Here's the Iwata asks. It goes into details of the ten tracks and interviews the creators of the music. :D Such Koji Kondo.

Terrific link, the musical commentary from Kondo is a good read. The more I think back on favorite games gone by, the more I realize how important music is to me. Even games I don't enjoy as much as others in terms of characterization or gameplay -- if they get the music right, I'm willing to forgive a lot. DKC is one of those games that I played not knowing why, and the music had a lot to do with that.

I have strange music files for old versions of winamp with certain plugins, but it would be nice to have a straight-up mp3 library of all my favorite Kondo stuff. I'll have to nose around. Thanks again for the link.

So did this end up having any kind of special Easter eggs? What about the Yoshi coins from the GBA ports? Or is this just a straight-up dump of the SNES one?

It's a 100% straight up port of the original SNES game, not even the version with Super Mario World.
Could this be a only retail Wii game that will require a classic controller? I don't see how anyone can play Super Mario World without it.
Super Mario World is not included. Everything here was made for NES, so it only requires you to flip your wiimote like an nes controller.

I would preffer a Super Mario Collection made up of ALL Mario's GAMEBOY and DS games. Ported in a similar fashion to the Wii.

This Collection is pretty lame no Super Mario World which Miyamoto is on records as saying is his Favorite.

then again it was also mine.

Until I played New Super Mario Brothers Wii, this is my favorite even more than Super Mario World. Then super mario World, then Mario 3 only because I think my dad had to kill someone to buy it back in the day for Christmas it was so hard to find. But on Dec 25th at 6am I was playing Mario 3. Thanks dad.

I agree that having Super Mario World in there would be great-It's kind of a Super Mario Bros. 4...I mean it belongs with those, and then there's an over 15 year gap to New Super Mario Bros.

I'd love SMW + the Gameboy games too :) PLUS both SNES and NES versions + how about remade versions, and the... oh you know, everything.

But I preordered this the day I found out about it! :) Just hope it comes through because Gamestop the next day acted like they were verifying my credit card, like something was weird...when I didn't even use a credit card, I used THEIR credit.

I refused to purchased this because I know that Nintendo will re-sell the same pack to us on the 3DS in 3D version.

And I already have the 3Ds pre-ordered.

Of course. I mean, they sold Super Mario All Stars on the regular DS, N64, GameCube, and Virtual Boy too. So it is simply an inevitability.

Amazon is OOS now. Could this really be a limited edition? Glad I bought 2 at $28.49 via goldbox a few days ago.

Ooooh, for a minute I thought you were serious

Anyway I hope Gamestop doesn't screw up my order ("investigating" indeed...) I'll be pissed if they screw me out of this when I could have just ordered from Amazon and gotten it for sure.

My Amazon order isn't guaranteed at this point to show up as intended. Maybe that just means they won't get as many as they thought, or maybe it means they won't get anymore. It's hard to say.

I ordered Nov 20th, still shows Dec 20-23 delivery. They have a "sign up to be notified when this becomes available" thing on it now. Does that usually mean it won't come back?

It probably means they got too many pre-orders and if they have any extra stock they'll put it back on the site.

I ordered mine at around the same time and it shows the same delivery date (in Canada, btw). It was #1 on the bestselling list for quite a few days so it's not surprising to see it "sell out". Plus, it is supposed to be limited.

While I'm sure this won't be all that difficult to acquire, this certainly nixes any thoughts of canceling it that I had.

I still have a delivery date of December 15th, by the way. Prime, obviously. Nothing indicating a delay or anything.

Damnit. I was going to preorder today since my promo credit from Epic Mickey finally showed up in my account.

I guess I'll just have to try to score it at Target or Best Buy when it comes out.

I am going to guess that Amazon's version is the exact same as any other store's version. I highly doubt Nintendo is going to make a special Amazon-only version.

That said, I think a lot of people were getting it from there because they have credit there, or are buying from Amazon to avoid the up to $3 in sales tax.

Why the fuck can't I put this game in Widescreen mode? It looks horrid on my tv. There aren't any options anywhere.

I'm going to end up having to return this because of this...

I will never pay for another version of these games again. Also, the jumping is totally broken in Super Mario Bros. and the Lost Levels in the All-Stars version. When you hit a brick as Super Mario you float through it instead of bouncing off and back to the ground again quickly. Throws off the timing everywhere. Yuck.

Yeah, I found myself having the same issue. I'll take the original Mario Bros. any day.

Overall, though, it's a nice package. I hope it truly is limited, as it makes the re-release of this cart seem more okay. It's a fan service thing, nothing more, nothing less. Also, I'm glad the back of the package makes it VERY clear that it's seriously just a port of the SNES game, so anyone that's pissed that they bought it can't really complain too much. It's not like they tried to slide one past people.

My Amazon order came in a larger box with air bubbles, and shrinkwrapped to a board. Perfect condition.

I think I'm just going to get the VC NES versions of SMB and SMB3 and call it a day... some day. I've played through SMB3 rehash on GBA, so I don't think I want to play another updated version. I need to check out the originals.

Why the fuck can't you just change the aspect ratio of your TV to 4:3 to play a 4:3 game?

I played a bit of it (albeit a small bit since I was at a friend's house, and they just wanted to see what the game was like).

The gameplay isn't horrible, although both my friend and I are amazed that both players 1 and 2 could control Mario in the Lost Levels. We basically just spent 10 minutes killing Mario off a couple times, first on accident then on purpose, because we were dumbfounded how the developers allowed that (unless I'm forgetting that was also in the original game).
Why the fuck can't you just change the aspect ratio of your TV to 4:3 to play a 4:3 game?
Why should I have to change settings on my television to play one wii game, especially since EVERY other Wii game I own is in widescreen? And that still wouldn't make it so the entire screen is used. I'd still have the black bars taking up half of my television.

How hard would it have been to include an option to at least stretch the damn screen out? This is an option in almost every single "retro" game I own on the 360 and PS3, and even on some of the SNES games I own on VC.

I see no excuse for not having this as an option.

The fact it's a straight up SNES port, which was made when there was no/very little widescreen TVs, isn't an excuse: it's the entire reason.

The game was made in 4:3 back in 1993. This port of the 1993 version *gasp* is in 4:3.

I played the original, and holy fuck is 5-4 hard. I remember years ago getting to world 8 and never beating it. I don't think I'll ever beat the original.

God damn I'm old. People actually have to say that they have played the original - hasn't every human being on the planet played the original Super Mario Bros on an NES??? :D Stick with it - the game is pure memorization of enemy patterns and it's probably the one game that I think everyone should play until they finish it.

Maybe it's because when I was in 5th grade I must have logged hundreds of hours on SMB but even to this day I can finish it without losing a life (warping). In fact, I did it as recently as Tuesday! It takes about 10 minutes - maybe less. I could probably get through all 32 levels with 2 or 3 guys and certainly without seeing a game over screen.

Would you watch a butchered version of an old movie that was originally released in 4:3 too? I guess I just don't get the argument here. It is a port of a 4:3 game so of course it is in 4:3. All you have to do is push a button on your remote. If that's really too much of an issue, then I guess sell it. It just doesn't seem like a big deal.

What crock of shit.

Seriously, the artbook, pretty much the reason why you would buy this, comes factory damaged. Mine was especially beat to hell. I've watched videos of others, a lot of them were damaged due to the use of "eco-boxes".

Calling all collectors! Limited Edition! fuck you Nintendo.

My artbook was in fine condition. I know I'm not usually that lucky. Then again, you're going to hear the people bitching about it more than those that aren't...

Then again, I'm also not one to purchase something in hopes of being able to flip it for a huge profit...

Nintendo can't even milk a port of a port. There is so much apathy on Nintendo's end bundled into this one game. If you throw in the VC titles that exist alongside it, the apathy is overwhelming.

So they tell you it's a port on the reverse cover, that's supposed to absolve them from dropping a turd? Maybe they redeemed themselves by giving the supposed collectibility a boost by putting some effort into the included materials (CD, art book)? Wrong, the pack-ins are pathetic, they provide no exclusive insight or goodies.

I would imagine if sales are indeed limited, they have been limited by Nintendo to bury its shame.

Amen. I finally saw this in person and the fact that they are charging for this is just awful. They could pack it in with every Wii and it would cost them nothing. SMB/Lost Levels are such crappy ports too. Ugh.

For this just being a copy and paste method onto a Wii Disc is pretty lame.

Should of at least added two more games to the original Mario All Stars.
SMB1
SMB2
SMB3
SMBLW
SML
SML2

Instad of the art book and history disc, would of been epic with these add ons:
SMW
SMW2
SM64
SMS
Yup, Nintendo really slipped on this one. Mario deserves better for 25 years.
Mario is older than 25.

This is the anniversary special for the 25th year of Super Mario Bros, not just Mario. The unofficial debut of Mario was in 1981 in the arcade version of Donkey Kong.

If you want an "official" 25th anniversary for Mario, he was first named Mario in 1982- in 2007 Super Mario Galaxy was released.

It may be overpriced and should have had more to it but I'm still happy, these games are still a blast to play and it's the first time I've ever played Lost Levels and the first time I've played SMB2 in at least 15 years. Yeah, it could have more to it, yeah, it could have been a virtual console game, but whatever, it's still fun.

This is pretty much how I feel.

Yeah, it might be overpriced. Yeah, it might not be anything but a reprint of a 1993 game. Yeah, it might be a lot of things.

I still can have fun playing it. If I enjoy it for what I paid for it (in my case, $6.57 out of pocket) then it's a good value to me.

I'm going to guess and say that a lot of the people bitching about how it's overpriced and all that are either people who couldn't get a copy, or people who are looking to flip it.

You guessed wrong.

Notice the use of three very important words: A lot of.

I have a hunch that we'll see a second release of this, minus all the goodies. The reason I feel this way is because of how Nintendo makes a note to refer to it in every email they send out as the "Limited Edition" instead of just its title. I think that might be a sign that we will see a non-LE version come out.

Maybe they will. Maybe they won't. I still think my local Kmart has a copy of this. I might check it out tomorrow.
