Super Paper Mario to come April 9 (Update!).

Maybe you all should quit arguing and just be happy this game got a release date, when it could have been left forgotten like many N64 and Gamecube games did.

This and Cooking Mama might convince me to get a Wii a few years when it's at a GC price point.

I didnt go back a page to read up on it but there are now rumors that this game will release via VC. Makes me wonder just how good looking and long it will be if its got to be kept to certain size restraints. Also I am wondering if this will be one to make me get out this 2G card for, I have yet to need it so far.

Yeah, there's no way in hell this game would come out for VC. It would be way too big.
Playing with the Wiimote sideways isn't very comfortable. I hope they at least have options for the classic controller or GC controller.
I'm guessing this is about brawl, I was thinking the same but then I thought a little bit more and came up with this:

smash bros has always really only used two buttons the A and B with the shoulder buttons to dodge/block if I am recalling correctly.

so what I was thinking is on the wii with the remote and nunchuck:
using the analog on the nunchuck like in zelda for movement, the A and B on the wiimote for well A and B, flicking either the nunchuck or the wiimote for the roll and you still have the 2 buttons on the nunchuck for shield/whatever.

The more I think about it I totally could see that working and being comfortable too.

He was talking about SPM. It will be played with the Wiimote sideways (NES style). SSBB is going to use either the GC and/or Classic Controller. The devs have already stated that the main gameplay will not use the Wiimote.

fight night 3 and resistance
they have that little game called Metal Gear 4 coming
Paper Mario will contol best with the classic controller.
If they rush mario galaxy the ps3 will take over sooner than you think
Still sour that this and new Kirby were cancelled and ported to the Wii.

Real lame, Nintendo
Sell maybe 200k copies to the all but dead GameCube, or possibly millions to the 3.5 Million+ Wii owners starving for a new Mario game, or any game for that matter? Hmmm...

That's semi-fault logic for a couple reasons.

1. The gamecube has an installed base of around 17 million, not all of those have sold them and moved on to Wii yet obviously.

2. The Wii plays GC games so Wii owners could still buy it, and many probably would given that there isn't shit coming out on the Wii worth playing right now anyway. Not to mention its not like they are souping up the graphics in these games since they moved to the Wii, so even those of us with Wiis aren't really getting anything out of the move.

I don't mind the shift since I have a Wii, but I can see how those that still have the Cube and no Wii would be rightly pissed over this.

You know as well as I do that most people don't think like that. It doesn't matter that Cube games work on the Wii, Gamecube is yesterday's news.

I don't think so, I've seen lots of posts of new Wii owners asking for Gamecube game reccomendations because they never bought a GC.

Given the absolutely dreadful game library on the Wii right now, I think people are more apt to look at GC games.

VC games have been selling well, so Wii owners are interested in playing non-current gen games. GC stuff isn't going to be on par with VC games, but it will still sell if it's marketed well to both Wii owners and the millions who have GCs and not Wiis yet.

Of course it matters. This is what spurred many GC owners to update to Wii. just like how the PS2's backward powers was what pushed people to get that system.

Even people who have a Wii now are wondering what other games they missed out on? After all there's only so many Wii games worth playing and people are itching to try out the system's other features. A VC game only does so much.

So is Super paper Mario an rpg or what? I saw a video and he was jumping around like a regular Mario game. Can someone explain how this game works?

It's a platformer with some RPG elements I believe (sure on the platformer part, not sure on the RPG elements).

It's an action RPG. You do platformer things to get to the RPG battles, then you can press action command buttons during battles to enhance offensive and defensive moves. It's great fun.

Wrong game... We're talking about Super Paper Mario, not the Paper Mario RPG games.

The poster who said that it's a platformer with RPG elements (such as hit points) is correct. Also has the 2-D/3-D mix thrown in, where you can switch at certain moments to pass by otherwise unpassable areas.

Not from anything we've seen. It's going to be more like traditional Mario gameplay, though again, with some RPG elements (like hit points) thrown in.

Again, who would pay $50 for a Cube game when they could get the Wii version for the same price? While there are still people who own a Cube, who would really buy it at this point? Very little. Just because the Wii is backwards compatible does not mean people are willing to drop $50 on an 'old' game. The Cube has been dead for a while now, I can't even remember the last big release.

I was referring to if they only put it out on the GC, rather than moving into the Wii in the first place.

If there's not a Wii version, Wii owners would be apt to consider it. I sure as hell would, just to dust of my Wii since Zelda remains the only game worth a purchase to me, and that's been done with since December.

Yeah, I have to agree (well, except for the dust part as we've been playing plenty of Wii games) - I'd buy this in a second if it was a GC-only release. The only reason for Nintendo to put it out for the Wii is to bolster the new game release schedule for the Wii during a particularly sparse period (pre-summer). They'd probably get more initial sales as a GC game, but they may get more longer-term benefit for putting it on the Wii (stronger lineup plus maybe more people pick up Wii's just for this game - as Wii's should be easy to find by April!).

Ohhh my God this game looks so good. I just bought and played through The Thousand Year Door in preparation and it was awesome. I think I'm going to preorder this tomorrow.

Famitsu just posted some 16:9 widescreen screens of the Super Paper Mario, which looks really nice. Here's a translation of the article itself, though it seems like there's not much information from the initial glance:
This game is starting to look better and better... well maybe I'm just getting more excited anyway. I sure hope my excitement is not let down.

Man can't wait for this... I see myself getting this for sure this year along with Metroid, Smash, Galaxy, and FE... I'll save all that fun for next Christmas Break =P

I'm still disappointed that SPM was scuttled on the 'cube, but Nintendo's strategy is sound because I'll probably buy a Wii for this.

I posted this in the "Wii novelty" thread, but here is what I heard about SPM game mechanics:

On last Friday's 1up Yours Podcast, Shane talked about playing Super Paper Mario. He said that it starts out like regular Paper Mario where you are walking around in a town that has a shop, an inn, etc., but when you actually start playing the game, the gameplay is very similar to Super Mario games and is broken down into stages (1-1, 1-2, etc.).

Another thing that sounds interesting is that Mario does not start out with all the abilities that you would expect him to have. Mario can't run, grab turtle shells, etc., initially and you gradually get these powers to allow you to get through stages easier.

The details are still kind of hazy, but any kind of Super Mario/Paper Mario bouillabaisse is fine with me.

noisynoisy asks, “How do the 2D/3D mechanics work? Can the player switch between the two at any time???

You actually control several different characters during the game, but only Mario can ‘flip’ the world between 2D and 3D. It’s easy–all you do is press the ‘A’ button to flip to 3D, but while in that view, a meter constantly counts down…if it runs out, you’ll begin to lose HP.

noisy goes on to ask, “Is the game more action or more RPG. Is it similar to the original Paper Mario on the N64?”

It has towns, shops, NPCs, and puzzles like the Paper Mario games you know and love, but nearly all of the levels unfold as a blend of traditional side-scrolling platforming and more RPG-like puzzle elements. All combat happens in real-time, though: You’re hopping and bopping, not picking commands from a menu.

and for good measure, noisy also asks, “Does the game support progressive scan with 16.9 ratio?”

Yep. That’s how I played it. Looks crisp!

Pipking asks, “How does the gameplay handle with the remote - creative or tacked on?”

That’s veering into reviewy territory, but I’ll say that although it was clearly not a from-the-ground-up Wii project, much of the Wii-mote implementation feels intuitive and clever. You’re probably only using true Wii-mote functionality less than 20% of the time you’re playing, though.

Pipking also aks, “Is it a long game?”

I beat it in about 27 hours, though I definitely missed a lot of optional stuff. Gotta go back and get it all…

That looks delicious. A preview build a full month and a 1/2 before it hits, eh? I gotta finish Crackdown, Sonic, and Gears fast so I can allow myself to nab this one ;)
