to be perfectly honest between all the stupid hats and the microtransactions this is a perfect study on how to completely ruin an otherwise good game.
making it free after all that (since I already own it) and bringing in a bunch of annoying noobs is just another slap in the face to me.
at the very least make the free players only be able to play against each other.
inb4igetflamed for speaking the truth.

You are 100% right about this. I been a TF2 owner since summer of 2008 so I know all the work which went onto this game. It used to be a great FPS game until they turned it into this Korean MMO type game with all the hats and microtransactions. It's a completely different game nowadays that has become nothing like it used to be. Plus yeah, since it's free you will bring in every jackass and 12 year old (not complaining about bad players, complaining about all the idiots they will bring in because it' free) since they don't need to pay for it, making the community worse than it is already.
I miss the old tf2 days which were fun.
You two are

ing idiots. THE HATS DON'T AFFECT GAMEPLAY. NEITHER DOES THE STORE. And if you're playing on a server where trading disrupts gameplay, then you're on the wrong server.
Seriously, I don't understand the argument that cosmetic items ruin a game somehow, or that having the option to buy weapons instead of obtaining them from crafting or drops (remember kiddies, everything that affects gameplay can be obtained in-game FOR FREE) does.
The game plays the same as it always has. If you already own it and don't want to put any more money into it, you don't need to. Not a cent.
So far, I haven't run into ANY new players on my favorite servers. Because of the way Valve set up the interface, most of the new players will probably end up playing on the new Valve servers that the new menu will dump you into automatically unless you select a specific server.
Ignore these

tards, and give the game a shot on its own merits.
You are right, TF2 is better then CoD in that way but I think Halo does a better job of easing players into the game with their ranked match difficulty system. The way I got a handle of the mechanics in TF2 was playing a medic and just watching how others play their class. It got me up to speed on abilities and map structuring to be team support.
The game DOES have training modes now, including some class-specific ones. Unfortunately, I can't attest to their usefulness or lack thereof.
Also, the new Valve servers that you get when you just choose a gameplay mode from the main menu (at least last night) had a much lower quality of competition. Start with those, maybe.
I know I'll kick up some angry "loyal" TF2 players by asking, but since we're all gamers, try not to hate too much.
If I were to play this on my laptop, could I use my 360 controller w/wireless PC adapter? I know it's not as good as a mouse, but seeing as I'd rather play someplace comfy like my couch/chair/bed, that doesn't really go with a mouse/laptop-keyboard setup.
You can use the 360 controls with the PC game, yes. You may be at a bit of a disadvantage because it's just flat-out easier to aim with a mouse (there's a reason why we don't have PC/console multiplayer), but give it a shot.
