Team Fortress 2 - Free to play....FOR-EV-ER...FOR-EV-ER...FOR-EV-ER

"to be perfectly honest between all the stupid hats and the microtransactions this is a perfect study on how to completely ruin an otherwise good game.

making it free after all that (since I already own it) and bringing in a bunch of annoying noobs is just another slap in the face to me.

at the very least make the free players only be able to play against each other.

inb4igetflamed for speaking the truth."
I miss the old TFC days. Those conc jumping maps were awesome! I got rid of my gaming PC before TF2 came out, and no one's ever really sold me on getting TF2 for my 360...
Hell no. Grenade spams killed TFC for me. Thank god TF2 doesn't have 'em.

Now people will complain even more you know complaints increase 1000% when a game goes to free2play. (so does made up statistics)
Hell no. Grenade spams killed TFC for me. Thank god TF2 doesn't have 'em.
Haha well to each his own. I wasn't aware they pulled grenades in TF2. If I had a gaming PC I prob wouldn't bother downloading it for free knowing that. Is TFC completely dead now?
The game DOES have training modes now, including some class-specific ones. Unfortunately, I can't attest to their usefulness or lack thereof.

Also, the new Valve servers that you get when you just choose a gameplay mode from the main menu (at least last night) had a much lower quality of competition. Start with those, maybe.
The training modes aren't good. Theyre incredibly boring/slow and actually turned me off to the game. I found just jumping into the multiplayer was a better teacher and it was pretty rough in the beginning. Highlight of TF2 is the TF2 community, those people were pretty helpful when I had questions in game and were only mildly offensive when I shot them by mistake.

The valve servers sound amazing and weren't around when I was playing. Glad they added that, I'll definitely be playing on those when I reinstall the game.

haha at the two noobs flaming me.

if you think this wont add to the griefing and cheating then you are totally naive. Yes valve says they will do something about it if people who keep getting banned keep trying to play. Im not believing it one bit. Also if you dont think being on a team full of bad new players isn't annoying and getting owned because of it, you are probably only playing for the hats anyway.

The problem with the hats has nothing to do with the hats themselves, its the players they attract to the game.

I know of 3 servers, 1 which is almost always fully populated and two others that sometimes pull in enough players to get rid of all the AI bot "players". Most of the other servers that appear populated at first are really just full of those AI bots. It has seen better days, and I regret not being around at its prime time since nowadays it seems like 2fort is the only map that gets played. Not a bad map, but some more variety would be nice. It's also possible that there's a better server or two out there but that they're too far away from me to get a good ping to them.

As for TF2, I really enjoyed it for a good 6 months of playing everyday when it originally came out with the Orange Box, but then one day I just stopped playing it. It's good that more folks get to enjoy it now, I guess I just burned myself out on it. I tried it out again last year and it was fun again for all of 2 or 3 days, and then I didn't feel like playing it again. Nowadays it also seems like every server out there has those reserved slots, practically turning it into a MMO just to play since otherwise I got kicked off more often than I was able to actually play. That really turned me off from returning to the game since I don't feel that any FPS game has ever been worth a monthly fee, let alone just for access to one server.

you know what sucks, i downloaded this yesterday, played through the training, got to the multiplayer part then my computer crashed. A little research proved that my video card had died on me, and now i cant play TF2 without epic lag. sucks because it was pretty fun too

I don't mind it being free to play, but I fuckING HATE the crafting changes. Revert my crafting back, damnit! I NEED MY HAT SIMULATOR!
What's different now with the crafting?
Insane recipe restrictions now... it is a lot harder to get metal, can't just toss 2 weapons in the window and click craft. :/

I didn't see any weird restrictions, I can still craft metal from two class weapons, just the whole crafting menu is different.

That aside, the only extreme crafting case to come out of this update is the new Medic melee weapon requiring EIGHT jarate (literally jars of pee) and a reclaimed. Odds are the drop system will lean towards the newer weapons for awhile. I already got two of the new weapons.

I miss the old TF days, and 3wave CTF for that matter. Quake really was the golden age of FPS, we're still playing slight variations of it and its mods 15 years later.

Great news, I enjoyed it on the 360 but never tried the PC version. Will see how it runs on the laptop quit pc gaming many many years ago. :D

It restricts smelting to the types of weapons now. Before any 2 weapons = scrap, now it's 2 of the same, 2 primary of a class, etc. Not just 2 weapons.
why is it fail? :(
Because there is a section for free stuff, this is the deals section. If it were .1 cent then thats a deal but if its free then well, thats free and goes in the free section.

Even though I sucked at it, 3wave CCTF on Quake 3 was just fun as hell. Since it was based off of Quake 2 CTF I wish I could've played that back then, but just like TFC, I didn't have the right computer for it.

God I loved grappling someone then axing them to death. Or better, grappling someone who was already grappling someone and the rollercoaster ride that followed...

Really, cause people playing TF2 won't play those games also? TF2 is pretty fun you are missing out.

Also gargus you're late, I thought you would have been here to bitch about this thread at least 2 pages ago.

Yeah, clearly I'm a noob.

The hats haven't changed a single goddamn thing about the servers I've played on. Personal experience tells me you're wrong, because NOBODY PLAYS A VIDEO GAME FOR HATS.

As far as the griefing and cheating goes, there are already server plugins to ban free accounts (which I don't agree with), and it's as easy as ever for admins to kick and ban. There are solutions to the problem, and until I begin to see it negatively impacting the game (here's a hint: I haven't yet), I refuse to believe bullshit claims like that.
It restricts smelting to the types of weapons now. Before any 2 weapons = scrap, now it's 2 of the same, 2 primary of a class, etc. Not just 2 weapons.
I'm pretty sure it's always been that way. Crafting would be WAY too easy otherwise.
I know of 3 servers, 1 which is almost always fully populated and two others that sometimes pull in enough players to get rid of all the AI bot "players". Play with the server browser and try new servers. If it's full of bots, blacklist. And you can sort by map - most of the servers I play on almost never run 2Fort because everyone's sick of it.

Agreed, but it's heavily dependent on the server. The community is usually pretty good, but you also get douchebags like the one I ran into today who was calling everyone on the team every nasty name in the book because we were losing...while he finished with three points as a sniper. On a King of the Hill map, with lots of easy targets.
Oh I never had a problem with hats or the store. My problem was when I was playing this game heavily, it would take me a painfully long time to get an item, and when I did it would be one of the same 5 items most of the time. It really annoyed me seeing that I was getting the same items over and over. Sure I could of just crafted them but I was still getting items so painfully slow it was taking me forever to even get anywhere, where other people I played with would be getting items a lot faster. I can't play the game now due to my gfx card dying, and the game is still a fun game, I just don't like the whole "randomness" of the item system because I never had any luck with it. At it's core, it's still one of the best FPS's on the PC.
The hats part was mostly directed at the other guy. :)

Everyone gets items at the same rate - 7 to 12 per week, depending on the drop table and if you max out the playtime cap (11 hours-ish before you stop getting drops).

At this point, the item system is tilted against the new players a bit because there's so much in it that the chances of getting any one item are a lot lower than they used to be. There are plenty of places you can go to trade for the ones you want, though, like http://tf2tp.com/.
I'd agree with this if the Demo and Soldier weren't unbelievably OP.
Easy to counter with pyros and airblast reflects. :D
is it possible to add a ps3 or xbox controller to play?
you would be at huge disadvantage with a controller when everyone else is using kb/mouse
you would be at huge disadvantage with a controller when everyone else is using kb/mouse
Who cares, as long as you are having fun. KB/M is too uncomfortable for me to use, so I'll stick with the 360 controller.

@manchildofPV

You have to enable "Developers Console" on the options screen
Then hit the "tilde" key and type in "exec 360controller" without the quotes.

You have fun with those games, because I'll still be playing TF2 long after you stop playing those games.

I never knew that Quake 1 had a normal CTF mod, that's interesting! I was always under the impression that CTF in Quake 1 hit its stride with QWTF, and then a traditional CTF mod was developed when Quake 2 was released. I remember playing QWTF a few times, and it was pretty fun :). Couldn't bhop worth a darn though which held me back since that was a big mechanic.

For those that are new the best map besides the very standard 2fort is "doublecross". I never see servers running it for whatever reason and its imho far better than 2fort. Ive probobly spent over 100 hours in this map alone.

This shooter is (was?) so community based, it was amazing. No one ever talks junk, all just laughs and plain good old fun. Ive never seen much rage quits or anything. Have a headset and mic ready and find yourself a server with good ping and just go there all the time. This isnt black ops. Your not gonna get called noob or what not for sucking.

As many other have, Ive literally played this on and off since day one.

EDIT
The microtransaction part of tf2 is a joke at best. Its never even crossed my mind to spend money on anything and like I said, Ive been around forever. Unlike say, league of legends, where Ive spent like 100 bucks yet its "free to play", lol.
You have fun with those games, because I'll still be playing TF2 long after you stop playing those games.
TF2 is going on four years (came out fall 2007), and still has a thriving, active community even before the free to play change. I can almost guarantee that none of the 360 / PS3 games the guy you quoted listed off will last as long as TF2 has (and will).

This guy gets it. One of the best descriptions of the game I've seen in the topic. :)
still more news than a deal, you going to make a thread for every free to play game?
When an A+ FPS game that was previously retail price goes free, I think it warrants a thread. Pretty sure when all of the WoW killers that went free to play there were threads at least I remember them for LOTR.

Played a few games of this when The Orange Box came out and didn't find it very fun. I'll give it another shot for free though.

It feels slow on the xbox. Idk about how it is on the pc, but I played TF Classic and boy that was fun.. Damn talking about it makes me miss counter strike, 1.5 :p
