Surprisingly The Last Movie You Saw Didn't Suck Pt. 2

"The Raid"

the-raid-poster.jpg

Best action film I've seen in years with the best knife fights I've EVER seen. There is some impressive stuff here.

The entire context of the film is that a SWAT team raids a multi-story complex to nab the crime lord on the top floor. I won't say more than that. If you get a chance and you watch crap like Sucker Punch, this will kick you in the balls.

It's about time that videogames started influencing movies in a real way.

I love that it's gone beyond thematic elements, and started incorporating the videogame experience. Eat your heart out Ebert!!!

Ironically, he gave it only 1 star. It's rated highly both on RT and IMDB.
as long as your except crap, you wont be disappointed in those swedish movies for played with fire and kicked the hornets nest. someone on imdb mentions that theres a scene in the movie where you notice real life traffic and people going by as a cop is murdered by gunfire lol might have to youtube that to see how bad that scene is.

anyone know whats the deal with the whole hunger games racism deal? i keep seeing that pop up here and there. also finally finishing sucker punch lol damn you thieving sega lol.

Some people are angry that a character described as "dark skinned" in the book is played by a black actress.

Or so is my understanding from having read something, anything about it.

Devil (2010)

I love a lot of the angles people have taken with Christian mythology, but this was one of the worst attempts I've seen. The twist is a big middle finger to the audience (like most of M Night's films), and everything that lead up to it was super generic, with the religious mexican guy explaining the director's incredibly shallow plot concepts to audience, every step of the way.

And for real, if you're going to personify the Devil, or any kind of supernatural/diving being -- make them seem at least a little powerful. Killing a shady salesman and making your exit by briefly shutting off the power in a skyscraper-- is that all the Devil is there for? How...very petty.

It was only cowritten by M Night, not directed. Consequently the pacing was much better then the typical M Night film.

I thought it was pretty good. The supernatural character was more of a demon then the devil but it seems silly to dwell on that. The movie was set in an elevator, set your expectations accordingly.

Seems like you're just butthurt because the devil was more of a trickster god devil and the movie didn't have much to do with Christianity. How petty.

Yeah, it's not really a Christianity movie. They just called it Devil so they could make a cool movie poster out of the name.
camoor you're fucking adorable
meh.

It's fine to not like the movie, I just think it's stupid to dislike the movie because it wasn't true to Christian mythology.

I believe that the devil is mentioned a whopping two or three times in the Christian bible, which means that most devil/demon movies are cut out of whole cloth. Not to mention that the movie never said it was the devil - just one of the characters. The movie was not advertising itself as another Prophecy, it was more of a neat little thriller like Fallen or Frailty, a tight story with a small circle of characters that gets summed up with a bow by the time the credits roll.

Also I'm not sure how a thriller that takes place almost completely in an elevator is generic - I've only seen a few other movies (Speed, Phone Booth) that manage to keep the tension up in such a small space which is not an easy feat.

What can I say - I don't like many movies so when I see a comment I disagree with I'm going to speak up.

All right, rant over, diverting power to flame shield :)

I got Netflix and after Mass Effect 3 I feel done with games for awhile. In other words, I've watched a lot.

Muppets 2012 - I love Muppets and puppetry so I really enjoyed it. Catchy songs. Definitely lost some steam in the last third though.
Winter's Bone - I actually lived in this area of Missouri. Didn't have the same experience but the family ties, grudges, things like that - are for real. Drugs and poverty are real. Thought the movie was pretty damn good. Jennifer Lawrence is awesome and that guy who played her uncle was awesome, too.
Winnebago Man - This was great especially since I have a background in broadcast and I remember the early days of the internet. The guy is hilarious and I'm glad they rediscovered him.
Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead - This was also pretty great. I think I've lost about ten pounds since I watched it.
Labyrinth - Painful. Since I missed it as a kid it didn't have the nostalgia thing going for it. Bowie's costume will probably haunt my dreams for awhile. I did appreciate the sci-fi weirdness, the technical puppetry and whatnot though.
The Last Airbender - I can see where the hate comes from. Still, this was not the abomination I expected - but not even close to the animated series - which I would consider a modern classic in the vein of Harry Potter.

I've also watched about 12 eps of Arrested Development. This show is amazing.

My note on how directors should handle the super natural more convincingly was broken away from my paragraph about the real issues with the movie -- it was a ranting afterthought and I should be able to throw that out there in a thread that's for casual ranting. I'm not a movie critic (I do try to write game reviews, check 'em out!), and I came here to spend 30 seconds sharing my thoughts on the last movie I saw. At best that should prompt some discussion, at worst I guess it calls for personal attacks. If you want to get defensive over a movie you like, by all means, but it shouldn't take the form of "the pacing was good, you have shitty taste in movies."

Anyways, I'm not angry with the movie because I walked in expecting serious Christain mythology, I even stated I love when people take different angles with it. Some trickster playing a game with people in an elevator does sound pretty unique, that's why I wanted to see it.

The pull of the movie for most people then, I imagine, is the question of who is going to die next and how, and which one is the demon? So I bring up M Night because the twist is totally his, as in, it's awful. The bedtime story is about the Devil taking human form, and the movie follows this premise for its entire length. But at the big reveal? No, sorry audience, we just wanted to give you some death scene eye-candy and lead you on with meaningless character backstory.

Because the demon is the old lady (my first guess actually, because everyone knows the white guy will make it through, the douchecanoe will die, the black guy will die, and the woman looks too nice to kill off early). But her most valuable disguise isn't her human form, it's the fact that she can remove herself from the entire movie and decide to come back at the final minutes. What.

I'm sure they were really circle jerking at the story board with this one -- "ohhh they'll never see this one coming!" No, I wouldn't see it coming, because it's bullshit. Twists work because when they are revealed, your mind immediately draws a powerful connection to something in the past that you missed -- there's meaning. There was nothing to miss here, the old lady was a non-factor, she didn't exist. The cinematography and screeching violins just lead you on, and at the big moment, the movie decides on what power the devil does actually have -- pretending to be dead. Even the SAW films are better than this.

Can't I just enjoy a cheap thriller? Sure, and remove all the feigned foreshadowing and white noise script, and you have probably 10 minutes of a mildly entertaining film. But it wanted a story, one with a message it was proud of. It comes across crystal clear in the final scene where we learn about the power of forgiveness, in the most melodramatically delivered line I've heard in a while too. Doesn't get preachier than that.

The last movie I'd think to find myself discussing at length about

Saw Captain America last night. It was probably the most unrealistic comic movie of all the recent ones. It's either realistic or like Hellboy it's obviously not gonna be realistic but it's understandable. This movie tried the realistic route with just too many fantasy elements thrown in. It also just felt like a long prelude opening to The Avengers. It was fun but whatever.

i agree it could have been worse easily but it was ok but nothing that left you going wow. as far as these newer marvel films go iron man one is the best. heres to hoping the new spiderman is as sweet as it looks. please bring in kraven a some point.

I thought it was okay as well.

I honestly don't really care for any of the Marvel Studios movies. Worth watching once I'd say, but they're alright at best.

The Avengers is going to be Transformers 3 with Marvel characters. That's exactly what it looks like to me.

I'll reserve judgement till I see it. It's definitely going to be very action heavy but that's not the worst possible thing.

I enjoyed Transformers 3 so I wouldn't be bothered by it, but it looks like the same thing.

I like action heavy movies, just not when they're really stupid like Iron Man 2 was.

So I finally watched the Evil Dead trilogy. I had a pretty good idea of what I was getting in to. The first was better than I expected, the third was worse than I expected, and the second was best. I was prepared for a major shift in tone in the third, but damn, man. The constant revising of what happened in previous films was irritating.
The last movie I'd think to find myself discussing at length about
I can't argue with hating on the twist. I didn't hate it myself but I didn't find it mind-blowing either - it was just there.

I've honestly stopped paying attention to twists, I expect them to the point that I only notice when one reaches up and grabs me. Twists are way overdone, nowadays they're basically just a marketing gimmick to get the mouthbreathers in the theater.

So take out the twist and you have an entertaining character-driven whodonit with a haunting, claustrophobic atmosphere.

I honestly think that people hate on this movie just because it is associated with M Night. Phone Booth had
a nothing ending
and people don't hate on that one. At least this one attempted the throw the pitch over home plate with a little english on it.

I got really really sick of the musical numbers. I don't go to an action movie to see chorus line bs.

Because of all the Devil discussion happening, I finally went and watched it last night.

It wasn't bad. It's far from perfect and no one is arguing that but as far as popcorn movies goes, it's not a bad way to spend 80 minutes. The tension was pretty good albeit the scares were cliche throughout. They don't really succeed in pulling off the big life lesson in the end but whatever. Ultimately, the premise and the execution are just good enough to make it worth seeing.

I did actually laugh out loud at the hispanic dude who throws a piece of jelly toast onto the ground.

Agreed Dastly.

If you want to talk about a movie with stupid twists and turns then just see "A Perfect Getaway".

The real perfect getaway is leaving the movie in the first 5 minutes.

The most unrealistic recent comic movie? Have you not seen Green Lantern?
The most unrealistic recent comic movie? Have you not seen Green Lantern?
Haven't seen Green Lantern because it looks horrible. But you must not have read my whole post.

You can either do a comic movie like X-men, or Hellboy, or Green Lantern. There are alien elements, fantasy elements. That's the world you are in. It's realistic in the sense that that's the world.

Then there are comic movies that are based more in reality. The new Batmans, Iron Man, etc.

Captain America basically tried to be realistic but then tried to have other worldly elements, not to mention jumping across a huge gap of space and not even showing what happened.

Because it tried to be realistic it ended up pretty unrealistic. You know going into Green Lantern it's complete fantasy.

green lantern is shit. its so shit its just shit. i saw some of it on hbo and holy fuck every fucking alien in it looks derpy gimp retarded the cgi is so bad ewwwwww and the acting.......what acting? i feel soooooooooooo bad for people who paid to see it and even worse for anyone who liked it. considering how much money they spent to make it i have to wonder how much they ran off with because the cgi doesnt look like it cost that much hell ive seen shit in the 80s that was drawn onto film that looked better.

I don't know what movie you were watching, but the CG was probably the one great thing in the movie.

Oa and the other Lanterns looked great.

Saw today:

Wrath of The Titans - I enjoyed it. A lot better than the first one IMO.

Underworld Awakening - Enjoyed this as well. Pretty much was what I expected it to be.

I get what you are saying.

For example, there was a scene where guys who are dual-wielding flamethrowers pen Captain American in a box of fire. But why wouldnt they just fry his ass?

I thought Tron was going to be a good enough movie, since it had Jeff Bridges, and boy was my mind blown. It looks fucking amazing, especially since it was made in the beginning of the 80s.

Why the hell would anybody really think Captain America was realistic? If it weren't for the stupid suits desire to make it a setup for Avengers, I would've been happy enough. Really? Stanley Tucci would make the Human Torch even more powerful? Ha. It was enough that it was a fun enough movie.

^Tron: Legacy is at the top of my collection.

The trailer promised me a movie about an ordinary guy turned supersoldier kicking Nazi ass.

The trailer never told me that all of the action would be in montages, padded out my shitty musical numbers and a red clown, and ending in a fight on a ridiculously oversized bomber powered by a magic energy cube.

They're movies based on comics, it's all fantasy/sci-fi. If you go into it expecting much realism, then I don't know what to say.

You can blame the trailer part on stupid advertising decisions. The cosmic cube shows up in the Avengers comics quite a bit, and even though this was Cap's origin movie, they weren't going to ignore the decades of story since his debut in the early part of the last century.

The Artist

I liked it very much! Despite being black and white and just music to the film, it was quite humorous and the acting was top notch.
