Tales from Good Will / Salvation Army 2008

I fought off an old Hispanic lady for a Platinum $8 GameCube earlier tonight. Figured I could make at least $10-$15 off of it.

Same store had two PS1's for $25 each with no controllers. What a bunch of bull.

:applause: Good going. You fought off an old Hispanic woman so you could get something to resell, when she might've been buying it for....oh I don't know....someone in her family to PLAY.

:applause::applause::applause: Keep up the good work.
I guess this is the place for this.

Anyways, I was out at Deseret Industries with my mom, helping her find some furniture she needed. While looking around, I found a killer find: A fat PlayStation 2 for $40! No tax to boot!

Since the store did not have any memory cards I had to run by Dimple Records to get a used one, which was $16 with tax. While there, I priced their used fat PS2's: $79.99

So, for $56 I got myself a PlayStation 2!
I got a working fat PS2 at Deseret Industries for $15 a few weeks ago.

I don't know if this is a deal or not but I bought a sealed copy of major's mask for $30. Just hope it is worth something someday... One auction on evay has it going for $60+
went to goodwill yesterday, where they normally have a bunch of video games, and all they had was a wired XBOX360 guitar hero controller for $90.
I don't know if that makes me want to laugh, cry, or do a combination of both.

I gotta go there when you guys do. All i ever see there is old sports titles in that glass case. I did get COD4 for pc for 7.00 there tho.

Yeah after todays visit to my Goodwill Im almost starting to hate it. They rarely have games anymore and theyre $4 apiece when they have some, then they have PS1s and N64s at $25 now when I just got that orange N64 2 weeks ago for $15. They even charge an extra $5-$8 for the controller that came with the system. They also had a Gamecube with no cables, controllers, or the bottom port covers for $15. The only thing I picked up was Pilot Wings 64 for $4.

this is EXACTLY how my goodwill is. on the rare instance where they have games of any kind, they're at least $5 (if not more) and systems are never less than $25, no matter if they have cables, controllers, or anything. it's wretched.

don't take a gamble on bare systems that are more then $10 over there. If it turns out to be a doorstop you get no refund.

Assholes can't even find an ac adapter in one of those wire bins they have and see if it at least powers up.

you seriously expect GW/SA employees to seek out a PSU for each electronic device, making sure of the proper polarity, voltage and, amperage with each one, in order to test? if anything, you'd end up with a bunch of fried consoles, as they randomly tried any old plug.

It may not be video game related but I picked up a brand new 8" digital picture frame for $20 at my local GW. Works great and looks nice.

They had some games this week, nothing worth it though. They wanted $45 for Saints Row 2 for the 360....

Recent Goodwill Pickups:

PS2 ($25)

A big plastic bag full of Magic: The Gathering Cards ($2)

Atari 2600 and Colecovision Games: ($2 each)

Pac-Man
Night Driver
Casino
Donkey Kong
Space Invaders (x2)
Combat
Defender

NES Games: ($3 each)

Kid Niki
Kid Icarus
Spy Hunter
Double Dragon
Super C
The Legend of Kage

A bunch of Japanese Doraemon VHS tapes (!?!) ($2 each)
A bunch of anime VHS tapes ($2 each)

Thats over the last two weeks. Now I feel pretty stupid about that shopgoodwill rant thread I made a while ago

What are the best times to hit up goodwills? I figure when garage sales are over, that's when people dump off all of their unsold stuff. How long does it take for that stuff to hit the floor?

YMMV on if or when it ever does hit the floor. Especially if its a good game and that location has employees who are gamers then you are just out of luck.

things pretty much never work that fast. it's often at least a day or two before new drop-offs hit the floor.

Found a couple of decent things today:

:gc: Animal Crossing w/2 memory cards - $2.99
:gc: Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life w/memory card - $3.99
:gc: Robotech: Battlecry - $2.99

...all complete. I figured for $10 they'd be worth adding to the collection.

As I was helping the lady look through the giant CD holder, I saw some PC-CD rom with some anime girls on it and a big ol' "ADULTS ONLY" label on it. Needlesstosay I grabbed it and added it to the total (it was only $0.99). I haven't the slightest idea what the name is, but Peach Princess is the company.

What? Don't give me that look. ;)

Apparently Peach Princess has released quite a few AO PC games, including one result that came back including Hentai within it. So, take your pick and keep looking till you find which one you grabbed.

I found the following at my closest SA store today:

Prince Of Persia: Sands of Time guide: $.49
Ms. Pacman: Maze Madness(PS1)-complete + MINTY-$2

The POP guide has the back insert out and the whole guide has a bit of a bend to it, but if anyone needs it, it'll be on my TL. Not sure about the Ms. Pacman game as of yet though.

I also picked up a Genesis system and a controller for it(3 button) for $2.12 after tax from a local thrift store. All in all, not a bad day for ONCE.
Let me google that for you.
I always thought there was another name for the TurboGrafx 16, but I had completely forgotten they also called it that as well.

As for me, I cleaned up the Genny and controller I picked up from a local shop last week, now I just have to test them out.

By the way, why does it always seem like EVERY damned controller I buy has this weird brown 'muck' on it(or rather in all of the crevices of the controller). I'm sure it's probably just dried sweat from an intense gaming session, but I mean DAMN, EVERY fuckin' controller I buy has it on it.

A couple Q-tips and paper towels dampened with rubbing alcohol later though and no more dirty controllers.

I got a japanese pc engine, in Seattle international district GW...

Sometimes you are lucky.... and sometimes you are not. In this case....

Yep, good luck on that score. $5.95 each in mint condition. Too bad there was no FF7 to be found but oh well.

Picked up the following items with a span of 2 weeks
NES with a game inside for 9.99
Looney toons laser disc vol 1 and 2 for 14.99 each
Gemini turntable for 39.99
Muzzy Spanish set unopen for 9.99
Jordan 1's for 12.99
Jordan 9's for 7.99
Ps2 network adaptor brand new in box 14.99
Sega genesis all hookups for 14.99
Atari flashback 7.99

Saw the following at Goodwill today.

Platinum Gamecube (AC adapter only) - $39.99
PS1 (AC & RGA only) - $24.99
Xbox (AC adapter only) - $39.99
360 Rock Band Strat (original) - $14.99
A bunch of random PS2 games, only ones that weren't sports were Rule Of Red and one of the Full Metal Alchemist games for $9.99 each.

Update on an earlier post:

My $40 PS2 from Deseret Industries had a non-functioning DVD drive. As in I could put a disc into it and the drive would do nothing at all. I returned it and despite their no-returns policy I got a full refund.

FYI I later found out that they don't even check this stuff to see if it works before putting it up for sale. Same with movies, CD's, etc.

I did pick up a brand new queen sized air mattress with rechargeable pump (clearanced and salvaged from Target) for $10 today. :)

Most of the employees probably don't have any idea how to turn it on.

yeah my Goodwill sucks now. There use to be something interesting almost every time I went but ive only gotten 1 thing this month. They were trying to charge $3 for the nintendo video cable that probably came in with the Gamecube thats been sitting there almost a month. Of course the $15 and $25 PS1s are still sitting there. They mustve hired someone who is into games and just takes everything or they noticed how Id come in and buy that stuff up so they hired the prices.

I'm going back 1 more time to get some of the WWF wrestling VHS tapes they had if they have any left. Someone dumped their whole collection off. Only problem is they want $1.99 each. If they were a buck i'd bought them all. I got wrestlemania 14 with case and the original panflet ppv guide it came with. Tape is mint. $1.

Maybe they seen my posts on here and are gonna suprise me.

In my opinion that type a deal is 10 times better than any video game deal you can find. Nice score.

Today's SA finds:

NES games:
The Legend of Zelda (grey cart)
Burgertime
Toobin' (unlicensed!)

Genesis games:
Pit-Fighter (cart only)
Mortal Kombat 3

Unlike last time when I was told games are $3 each, this time they were $2. The grey Zelda cart is apparently from the Classic Series and is a bit rarer than the gold cart. Neat, I guess.

Passed on Madden 94, 95, 96, and Joe Montana Football, even though they all had cases.

At a small local thrift store I picked up for the Dreamcast

Tomb Raider The Last Revelation
Sonic Shuffle
Web Browser 2.0

for 3 dollars

The Goodwill I usually go to has pretty outrageous prices. Think $10 for CIB Sonic 2. I did find these cart only Genesis games in a bag marked 4.95, though, and I snatched them up to add to my collection.

DSCI0011Medium.jpg

Outrun
Hard Drivin'
RBI Baseball 4
Evander "Real Deal" Holyfield's Boxing
Battleship
Maximum Carnage

No rare games, but an ok haul.

I found a couple of neo-geo controllers today
at a Salvation Army for $5 a piece.

Never seen that stuff before...too bad no system or games though lol.

I Picked up T3 last night. I was SO damn happy to get it home and watch it. SO, I get it home, pop it on.....fucking BOOTLEGGED CAM COPY! I was like.....seriously? So needless to say I called them today and told them..listen this is a bootlegged copy that somebody burned to disc. I want my money back. They didn't say "Oh no refunds" they took it back. They said they wanted proof so i showed it to them on one of there own DVD players and TV. They were amazed really. So needless to say, I got The ORIGINAL Star Wars Trilogy on VHS. Now to find my VHS player that has good outputs to the Surround Sound Reviver I'll be set.

Kudos. I'm a WWF VHS collector as well. Sadly, I seldom find them at Goodwills or Salvation Army's. The majority of mine came from a video store going out of business. I was dropping 4 for $12 on them, last day they go $1 and bust out a box full of the SEALED clamshell cases (WF001 into the 30's). I had $5 by that point and blew it all.

I hit up the Goodwill in my old town today. I got Wall Street Kid for $2.97 CIB and the Rock Band USB hub still sealed (Target leftover) for $1.99. As I went to check out, I saw another one in their display case for $5.99.

Also on the way out, I picked up a Power Rangers SPD DVD for my nephews for $2.97. It was a video store ex-rental, but in really good shape considering. Plus, pretty much all of these non-movie Power Ranger DVDs are like freakin' $10-ish used on amazon.

They had all the BK XBox games and Scaler for the XBox for $2.97. I passed on all of them at that price. Oh, and a PSOne controller for $4.97... I couldn't believe that. Hell, they were $2.97 like two or three months before and I thought that was a bit steep.

Half of the VHS rack was filled with them. They had just about every PPV from 1995-1998 and they also had some of the biography tapes from mick foley and the rock, and hulk hogan. summerslam 1997, survivor series 1995-1997, Vader, one night only 1997, all the bret hart house shows etc. Suprised to see those there

the older ones from 1993 and earlier are pretty hard to find nowadays, especially the Coliseum home video releases. I see alot of them on ebay going for $15 and up on occasion.

I found a nice one at goodwill today. Zelda: Majora's Mask and Metroid Prime 2 for 4.99 each. They had a ton of N64 games, including Mario 64, Goldeneye, Ocarina of time, Diddy Kong Racing, etc. Had I not been short on cash, I would have picked them all up, but I did hide a copy of NES Ghosts 'n' Goblins to pick up tomorrow.

If they still have the N64 games there on Friday, I'll pick them all up. I think thats asking for too much, though.

Do the WWF VHS Tapes have value on eBay still now that WWF has pretty much released all their major PPVs on DVD now, and included nearly every important match that has ever occurred on various DVDs now as well, as well as the On Demand channel. I have a bunch of old WWF VHS tapes I might get rid of if I can get a decent amount for them.

The ones that stay high in value are any of the WWF scratch mark logo stuff that the now WWE has had to digitally blur/edit. Along with anything that the WWE hasn't had to edit such as music licencing issues and the like. I have a few late WWF VHS tapes that never got released on DVD. Two I can think of on the top of my head are Best Of RAW Volume 3 and two highlight videos on Chris Jericho and Kurt Angle.

My SA has dried recently.

Good finds for 2009 so far include:

All are mint/complete...

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II (GC) - $3
Zelda: Wind Waker - $3
Zelda: Twilight Princess - $3
Super Smash Bros Brawl - $3
Bushido Blade 2 (PS1) - $3
Parasite Eve 2 (PS1) - $3

Curiously enough, I passed on a scratched, disc only copy of GTA: Vice City (PS2) for $3. ;)

Well the Salvation Army here has over priced everything. I mean everything. I swear, once somebody says one thing, it's like somebody hears it and marks up everything. They now want 5 dollars for a freaking Sports Simulation game for the SNES. and most of the Genesis games are all sports and they want 8 bucks for them. I'm done with this Salvation army and moving onto crappier ones.
