Does WWE make their buy-rates public? I'm assuming that they have one PPV for every two weeks because its profitable, regardless of the quality of the actual shows. It sounds like they're spreading themselves a little thin though, and maybe cutting back would increase their overall profits.
I miss the four PPV per year schedule that they used to have. Wrestlemania, Summer Slam, Survivor Series, Royal Rumble. It was a great schedule that always produced memorable events.
They actually did cut the number of ppvs back from 14 to 12. I can't agree more with the notion that the WWE is "spreading themselves thin" Vince is just too greedy for the good of the wrestling product. As long as the bottom line remains unchanged, and by sacrificing quality for quantity it isn't changing, Vince is happy.
I think a monthly ppv is still too much, I'd be interested to see what the unique buyrates between ppvs are. Ya know find out who are the people that are buying every ppv no matter what, vs how many people are just buying certain ones. It'd be interesting to see if further reducing the number of ppvs, down to say 8-10, would diminish Vince's profits, or if the number of people buying those 8-10 ppvs would increase, assuming the product was better, and the buyers had the belief that something might actually happen.
That is the real problem with Cyber Sunday, in embryo it's a terrific idea. The problem lie in the execution and the fact that WWE's brass are too chicken-shit to actually give the fans what they want and let a major title change hands at Cyber Sunday.
