The '2008 is my year to lose weight!' thread

Oh god I just came at the thought of pizza and tacos. Sean I feel like I owe you some kind of money for that

I've started "running" (using one of those weird circular-step kinda machines that I know none of you can picture from my shitty description) 3+ miles a few times a week now. I'm trying to get a more regular schedule right now.

Are those machines that I'm using alright, or would I be better off on a treadmill?

I assume you mean an elliptical, and yes they are GREAT. they take away almost all of the impact on your joints that a treadmill has, I actually burn MORE calories on an elliptical than a treadmill because I can run a lot longer.

There's ellipticals, and there's free runners.

My workout for the next bit is going to be 33 mins on the elliptical, 3 sets of 20 throws with a 12lb medicine ball, and 2.5 miles of hand cycling. We'll see where that gets me. Probably will throw in some leg presses, see if I can hit 350 this month.

There are a few different types of them at my gym though, so I don't know which one will help me the most...
Can anyone tell me what to look for in a good one?

How much have you lost so far? If none, you're fucked.

Also, the part I bolded:....really? Seek help.

Then learn to motivate yourself using lust. There's always time enough for love (- said by Lazarous Long). The best thing you can do for yourself is get fit. The benefits I think would be most obvious:

- you look & feel healthy. Ergo, you will feel happier as a result (probably just the endorphins)
- girls will find your more attractive. Yeah, it's a bit shallow to say that but whoever says 'looks don't matter' hasn't tried to fuck someone like this w/o a lot of money or a lot of booze (probably SFW but not safe for anyone who doesn't know who Brian Peppers is):
brianpepperspf0.jpg
.
- the more girls you attract, the more options you have so that you don't have time to pine over one girl in an ocean of girls.
- the more girls you spend time with (intimately or otherwise) help develop your social skills so you're more adept at being a skilled lover & companion which in turn help you attract even more girls in a positively recursive loop.
- the more girls you interact with, the better you get at discerning the kind of girls you like & don't like and will benefit your search for that one true love.

Losing 100 by June is possible but I highly doubt it's healthy. Far better to actually work out on a consistent basis for the rest of your life so that you are healthy in the long run; not just for the sake of one girl.

Getting a girl can be good motivation, losing one can be even better. I lost over 75lbs in 2001 after a bad breakup. Wasn't healthy, though.

Damn do I miss Ephedra, though.

Hey Jay.... that was really inspiring :)
I can lose it by June... I have done it before.... I'm just alone out here, and everyone I know plays WoW. Somehow I got sucked into that world :(

I'm going to do it though. You are 110% right.

Thanks man!!!

Just try and do it as healthy as possible because what you eat also affects your mood. If you down 3 gorditas from Taco B w/ a side of cheese fries, you'll feel bloated and therefore a bit lazy & maybe even guilty for doing it. This can make you depressed which can then lead to further bad eating. Then you keep falling into a downward spiral of depression & bad eats. Remember, everything in moderation, from WoW to food to pining for girls, and yes, even moderation. Again, good luck.

woot, broke the 180 mark...was 179.2

now if the handles would disappear i'd be good....slowly but steadily.

And to the guy dropping 100 pounds by June. If you're doing it for a girl...which I'm guessing you mean looks based remember to work out. Don't wanna look like that dude from Thinner.

Oh god, I want a buffet of tacos with pepperoni pizza.
Then having a box of donuts after. ..

Man. Diets can be brutal.... :whistle2:(

Does anyone have any recommendations for food supplements? I find that I am immensely hungry in the morning, even after I eat a decent breakfast. By lunch time I am a raving ball of starvation. Needless to say, this isn't helping my weight loss efforts one bit.

I take protein in the mornings and I find myself not that hungry until lunch. Sometimes I only drink the protein and that does me good, but if I eat say...a bowl of cereal (which is usually my breakfast) coupled with a glass of protein I'm usually good until lunch.

Think I've finally ended my desire for fast food during lunch (was usually once or twice a week). Was introduced to Safeway's signature sandwiches, and while I don't know the exact health facts about them, they certainly seem more healthier.

Hail Caeser sandwich with ciabata bread. NOM NOM NOM.

I've also seemed to hit the 155 pound mark. Ironically I haven't done any exercising since early January or so (though I've sped up my natural walking pace a bit). Yay metabolism.

I usually get it without the caeser spread. I'm assuming it's just as "deadly" so I don't bother with it most of the time.

I don't really want to lose weight, just the fat. I'm around 200 and I've always been a skinny bastard, so it's nice to have a little meat on me. I'm not "fat" by any means. I'm like 6'3'' so I want to keep the same weight but want to turn it into muscle. Any work out/food eating tips?

Blackout...first and foremost a healthy and solid diet consisting of whole grain carbs, good fats, and lean meat proteins is essential. If your goal is to gain muscle but lose fat, I say roughly 30 minutes of straight cardio no more than 4 times a week combined with resistant exercises: 3-4 exercises per body part, 3-4 sets, 10-15 reps/set. After you get the diet and workout regime down solid, maybe add a Whey protein powder and/or fat burner.

www.prosource.net is a GREAT site for this stuff...

What do you eat for breakfast? And what are your weight-changing goals? Also, eating every 2-3 hours helps out a ton with hunger and keeps your metabolism going all day

If you are looking to not lose weight but shapen and tone I would agree with the cardio/weights. I rotate my sched with 3 weights and 4 cardio then the following week flip it. I also dont really watch what I eat so to speak but I try and stick to organic foods as much as possible and not eat fast food at all. It has been almost a month since I have touched any fast food and my wallet and I are VERY happy about that. Once you can stick to it for a good month or so then I agree add a fat burner and some whey in the mix. I take a green tea pill 2x a day and whey protein in the AM for fuel then right after I work out. I also snack on fruits and rice cakes when the munchies hit me. It seems to be working too. I have not felt this good about myself in years and I am really starting to see results which is of course pushing me harder!!
Any of you guys have any experience with creatine or NO Xplode or any supplements of that kind?
I took creatine last year when my goals were to simply gain weight... and you will gain weight off of it pretty quickly (seems like it was mainly water weight although I did look bigger)... I didnt like it though and lost that weight soon after I stopped using it and started focusing on running, no need to use it now as I want to keep my weight pretty stable at the moment

20:14 this saturday in a 5k race... amazingly only good enough for 3rd in my age group which was suprisingly competitive, but still got a little trophy for the collection. I pretty much fell apart on the final mile on a hilly course, I keep from dropping off so dramatically, I will be running sub 20's with ease... got to work in more spped training
Any of you guys have any experience with creatine or NO Xplode or any supplements of that kind?
What are you looking to take those supplements for? A lot of people react differently to the different types of Creatine. It can be quite tricky and people have mixed results as its sort of a try and see thing. Essentially the purpose is that it allows your muscle tears to heal faster, increasing recovery time, by saturating your muscles with water. You have to maintain the intake of creatine and also drink plenty of water as dehydration/headaches is a common side effect. The most "friendly" type of creatine I would recommend now is plain Creatine Ester Ethel powder. It will often be labeled as CEE.

NOXplode uses a creatine blend mixed with Nitric Oxide. The appeal of Nitric Oxide is that it increases blood flow, improving circulation, thus giving you an energy boost or PUMP as the cool kids like to call it. You can get NO as a separate powder, those name brand blends tend to mix it with creatine as a pre-workout drink. These blends also tend to have ginko bilibo mixed in, to help on your focus and prevent a jittery/dizzy effect.

Personally I've taken creatine on two separate occasions. I've taken plain Creatine Monohydrate years ago when I first got into lifting, it gave me occasional headaches because I wasn't very responsible as far as nutrition. I noticed some size but to be honest it was probably more thanks to putting in time at the gym.

This past Summer I tried out Xyience NOX-CG3, its pre-workout drink of NO/Creatine blend similar to NOXplode. It gave me some of the best pumps I've ever had at the gym. Less resting periods and overall better endurance. I eventually stopped drinking it daily and switched to just taking it when I really needed a boost. I didn't want to grow dependent on it because its expensive stuff. It gave me quite a rush though. A big and almost instant notice is the increase in vascularity, basically made my veins pop out like crazy.

To sum it up, I wouldn't recommend any blends if you're new to supplement scene. Try the cheaper plain no-name separate powders and see what they each do for you. Most importantly, take the time to read and research before you put any kind of supplements into your body. They're literally supplementary to good diet and excersize. There is no fast track to anything. And knowing is half the battle!

Thanks guys.

I'm more or less looking for something that would help build mass somewhat. I don't really want a weight gainer but something that will help my muscles develop quicker. And yeah, I know there's no quick fix to gaining muscle I just want to make sure that I'm getting the most out of the time I'm putting in the gym. And I know sometimes supplements help, so if you guys have any recommendations I'm game.

I've been working out steadily for over a year now, and was doing most of it to lose weight. I've hit a pretty good weight now so I was wanting to start building muscle. I didn't focus too much on muscle at first b/c I didn't want to look all swollen like guys who only lift and don't do cardio.

your best bet is to stack up on protein, consume 1 gram for every pound of body weight over the course of the day. Eat protein bars for snacks, drink protein shakes after your workout, mix in more protein rich roods like chicken and steak in your diet.

if your looking to bulk up you need to increase your calories (sort of the opposite of losing weight, but to build muscle you need to break the muscles so they repair)

You should be hungriest in the morning, somewhat, at least from what I have read. So that's a good thing. You haven't eaten in 6-8 hours (maybe less or more). Eat more for breakfast, load up on HEALTHY stuff. Find a good calorie intake chart and use it. Bring a snack to work/school/whatever you do to eat two hours after breakfast.

Breakfast is my biggest meal of the day, usually. I eat around 5 AM, let it digest and all of that, and run for 3 miles every day now around 6:15. I'm looking for good running shoes since I'm really getting bored of a treadmill and want to run outside.

In 8 weeks I lost 4.0% body fat and gained muscle definition. Supplements were NO-Xplode, Whey protein and Hydroxycut Hardcore. I went to the gym 4 days a week for about 1-1.25 hours each night, with about 10 minutes warm-up cardio before hand. My diet was incredibly clean and my only cheat meals were to Subway and healthy alternative foods.

Taking supplements is a good idea, depending on what your goals are. But nothing will matter if you eat like crap...

Well I just made it my goal to loose weight. I just weighed myself yesterday and I was 207 pounds and 24% fat. I want to get down to at 175 pounds.

I have been lifting weights for the past few weeks, I am now trying to get 30 minutes of Cardio in every morning before I eat breakfast because they say you burn alot more fat if do that. Well I guess we will see in a while how I am doing.

I'm down to 173 and have been at this weight for the past 2 weeks while eating "almost" whatever I wanted. I'd mix in about 5 cheat meals per week (out of 21) and was still maintaining the same weight so I am pretty much done with the losing weight part and will now concentrate on getting toned.

I also surpassed my original goal of 180 from a few months ago:

Couldn't believe I was 202 back in July of 2007.

could you tell a difference with the NO-Xplode? I already take hydroxycut and whey in the morning, whey before workout, and whey after workout. I'm considering getting some.

On a side note, a guy was telling me today that he got some testosterone to take (iunno) and it came with nipple cream to put on his nipples in case he started secreting from them. (I'm not sure the validity of this, I just found it funny when he told me)

LOVED No-Xplode. Within minutes of taking it, you get this energy rush and can feel your blood flowing. Referred to as "pumps" you will notice your muscles absorbing the nutrients depending on what body part you work on. Fatigue was never a factor and my mental focus was intense. I have tried other pre work-out products, but nothing has worked as well as NO-Xplode...

people are talking in here about supplements to help boost energy before a workout, but I'm wondering if there are any supplements that will help in losing weight (fat)

I'm doing weight lifting and at least 30 minutes of cardio 3-4 times a week at the gym. But I still don't see the weight dropping (I've been at this since mid december, but hit it hard after the 1st of the year)

I consume about 1500-1700 calories during a given work week (mon-fri) and probably closer to 2000 on weekends. (I'll have 1 crazy day a week usually where I'll go "nuts" and maybe get into the 2500-3000 calorie range)

Googling for weight loss supplement just bring up a bunch of crap that i've seen on infomercials that I know doesn't work. I'm not looking for the lose "30 lbs in 30 days" crap that I know is a joke. Just something to help boost my metobalism a bit. I've also replaced my 1-2 cups of coffee a day with green tea (with 1 equal and a little non-dairy creamer) to try and boost it.

is there something out there that will help? I'm 5'9 230lbs, trying to get to 200 by the end of the year, my shorter term goal is to drop 10 lbs by my birthday in may.

thanks!

Lost 15 pounds in January, just from cutting back on sodas. No change in my daily routine other than that.

What that tells me, is that i drink waaaay to much soda.

haha, middle of last year I was about 255, and I changed my diet to include eating SOMETHING for breakfast every day, eating soup for lunch, and trying to just eat some meat for dinner (no potatoes or anything)

this helped me lost about 20 lbs far, but then I stopped losing weight, so I joined a gym and got into an exercise program, still haven't really lost much though.

trying to get past the plateau I seem to be on.

Still stuck between 155-160 although with my running race schedule i don't anticipate gaining any weight before summer (when races slow to almost a complete stop)

In good news... finished 6th out of about 107 at my alma maters (University S Alabama) inaugural 5k run yesterday

My diet during the week, when at work is very healthy, and I try to eat something almost every hour or 2.

Hydroxycut, Lipo-6 and Tetrazene are all thermo-boosters that help with fat loss, appetite suppression and energy. Check out www.prosource.net and look around...

I'm a little late to jump in here but what the hell. I'm roughly 170 pounds with little fat but still enough to motivate me to get off my lazy ass and do something about it. I want to tone up a bit, get some nice muscle definition and cut some fat off. Unless I'm fatter than I think I am I'm not expecting to lose much weight just have a healthier body. One thing I'm particularly ashamed of is my awful cardio. A run around the block (roughly 1 mile) and I'm huffing and puffing. I'm running on and off and been pushing it off with excuses like "It's too cold I'll wait for the summer." Anywho, it is in fact quite cold and running in it seems to be harder for me. I think I read that breathing through your nose can curb any effects cold air might have (if it does indeed have an effect on me) but I can't breathe well through my nose due to a deviated septum. I find that running outside works particularly well even using a treadmill seems to produce less of effect. Anything I can do to substitute the run?

Enough about the cardio, I have an idea to run the rest of my workout regiment though. Just give me an ok on this.

- Sit-ups
- Leg Lifts
- Push-ups
- Couple sets of freeweight curls
- More Sit-ups
- More Leg Lifts
- More Push-ups

I figured Day 2 would be the same as above but instead of curls I can bench. I also want to do more lifting but I'm not sure what else I should do. Furthermore any supplements to take?

I think your calorie count may be a little low. Also what your eating is just as important, trying to minimize bad carbs and fat, maximizing protein intake. Some others members may have more indepth advice. I know enough to train myself, but am uncomfortable giving specific advice.

So far this year I have lost about 13 lbs. Started at 217 and am down to 204. I am only 5' 9" and hold a lot of fat in my chin area. I want to get down to 180.

Anyone take Amino Acids in here? I've never took any before, but I was looking at some called "Purple Wraath." Any results/opinions?

well, the protein I take has a bunch of amino acids in it.

if your interested in that, Mega Men (by GNC) has some amino acids in i (plus a lot of other good stuff, take 2 pills a day and your good to go)
Anyone take Amino Acids in here? I've never took any before, but I was looking at some called "Purple Wraath." Any results/opinions?
Great supplement to take, especially if you are trying to gain some muscle mass. I wish I had extra money to buy some right now. Anyways, I dont know what that purple wraith crap is, just get regular BCAAs (branched chained amino acids). You can never go wrong with Optimum nutrition brand.

If you are interested in BCAAs, I would also check out some other special "vitamin/mineral blends" that I really like and are pretty cheap. ZMA (zinc, magnesium, and vitamin B6) is a supplement you take every night. You can read up on all the benefits yourself, and if you decide to use them, look it up or or tell me and ill help you with the proper supplementation. HMB is a metabolite of leucine, one of the amino acids. Take it with your post workout supplement routine and I noticed a big difference with this one.

Anyone tried the Body Fortress NOS Pump pills from walmart? $9.99 for 90 pills. Havent really heard anything negative about them.

Down like 14lbs now. Hooray!

But, LOL, we were losing our minds so we picked up Wendy's on the way home. The only other time we had fast food was Taco Bell and that was 3 weeks ago.
I'm liking that even though the taste of fast food is still good, I look at it and kinda felt "eww". I guess when you do compare to what we have been eating.. then it's understandable to be grossed out.

But at the same time.. MMMM Wendys! The good news is that it really hit the spot and I'm probably good for another 3 weeks. Fast Food once every 3 weeks is perfectly OK in my book!
