Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Gen. Discussion & Info

Diddy's a good choice, though I'm still waiting to here about one of the characters without affiliation to nintendo...

They should introduce a new challenger every week! That will make 12-13 more challengers and I will be happy.

Did Diddy just let out a monkey fart? It must be more deadly than Wario's.

I have never been a big fan of Diddy.

I hope they don't put anymore (Dixie, Kiddy, etc.) of the Kong's in this game.
boo, you guys are impatient. I keep the place updated, dont I?
You're doing a great job! People are talking about the update on the Smash Bros. website being late. I also stayed up as late as I could (1AMish Pacific Time), but I got tired and gave into sleep.

That said, I was hoping the update would be more mind-blowing than this. I'm not a big fan of Diddy either.

Eh, Diddy's not too bad.

Hopefully, he'll have a completely unique fighting style.

But did anyone else, upon reading "...screenshots fail to truly capture the way he moves," think "Then why didn't you give us a video?!"

I agree 1 million percent. The Kong side of the Nintendo universe is by far the shittiest.

But i would take the entire rest of the kong family over Sonic.
Banjo Kazooie would've been much better.
Too bad, because Rare owns that.

I like Diddy. I imagine he's going to be extremely fast and those are the characters I tend to lean towards. I'm still waiting for who's taking the place of Roy's spot. I'm going with Elwood
as he is his father.

I'm actually kinda surprised by all the Diddy Kong hate. Well, maybe not hate---more or less the "Doesn't care" feel that most have shared today.

I like it. I'm not a big Diddy fan and I probably will only use him if I have to--but it's still nice to have a FEW people from each franchise.

I do like Dixie, though! Wasn't THAT fast..and she floated :D very balanced and I loved her for that in DKC2..and 3..but I didn't really like DKC3 that much.

Word. I volunteer for a trip to the past to nip DKC in the bud. I'm gonna need a DeLorean and a fucking big gun. Dottie's got monkeys to kill.

They should have done Diddy and Dixie as a connected pair (like in DKC2 or 3) and then use them as a balance for Ice Climbers so they could leave them in.

DKC games were great. :speaktothehand:

DCK were some of my favorite games of all time. What games do you actually enjoy then?

I don't mind Diddy being in SSBB. I hate him being in the Mario spinoff games because he's totally not canon in the Mario series, but as far as being in a game that's essentially a collection of Nintendo all-stars, he fits in pretty well.

Not germane to this thread. Start one called "Games dothog enjoys" and I'll meet you there with bells on.

Doesn't rare own donkey kong?

Does anyone actually like sonic? Like as those people who enjoyed the classic games back in the day.

I like Sonic. I want him SSBM. I am beginning to think I'm alone in that, however. Oh well.

Eh, the old games were good. I wouldn't mind seeing him in, assuming he had a good moveset.

Of course, Megaman is the #1 wanted third-party character wanted by me.

I'm convinced that all of the Sonic haters weren't playing videogames in the early-to-mid 90's. Sega vs. Nintendo, Sonic vs. Mario was the biggest feud in arguably the best generation of videogame history. I can't even imagine how people don't want to see this happen, unless they weren't around during that time.

Judging Sonic on his current state is like judging Muhammed Ali on his current boxing ability. He may not be anything special now, but once you obtain legend status, you keep it forever.

I want Sonic in Brawl more than anyone else.
As soon as I heard that Brawl would have 3rd party characters, the first thought that popped into my mind was "they HAVE TO put Sonic in."

Honestly I think no Sonic would be a bigger blow than no online IMO. (ok, maybe that's a LITTLE extreme  )

I'm starting to think people don't remember how big a deal the Mario/Sonic rivalry was back in the day.
I feel like an old man!

*EDIT* Well said, EvilMax!

Here, here! :applause:

If you don't remember the "Blast Processing" commercials, then you don't fully appreciate the longing people have to play as the blue hedgehog in a fun game again.

As convinced as you are, you're wrong. The "Sonic vs. Mario" bullshit didn't appeal to most people 12 years and older at the time. I'd guess that debate was mostly elementary school playground fodder.

Though I played the games, I didn't care for him then and I don't care for him now. For me the lack of appeal was the whole "mascot with attitude" thing. It's the same reason I don't like the Rare Kongs. It's a dumb marketing gimmick designed to appeal to kids without much else behind it (well, the something behind Sonic was speed, just as the something behind DKC was the graphics). There's not so much creation and imagination in the character as there is well-considered marketing that's looking to appeal to as many members of a target demographic as possible.

Whenever I think of Sonic (or any phony attitude character) I can't help but think of the board meeting in the Poochie episode of the Simpsons:
LADY: We at the network want a dog with attitude. He's edgy, he's "in your face." You've heard the expression "let's get busy"? Well, this is a dog who gets "biz-zay!" Consistently and thoroughly.
KRUSTY: So he's proactive, huh?
LADY: Oh, God, yes. We're talking about a totally outrageous paradigm.
I would imagine similar meetings sprung up around Sonic. "He's fast, and he runs to blazing guitar rock. It's totally in your face, hip, and fresh. And we have assurances that it is rad."

Sonic vs Mario was the 90s, it wasn't just some kids 12 and under thing. They were the flagship mascots of their respective consoles, Sonic repping the Genesis and Mario the Super Nintendo. The biggest console war ever, you made friends based on which system you pledged alliegence to, you supported that company for years to come. It wasn't a simple elementary school ground fodder. My parents likened it to Ford vs Chevy, my mom will not get anything other than Ford and the same with Nintendo, my dad the opposite.

To not have Sonic in the game would be blasphemy, finally a chance for Mario and Sonic to duke it out in a gaming world, settle the console wars once and for all. The nostalga, the chance to see Mario vs Sonic on the same screen, it would be epic for anyone who played games and/or grew up in the 90s.

Sonic WAS cool and is a legend, evilmax said it perfectly.

loving the "Go K.K. Rider" song

Then there’s this arrangement. As I sit and enjoy this song, it reminds me of one phrase in particular...
"Heroes always arrive late."

sakurai's comments always manage to make me grin :D

i think the wings for yoshi are a call back to his super mario world days, albeit a bit of a hybrid between fireball and flight forms

The fact that the Sonic vs. Mario rivialry was more of a kiddie thing had nothing to do with the fact that it was, as zerowing said, the symbol of the biggest, in my opinion greatest, console war of all time.

But more importantly, Sonic 1-3 were just plain good. While Mario clearly outshines Sonic in the modern games, that doesn't change the fact that the Genesis games are simply classics.

Sonic might suck ass now, but I still hold Sonic 3 & Knuckles as my favorite game of all time, bar none. And no, it's not just the memories, as I still play through it (and the other Genesis Sonic games) every few months or so.

I would give any amount of testicles to play as Sonic or Knuckles (I really don't giving a flying fuck about all the others).

Sonic as a playable character, and his final smash is going Super Sonic? fuck YES!

Awesome, a throwback to Super Mario World (my favorite game), Yoshi looks like he grabbed a multicolored shell which gives him the ability of all the Yoshi forms, Blue-Wings, Red-Fireballs, Yellow-Ground stomping, maybe we will get ground stomping in this FS. This is by far my favorite Final Smash, because of the throwback to SMW and because he looks really awesome. Dig the music, and looks like Sakurai is making up for yesterday.

Well, at least you can be sure Sonic is going against Mario in the Olympics... if you're into that sorta thing.

Now, I wonder who will win in the 100m dash?
