I started Gantz last night. I knew nothing about it at all except I liked the Rip Slyme song.

Holy shiznit. WTF is going on in this show?!?!?!!
CRAZYTOWN LIVES.
At first I wasn't too sure of the opening of Gantz, but after a couple of episodes it grew on me. I really like the ending theme too.

Overall I really liked the show, but there were several parts where I was pulling my hair out from some of the character's decisions. I mean on one hand they offer some realistic views of human thought, but then the characters make unimaginably bad decisions or they take forever to decide on something.

I hated the show with passion for the reasons listed. "Oh, this monster just decapitated and killed someone 15 feet away from me. Oh should I shoot this monster? Oh I don't know... you do it! no you do it!" :bomb:

fuck the Gantz anime (okay I enjoyed parts of it), the manga is fucking awesome though! You can get the first 4 volumes now with the 5th coming in June. It gets even better after about book 7 or 8 (picking up where the anime left off) and you actually get to see Kurono get some proper character development during the next few books that follow afterwards.

the only anime ive seen thats actually on par if not better than the manga source is Initial D. dunno if its still an ongoing manga or not but the anime was awesome.

well it's pretty hard to read manga with your wife, so anime it is for now and always.

i've got a bunch of manga graphic novels i've got to dump before i move out of here.

Ranma 1-18
Vampire Princess Miyu 1-5 + Origins
Vampire Yui A New Awakening
X1999 (all of it)
Two Dual Language GTO
Several Dual- Language Kindaichi Case Files 1,2,3,+4...American releases 5,6,7,8,12
Ogre Slayer 1+2
Confidential Confessions 2+4?
Rumic World Trilogy
Eatman 1+2

I think I tried auctioning off some of this in the past, but it's annoying to keep relisting stuff.

I just finished watching NieA under 7. I loved it; haha, whenever NieA was on the screen she stole the show. Her carefree, freeloader attitude was a great foil for Mayuko and some of the other characters. The show really has a lot of hilarious moments.

NieA under 7 should probably be a depressing anime since it is about a poor girl living in a poverty stricken town, struggling through life. However it wasn't depressing because all the characters in the show persevered no matter the circumstances. Then in the end Mayuko realizes how important just being able to live is; they shouldn't be worrying about whether the bathhouse is going to be sold—instead they need to just keep moving through life taking the good with the bad. There are a lot of other themes, but that one was the most prominent to me.

I watched Lain a couple weeks ago and I loved that too. Although Lain is entirely different than NieA under 7 they still share some similarities.

You should watch Haibane Renmei Too, then Razz its from the same person and along the same lines as Niea not as depressing as Lain but not as "happy" as Niea under 7 is (and yes I consider niea a pretty happy anime. For the creator of those shows, that show is a freaking 100mg antidepressant, or something like that), but yeah if you haven't seen Haibane Renmei its great.

Has anyone else had a chance to watch Kara no Kyoukai 5? It was incredibly good. The plot, animation, everything was just a delight to see.

Other than that, I really can't find anything to watch. Ippo is ok, I kind of spoiled it by reading the manga. Plus the animation is deteriorating. Tried to watch Valkyria, but it's not really my thing. I need something to fill the hole that Gundam 00 used to take up every week.

I have Haibane Renmei on the way; it should be getting here soon. I have heard that it is the best one out of all his work.

Yeah, I agree NieA under 7 has a lot of happy/funny moments that keep the mood upbeat. I mean some of the stuff was so absurd that it was hilarious. For example:
the episode where Genzo and Chiaki infiltrate Chada's bathhouse was insane. The idea that everyone was ignorant of the plant being marijuana was hilarious.

Haibane Renmei, much like Niea Under 7, is authored by people who thinks it is super-sweet to never fully reveal things to their audience and end without any meaningful resolution.

Renmei is definitely the far better show and I enjoyed it to a degree, but still this pisses me off when any show does it.

If I'm watching the end credits of your show and I'm not sure why I even was shown what I was shown then YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG.

Started watching the new Full Metal Alchemist series on Hulu. I still haven't seen all of the entire original series so this might work out better for me. I won't be going in with to many expectations. The animation has certainly been upgraded to a much better quality.

I tried to watch Love Hina, but it's just awful. The dub gives me a headache, and it's just pointless and not funny. Thinking of trying to trade it (and Cowboy Bebop, episodic thing wasn't for me) for some new anime. In the meantime, i may replace LH with Desert Punk, which i heard was really good.

I've also been watching Black Lagoon, about to finish Season 1, and wow is it good. The action scenes are intense, and even the emotional ones are just amazing.

I'm also finishing up Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, it started off a little weird, and i'm still not 100% sure what's going on, and if i like it or not. Hopefully it'll all make sense once i finish it.

I don't understand why people continue to watch the dub of Love Hina when so many people tell them not to watch the dub.

Glad to see Azumanga is required watching... I bought a giant anime lot with a bunch of series and a giant 4.5 foot Sonic plushie off of Craigslist for 250 bucks... (Very good purchase considering my "fuckable" Sonic doll I got, not that I'll be doing that or anything)

Nobody told ME. Is it worth watching it all? (Seems like a no)

You scare me.

Well, to be fair the anime subbed is still a mixed bag (because the plot super condensed in the anime isn't nearly as good as the manga), but the let me put it this way, the dub is terrible, the sub is a thousand times better than the dub, and the manga is about that much better than the sub. But if you don't like Harem animes/mangas, avoid the show, but again the sub is a whole lot better than the dub, I apologize for assuming you had read that already. I'd suggest watching about 4 episodes of it subbed, if you still don't like it then there's probably no hope. I really enjoyed the show when I first saw it subbed at my local anime club (back in like 2002) i liked it so much I went home and downloaded it all on a 56 k modem (and this was eyars before it was licensed, BTW). When the dvds came out I watched the dub, and I thought I was going to have to kill Bandai for making such a bad dub. Though its technically not their fault (outside of the fact that they didn't say HELL NO to the dub) because they didn't make that dub, it was California Digital Publishing. They don't seem to have made any other dubs since then. Good thing, the dub is probably one of the worst dubs ever made that where the actual show wasn't edited. I believe the best example was in the fansubs the line was when naru was coming over to Keitaro in the first episode in the hot springs " What is this hard thing it keeps getting bigger" where in the dub it was "Why don't you come on over here" [/rant]

watch the sub version. some of the episodes are kinda off but i liked the majority of love hina. it one of those anime where it is what it is. i check out dub versions of anime ive already seen on cartoon network or sci fi channel and the american voices always sound so damn awful . especially in bleach. though having started in anime with dbz i prefer the american voices over the japanese one especially since goku sounds like chick.

Nice list. If I didn't already all of the Ranma manga I'd jump on those.

I'm thinking about getting the Here is Greenwood manga. I loved the anime.

I'm glad Guile respects my old-school collection.

I had many, many more but I sold off/threw away a lot. It kinda hurt, but it was necessary.

I also loved the Here is Greenwood anime. I remember when it first came out ages ago. Last year I ran into a dub showing at a con and sat down. I found it really, really, hard to enjoy nowadays. I loved Fushigi Yuugi when it first came out. Now I'm not sure how I'll feel if I watch it. I own the stupidly expensive box sets of it, but I'm hesitant to crack them open and watch it with the wife again.

I stopped reading/collecting Ranma when I realized it would never ever go anywhere. I checked out the synopsis of the last couple manga on Wikipedia just to see how it ended. Rumiko Takahashi is terrible about that sort of thing.

I have to catch up on Bleach, Shippuden, Reborn, and One Piece after I finish Gantz. That's something in the neighborhood of a 100+ eps for my wife and I to marathon for a few weeks. Then I'll need the NEXT BIG THING.

Any ideas?

If you can find it, watch Haunted Junction. Its kinda (check that REALLY) hard to find, but you can get it off netflix, and the show is ridiculous and funny. Don't expect like anything super-deep, but you'll still most likely enjoy it. Oh, and take a chance on Fushigi Yugi. I saw it when pioneer first released it in 1999, and watched it after buying the dvds, and then watched it again when I started dating my now wife, and we both loved the show. Oh, and if you haven't seen any Gainax stuff other than Eva, watch them (examples are: FLCL, His and Her Circumstances, Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, This ugly yet beautiful world, Gurren Lagaan) Wow, I just realized only 2 of those shows haven't been on a regular cable/satellite channel. Yes, TUYBW is a pretty standard shounen anime, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Finally, just for the hell of it, I also suggest Ghost Stories, Chobits, and Full Metal Panic (if you haven't already seen them)

Well maybe I'll get back to FY again at some point. I really loved that show for many years and often mentioned it as my fav.

I totally loved Haunted Junction and lol'd hard at molester female ghosts and Christian's screaming OHMYGODDUUUUU.

Didn't like Eva, thought FLCL was aight, hated His/Her, haven't seen MSAA or TUYBW, got bored by Gurren.

Haven't seen Ghost Stories, loved Chobits, and liked Full Metal Panic but that was years ago.

I'd make a list of things I've seen but it would go on and on as I've been watching anime since about 1993 or so. Thanks for the suggestions.

Things I'm considering...

Genshiken
Hajime No Ippo
Law of Ueki
Blood+
Trinity Blood

I know nothing about any of these except Ippo. I dearly wish there was an MMA equivalent to Ippo but I'll just have to keep dreaming.

Anyway what do people think of these shows? The list used to be much longer with Black Lagoon, Gantz, Haibane Renmei, Gankutsuou, and others but I already watched them all!

Kind of off topic, but I have been playing the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm PS3 game. Let me just say it's incredibly good. The cell shaded theme really contributes to the anime/cartoon look, making cinematics beautiful. Also the music is damned good. I thought since I watched the series until Shippuden, I would be rapidly tapping x through the cinematics, but I ended up watching through them. It has some faults, like it tends to be a button masher, can get repetitive (much artificial lengthening), and no online play. However, it's an excellent game to play with a friend.

Has anyone read the D.Gray man manga? It looks fairly interesting. Is it basically a Shonen type of series?

Genshiken - Decent.
Hajime No Ippo - Decent.
Law of Ueki - Meh.
Blood+ - Decent.
Trinity Blood - NO!!

Not exactly the strongest of lists...

Yeah, I bought Haunted Junction from CAG member dtcarson. Haunted Junction is wacky, however it should be metioned that Haunted Junction is SUBTITLE only. It may not matter to some, but I just wanted to point that out. I enjoyed it and I am a dub-fan.

Fighting Spirit is FANTASTIC, and that is coming from someone who couldn't care less about boxing in real life. :boxing:

It is by far the best title in that list IMO.

I kinda don't have a fucking clue what direction the Naruto manga is trying to go. Can we finish this cheesy Pain arc off, please?

they should have scrapped the story mode alltogether and focused on making a deeper fighter with more characters and moves. its easily the best naruto game to date but the missions are all crap.

Hells yeah. We're like the only people on this forum who like it. :(

Edit: fucking lokizz. Always beating me by one minute! Yeah, I agree with ya, lok. Missions/story sucked. Wish my friend wanted to play it with me more. :(

im willing to bet pain will either kill himself or die
since that move of his supposedly brings him closer to death whenever he uses it.

oh yeah that game needed online play too. i dont care about rankings and all that it would have ben fun to play it against people from all over. cant wait till it drops to 20 so i can pick it up again.

A lot of Ippo fans and a lot of Trinity Blood hate. I'll update the list with that in mind. Also if anyone wants to grab any manga let me know.

My wife just let me know that a friend of mine has some of the volumes I'm missing out of that listing.

Genshiken is a great show if you are part of any nerd hobby, and especially the anime sub-culture. Very funny series and a great slice of life show/ Everyone I've shown it to has liked it, regardless of how big any anime fan they were, you can identify with the nerdiness of the characters.

UK, May 14, 2009 - The hugely popular Japanese anime Bubblegum Crisis is set to get a celluloid makeover, with six countries partnering to craft a truly international feature.

Production houses from Singapore, Japan, Australia, Canada, China and the UK will work together on the $30m movie, with a 2012 release planned.

For a bit of background, the Bubblegum Crisis anime began as an eight-part series for the straight-to-video market in 1987 and its golbal popularity inspired cartoons, games, toys and other spin-offs.

bubblegum-crisis-20090514090219450.jpg

The story revolves around the Knight Sabers, a team of four young female mercenaries who take on the might of the "Boomers" -- machines built to serve mankind, but which have become deadly instruments of oppression.

Principle photography will be carried out in Australia, and preceded by a reality TV series to find young talent to star in the movie, with the plan to cast the newcomers alongside established A-list names. Producers are also currently looking for a director.

"We're thrilled to be representing this visionary project and we're confident of its global appeal," said Gary Hamilton of Arclight Pictures, one of the companies working on the feature. "It's a truly international production, not just because it's a co-production between six countries, but because the material itself transcends cultural barriers."

Didn't see that coming...
Wait, so the new FMA is a remake of the first? What exactly is it?

I just bought the entire series... FML.
It's just a revisioning of the FMA storyline that will supposedly follow closer to the manga.

Ah, okay. So I didn't just buy an inferior version of the series. That makes me feel better.

I did cancel my order on the second half of the series and the movie though (for now, anyway).

I'm sure you wouldnt be saying that if you've seen the 2nd half of the series.

Probably right. Ah well, at least this way I can pace myself, haha. I have a bad habit of marathoning through good series so that they only last a few days.

The second half of the first anime isn't bad by any means, but it's certainly different from the manga. Parts from the last few episodes, along with the movie, took an unnecessary and convoluted turn that I didn't approve of, but the rest of it is still very good.
