Welcome to the Official CAG Blockbuster/Gamerush video game deal thread.

Sadly, Blockbuster has cut down it's maximum trade-in value from $33-$35 to $25 or so and dropped all other values along with it. So welcome to the new world of Blockbuster featuring Gamestop trade-in prices (but without the Edge card and frequent trade-in deals to make it more appealing). Continue on if you feel like there is any need...

ALERT: More POG games (disc-only used games sold for $9.99) sighted at stores week of Nov 9th
Many CAGs have reported finding new shipments of POG games (prepacked previously owned games) showing up on Nov 10th-12th. This is YMMV as many stores will not get them. But if they do, they are usually in clear cases, disc-only, and are priced at $9.99. Some notables include Call of Duty World at War, CoD Modern Warfare, Halo 3, Halo Wars, etc. It appears to be all 360 games this time. These are disc-only refurbs but are usually in excellent shape. Note that these all have the same barcode that rings up $9.99 - if you find the same games with regular cover art and specific bar codes for that used game, then they are not part of this POG stock and will be regular prices (generally way over $9.99 for the newer titles).

ALERT: B1G1 NOW OVER (but possibly returning in late November)
The latest Buy 1 Get 1 Free sale on games $14.99 has ended. The following list of $14.99 and under used games will be maintained for the next sale though. It seems highly likely from various reports that a B1G1 sale will be returning some time in late November. Some are even a decent buy without the B1G1 sale:

What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos, post any trade-in values you have obtained, and discuss new and used game selection and availability. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Gamerush/Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

Due to the questionable stability of the Gamerush (and Blockbuster for that matter) brand, it is also permissible to discuss ways of converting credit from Blockbuster to other stores (ie, which games may be used for trading in to other stores such as Gamecrazy or EB/GS). As of right now, we have no indication of Gamerush's imminent demise, but given Blockbuster's ongoing financial difficulties we need to be aware of the possibility.

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Gamerush store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (GR to GC to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from GR.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blockbuster Game Trading Info
- You must sign up for a trade account in addition to your regular Blockbuster account
- You must sign up for a new trade account at every store you wish to trade at, even if using the same main account
- Trade-in credit can be placed onto your store account or onto a "Value" card
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- However, credit can be transferred from the store account to a card at any time
- Value cards can be used at any location
- Clerks at one store cannot see your trading/purchasing history at another store via your account
- Gamerush stores often do not get new game stock until the Friday of the release week, thus a few days later than most retailers
- Depending on state law you may or may not get sales tax added to your trade-ins (and thus get more than normal). You will always be charged sales tax where applicable on purchases, even when using credit from a Value card.

Gamerush vs. regular Blockbusters
All Blockbuster game-related discussion belongs here. Most threads created in the Deals forum will be merged in to here. There seems to be the impression by many CAGs that if they don't have a Gamerush store near them (see here for a list of GR stores: http://www.blockbuster.com/content/v.4.286.1.0/media/gameStoreList.pdf) then this thread does not apply to them. However, regular (non-GR) Blockbuster stores often run the same promos and generally have the same trade-in values. I'm going to elaborate on the last sentence as people apparently don't understand that when I say regular BB's have the same trade-in values as Gamerush that it means regular Blockbuster stores accept game trade-ins just like Gamerush stores.

The key differences:
- Only Gamerush stores sell used video game hardware and generally have a much wider selection of new hardware. Many regular BB stores had a PS3 bundle available over Christmas 2007 and since then they have expanded their hardware sales. As of right now (Dec 2008) most Blockbuster stores are selling PS3's, Xbox 360's, Wii's, and DS's. They do not sell PSP's. However, they have also started selling other electronics including Blu-ray players, portable DVD players, and digital picture frames. As a result of not selling used hardware, however, regular Blockbuster stores will not take hardware in for trades.

- Both Gamerush and regular Blockbuster stores take preorders for new games for a $5 deposit (or you can pay any other amount beyond that). Gamerush stores will get many more games in than the regular stores but unfortunately a preorder at either place is not a guarantee you will get the game. Sometimes they do not get certain titles in even if you preorder them months in advance. And even if they do get them, it tends to be a few days later than other stores.

- While many Gamerush stores have cut back on their new game stock, most regular (non-GR) Blockbusters have started selling new games. They usually have a very limited selection of top-selling new 360, PS3, and Wii games.

- Trade-in values are controlled centrally and are uniform across all Gamerush and Blockbuster locations EXCEPT if the Blockbuster is a franchise location. You can tell from the receipt if your store is a franchise store. All Gamerush stores are corporate-owned so they will have uniform pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Featured Preorders
Most Blockbuster stores (in addition to Gamerush stores of course) are featuring several games for preorder. $5 is required for a deposit. There are a few others in addition to what is listed below:

Multiplatform
Beatles Rock Band
Madden 10

:360:

:ps3:

:wii:

:ds:

They usually get these featured games in on release day like any other game retailer (though note - as of late they have been very bad about this and have gotten many games several days late!). Note that you can preorder just about any other game as the system will allow them to preorder anything they have listed (yes, even at regular stores). I have preordered Mario Super Sluggers and Dragon Quest IV myself even though they are not "featured" as preorders. However, if it is not a featured preorder they may or may not get it in, and it may arrive as late as Friday of the release week (postscript - Mario Super Sluggers did indeed arrive on Friday when every other store had it Tues. or Weds. and Dragon Quest IV never arrived).

Of course you can cancel a preorder at any time and get your deposit back or switch it to another game, even after the game comes out. So don't worry about preordering something they might not get - you can always switch it to something else. However, since I've always used credit for purchasing things at Blockbuster I'm not sure how they would handle a cancellation of a cash deposit. They may simply issue a credit to your account so beware of that if placing a cash deposit on a preorder.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Trade-In Deals
There are no trade-in deals at this time nor have there been for a very very long time. They did however just recently cut down all their trade-in values to Gamestop-like levels (but without deals to make them more appealing as at GS).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade-In Values
Trade-in price quotes will now be maintained by CAG Friend of Sonic in the THIRD post of this thread. The second post will continue to highlight specific games used to transfer credit from Blockbuster to Gamestop and vice versa.

Trade-in prices are usually universal at both Blockbuster and Gamerush, but can be wildly different at franchise Blockbuster stores. Used game prices change on Sunday with trade-in price drops following the next day (Monday). Thus any quotes given in this thread will almost certainly be good through Sunday of the current week. If you want to be sure to get the same value another CAG has reported then do your trading by Sunday as the price may drop on Monday.

Also note that many stores will no longer accept video games without cover art. This is the official policy for DVD trade-ins but apparently many clerks will confuse the two and not allow it for games either. Just beware that it might be a hassle if you have a disc-only game to trade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush website
The old Gamerush web site is now defunct, but the following link will take you to Blockbuster online, which may or may not have some info there about games. I dunno - I haven't looked at it in years.

Thanks IO and GrilledWitOnions for the response.

Hey Stoned99, do they still have a lot of Hollywood Video/ Game Crazy in your area? There are none here in Irvine or anywhere close to 405 Freeway.

I guess I'm just gonna trade X-Blades to BBV today, and settle for $ 25 Chillis. :) There no BBV in the area that I visited has pre-pack games.

The store I go to is off the 22, go North to Harbor/Garden Grove (opposite the BBV). The manager is James, the store only has 1 asshole clerk (spiky hair dude, can't remember his name), everyone else is cool.
I renewed mine for three reasons

1) It gets you unlimited disc polishing (which I use for my ebay sales, and all my sons friends 360 games)
2) They need to get so many renewals per day, and they are cool to me, so I give to my karma account.
3) And you need it for the discount on used games (IO, I'm surprised you didn't get it for this reason alone)
1) Unlimited? They gave me a card with about 5 on it and they have been taking that from me and punching it recently when I finally went in to use it. That's nice, but hardly a reason to sign up.

2) Yeah, this was the only reason I renewed last year since the guys at my local store were so good about price matching BBV games for me I figured it was the least I could do. But most of those guys are gone now and I won't be price matching there much in the future.

3) I almost never buy used games at GC because they have a a horrible selection, so-so prices, and I can't search online like I can with Gamestop. I think I bought 2 used games there all of last year and one of those was using some deal where MVP wouldn't stack. This, IMO, is the biggest drawback of MVP vs Edge - they always exclude it from promos which is just dumb. I like to have GC credit for their occasional awesome new game sales/clearances (for which I don't need MVP) but other than that I don't go there too often.

I called a store and got a list of stores that had POGs (by giving the part number that was kindly posted by someone else in this thread) I went to three of the stores and I could not find any of the POGs. I checked all over the store, and asked the clerks-- no luck. Oddly enough, this was on Saturday and Sunday that I was checking.

You know, when my Sons friends heard I could remove the scratch ring from their 360 games I must have had 5-6 games polished in a 2 week period, and all my ebay sales have been flawless as the discs always look like new after being polished, so the disc polish definitely separates GC from GS.

I did hear on Friday that MVP will stack in the future with the deals, maybe we can confirm with Scorch. I also have such a huge amount of credit at GC due to their BBV pricematch policies that I buy most of my new games from them.

But I agree with all your points, as a corporation they fail miserably, they really feel like a mom'n pop store. The only chain worse is PlayNTrade (or BBV )

PnT is worst I think.. 2 of the stores near PnT corporate offices in irvine are closed within a year, 1 of them is within 6 months actually. Those PnT franchise are run like mom n pop store. I remember asking for a WiiFit and the PnT wants $155 for it.

The MVP membership allows you unlimited disc cleanings at the store you signed up at. The punch card allows you to have your discs cleaned at any other store.

Did certain regions of the country not get these in? Everyone on here that lives in my area (including me) checked many of the stores and none of them got these disc-only games in.

I got just one lousy thing. I was too late.

God of War 2

However, its just one disc and the game says Disc 1. Is this a 2 disc game?
First of all, Bezerker, what was your Hollywood horror story? I thought you meant you had posted about it elsewhere but I don't see it. You gotta tell us now, man!
I bought two of the same game for $60 on Thursday. On Saturday they dropped the game down to $30 so I tried to return & rebuy. The lady told me they did not have a price guarantee policy. I replied that they do have a return policy though, and whatever i returned would eventually have to be put back out for sale, so why not save the leg work. The lady went to call another store to see if they could do this. After about a minute she said "im onto your scam, im not going to do the refund. You can call corporate if you want, but im not going to do it". When i asked what scam she was referring to, she insisted that the amounts i paid on my receipt were not the actual prices I paid for the games. She also asked why I had two of the same game and I told her it was a collectors item (as it is a game that say Limited Edition right on the case). She just said "yea, right"

The back and forth went on for quite a bit til I just gave up and left. I was able to get the refund/rebuy done at another store, but it really aggravates me when people come up with the most BS ways to get out of having to do some actual work. The district manager was recently fired (no surprise there) so they dont have a permanent replacement, the temp guy they had was a moron.
But, since my issue had been resolved eventually, I now find the whole situation more comical than aggravating. Now every time I go into that woman's store (or probably any other in the area) she will be the butt of the joke. If i do see her next, my first line will be "Dont worry about that issue the other day, I was able to get the refund done at another store. And hey, I can understand why you get so bitchy, if I was in my early 50's and still worked here id be angry too." (she's probably in her mid 30s)

Yes and no- disc 1 is the game, and disc 2 is bonus material. Most Gamestops will take in the first disc if that's all you have.
The MVP membership allows you unlimited disc cleanings at the store you signed up at. The punch card allows you to have your discs cleaned at any other store.
Well, the bastards at my local store (where I signed up for MVP) were punching my card :bomb:. See, even more reason not to re-up my MVP!

I had a slight issue today at GS with that but the other clerk cleared it up for him. I also had to correct the Transformers game (by default they pick the first one and not "Transformers The Game" - the difference is $1.50 vs $5.50!). Also, the guy told me he did the 30% promo when he clearly didn't. He thought that because I bought a game and had credit left over that meant I got the promo bonus (his logic: I had $40 credit after base trades + Edge. Game cost $20, leaving me with $20 extra - thus the 30% was applied! WTF?). It really makes me uncomfortable when I have to tell people at stores how their promos or systems work. I've been doing a lot of this recently with this GS promo and with the F4 store inventory trick at Blockbuster ;).

I tried to use my card the first time, and they told me that it's only for other stores. However, they're a little iffy when it comes to matching trade in values so it's a tradeoff.

Hmm...interesting development. Just found this article while searching the net to see if I could find any new ways to make Gamefly cheaper.

Blockbuster.com to Launch Online Game Rental Pilot in Cleveland; Plans Continue for Nationwide Launch Before Year End

DALLAS, May 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Blockbuster Inc. (NYSE: BBI, BBI.B), a global leader in entertainment, today announced that in keeping with its previously disclosed plans to pilot an online video game rental offering by summer, the Company would be launching the program in the Cleveland area June 30. Blockbuster plans to expand the program nationwide before the end of the year, making it the only by-mail service to offer both movie and game rentals.

"BLOCKBUSTER(R) stores already rent more video games than anyone else - in-store or online - so giving our consumers the ability to rent games from our online service is a natural progression for our business," said Bob Barr, Vice President and General Manager of Blockbuster.com. "This pilot allows us to test a variety of implementation details and gather invaluable key learnings and consumer insights before finalizing and launching a national online game rental offering."

The Cleveland pilot test will be open to all BLOCKBUSTER Total Access(TM) and BLOCKBUSTER(R) By Mail subscribers. Subscribers in the pilot test will be able to opt-in to add the hottest Wii, PS2, PS3 and Xbox 360 games to their current online rental queue for an incremental monthly fee, which will only be charged for billing cycles in which they have actually rented games. For the set fee, subscribers can rent as many games as they want during the month, one game out at a time. The game rentals will count toward the total number of rentals a subscriber is allowed under their current online subscription plan. Additionally, Total Access subscribers will get the same in-store exchange benefits with their by-mail game rentals as they do with movies under their current plan.

Blockbuster.com offers two primary types of online movie subscription plans. BLOCKBUSTER(R) By Mail plans offer online-only service, with online rentals delivered and returned by mail. These plans are perfect for consumers who want the simplicity of online rentals, as well as those without a BLOCKBUSTER(R) store in their local area. BLOCKBUSTER Total Access(TM) plans deliver online rentals by mail plus the option of exchanging online rentals for free in-store movie rentals or discounted game rentals up to monthly plan limits at participating BLOCKBUSTER(R) stores.
Just when I think I'm out, they pull me back in! :bomb:

I'll wait till pricing. BBV makes bone-headed moves and the only reason I could see myself using the service is if it's cheaper or faster than gamefly. Gamefly has a fair price (never hurts to knock a few bucks off though) but it has slow shipping. And it takes forever to get new releases since gamefly seems to not have many in stock.

Well, yeah, pricing will always be a huge factor, but this is the main draw:

I've been astonished by the near total absence of a company that does games and movies at all (let alone on one plan). Gameznflix did this, but did a terrible job at it (did everybody know they went completely under and pulled their website without giving customers any kind of warning? I read that this morning).

I'm also surprised that Netflix hasn't started offering games, but with the business they do, it's probably not necessary. This could be BBV's only chance at turning things around. As long as they don't try charging something like $35 a month for 1 movie and 1 game out at a time, I think it could be highly successful. Maybe all those games that were pulled from stores recently got dumped into this? I know everybody suspected a liquidator, but why sell off your stock when you're about to start a nationwide service?

The story had been that they were going to charge your normal plan prince + $5 each month that you actually rented a game.

Huh? Mercs 2 for 4.99 and Far Cry 2 for 9.99? Which system? And was it a franchise? I've only seen Mercs 2 for $14.99 and Far Cry 2 for $19.99.

Thanks, osugsxr. Just checked one of my local (non-franchise) stores. Mercs 2 was $9.99 and Far Cry 2 was $24.99 for PS3. The previous two prices I had were for 360. Oh well, still might pick up Mercs 2 for $10.

far cry was 24.99 with manul, the one I found was in the clear plastic without anything else. I would buy mercs2 for $10, its not a bad game at all. so far pretty fun

Well, there wasn't too much in Phoenix, found about 3 stores out of 15 that I tried. Fortunately, the ones I did find were stacked with ps2 games and I came out with a pretty good haul!

Some interesting tidbits though. At one store where they had a few 360 games (though none worth their value even at $7) I talked to an employee and mentioned that other stores had received better xbox 360 games. He told me that they had too but that he personally had grabbed them all as trade fodder. Not that I can blame the guy, I mean he is stuck working at bbv :), but still not going to get my hopes up on actually finding any halo3's etc.

Also, and this one is highly ymmv / hearsay etc, but I stopped by today to mop up on anything that was left after I gave others a chance. The lady checking me out asked if she could swap out the cases from the clear to some nondescript opaque black cases. I said sure but made sure to ask why and if they were expecting more. She said yes (and at the same price point as well). She was definitely not sure about how soon since they had just received a shipment but perhaps a glimmer of hope there (also mentioned that their truck was coming tomorrow, ie Thursday, as opposed to the Tuesday truck they normally get).

Perhaps nothing there, but thought I'd share what I heard!

hopefully the blockbuster pilot area will include Akron as well... We are only 30 mind south

One thing to keep in mind about blockbuster is they recently changed their total access exchange policy under the veil of eliminating late fees. Now they do not ship your mailed movies until you return your in store movies. Which significantly reduces the number of movies that you can get per month. I wrote them to complain and they gave me a free month of service. Not what I was looking for hit I guess I'll wait to cancel until the month is up.

What is wrong with working at BBV?

Man, that sounds too good to be true. The 2 at a time plan is what...$13? That makes for 1 movie at a time and 1 game at a time for $18 a month? I'd be all over that.

Nothing in principal and no offense intended, but can't get mad at somebody taking advantage of the flip when he makes like 7 bucks an hour.
Scored: Valkyrie Profile 2 (PS2) $3 is not bad deal and keep my SEALED copy in side the cabinet :)
Yeah, I picked up a FF XII for $2.99 so I can play that copy and keep my originally overpriced and overproduced Gamestop exclusive FF XII "LE" sealed. It has come to my attention that this LE is actually becoming worth something now. I should have known with all things FF that even overproduced/overprinted games (in the main series anyway) gain value eventually if they remain sealed. Weird stuff ;).

I'm just kicking myself for not getting the used copies I saw at every GS a few months back - they had clearly gutted new copies to sell as used, making them dirt cheap after Edge + 10% coupon. I would have preferred one of those as my playing copy but oh well...

That's cool, I had to say something though because we have retail employees at this site that give us a ton of information and I do not like it when I feel like someone (especially a new person) runs down the job these people have.

Sorry for going off topic IO, delete if you want.

I finally used up the last of my flipping credit (stored up from December and January) to grab three 360 games at Gamestop (for the price of 2). Got Midnight club LA, COD4, and Halo Wars, and this is a good day :)

visited the last bbv im willing to drive to in order to see what they had. didn't want to make myself wonder if i missed out on a guitar hero world tour or something. 40 miles and an hour later, all i got was 4 measly games.

does BBV take disc only games? I just got xblades from GS' B2G1, unfortunately, they put it in a generic case with no manual.

I called a BBV but the girl didn't seem too sure.

They do not anymore, so you're screwed !!

Gamecrazy will however, and as of last Friday were giving 30$ after MVP.

aww crap. Here's the conversation I had with the girl.

Me: hello, i was wondering if BBV accepted disc only for trade ins
BBV: no, you need at least the case
Me: Okay, will any case do or do I need the original
BBV: umm....uhhh...
Me: *waits a response*
BBV: I think you need the original case
Me: Okay thank you.

I thought maybe she wasn't sure. But it sounds like I may have to go to gamecrazy.

A BBV near me in Hawaii has 5 for $10 all PS/2, Xbox, PSP, DS and B2G1 on Wii, 360, and PS3 games. Needless to say they were picked clean, but I was able to find some flipping fodder.

I noticed at my local BBV, many of those clearnece games have somehow turned into used games, many with higher prices than the clearence price -_-

For people trying to move GS credit to BBV for any leftover POGs, Tenchu stealth assassins for wii is good for moving credit.

Tenchu 19.99 (Base) at GS to 19$ at blockbuster

I'm almost positive that they require the original case, and that this is a newer requirement that the corporation has amended.

fuck. I opened my copy since my friend wanted to play it for all of two hours before he got bored. Oh well. I wasn't going to sell it anyway.
I know trading in the Singstar bundle PS3 at BBV is YMMV but TRU is putting the bundle on clearance for $9.98 (starting on 6/1/09). I'm not sure about it's TIV, though.

If it's still $36 I may try and talk my local WM into PMing, since they have 3-6 copies of the Singstar bundle in their case.

My closest BBV had a copy of GTAIV for PS3 NEW for $30 tonight when I was there, though I still have my two SE copies SEALED from the clearance, so I'm good as far as copies of the game go for now.

If anyone knows, about how often do blockbusters get shipments of disc only games? Just curious, should go check out my blockbuster tomorrow and see what they have.

About once ever 24 years, iirc
fuck. I opened my copy since my friend wanted to play it for all of two hours before he got bored. Oh well. I wasn't going to sell it anyway.
Completely off topic but I actually found one of these (FF XII CE that is) at GS today - got it for $8.39 after coupon + Edge. However, it is pretty beat up and is definitely not one of the mint gutted copies I saw there a few months back (why didn't I buy one of those!?).

As for BBV, I went to one I should have thought of before (but it is pretty far - about 30 miles). I must have missed some good stuff because they still had a lot of 360 and PS2 games. But interestingly enough, even though they still had 30 or so PS2 games, not a single one was worth anything for trading to GS. Based on how many copies of GH III they had I figure they must have had a nice stock last week - why is it only the stores on the fringes of a big metro area get these shipments? I'm closer to a bigger area and there was very little sent here. Bah...

Anyway, I think I may know who got to them though (a certain CAG who is near me - I was roaming in his area today ;)). Still, this is the first store I've seen with ANY new 360 games from this round (I still see leftovers from Presidents Day). There were a few things I probably would have gotten if I didn't already have complete copies (like LOTR:BFME II).

5/30 TIVs:

:wii:
Baja 1000: Score International - $5.75
Big League Sports - $9
Bolt - $8
Ford Racing Off Road - $5.25
Game Party II - $9
My Sims - $9
Rapala Tournament Fishing! - $9.50
Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles - $9
Sim City Creator - $8
Tenchu: Shadow Assassins - $5.50
We Ski - $9

:360:
GTA IV - $15

Few decent price drops this week at Bbv. Ps3 mirrors edge dropped to $14.99. X360 tales of vesperia $24.99 All changes this week dropped by $10 which is unusual since it usually drops in $5 increments. Not much at my store but might be some other good stuff out there.
