Surprisingly the Last Movie You Saw Didn't Suck

I agree with Get Smart being a suprise hit. My wife and I are really on the opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to movies, but we both loved this movie. LOL funny in multiple parts.

Wall-E. I was distracted and I couldn't see this movie that well because I watched it at a drive in so I missed the small details. I still enjoyed it but I'm going to have to watch it again before I make any decision on it being Pixar's best.

There Will Be Blood. I liked it but I think all the praise and acclaim it has gotten hyped it up too much for me. I can't help but think it's overrated, although still very good.
Into the Wild - Wow, crap on a cracker. I can't believe people bought into this movie. Visually pleasing; beautifully aesthetic, but the overall character and plot are just garbage.

It's just the story of a selfish, self-centered, arrogant, angst ridden, uncaring young man who never owned up and accepted his issues with himself and life. Rather than comign to terms with himself and others around him, the film showcases an "adventure" and makes it seem as though it something which should be emulated, when Chris is merely running away from his problems. Chris can be interpreted as having mental illness, not some great existential, mystic spiritual journey. The movie so wants to be good, but the way it presents its story and it protagonist as worthwhile individuals, while being oblivious to their true faults just makes the film seem mindless. His death should never have been shown as an actual and worthwhile vision quest. Everyone's been screwed over/up by their folks, but that's part of life, but clearly not part of the "Supertramp lifestyle," and doesn't give one any reason to behave the way he did towards his parents, and especially his sister.
That's pretty much the way this movie/book is. Some people sympathize with Chris and find the story moving and uplifting, others view him the way you did and hate it.

I have this type of discussion over the movie, in a journalism class where the book was an assigned reading we discussed in class etc.

But you should fault the book, rather than the film as the film is very true to the books portrayal of McCandless. Krakauer was very sympathetic to him as he'd taken similar journeys into the wild, mountain climing etc. to get away from society at times in his life.
I can relate to being distracted while wacthing Wall-E. At the theater there was this mother and child who would not shut up. they keep talking to the screen screaming Wall-E! Wall-E!! as if he could hear them.:bomb:

I never read the book, but I don't care who I have to blame, the movie/story/protagonist are sentimentalist shit. The movie is aesthetically a thing of beauty, and filmed excellently, but the overall story is just crap when you woo yourself away from that amazement for a sec. I guess I'm just mostly maddened by the fact it was on so many people's top 10 list of last year, hailed by so many people, recommended so often, and just clamored to. It's not an underrated hit, and there's a reason why it was a dud at the box office. Oh well, in time it'll be cleared out and straightened out. Eventually it won't even be remembered for how great it supposedly is and will drop back into obscurity.

There Will Be Blood, alongside No Country For Old Men, are probably the 2 best movies I saw all of last year. Sorry if I'm one who hyped those two, but those two are two that actually deserve the hyping.
The Great Escape. Yeah, its from the 60's, but I only recently saw it, and loved it.
the great escape is flipping awesome. it's long, but totally worth it. steve mcqueen and an all star cast (for the time). i have a great escape poster that is bad ass as well. definitely holds up to the test of time.

Again, it's just a movie/book that people either love or hate based on whether they sympathize with Chris, or think he's an arrogant moron like you did.

Definitely in my top 10 of last year, and the book is one of my favorites as well. But I can see how others would hate it for not sympathizing with Chris.

Into the Wild is definitely not in my top 10 for last year, but I guess you figured that one out

Anyway, Memento Mori - another crappy film. Boring.

Hellboy 2 - Loved it! Then again, I love anything Hellboy. Still, I would have loved it more if Roger had been in it and if they had adapted Conqueror Worm for the screen finally.

Into the Wild was in my Top 5 of last year.

Truly great cinema should be good whether you agree with the point or not. That was a beautiful film even if you didn't like the point.

Just finished Before The Devil Knows You're Dead on Blu-ray.

It was excellent, nearly perfect, actually. Philip Seymour Hoffman is just incredible in it.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention how wonderful Marisa Tomei's boobs are, as well.
One of my favorite films from my youth.

"Send more brains."
I don't remember that line, I only recall "Send more paramedics" and "Send more cops". My one friend, who isn't a fan of zombie movies, or low budget gore movies, thought it was a pretty awesome movie. Trash's strip show probably helped.

I guess my memory has failed me. Maybe it was in the sequel? Heck of a good time either way.

uhh....no. If I wanted to see a documentary, then I'd go watch the discovery channel. The film is shot good, not as tremendously great as some would have it. I mean come one, that whole bullshit scene with the apple where he's like "I'm supertramp, and you're super apple, you're organic, let's have sex" and breaks the 4th wall was bullshit. Up until there, I thought the movie was great, even with the character and plot flaws. That's like I said, the first 30-40 minutes were great. Then it's all downhill and just gets worse.

Also, great cinema has to be great on all levels, not just on some. It's the reason why Jaws or Star Wars or The Godfather are considered classics. Into the Wild is hardly a classic, or bears any resemblence of one.

Could be in a sequel, I haven't seen though. How are they, I heard they were completely terrible bullshit.

The Descent (or was it just, Descent)

I made the mistake of sort of half paying attention to it and got the shit scared out of me. I jumped up off the couch. Overall it was decent. Towards the end...
you start seeing too much of the cave people. Less is more horror movie directors, less is more.

Last movie I saw did suck...

I cant believe how unbelievably awful The Matrix movies were. It's like when they came out I ignored all it's previous bullshit.

People always think I'm trying to be different when I say that I didn't like those films.

I think the first one would have been a little better, if they had manned up and ended the film / the series, right then and there... but Hollywood both

Tongan Ninja. I thought this movie would suck, but I was pleasantly surprised. Written by 1/2 of the Flight of the Conchords, I should have known what I was expecting.
"You fight like a baby. A dead baby!"
"Your father was eaten by a fish!"
But the last movie I saw did suck. I cannot get over how disappointing Hellboy 2 was... Perhaps Pan's Labyrinth was a fluke.
Did you see the first Hellboy?

Last one for me was Goldfinger.
Have you read the book? It's pretty awesome.
No I haven't but it indeed does look awesome. I added it to my wish list although I'm sure if I do get it, it'll join my backlog of books, movies, and games.
Batman Begins was enjoyable...
never heard of 'scarecrow' though
Then you must've never watched those old Challenge of the Superfriends type cartoons growing up...

My latest... Identity... decent in places
Sky High .. was on the damn disneyt channel and i couldnt stop watching it...really not a bad movie
I went and saw WALL-E last night, it was the perfect date movie with the wife. Why is it that the best love story I have seen in a few years was an animation flick?

:p
Have you seen it, or are you just talking out of you ass? It's actually not bad. Plus, it has Bruce Campbell;):D
