Superman Returns is now out..so let talk about it people!

I was going to go see this at my semi-local imax (25mins away) But I just checked the imax website to make sure the local place was playing it, and it turns out that the only imax playing it is 50 miles away. Screw that man I'll just go to the local theater (15 mins away).

-Superman saving the jetliner was very reminisant to the DCAU Superman:TAS pilot 3 parter where he saves the jetliner from doom. Very cool effect, just proves that Superman can't always catch everything the first time.

-Luthor is an idiot plan and simple. Sure lets build our own crystal island without studying the long term effects of it.

-Superman's son???????? oooo intresting.

-the burrito scene lol

-Gotham city is mention.......ooooooooooooo batman must not be too happy right now.

-Kind of disturbing to see a woman get beaten infront of a child. Luthor couldn't spare the kid??

-With all that modern tech, no local officals could see that thing falling from the sky near the Kent Farm?

-Great movie, not enough Luthor.

I went to a 10 o'clock showing at the local theater here with my g/f. I thought the movie was fantastic. A couple little qualms here and there, but overall, I really enjoyed it.
Better than Batman Begins?
hmm

well if you want to think of it, Batman begins is a REBOOT of the series, while Superman Returns is supose to force us to IGNORE part 3 and 4. Too bad there was no mention of Zod and his groupies.

Same situation, and I completely agree.
Better than Batman Begins?
Fantastic movie? Yes. Better than Batman? No.

That mini-gun portion was fucking awesome. It was by and large my favorite part of the movie. The only thing that could have made it better was a bullet bouncing off of his eye afterwords at point blank.

...Oh, wait.

The trailer ruined the minigun scene for me as we all knew what was going to happen next.

The EMP scenes shouldn't have been called EMP's as if it were EMP's then nothing should have come back on line and everything electronic should have shorted out period.

noticed how those x-38's escorting the air force liner with the shuttle on it seemed un effected by the temporary black out effect?

suprised Luthor didn't use Superman's son as bait or a hostage.

superman forgot to recover the crystals :O

the crystals/krypotonite absorbing everything reminds me of Tiberium for the CNC series.

what Superman forgot to take Luthor to jail?

I am so glad they didn't go with a blonde superman aka Nick Cage... After Batman Forever, I couldn't bare to see a blonde batman :O

Better than Batman Begins? Hell no. There's no "character bias" here...I don't really like Batman OR Superman as far as comic characters, but the two films are miles apart.

Was just looking at a few of the reviews. Sometimes Ebert just doesn't get it:

Now about Lois' kid. We know who his father is, and Lois knows, and I guess the kid knows, although he calls Richard his daddy. But why is nothing done with this character? He sends a piano flying across a room, but otherwise he just stares with big, solemn eyes, like one of those self-sufficient little brats you can't get to talk. It would have been fun to give Superman a bright, sassy child, like one of the Spy Kids, and make him a part of the plot.

Never was a huge fan of the other movies. Though the new one has my interest. Probably take the wife to see it this weekend. She loves the other ones.

I was fairly surprised that i enjoyed this movie to a good degree. Never have been a fan of the Superman movies even as a child. That being said I was a little disturbed at first by the fact that they decided not to restart the franchise and instead to pick up after II. However, it turned out to be a pretty good movie.

Saw the IMAX 3D version last night and came away very impressed. I too wasn't sure how it would work out taking place after Superman II. Needless to say Singer and co. pulled it off!
The DVD can't come soon enough.
They say that in November is when the dvd will hit along side a mega 12 disc or so collection for the first 4 movies :O

 Ebert really is a tard sometimes. I don't give two shits about Superman, but even I know that's a horrible idea. The Silent Hill review was about as bad. I think he needs to retire.

You have a sexy way of saying things.

P.S. Superman is a no go for me. I would rather have Jar Jar nail me with a strap on.

Whoa wait a second, are they saying that
Superman has a kid?!?!?

What a great fucking way to ruin the movie. Yep, definetly not seeing it now. That's so assinine, way to ruin the fucking character Singer.

This was in the trailers. Not really a spoiler or a surprise.

you moron what do you think was going to happen?!??! I mean did you miss that scene in Superman 2??!? I don't think Lane brought a pack of condoms with her to the FOS so implantation was a strong possiblity, super powers or not.

yea, but remembered he depowered himself prior to the sex scene. so no super sperm.

Not it!

No, they showed a kid in the trailer and also said that Lois married some other guy while Superman was gone. That would lead someone to believe that the kid belongs to the new guy.

I haven't seen the original Superman movies since I was a kid. They were boring. Either way, despite what they taught you in your junior high sex ed class, people can have sex without a condom and not get pregnant.
even if he wore a condom, he has SUPER SPERM which no condom can contain.
In the words of Brodie from Mallrats:
"It's impossible, Lois could never have Superman's baby. Do you think her fallopian tubes could handle the sperm? I guarantee you he blows a load like a shotgun right through her back. What about her womb? Do you think it's strong enough to carry her child?...He's an alien, for Christ sake. His Kyrptonian biological makeup is enhanced by earth's yellow sun. If Lois gets a tan the kid could kick right through her stomach. Only someone like Wonder Woman has a strong enough uterus to carry his kid. The only way he could bang regular chicks is with a kryptonite condom. That would kill him. "
yea, but remembered he depowered himself prior to the sex scene. so no super sperm.
nah, he just told her that so he could get laid.:D

According to the logic of most movies, it would lead me to believe that it's not the husband's, because in 99% of movies, that's what happens.

I've been hearing that Kate Bosworth sucks in the movie. This wouldn't surprise me, and she doesn't really have any acting ability to speak of, or at least not that I've seen. Your thoughts?

Yes but Superman having a kid is such an obnoxious idea that I didn't even consider it when I saw the preview. I mean how can you have a super hero movie when they have to tote around a son or daughter?

Oh but the kid has super powers too!?!? Wow, can we look forward to a sidekick in the next movie? Please god, that would be the bestest thing ever
nah, he just told her that so he could get laid.:D
nooooooooooo

he was depowered so the sperm was normal sperm, er well uh...weak sperm...

weak enough for it to grow inside Lane... but the boy's powers didn't come about til much later.

Doesn't surprise me at all. Her main claim to fame is fucking Orlando Bloom.

You don't even find out it's actually his until close to the end. The characters believe it's Lois' husband's kid for the large majority of the movie. The kid doesn't know until the very last scene.

It doesn't ruin the movie at all, as he only uses his powers once. So calm down, your fanboy is showing

Where did Super Boy come from in the comics?

I saw it last night, I didn't think it was that good. I'm not into comics so I didn't really care whether I saw it or not, but if I had to grade it i'd give it a C.

I'm going to see it tomorrow with a few friends. I hope it's pretty good, or else it'll be a long 2 hours and 37 minutes.

That made me smile :)

Even though they f'd up the presentation of the movie when I saw it on Mon., I REALLY liked it. Probably a little bit more than Batman due to the fact we dont exactly have to go through the origins of the character. All the actors did fine, Spacey was amazing, and it fit with the happier tone of the Superman character without going into "Batman: The TV show" territory.

The special effects where perfect. The speed at which he flew and when he was
turning around and eye blasting the falling debris
looked believeable. I cant wait to see it in imax 3-d.

On a side note to RvB (if im not on your ignore list), not only will batman be adopting Robin,
it looks like we may be getting a super child
in the actual comic. On a related Marvel note, has Spider-man's marriage slowed him down at all? Same basic idea of baggage at home.

You may be right, it may not ruin the movie but it certainly ruins the character. Just because something happens at the end doesn't mean it can't ruin the entire movie as a whole though. As far as my "fanboy showing" I'm not even sure what you mean by that. I read comics but I'm indifferent toward Superman and don't read any of his titles unless there's a crossover.

Had they made Superman Returns look even remotely interesting I would have probably gone to see it at midnight with my friends last night. At this point though, it goes beyond just not finding the movie interesting to just flat out being dumb. Like I said in the other Superman Returns thread, the acting looks cheesy and hammy and the dialog is just as bad. For a movie that's trying to take itself as seriously as Superman Returns, there's no reason to have such cheesy scenes like "what is it, a bird? a plane?" "Did somebody call me?" The only highlight would be an assorted smattering of special effects and the only interesting thing I saw in the trailer would be the plane scene and the bullet into the eye. Definetly not enough to get me to go and sit through 2 hours and 37 minutes. Also, the movie is based on some of the most boring movies I can remember watching as a child. Had they gone the Batman Begins route and just started over I would have had a much cleaner slate with regard to my opinion. Hell, I had a decidedly negative opinion of Batman Begins before I saw it but I gave it a chance simply because it was a fresh start. I was pleasantly surprised because it ended up being one of my favorite comic book movies of all time.

I spoke to a good friend of mine earlier who has been excited to see it , then we talked about it and he said it was good but not great. He always does this..get hyped up about the movie for months then just picks at it after he sees it.

anyone know of any comics or web sites that tell about Superman getting married and having a kid or the kid thing an Alternate universe only thing?

You don't want to believe me do you? Superman has never had a kid in the comics. Alternate universe storyline maybe but there are none that I know of.

I expect to see this in a movie lasting over two hours...

oh ok...

I saw it last night...I thought it was pretty good, and I really enjoyed it. I was sadly more excited to see the Spiderman 3 trailer than Superman, but it was still a pretty good movie...way better than what I was expecting.

Let me first mention that I've never been a big Superman fan. I love comics in general and I don't hate Superman or anything, just not my favorite by any stretch of the imagination.

That being said, the movie was amazing. Wow. Visually I've never been so amazed. Go see it right now! Really.
Where did Super Boy come from in the comics?
I believe he was a clone of Superman made in Cadmus Labs or something like that. Never read the comics, but I did read the novelization of the "Death and Life of superman" which covered it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I thought Brandon Routh did an excellent job at playing Christopher Reeve as Clark Kent/Superman, although Routh's Clark Kent wasn't as good as Reeve's, in my opinion. Routh (in the movie at least) sounds just like Christopher Reeve and at times made me do a double take, since I thought I was looking at Reeve (although I don't think he looks as much like Reeve as everyone says he does). The visuals were truly fantastic.

Minor complaints: Kate Bosworth did not portray Lois Lane very well; at least not the Margot Kidder Lois Lane that she was supposed to be. My other qualm is what has been stated in the discussion above, although I'm really not all that bothered by it as some people appear to be.

I also could not help but think that this movie was about Superman and Cyclops, since James Marsden has such a prolific role in it, but that's more just the random-thinking-nerd in me coming out.

Which leads me to this observation: James Marsden (the guy who plays Cyclops in the X-Men movies) had more face time in Superman Returns than he did in all of the X-Men movies combined.
