Surprisingly the Last Movie You Saw Didn't Suck
It should either be with accents or all in German. It is hard to get into the story with people speaking with American and English accents. I got how it switched over in the first scene but it got to the point that I didn't feel that they were Germans besides the uniforms.
Yea seriously. Could you imagine if they did that with the Last Samurai? Katsumoto would have turned around in his grave.

The German accent doesn't exist when you speak German. Using English with a German accent would just make people question why they're speaking English. I'm pretty sure critics pan movies that does this. Moviegoers don't like subtitles.

At first I didn't see the negative sign and I thought I was going to throw up :)

Yeah... was worried about that. I don't remember much around the time of it coming out but weren't people raving about this shit? If so wow...

If I remember right didn't people have the opposite reaction to The Last Samurai? I didn't have a problem with any of the accents in The Last Samurai but I know some did.

I understand that but since I don't speak German I correlate the German accent with .......drum-roll....... Germans. And to top it off it had Bill Nighy and Eddie Izzard with their distinct English accents with the American dialects.

I can deal with films not speaking the source language (I would prefer subtitles) but the way my brain is wired if they aren't speaking the native language an accent is as important in a film like this as the setting and costumes.

P2 - Not a bad psychopath thriller. It had a few really good scenes and was done very well for this sort of movie.

The Rosebud Beach Hotel - A cheese filled movie that is the type that filled the cable premium channels after dark in the 80's and early 90's. It had its moments and it was one of those movies that are so bad that it is a treat to watch. It moves at a snails pace but a good watch while reading a magazine or playing a casual DS game.

Angel-A - 3/5 - visually the movie is gorgeous. Rie Rasmussen definitely helps its case. The story is decent. You probably have gotten the same experience in 40minutes and I didn't care much for the ending. overall a decent film by Luc Besson.
At first I didn't see the negative sign and I thought I was going to throw up :)
The movie probably would have been 1/10 if Jennifer Aniston wasn't in it.

Intacto - 3/5 - one of Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's films. had to see it after he was named the director of bioshock. The movie is pretty solid. Story is a little weird with "stealing luck" and a whole underground gambling scene dedicated to these games of luck for such high prices. Film was alright. It has its unique story, acted well. It doesn't spoon feed you the story like most films which is good. A few shots were really nice like anything in the desert. It is just too bad that Intacto didn't make me any more or less excited for bioshock the film. :/

Brüno (2009)

Disappointing. Hilarious, but disappointing. It felt like a total repeat of Borat. The mockumentary style, the comedy, etc., it all felt the same. Honestly, Sacha Baron Cohen should have waited much longer between Borat and Brüno, and came up with something more original and unique, like Borat was in 2006. I still liked it, and enjoyed it more than a lot of other films from this year, but it did not live up to Borat's level at all. I probably need to watch it a second time, with that in mind. I might like it more.

Monsters vs Aliens (2009)

Very entertaining, and also very forgettable. The jokes were funny, the action scenes were cool, and the animation itself was beautiful, ("the first computer animated movie to be directly produced in a stereoscopic 3-D format instead of being converted into 3-D after completion", blah blah), but overall it was nothing new. DreamWorks, unlike Pixar like usual, goes with a HUGE cast of celebrity voices, including three actors from The Office, (John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, Ed Helms), Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, and even Stephen Colbert as the President of the USA, to name just a few. Seth Rogen, of course, was easily the funniest character, playing the moronic "B.O.B.", (he doesn't have a brain, you see). This was no Monsters, Inc., and with it being a DreamWorks film, I fully expect a sequel within 3 years.

Jules Et Jim (1962) - A brilliant example of the French New Wave.

Citizen Kane (1941)
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

Watched the 2 above with friends today and blew their minds. My 3rd favourite (Kane) and favourite movie (2001) respectively. Amazing, amazing, amazing day.

District 9 = 8/10

having an Aussie play the lead role really helped the entertainment + comedy aspect. reminded me of a murray hewit from flight of the concords. I also watched it w/o subs which probably made it better because the dialog was so weak.
reminded me of a murray hewit from flight of the concords.
Wow, exact same thing I was thought the moment he appeared.

Movie was much better than I was expecting and very different as well, but I went into it with little more understanding than "it's a sci fi movie people are speaking very highly of."

I'd definitely recommend it to people, but would probably be selective in who I said that to. I.e., I expect it to resonate with certain chords.

Chocolate - If you like martial arts movies, this is the next one you have to see. It's on Netflix insta-watch. I'll never throw things at the short bus kids again.

Ghost Story - 3/5- pretty enjoyable film of old people who "did something bad" and have a ghost haunting them. The ghost being Alice Krige who is pretty hot in the 80s, played Christabella in the silent hill film. Anyways the story is pretty interesting on what they did and the son's backstory of the girl. No jump scares because the score slowly picks up when the action/tension are building so you are never caught off guard. For a "scary" film its very lowkey. There are some decent makeup/practical effects of the ghost which might be worth while.

I saw Gamer. That movie was trippy as fuck. I don't know if it was good or bad, but it was definitely interesting.

Subs on a movie in the theaters? Did you watch a pirated download?

The Final Destination (in 3D)

Its what you would expect. Basically the same as the other 3. Some of the deaths were pretty funny. It was enjoyable in 3D with stuff popping out at you. If you liked the others, you'll like this.

A quality R5 version of the film was uploaded this weekend, some with subs, some without. On a unrelated note...

District_nine_ver2.jpg

District 9 (2009)

One of the more original films I've seen this year. I loved it. A Sci-Fi mockumentary, with themes of xenophobia and social segregation. Like the trailers, I don't want to give too much away, but it's a great, great film. It's funny, sad, dramatic, and very exciting. With this being Neill Blomkamp's debut feature film, he is definitely a director to look out for in the future. In his first film, he's created a Sci-Fi classic, and a mockumentary style that felt so real.

I'm sure you can't mention shit about pirating movies. Whether it be District 9 or Aliens in the Attic, its unacceptable..unless its in the OTT and followed by

I'm on strike with Peter Jackson projects until he puts out a LOTR extended edition Blu-Ray box set. Not that theatrical bullshit. He's just trying to milk the Hobbit. Same way those James Bond box sets would mysteriously disappear and be brought back with new packaging whenever they needed to whore out a Brosnan era Bond movie.

saw gamer. good mindless action movie and was what you thought it'd be. BUT sims+cs = win!

it also reminds us that on the internet: men are men, women are men, children are fbi agents

I doubt it is solely up to Peter Jackson to release something like that.

Five_minutes_of_heaven.jpg

Five Minutes of Heaven (2009)

A tense Irish drama about the killing of 19-year-old Jim Griffin, by 17-year-old Alistair Little in 1975, and the meeting between Alistair Little and Jim's younger brother, Joe Griffin, 33 years later. Liam Neeson plays Alistair Little, and James Nesbitt plays Joe Griffen. Both Neeson and Nesbitt give strong performances as the two leads. It's more about the emotional result of the troubles in Northern Ireland, than the political side.

Next Day Air (2009)

Black comedies...my wife just loves them. I agreed to watch this because of Donald Faison (Turk from Scrubs) and Mos Def being in it, who I both like, and very surprisingly it wasn't bad at all. It was damn fun, actually. It's an action comedy, not to be taken seriously at all, about two inept criminals, (Mike Epps and Wood Harris), mistakenly receiving a package of cocaine, and thinking they've hit the jackpot, triggering a funny series of events. The whole cast is pretty entertaining. Considering how low my expectations were for this, it was awesome compared to a lot of other crap from 2009.

Zero Effect - I saw this years ago and loved it. Fast forward to today 2nd (or maybe third) time around it was just ok.

"I've been awake for three days. Three... Just love those amphetamines. Got to love them. Got to."

seen ALOT of movies this weekend..

shoot em up - 10/10. over the top action..awesome!
children of men - 10/10
Ponyo-10/10. started off weird but its really good, IMO
ki ki's delivery service - 7/10
terror house - 9/10. almost a 10/10 but this movie is FUN.
live free or die hard - 10/10. bruce willis and explosions..win.
there will be blood - 9/10. powerful movie. i hate dramas but the way this story was told was really captivating. Music is superb.
TMNT - 8/10..decent..splinters voice is all screwed up..
district 9 - saw 40 minutes then wifey got nauseous and had to leave...seemed good tho.

I read some of this thread and i have to say to people that liked
The guru and Zohan...you guys are CRAZY. these movies were the worst i have ever seen from these 2 funny guys. Seriously, these are the worst movies of adam sandler and mike meyers ever made. utter TRASH!

The Mist
Surprisingly entertaining. Great creature effects. Like nearly all Stephen King stories, though, the ending was bullshit.

Feast
Good stupid fun. Excellent lesson in how to make a single-set, low budget monster movie. The script could've used some polish, though, and I wish Jason Mewes had lived longer.

The Final Destination in 3D
Absolute garbage.

You should watch the sequels, Feast 2: Sloppy Seconds (2008), and Feast 3: The Happy Finish (2009).

State_of_Play_theatrical_poster.jpg

State of Play (2009)

Great political thriller with Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck as the strong leads, and "comedic" actors Jeff Daniels and Jason Bateman in good supporting roles. Crowe always demands attention in his films, and he does not disappoint in this. This is Affleck's best film in a long time.

Echelon_conspiracy_poster.jpg

Echelon Conspiracy (2009)

Did you see last year's Eagle Eye, with Shia LaBeouf? Then this film will give you a very strong sense of deja vu. If liked Eagle Eye, and don't mind the repeat feeling, then you should like this. Both films are totally ridiculous, but I also found both fun. The way they solved the problem at the end of Echelon Conspiracy is especially ludicrous.

The Informers (2009)

I had to turn this shit off after 20 minutes. Boring, boring, superficial, boring, worthless crap.

Didn't realize it was part of a trilogy. I'll add those to my Netflix. Thanks!

I haven't seen it yet, but it's one of my favorite Bret Easton Ellis books. It boggles my mind that people hate the movie as much as the reviews seem to indicate. I remain cautiously optimistic.

BUMP

9 - 3/5 - 9 has a very cool style. The film has a great looking world in the same way Fallout 3 is a great environment. minor
the monsters in the film are awesome. the snake monster is very creative how is attacks moves, everything about it is very thought out and very cool.
7 is very much Altair but in woman form. Which is super badass. The action scenes are pretty enjoyable. Nothing you haven't seen before but a fun ride. The problem with 9 is the story. It isn't that great and on top of that you get near zero character development. You really dont feel much for the characters. I think I enjoyed a few characters but its because you recognized the voice actor. 9 is very much a kids movie. I can see myself loving this film if i was 14-16yo. Its not a pixar film which can be seen and adored by all. Its easy to love the style of 9 but its difficult to find much more enjoyment beyond that.

I watch too many movies, I know...

Back to the Future Trilogy Ah, the classics never get old. Watching these movies helped me get over my cold today, so I'm guessing they have some curative powers.

Did they fix the trilogy? When it was originally released they really fucked it up, like missing scenes by only having part of the footage shown.

Those have been fixed for ages. Even years ago you could mail off the messed up discs for replacement ones.

I suppose one could still stumble across and old, non-corrected box set. Just google for info on how to tell from the UPC etc. whether it's the fixed version. IIRC it's having a "v2" on it somewhere or the "new low price!" sticker.

One hell of a weird film. For the whole film, it only has two actors, Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg, as "He" and "She", a couple who, after the death of their child, retreat to a cabin in the woods where they encounter strange and terrifying occurrences. I could totally understand people finding this boring, especially the first hour or so, which was really slow, but there was just something I liked about it. It was very cold and eerie, in a similar way to David Lynch's Eraserhead. The last 45 minutes of the film has some seriously fucked up scenes. The two most fucked up scenes are:

She crushes He's genitals with a block of wood, with the pain driving him unconscious. While He is still unconscious, She masturbates him until he orgasms, ejaculating blood onto her shirt and face. You get to see the erect penis as this happens.
She takes a pair of rusty scissors and cuts off her own clitoris. This is shown up close.

Watch it if you want to see an original, but disturbing, film.

Okay I'm glad I read that, I don't think I want to see those spoilers on screen. The first hour sounds cool to me.
