who keep using Blanka online and get me in a corner, and then electrocute me to death....fuck you and the horse you rode in. That is all.
Holding block on wake-up should allow you to stop garbage like that. And once he's out of range, a nicely placed sweep should take care of it.

Honestly, i feel like SF4 is more "SFex4" than a true addition to the main series. It feels a lot different than the 2D games (particularly in the jumping, and jump attacks).

Additionally, the time-attack modes, and special "combo training" modes were something that I've always associated with EX.

Not complaining- just saying...

Thank you!!! I will try that tonight! I was really pissed off after that match too because it was like the second time I played an online opponent. I just sat there and said, "You've got to be sh*tting me" over and over again as he kept doing it. I just couldn't believe that someone was actually taking his/her own time to beat someone so cheaply. I would pull that move if the other person was better than me because that's called a strategy. Using it on a new player (I haven't played Street Fighter since SFII on the SNES and it was my second time playing online) is low class. They knew I wasn't that good because they were killing me within a second and used this move to finish me off. Oh well, I managed to win my first match online last night and then put it away lol. I was like, "Hell ya! Go out with a bang!" Very cool game.

I love this game soo much. ohvermie we have to play again now that I had a chance to really get into it and unlock a few things. Plus I got a lot of trophies last night. Got my 10 wins in a row trophy :) now everything else will just come in time. only trophy that I am worried about is getting the silver for beating it on the hardest difficulty and beating gouken. other than that everything else is possible.

I will add everyone else in this thread that I didn't add last night.

Is it possible to find online matches with green ping? I kept refreshing and only could find yellow, red, and the infamous unknown blank ping.
That's good to know. That's what I'll be using as well. Is there any input lag?
There's no input lag that I notice, I just use the PS2/PS3 converter.

I was having the same issue but honestly, I didn't notice any lag during my online play, yellow or red colors be damned. What I did notice was the load times with people who didn't install it and those who did...what a huge difference. When i play against people who install it, there's no load times...totally different story with those who didn't.

I'll be on tonight. I might try to unlock Gouken first, but not like I really care about him since I rarely play shotos anyway. :)

I really want them to bring in multi-user lobbies. It's sad seeing all these people playing SF4 on my friends list and not being able to cram them all into a lobby for massive ass kickings. :)

I haven't seen a fully green connection bar either, but it doesn't seem to matter, the online play is pretty seamless except that time I played with Desklaser and he was using wireless.

I guess when my PS3 copy arrives, we wont be playing then =P

Blanka

Epic vega match last night, that guys is a tricky, poky bugger. Won in 2 rounds but man I had to work for it.

I have a 3 game ranked winning streak right now. I almost lost a match against a very good ryu last night but our connection dropped (i think cause he was in japan). I am frozen in fear to break my streak. I really want to get a 10 ranked winning streak but I feel my Gief needs to be better. I just need to concentrate on green pimp hand and lariat pass fireballs.

Yeah, I was wondering about Blanka too. I lost to a Blanka because I could not close the distance (Blanka Balled me) then when I get close, I get electricuted. Oh I just weak jabbed the blanka ball after awhile but just couldn't close the distance.

What attacks get passed the electric attack (especially for zangief or boxer)?
I hope to learn charge characters.

Trips break electricity. But you have to be barely in range otherwise you end up trading hits.

Not sure if that applies to EX electricity (assuming you can do it because you can do EX Honda hand slaps and EX Chun kicks).

Got this game yesterday and the days i wasted in the arcades in my youth came flooding back to me. My old school honda was needs some work, but the game plays like a dream. Anyone looking for a match tonight, feel free to add me to your friend list. Psn = firearmman

Abel's Tornado Throw seems to have ridiculous priority and is really powerful for a move that's so easy to execute. If you time it and do it to a waking opponent, they're pretty much screwed unless they perform a general move counter on wakeup. Or, that's how it seems anyway, unless I'm missing something while playing as him.

Dude I had the exact same feeling. Even my dad saw me playing it and was like "Why are you playing this? Didn't you play it a long time ago?" I had to explain that this was a new version but he didn't buy it...as always....lol.

Yea Abel is a bitch. I played against him once and that was enough to convince me that if I ever wanted to commit suicide, I'll play against him instead because it's basically the same thing.

Unless someone knows otherwise, it just seems to snuff everything. It might be the same for the other command throws and one of the reasons why Zangief is top tier. The timing is a little tricky, but once that's down, the waking player pretty much has to perform a Shoryuken right away, which would leave him incredibly vulnerable were it blocked. A total guessing game there.

I beat Seth using only Tornado Throws and Ex Tornado Throws. As soon as he wakes up, I perform another one at the right time. He couldn't/wouldn't do anything about it. I guess when I play on a harder difficulty it may show me more ways to counter it.

Hmmm maybe I'll test him out then and see what goes down. I still need a fucking fight pad though...holy balls am I getting smoked.

add me to your friends list if you're in the mood for an asswhippin'!

oh, and by asswhippin' i mean you totally kicking my ass, cause i suck, but i cant stop playing.

did you guys consider the soul calibur 4 stick? or the hori 2 stick for ps3? not sure if either are any good or we should all go for the 39.99 fight pad?

Depends on if you're a stick or a pad player.

From a quality perspective, the fightpad is an awesomely designed controller, whereas the Soul Calibur 4 stick is a mediocre stick at best... so take that for what you will.

gotcha, i haven't tried the soul calibur stick, just don't feel like shelling out 150 for a tourney stick. So figured I would go with a $50ish stick or $40ish pad.....guess i will wait for a pad then.

other than that, yes, his command grab works real well.

when I first played with him in the arcade and got a little comfortable, I seriously cannot go back to Honda since Oicho feels so off compared to Abel.

picked up the game yesterday.... 9 solid hours later i could not feel my thumb!
called up my buddies from high school and we were on.... for the 1st time since high school (ok, the year AFTER we finished school) we were kicking each other's asses. too bad there is no lobby system!

also... for that ultimate bit of nostalgia, i played using this

brings back the old days with the saturn... that still works right next to my ps3!

Could it be invincible on startup? Yeah, I've been mixing in EX command throws just because they'd have to be stronger/higher priority/quicker by default. But even the normal seems like a real doozy to deal with in that scenario. Good for Abel. Bad for downed opponent.

I dont think any command throws ever have invincibility.

otherwise theyd be the most bullshit broken moves in the face of fighting games.

the strength of command throws are all in their general frame data and throw range.

And the fact that they're throws that can't be low blocked. Or tech hit. And they're powerful. And break through focus attacks.

I suppose that what you say is true about invincibility frames. But it'd be odd for a command throw to have armor properties or soak up a hit. I don't think I've seen that in SF before. Then again, I usually don't pay that much attention to grapplers.

I noticed this too last night while I was playing against him with guile. I gotta really learn the other characters because right now I can only really use ryu, ken, sakura, and sagat. I love charge characters but seth was destroying my guile.

one quick note. why is it when I am playing arcade mode and accepting challengers, they always get a match with me as soon as I am about to beat seth, but if it is a match when he beats me no one ever trys to come in?

Franky,
You're fine with the DS3 for now, but you may want to look at the fightpad eventually. If you're wanting to be hardcore, then you're looking at sticks.
Has anyone else unlocked Home unlockables while playing? I've unlocked a Dan shirt I think so far. Anyone else get anything different?
I got dan's shirt as well. I think the home rewards are linked to icons, titles, and medals.

How do you even get that far? I always get challengers 1 second into my first match. Start the round, throw 2 punches then get challenged, it's really annoying.
