Yeah, from what I've read, other people say the manga is "so much better." Oh well...

As long as the anime is not actually bad, I'm okay with that. Since I can just watch the new series online, I'll do that instead of actually buying it.

EDIT: Okay, I went ahead and ordered the second half of the series and the movie again. I didn't realize that it was only going to be on sale at Amazon until 5/18. Better order now than be sorry later...

I've been reading Oldboy over yesterday and today, online mind you because each volume is pretty expensive I want to make sure I like it before buying. Just coming towards the end of volume 2 and I think I might start buying it soon.
 
so i finished the gantz anime then checked the synopsis of the manga.

man the manga gets downright stupid after the arc where the anime ends.
 
I started watching Suzuka yesterday.

From what I've read, people seem to have a lot of complaints about the show. I don't get why though. I think it's awesome so far. Maybe it's not top-quality animation or anything, but I like the story and the characters a lot (I'm 6 eps right now). I'll probably end up buying the Viridian collection when it's released later this summer. Also, the only reason I found out about this show was because of ANN streaming it free, so props to them.

I started out with the dub, but switched to the sub. The dub isn't too bad, but I still like the Japanese version better (as seems to almost always be the case). They just change too much of the wording in the dub to make it sound more natural, which ends up changing the meaning a little. It just bugs me.

Also, does anyone know where I could *ahem* acquire Monster (the anime)? I searched but couldn't find anything good. It's got such good reviews that I feel like I need to check it out.

Just finished Death Note... and I have to say the end of the show was rather..... anti-climactic? Especially considering how great the first 5 discs or so was.

I also must say, why even include the eye deal in the series if the consequences ended up being meaningless... Light's dad wouldn't have died earlier? or especially Misa considering she did it TWICE and it could have made the story near the end better if it complicated Light's plans... it was cool, but not great all-in-all

um no? The manga got a lot better from that point on.

Remember two different shinigami gave their lives to Misa which added their lifespans to her's. She might have lived hundreds of years if she hadn't killed herself. Otherwise I have to agree. I wish it had played more of a role in the plot. The series pretty much went downhill after L anyways.

I agree with you on the second part. Actually, that seems to be the biggest complaint(?) I hear when it comes to the series.

I watched the first episode when it first came out in Japan (mainly because the art looked so awesome), but I was impatient and didn't give it a chance. I was a Narutard back then, though, haha.
Between the two, which would you say is better?

You seem to really like Jubei-chan, KL, haha. I guess I'll have to check that out, along with the others you mentioned. Thanks for trimming it down for me though, heh. I think Cowboy Bebop is next in my queue. Then Azumanga Daioh... For some reason, I really like Suzuka so far (6 eps in), so I'll watch that anyway :p. Also, why no Code Geass and Gurren Lagann? All I hear are raves about those shows. Just curious.

Also, in regards to Beck: Sub vs. Dub? Is the singing better in a particular version? How is the English voice acting?

Aside from Fruits basket and maybe Rumbling hearts (wouldn't know haven't watched it) none of the other shows have English dubbed songs. I like dubs and most of those have either darn good dubs or really good dubs, except Escaflowne. I'm almost completely sure I remember that dub being terrible. Anyway, on a side note, my birthday was last Wednesday, and I'm probably going to pick up the two Nanoha box sets that are on sale at rightstuf.com this week. If you don't like Nanoha, you don't have to tell me, I have a good friend who has very similar anime tastes to mine, and it comes highly recommended from him.

I consider Kanon and Air to be on equal ground; I don't really have a favorite between the two. I have a really tough time trying to distinguish between different levels of amazing. Also, Kanon has its fair share of sadness too. I recommend watching both, but it probably doesn't matter which you decide in watching first.

Geass is a guilty pleasure of mine, but the plot is completely random in any given episode - it ranges from "Totally awesome!!" to "Where the crap did this come from?!" Its high production values just aren't enough to save it from bad writing and terrible pacing, even if it is mindlessly entertaining. Because of that, I can't give it my full recommendation.

And as for Gurren Lagann, I realize I'm in the minority on this one, but I can't stand it. It features some of the most hackneyed, cliched writing in recent memory ("Don't believe in the me that believes in you! Don't believe in the you that believes in me! Believe in the you who believes in yourself!"), and every battle is solved with screaming and explosions. Literally, EVERY SINGLE BATTLE. Again, even the high production values can't hide what a pooly-written shitstain it is.

Dub. Dub 100%. Funimation did some phenomenal work on that one - probably one of the best dubs *ever*.
 
Whoa CAG has an anime thread. I dont usually come down this far but now maybe... Well Ive been on a anime marathon. Just finished both seasons of Code Geass.

Also just finished watching beck this past weekend. It was a lot better than I expected. Didn't like how they warped it up though. The pictures at the end were cool but i really would have liked to have see it all fleshed out. It would have been cool if they finished it up in a movie.

I definetly agree with you. Dub all the way. switched over to the subs about half way through and never looked back. only thing that really messed me up was when they refered to the guitar as prudence. Why prudence?

Has anyone watched East of the Eden. Its pretty cool. Don't really know how its gonna turn out. Its kinda weird that they don't know where the missiles came from but I guess that's gonna be something they explain in the coming episodes.
 
I finished Kanon a few days ago, really enjoyed it and plan to watch it again once my backlog slims down! I liked it a bit more than Air, but both were pretty good. Had to put Clannad on hold since disc 2 from the first set was defective, waiting for my replacement from RightStuf.

My co-worker let me borrow Escaflowne and I just finished that, great anime as well and I'll probably end up buying the series later. I know the movie is supposed to be a re-telling of the story, is it worth watching?

Princess Tutu is probably what I'm going to work on next, looking forward to it!

They just needed an obscure female name that would strike up the recognition that they're talking about Lucille (BB King's guitar). I guess Lucille is a registered trademark, so Funimation couldn't use it without paying royalties.
 
Code Geass may make no sense, but it is totally fucking awesome. I mean, at the levels of win that thing creates, it doesn't matter whether stuff is logical or not.

There have been very few animes that have made me so excited simply to be in the presence of a new episode. (Death Note was one of the other chosen few.)
 
Thanks a ton for the help guys, especially, Kirin Lemon. I'll add both Air and Kanon to my list then and I'll try the dub of Beck. I usually only watch a dub if I hear it is REALLY good (like FMA, Bebop, Wolf's Rain, etc); otherwise I stick with the sub.
I've also noticed that so far, I've only bought a series if the dub is really good, heh (I've purchased a few of the titles on my list already). Most of the time, I feel like the original cast capture the "spirit" of the show better, if you know what I mean. That's not always the case though, I'm finding out.

I know a few of you at least bought the full Eureka Seven series at Rightstuf. What do you guys think of it? So far, it's my favorite anime of all-time. Obviously, I haven't seen that many series to be saying that, but I really really liked it. Also, I much preferred the sub to the dub on that one, even though the dub isn't terrible. I just can't get past how they pronounce Eureka's name as "Elrica." And Johnny Young Bosch is okay, but doesn't quite "fit" as Renton to me. Maybe it's because I saw the sub first... but I think the Japanese cast was a perfect fit for the show.
 
Honestly, the main character (fenton, renton?) from Eureka annoys the sweet bajesus out of me. I simply couldn't stand him, so I couldn't make it past the 7th episode.

I love Eureka Seven. They need to release a boxset. I watched subbed only though.

Definitely watch the Beck dub.

Out of your list I'd skip Rumbling Hearts unless you like really soapy soap operas.

Err, yeah. It's not that good. I don't think it even made my top 100. The characters just suck so much. Especially Renton. I give it 7/10 (my average is something around 5.7/10), so it's better than most shows, but they really did a shitty job with the characters.

Ah, oh well. I really liked all the characters in E7, especially Renton. The kids maybe were slightly annoying, but kids in real life are annoying like that too, haha. There's so much character development, if you stick with it. I know for sure it will stay in my top 5 shows at least, no matter what else I watch. Did you guys watch the sub or the dub? Like I said, the Japanese version, I think, is much better.

At least Big O had a consistent story direction once it got going, even if it was a little surreal. Geass doesn't know what the crap it's doing, aside from looking pretty.

I've seen it all. Watched it subbed when it came out. Ah, Nanashi and Bizarro-Nanashi... Good times. I'd rather not spend too much time cutting down your favorite anime, but Japan's got a lot more to offer than that.
 
Fair enough (I watched the Nanashi subs as well; recently bought the DVDs). I guess I'm just weird then, heh. We can agree to disagree. New E7 movie should be coming out (on DVD, in Japan) next month though, BTW. Looking forward to the fansub.

To change topics, I started out watching 07 Ghost, but now I'm starting to get bored with it. I don't know if I'll keep up with it or not. The story just isn't that interesting to me...

I also started watching the dub of Moon Phase (on Hulu). It seems pretty decent. They did a great job with the dub... except for the main character who just comes across as annoying. Everyone else sounds great though. It has some hilarious moments. Such as:
The grandfather examining the cat. "It has no butt hole."
 
I'll put down my recommendation that you move Gankutsuou higher up. Keep in mind it is a heavy show with little to no comedy. It's also darker than a lot of the other titles you've got listed, to the point where it can almost be emotionally draining to watch.

Still, it's one of the better series I've seen in the last five years.

Better'n me. I didn't make it past the 3rd. I tried. I really did. I tried to be interested but I ultimately lost curiosity midway through eps. 3. Though given my past bias* against big robot series, I admit my perception might be a bit clouded.

*Code Geass/TTGL being notable exceptions
 
The best way to watch Eureka 7 is view the first episode or two to figure out the situation and the characters. Then skip everything until Charles and Ray are introduced. That's the point when it starts getting really good. Later you can go back and watch the stuff you skipped.
 
Finished up Welcome to the NHK today. I was a bit surprised by the story in the middle and towards the end. I really liked it, though. I'm glad I was able to purchase it.
 
Welcome to the NHK looks like my kind of show. I'm definitely picking it up when it comes out as a complete collection (for cheaper).

I'm about halfway through Suzuka, and I still like it a lot. I can see why people wouldn't like the characters, and the animation quality may not be the greatest, but I still like it for some reason. For those who haven't heard of it, it's a romance anime about a dude who falls in love with this (seemingly) cold-hearted track star girl (high jumper). It's streaming for free on ANN (and more on Hulu), if you want to check it out. The first episode gives off the wrong impression I think though, so don't judge it based on that (they add in fanservice to try to draw people in I guess, but most of the series isn't like that). As usual, I like the sub better than the dub though...

Judging from people's reactions to E7, I doubt most people here would like it though, haha. I'm not saying it's a GREAT series or anything. Just that I like it. Because I'm weird -_-.

(Also, the Ray and Charles "arc" is one of my favorite parts of E7.)

I finished Princess Tutu last night, loved it. Great story and music.

Any opinions on the Escaflowne movie? I've only been able to find mixed reviews on it.

A total bastardization of the great TV series, but still entertaining in its own way. Don't go into it expecting things to be the same as they were, or you'll be severely disappointed.

So what's this about a season two of Haruhi Suzumiya? Anyone have confirmation or is it just a bunch of trolls on the forums I visit.
 
Finished Suzuka. Damn, I'm pre-ordering the Viridian Collection of that (only $22). I changed my mind; I love that show. It had its frustrating moments, but was great overall. Certainly not for everyone, though.

The first couple episodes don't do it justice at all - the dark fairytale that it becomes doesn't really kick in until maybe five episodes in. The show is *not* as girly or fluffy as it appears, trust me.

Aside from the youtube video, I've seen the eps. in question (and they're mixing it up again - 1st aired eps. is actually eps. 8 in chronological order). Not a bad eps. but kind of weak in interest (like the 1st season 1st aired eps.) so hopefully (if they follow the same format as the 1st season) it'll be a sign of "if it ain't broke..."
 
I'm just about caught up on One Piece now...my god the author is so imaginative. One Piece is just someone's brain spewing out crazy creative stuff constantly.

As guilty of a pleasure as it is, I can admit to being totally hooked. I can't wait to see what happens next.
