One of them is an animator, the other is more in the business operations side of things. I got a tour of their facility and it was fascinating. So many talented artists there.

Watched Chinese Zodiac 2012 . It was good, been waiting to see this one a while. Great Jackie Chan action. I really do appreciate his films.

Oz, The Great and Powerful was. . .great and powerful lol. I usually hate on James Franco for being such a stoner, but I actually didn't mind him in this as a wiley magician/wizard. Also major props to Sam Raimi for creating/fleshing out some very interesting characters and the world of Oz. It's not a perfect film, but surely worth a watch.

That is surprising! I've been reading reviews and they've been mostly lukewarm to bad. Will probably check this out when it comes to bu ray:D
 
Watched half an hour of ABCs of Death, I don't think I'm going to finish it, it's awful. All the stories are either stupid or overly weird.
 
I liked Oz. It seems like most of the critics are book snobs, where if something isn't adapted directly word by word from the book it's horrible.

Dead Man Down was really good. Some of the trailers make it look like a full blown action movie though, it's has some scenes but don't go in expecting Die Hard. More story based. Good stuff.

I'm guessing you're talking about the 2012 Project X and not the 1980s one with Matthew Broderick, which I thought was pretty decent?

Finally saw Brave. Not my favorite Pixar, but at least the movie wasn't about yet another princess finding/looking for her prince in an unlikely place.

I don't know why this movie got so much love. It started off good and had a (more) powerful female lead and then it turned into 45 minutes of slap-sticky bullshit.

Agreed, 2 of the strongest performances of the year in Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix. I'd add that I also liked the cinematography as well but everything else about the movie just bored me to tears.

From what I've read, it was a hit with the children's demographic, not so much with adults. Lack of emotional depth and all that.

Yeah, Brave is down there with Cars 2 for me. Merida's technologically-advanced hair didn't help with the storyline.
 
Oz was ok, probably wouldn't bother watching it again. There were tons of little nods to what happens later with Dorothy and all, some of it I didn't even catch until after the movie.

My problem with it was that it was a story that has been told a million times before. Pixar is usually more original than that.

I was surprised at an interview I read that Ridley Scott (director) said that the real meaning of the Engineers goes far beyond the meaning in the movie.

The reason they hate us and want to kill us was because they created us and we messed up and they sent one Engineer named Jesus Christ to help us go on the set path, but we killed him.

Reason he chose not to make it in the movie was because he did not want to lose so much potential viewers due to a religious issue.

Interesting angle. He should put that in the sequel cause it's gonna make money anyway.
 
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (US Version). Think it's the third time I've seen it (the g/f hadn't seen it). Really like it still and hope they do end up doing the rest of the series with
Fincher and the cast. Last I read it wasn't sounding promising though.

I take it you have Encore? I was watching again myself and thinking the same thing. I know Sony is all worried about the cost and Craig's salary for the next one, but Skyfall made like a billion dollars. Give Mara a raise and pay Craig.

Yeah, Daniel Craig wants too much money. Last I heard of it, they're looking to push forward without Craig unless he takes a pay cut. And in the event that he doesn't, they'll just write him out of the script somehow and focus more on Lisbeth.
 
@dohdough I haven't seen a Kurosawa film in a long time, so I can't really compare the trilogy to his films. It's probably more like watching one of those kung fu films like 36th Chamber, as we see Takezo shape himself into the paragon samurai, Mushashi. Of course, I'm still comparing apples to oranges.

No way they could cut his character as Blomkvist is just as central to the plot in the second and third book/movie as the first. If he they can't get him they'd have to recast.

Are you serious? Glad he left that out.
 
Compliance. This is a tough watch, and seems unbelievable, but pretty much everything depicted in the film has happened. I actually have seen this twice now, and the 2nd time it was even more painful, I think. I'd call it a "one-timer". Totally worth seeing and really well done, but it isn't something you'll want to see twice. It's available on netflix streaming.
 
Jay and Silent Bob go Down Under was good, it's another one of those Q&A things smith does. Oh and Mewes actually seems clean and happy for once, still can't believe he's married.
 
Saw A Single Man. Holy shit was it good. I'm not gay at all but the sexual tension in that movie was insane. Colin Firth played it so well. It was just so visually poetic and well done. Highly recommend it.
 
The great and powerful Oz.

It was a bit of a rollarcoaster for me while watching it, mostly because I was expecting and wanting it to be darker (like Alice and wonderland) and some parts even felt like it was ripped from other great fantasy movies (Alice in wonderland, Harry Potter, Snow White).
Other then those minor complaints it was still a very well done movie with a nice twist I wasn't expecting. Over all I'll say it was worth the money spent to see it on the big screen.

What about the awesome 2 part made for TV movie? fucking love that and it definitely had dark parts. Jaberwocky in that movie was scary as hell for a young me.

Pretty much. That movie is far from great. It had next to no story, it was just showing off 3D the whole time.

I saw it in 2D which made the whole movie stupid as hell.

I saw The Dreamers today in theaters. There is a film festival in Prague this week showcasing old, older, really old, and new movies that have yet to have or won't have a wide release.
As for the film in question. I liked it. It certainly challenges the intolerant viewers which I'm always a fan of. It's a somewhat twisted film that deals with 3 college aged adults. A twin brother and sister who have a strange dependance on each other as well as being sexually creepy. Then the third man who is a new found friend. Parents leave town and the twins invite the third man to stay for a week of odd, twisted shenanigans.
 
Finally got around to watching Dredd on blu-ray. It was a lot better than I expected. Karl Urban was pretty dam awesome as Dredd. The story was simple but effective and was really gritty which I think suits Dredd more than what the Original movie did with the character. Definitely recommend but if you are a little squeamish be warned there are plenty of slow mo gunshots and heads being caved in.
