JJ Hardy is single handedly keeping my fantasy team afloat this week.

18/30 (.600) with 6 HR, 12 RBI, 8 R, and a stolen base.
 
As a Phillies fan, I'm disappointed that Hamels didn't make the all star team...

All Star voting is kind of messed up for pretty much every sport.
 
All-Star voting is basically a popularity contest. People will vote based on name so the most deserving don't make it half the time. Soriano got voted in and he's been on the DL for half of the games. Of the time he has played he was awful for half of it. His numbers look good based on about a 3 week scorching hot streak.
 
We need Rich Harden. But Billy Beane is going to try and fuck us over but we need him, I don't feel comfortable with our #2-5 for a playoff run, with Harden in the 2 slot we become a lot more dangerous.

I agree. Z and Dempster are solid but 3 thru 5 are way to inconsistent. Lilly and Marquis are good if they're on but if they're not they're going to get torched.

Matt Laparote is Major League Ready. That kid is killing it in AA. Its unfortunate the brew crew have no room for him. Cleveland is getting back a beefy prospect. i think this move is to ensure if sheets get hurt again. which he will..they wont have any holes if he is injured.
 
If you want Harden you're going to have to give up your whole farm system. Dude's the best pitcher in the game..

Brewers might as well strike now....only competition is the Cubs.

Red Sox should welcome the All Star break with open arms. Not only will it give them a chance to rest their guys, but it may also cool off the Rays. If only Posada had missed the 3B bag yesterday, could've taken 3 of 4 from the Yanks at the Stadium. Now they've go to play the red hot Twins. Fenway park is sorely missed.

He's 2-1 in AAA since he got called up on June 23rd with a 3.93 ERA.

it is an interesting move by the brew crew...I don't really know much about there farm system but to give such a top OF prospect away for a guy that could walk at then end of the season is/was a risk. If they have a deep system, then it makes some sense. Go for it now, and get the 2 draft picks when/if sabathia walks. You will get younger prospects to replace your top/mid level ones you traded sabathia for. If you don't have a deep farm system then they better win now, they better pay up at the end of the season, and they better show him the time of his life in mil.

Exactly. Not sure what show it was this morning (on ESPN), but they were talking about the prospect haul the Brewers would get if they were unable to resign Sheets and Sabathia. I think the number was something like 5 compensation picks combined. Thats just nuts, but from what I was hearing they will only be able to sign one anyways.

And knowing what Sabathia didn't sign in Cleveland, they've got to believe the Brew won't have his kind of money, unless they make it deep in the post season and he likes the atmosphere.

As for the Red Sox, I think I am finally done with Manny. Last night was unforgiveable. Atleast swing at one of those 3 pitches. Him and Lugo need to go. Atleast with Varitek, sucking it up too, he brings something to the field when he's out there. Those 2, not so much.
 
What is a trade that could actually happen between the Reds and Rays that would net the Rays Ken Griffey Jr.? Would they want prospects, MLB established players? I'm interested because I want to start a new Rays franchise in MLB 08: The Show. I can do trades before the franchise starts so even if it is lesser prospects I can trade then start the franchise. I started a franchise and traded for Matt Holliday to play right field. It is awesome but I don't get a very realistic feeling because I don't think the Rockies are letting go of him. Meanwhile the Reds could very easily replace the aging Griffey.

LaPorta should be quite good but he was fairly expendable since, he's right handed, plays a corner OF spot or 1B, & is a Boras client.

If Sheets & CC walk after the season they could have 5 picks in the top 40. They have one of, if not the best, draft guys making their picks too.

actually varitek was voted on by the players...had nothing to do with the titto...i agree he can't hit for shit anymore, but he is an excellent play calling catcher. IMO, and those of his teamates/peer one of the best in the game. He is very prepared for every game.


IMO, manny shouldn't be starting, varitek shouldn't be on the team. Youk is a ?, but considering the pathetic hitting by 1b in the AL this year, I guess he deserves to be on the team. JD drew has put up solid enough #'s to be on the team. Mike lowell IMO should be on the team as well. As well as dice k. While dice k's walks are thru the roof, his whip is decent, his era is solid, his k's/9 are good, and his w/l record are all worthy of being on the team. Opp BA against his is really low, espically for a starter. Going into last nights game, somewhere in the vincinity of .220 ba against dice k.

Ken Griffey Jr. would be a fourth outfielder at best on the Rays.
 
I trade Jonny Gomes straight up for Griffey. Gomes is 10 years younger but a worse fielder and hitter. And I have Hinske, Floyd, and some crazy prospects (some of the prospects are even better then Gomes and Griffey as I downloaded rosters from operationsports.com and they a file with full minor league sets). 1. Crawford 2. Upton 3. Griffey 4. Pena 5. Longoria 6. Iwamura 7. Floyd 8. Navaro 9. Bartlett

I am aware Iwamua leads off in real life but it works out better in the game because Upton is amazing and not having him in the top 4 would be a crime.

Yeah Varitek can't hit for shit, but catch? The guy is a pretty damn good catcher, and to prove that he was catching Masterson passed balls all over the place in game three. If it was another catcher it would have been wild pitch city. Varitek is a GREAT catcher. He is a POOR hitter.
 
From what I heard, in regard to Varitek's selection, is the main reason he got in over A.J. is becasue many of the players think that A.J. is a douche bag and would rather have Varitek there based on his career and his play calling ability. That being said, that sounds fair to me. I agree more with that than 2/3 of the starting OF for both sides.

Drew and someone like Quentin or Dye should be starting in the AL OF (Manny and Ichiro, seriously people come on)

Holliday deserves to be starting for the NL atleast over Soriano.

With all of that said, the Red Sox and Cubs should have only gotten 5 or 6 people in the All Star game. Lowell should be there,

Oooooh, 3.93! That's almost better than average! How about, instead of looking at 3 games, we look at his entire 2008 season, between AA and AAA: 4.67 ERA with 6 more strikeouts than walks. Man, those numbers just SCREAM blue chip prospect!

How many converted football players in one and a half years are posting winning records in AAA? Everything can't be analyzed by statistics like that.

HELL YEAH! The Cubs pulled it off! Overall we didn't give up too much either. Murton and Patterson have been decent players. I think Gallagher has pretty good stuff and could develop into something special down the road. I don't know much about the minor league catcher we gave up.
 
Now its the Cards turn to do something insane. Which they probably will, just sit back and wait. Mulder, Wainwright, and possibly Carpenter (scary I know) could all be back by the middle of next month. Still think its going to be a fun race to the finish in the NL Central.

He played 3 years of college baseball and was given a 10 million dollar signing bonus.

It's not like they signed him based off of some grainy high school footage
 
according to the boston beat writter that was talking about the trade on the pre game show, the catcher was the best player in the deal...murton is a solid player that is still young and coming into his own...the cubs didn't have to give up much that it hurt them, but it isn't like the a's got screwed in the deal. Catching prospects are hard to come by, and murton is a decent mlb ready player that is young and didn't have a spot in the cubs OF.

as for ichiro, I dunno....304 ba, and 34 sb...not bad for a starting cf...yes the rest of his offensive #'s are down, but he has never hit for power and it isn't like there is anyone onbase for him to hit in, and no one on the mariners are batting him in. I do like sizemore a lot as a player and IMO he should be starting, but it isn't like you are losing anything with ichiro starting.

is mulder really much to be looking forward to coming back? he has never really been what he was since going the NL. Had 1 solid season since joining the cards (his first year there)...now carpenter on the other hand..:bouncy:

Thats who I was somehow forgetting, Sizemore. You lose power with Sizemore out and Ichiro in there. But thats not as bad as Manny, having a bad year by his standards, being the starter. The NL is just a mess. Nothing against Fukodome, but yeah.

Yeah, I know Mulder isn't really anything, but the other 2, thats scary to think that the Cards are doing what they are without their stud SPs. If they both come back in form, its going to be a 3 horse race for the Central. Unless of course the Reds talent actually shows up. That team is too good to be this shitty. Well too talented atleast.

anyone on these boards that get to see the rays play on a regular basis? I was wondering what was up with kazmir. He only lasted 5ip tonight vs the yanks and he lasted only 5 ip vs the sox in his previous start. Watching the sox vs rays game, his fastball was down a lot for him...He was touching the low 90's, in the past I remembered his fastball to be more in the mid to high 90's. I was wondering if there was something wrong with him. He hasn't lasted thru 6 ip in the past 4 starts. Coming off the DL to begin the season, he lost but then threw out 6 solid outings getting the win. Pitching at least 6ip in the 6 straight wins, and giving up only a few hits. His past 4 starts, he only made it past 6ip 1x, and his hits allowed are dramatically up, his ip are down, and his walks are about the same per outing.
 
I remember when he was coming up through the Mets system, scouts said that his stamina was an issue. Dont know if its still an issue now.

it was petersen who said that.

He hasnt lasted long in any game he has pitched. 5 innings is his normal average because he throws a shitload in the first 3 innings and he reaches a 100 pitches by the 5th inning. but not to say he doesnt have killer stuff. His ERA and Wins make sure that he is a good pitcher.

Edit: im not sure if my numbers are right but i heard it on the Fan today..so i may be totally wrong.
How bout the mets. make it 4-1 in the last 5 and we took out Teh Franchise today. And where the hell did Fernando Tatis start getting power again. Geez, he hasnt been that bad of a sub..and now with Church on the DL and possibly shut down...ill take all the hitting we can get.

I think it's obvious that the wild card winner is coming out of the NL central. Cubs just have to take second in the division (although it'd be better to win).
 
I just got back from the Tigers game. They showed up for the last 3 innings and over came a 6-0(or was it 5-0 before they scored) deficit and beat the Indians. It was an awesome game. I finally got to see Zumaya pitch. The only ball he threw under 96 was a 79 MPH change up. I think he threw 20 pitches and all were 97 and above. The ones in the dirt were still reading 97-99 MPH. I had an awesome time and awesome seats. Almost caught a ball. I have pictures from the game if anyone wants to see them. I will upload them later.

it is true for his last 5 or 6 starts this year...but like i said earlier he was going 7ip avg the first 6 out of 7 starts.


last year he had over 206 ip, with 34 starts, or a tad above 6ip per outing...the year before it was 144 ip in 24 starts with a 6ip again...he is only 24. The other interesting numbers is that in his losing streak here, that opp ba the first time thru the lineup is around .118 or so...but they are crushing him the 2nd time around...I heard it on weei, I don't remeber the #'s they gave

That was one of the few games I've had the opportunity to watch recently. I'm so sorry I did. After the initial deficit it looked like the Tigers had given up on that game. I thought, "I guess the only way the Indians can win right now is when the other team gives up." And then the bullpen goes and does what it's been doing all year. Absolutely wretched.
