Welcome to the Official CAG Blockbuster/Gamerush video game deal thread.

Sadly, Blockbuster has cut down it's maximum trade-in value from $33-$35 to $25 or so and dropped all other values along with it. So welcome to the new world of Blockbuster featuring Gamestop trade-in prices (but without the Edge card and frequent trade-in deals to make it more appealing). Continue on if you feel like there is any need...

ALERT: Buy 1 Get 1 50% off sale through June 7th!

http://www.facebook.com/blockbusterinc?v=app_17037175766

Blockbuster is currently running a Buy 1 get 1 50% off sale. Below is a list of $14.99 and under games from the last sale just to give you an idea of prices. However, all games $4.99 and UP count for this sale. So, for example you could get God of War III for $39.99 and get half off New Super Mario Bros. Wii (also $39.99 normally).

What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos, post any trade-in values you have obtained, and discuss new and used game selection and availability. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Gamerush/Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

Due to the questionable stability of the Gamerush (and Blockbuster for that matter) brand, it is also permissible to discuss ways of converting credit from Blockbuster to other stores (ie, which games may be used for trading in to other stores such as Gamecrazy or EB/GS). As of right now, we have no indication of Gamerush's imminent demise, but given Blockbuster's ongoing financial difficulties we need to be aware of the possibility.

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Gamerush store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (GR to GC to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from GR.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blockbuster Game Trading Info
- You must sign up for a trade account in addition to your regular Blockbuster account
- You must sign up for a new trade account at every store you wish to trade at, even if using the same main account
- Trade-in credit can be placed onto your store account or onto a "Value" card
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- However, credit can be transferred from the store account to a card at any time
- Value cards can be used at any location
- Clerks at one store cannot see your trading/purchasing history at another store via your account
- Gamerush stores often do not get new game stock until the Friday of the release week, thus a few days later than most retailers
- Depending on state law you may or may not get sales tax added to your trade-ins (and thus get more than normal). You will always be charged sales tax where applicable on purchases, even when using credit from a Value card.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush vs. regular Blockbusters
All Blockbuster game-related discussion belongs here. Most threads created in the Deals forum will be merged in to here. There seems to be the impression by many CAGs that if they don't have a Gamerush store near them (see here for a list of GR stores: http://www.blockbuster.com/content/v.4.286.1.0/media/gameStoreList.pdf) then this thread does not apply to them. However, regular (non-GR) Blockbuster stores often run the same promos and generally have the same trade-in values. I'm going to elaborate on the last sentence as people apparently don't understand that when I say regular BB's have the same trade-in values as Gamerush that it means regular Blockbuster stores accept game trade-ins just like Gamerush stores.

The key differences:
- Only Gamerush stores sell used video game hardware and generally have a much wider selection of new hardware. Many regular BB stores had a PS3 bundle available over Christmas 2007 and since then they have expanded their hardware sales. As of right now (Dec 2008) most Blockbuster stores are selling PS3's, Xbox 360's, Wii's, and DS's. They do not sell PSP's. However, they have also started selling other electronics including Blu-ray players, portable DVD players, and digital picture frames. As a result of not selling used hardware, however, regular Blockbuster stores will not take hardware in for trades.

- Both Gamerush and regular Blockbuster stores take preorders for new games for a $5 deposit (or you can pay any other amount beyond that). Gamerush stores will get many more games in than the regular stores but unfortunately a preorder at either place is not a guarantee you will get the game. Sometimes they do not get certain titles in even if you preorder them months in advance. And even if they do get them, it tends to be a few days later than other stores.

- While many Gamerush stores have cut back on their new game stock, most regular (non-GR) Blockbusters have started selling new games. They usually have a very limited selection of top-selling new 360, PS3, and Wii games.

- Trade-in values are controlled centrally and are uniform across all Gamerush and Blockbuster locations EXCEPT if the Blockbuster is a franchise location. You can tell from the receipt if your store is a franchise store. All Gamerush stores are corporate-owned so they will have uniform pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Featured Preorders
Most Blockbuster stores (in addition to Gamerush stores of course) are featuring several games for preorder. $5 is required for a deposit. There are a few others in addition to what is listed below:

Multiplatform
Beatles Rock Band
Madden 10

:360:

:ps3:

:wii:

:ds:

They usually get these featured games in on release day like any other game retailer (though note - as of late they have been very bad about this and have gotten many games several days late!). Note that you can preorder just about any other game as the system will allow them to preorder anything they have listed (yes, even at regular stores). I have preordered Mario Super Sluggers and Dragon Quest IV myself even though they are not "featured" as preorders. However, if it is not a featured preorder they may or may not get it in, and it may arrive as late as Friday of the release week (postscript - Mario Super Sluggers did indeed arrive on Friday when every other store had it Tues. or Weds. and Dragon Quest IV never arrived).

Of course you can cancel a preorder at any time and get your deposit back or switch it to another game, even after the game comes out. So don't worry about preordering something they might not get - you can always switch it to something else. However, since I've always used credit for purchasing things at Blockbuster I'm not sure how they would handle a cancellation of a cash deposit. They may simply issue a credit to your account so beware of that if placing a cash deposit on a preorder.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Trade-In Deals
There are no trade-in deals at this time nor have there been for a very very long time. They did however just recently cut down all their trade-in values to Gamestop-like levels (but without deals to make them more appealing as at GS).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade-In Values
Trade-in price quotes will now be maintained by CAG Friend of Sonic in the THIRD post of this thread. The second post will continue to highlight specific games used to transfer credit from Blockbuster to Gamestop and vice versa.

Trade-in prices are usually universal at both Blockbuster and Gamerush, but can be wildly different at franchise Blockbuster stores. Used game prices change on Sunday with trade-in price drops following the next day (Monday). Thus any quotes given in this thread will almost certainly be good through Sunday of the current week. If you want to be sure to get the same value another CAG has reported then do your trading by Sunday as the price may drop on Monday.

Also note that many stores will no longer accept video games without cover art. This is the official policy for DVD trade-ins but apparently many clerks will confuse the two and not allow it for games either. Just beware that it might be a hassle if you have a disc-only game to trade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush website
The old Gamerush web site is now defunct, but the following link will take you to Blockbuster online, which may or may not have some info there about games. I dunno - I haven't looked at it in years.

This did not work at my local Blockbuster, everything rang up full price and the buy 1 get one half off didn't even work. RIIIIIP! EDIT: Local being the Rosemount MN location.

But at least I found an ultra cheap copy of saints row 2 for 7.50 out the door.

Great deal on Saints Row 2, That is a hell of a fun game. Just finished the campaign on my PS3 last month.

Pretty nice haul today. The glitch was working in Michigan at least until 2:30 pm at two different stores. I even bought one game by itself and got 50% off. Picked up the following games after 50% off:

Army of Two: 40th day :ps3: $20
Dante's Inferno :ps3: $20
2x God of War III :ps3: $20 each
Darksiders :ps3: $15
Bayonetta :360: $15
Dark Void :ps3: $10

Awesome deal. Hopefully it's still going on tomorrow.

The one game by itself WAS the glitch.

Even at b1g1 50% off, toy story mania and rock band beatles (wii and ps3) are nearly 2 to 1 flips to best buy, but you have to wait a month to get it.

I'm heading out now to hit up one last store. As Safire says, even at B1G1 50% there are some deals to be had, so I figure it will be worth it either way.
The one game by itself WAS the glitch.
Well yeah, but what I was trying to convey was that the cashier I had didn't have any problem with me getting one game by itself at half price even though he had heard nothing about the sale. There were no calls placed to a manager or anything to check what was going on like others have reported. Its nice to have a local BBV where common sense is scarce. :)

I just got back from checking a couple more stores and struck out on any good finds. At least they knew about the sale, unlike before.

One store had a copy of Lego RB for PS3 @15, but only one copy and I couldn't find anything else with which to pair it up.

The best find at the other store was Wet for PS3 @15, but I had the same problem as at the other store.

So far it looks like last months sale was too successful as I'm just not finding much of anything good.

I guess it's a good thing that I won't be spending much this time around:whistle2:|

Walked into 2 stores, neither with signage. I didn't even ask if there was a sale because, after looking at the racks, there just aren't 2 games I really want to get right now. All the other sales (including BBV's!) have stocked me up so well :[ One of them did have 4x Toy Story Mania...but not complete, which knocks off some of the BB TIV right?
:[ One of them did have 4x Toy Story Mania...but not complete, which knocks off some of the BB TIV right?
Yes.

i missed this sale til too late, they probly have it all fixed now :)

I stopped by but no luck, could have done well as they have 360 star ocean and a few wii avatars, oh well.

I might go buy Dark Void ($20) and Avatar ($20) PS3 tomorrow for $30. Then try n plat them both. Then trade them back in BestBuy and TRU respectively for $30 back. I need to stop buying platinums even if they do end up free... especially if they are bad games...but it makes me enjoy the good games even more...right? lol thanx cag.

I missed this one cuz I spent the day with my lil 6 y/o tho at a picnic at the park, so at least I have my priorities straight :)
anyone had success after 5pm? 6pm? maybe 7pm?
Yes the glitch is still working, I stopped by another BBV 10pm Eastern Coast, there was no signage.
I picked a
iconps3.gif
Killzone 2 marked $19.99 and the manager was ringing me up and she said "That's $21.xx" and then hit total .....the balance became $10.XX.

Man, I really spent too much today. Here's what I ended up getting, all $ are per copy:

2x NSMB :wii:: $20
4x Marvel Super Hero Squad :wii:: $7.50
2x Beatles Rock Band :ps3:: $7.50
1x Infamous :ps3:: $10
1x Star Ocean: The Last Hope :360:: $10
1x Wolverine Uncaged :360:: $7.50
1x Pokemon Platinum :nds:: $12.50

Flipped all but the last four for ~$180 in GS credit. I'm WAY too happy with my haul. And I was hoping to play some of my backlog today. XP
Man they must of fixed it since then, just got back from there and no go :( I think, you posted about the one in Beckett earlier right?

Either way, the BB in Logan Township NJ is a no go, sucks casue I was looking for a good price on ME2
Yep, it was the Beckett one. Sorry that they closed the deal on you :(

So today I was denied the $25 gift card for Red Dead Redemption by BB and missed out on Gamefly's Operation Flashpoint for $10 deal. Now I come in hear and find out I coulda had a $20 copy of God of War 3?! If I keep missing out on these great deals I may be forced to actually play some of my games!

for those that bayonetta ps3, it gets 28 for trade in of the day. or you could lock it in now an dhope for the best.
for those that bayonetta ps3, it gets 28 for trade in of the day. or you could lock it in now an dhope for the best.
Oh shit, I didn't know that was the trade of the day. I had it in my trade-in cart, but didn't plan on submitting it until at least tomorrow. Thanks A LOT enufs8d!!!

Rogue Warrior 360 TIV dropped to $8 :whistle2:(

I ended up buying:

The beatles rockband ps3 - 7.50
The beatles rockband ps3 - 7.50
No more Heroes 2 - 12.50
Band Hero 360 - 15
Army of 2 40th day 360 - 20
Ratchet and Clank Future a Crack in Time - 15

If I had the store credit, I would have bought $400+ worth of games. I could make a hella profit flipping them to GS, but it isn't worth it when I'm using cash money to do it. I am almost out of GS credit tho, so if anyone finds anything that's a 2x flip or better, let me know. I see from previous posts that New Super Mario Bros is a good one and of course Toy Story is great. If this glitch is still working tomorrow, I might try to buy some more, but it's tough with no GS-->BBV flips to build credit.

Edit:
I forgot to mention, that my last transaction was around 9:45pm EST.

Also, they had Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn for $19.99, so I could have bought it for $10. Is this game worth it? Is there somewhere I could sell this for a high price? It seems like one of those rare games that just keeps increasing in value.

just one question... I've been hearing the word "flip" a lot when talking about e.g. "GS to BBV flips?" I believe I have a hunch on what it means but I just want to know for sure. Thanks

If you "flip" something from one location to another, it means you're buying it at Retailer A and selling it to Retailer B.
No dice at North Huntingdon, PA. Guy at the counter reached for a sheet of paper and did an override. Luckily I thought far enough ahead to hide my debit cards deep in my wallet, so I faked I must have left my card at Target next door and left.

just one question... I've been hearing the word "flip" a lot when talking about e.g. "GS to BBV flips?" I believe I have a hunch on what it means but I just want to know for sure. Thanks
It means to buy a game at one store and trade it in at another store. The goal is to hopefully trade it in for more than you originally bought it for at the other store (GS=Gamestop, BBV=Blockbuster Video).

You have to trust me that is doesn't mean the same thing as flipping a burger on a grill or flipping your skateboard to perform tricks. You don't throw the game up in the air with a spin to see if it flips from GS to BBV. ;)

basically, buy a game at a low price, and then "flipping" it at GS/BBV/etc etc for a high trade in value

example w/ this glitch toy story mania (wii) 7.50
flip it Best Buy for $20

Yeah that was my original hunch, thanks a lot guys but I checked out some trade in values at gamestop and they seem like horrible deals. So what do you guys believe is the best place to "flip" and I don't mean flipping a burger or a skateboard lol.

There's no "best" place to flip. You need to research prices at store X, then compare them to TIVs at store Y, to find potential flips and decide whether it's worth your time to pursue them. Keep in mind also that TIVs can change quickly without warning.

Sometimes people will post flips that they've found, but in general if you post asking what the good flips are, you will be ignored and/or told to do your own legwork.

Also, if people who are in the habit of flipping know of a good deal, they likely won't say until they have cleaned out all their local locations before sharing. So it is far better to do the checking yourself. I recommend liberal use of the internet, or save store phone numbers on your cell for Gamestop. Then you can call and ask what the TiV is for games on the spot.

Better off knowing ahead of time what games have $20 plus trade ins that are likely to be sold used due to age and popularity during release. Then simply compare that to the in store values for these posted deals. For instance the New Super Mario for Wii, more than 20 dollar trade in and costs 20 after the half off.

It's fun to learn. There are sites for bestbuy tiv's, tru tiv's and cag has most gamestop tiv's. I wish there was a bbv tiv center, but those are reported often like ftf or rw. CAG is great but yeah, check the threads often/etc. I went to bbv and it sux not knowing what a good flip is as one system may tiv for $6 while another $20 (i.e. Avatar for ps3/wii). TRU changes daily sometimes, so it's risky to hold on to a game, but BestBuy is great because I can lock in Darkvoid for $20, go buy it tomorrow for 20(hopefully 10) and plat it, and then trade it in a week :) The only problem is bestbuy is a bit slow on the turnaround...

im oldschool, i write on small pieces of paper and then when i get there I try to remember what they have a bunch of or rare ones then check again at home. I just call gamestop if I'm at a store, but there's is lately the lowest tiv's even with bonuses.

Wow, so few reports tonight...

Well, I will say that my trip out to two more stores this evening was a bust. I was busy with work and dealing with kids between my earlier successful trip (around 3:30 PM Pacific) and my later trip (8:30 PM Pacific). On the later trip I went to two stores absolutely overflowing with goodies. At neither store were they aware of the deal in any way. And at both stores I got no discount whatsoever. So it appears they just completely killed off the deal some time between 3:30 and 8:30 Pacific. I did manage to get them to override and give me 50% off one game (of two) at each store - in both cases my "test" purchases that were good values even at B1G1 50% off. But I had to leave all the other stuff behind. I really wanted to snag a Band Hero and Avatar for PS3 (my son wants the latter) plus they had a ton more stuff I didn't see at the earlier store. Oh well... This was in a different district than the other store where it worked, so it is possible there is a difference between districts. I came on here fully expecting to see all the details of when people got it to work and when it stopped working. And yet, I really see very few reports of people having it not work at all (no 50% off all games, no B1G1 50% off)!? WTF!? There had to be other people who went out in the evening to try this out!
for those that bayonetta ps3, it gets 28 for trade in of the day. or you could lock it in now an dhope for the best.
#-o You know, I saw that last night and completely forgot about it. Oh well, with a Gazelle trade-in (at $5 less) I can play and beat the game first and then send it in, so I guess that isn't too bad a trade-off.

Dude, you have to move beyond the need for store credit in these post-good TiV days. I haven't had store credit since the first day of the B1G1 last month and I don't let that stop me from getting in on deals at BBV. In fact, I've probably spent more there in the last couple months than in the last few years combined (when I was using store credit only).

But your time of 9:45 PM is interesting. I wonder if this is like the epic 5 games for $25 coupon that we had a few years back? It seemed to have gotten killed off around closing time on the East Coast. I wonder if there is a system update at that time? It seems this one died some time after 9:45 but before midnight eastern - just like that one did.

But I have to question the wisdom of all of this. BBV could have made a killing with a true 50% off sale - they just should have gone for it once the glitch occured. I mean, for the most part, these games are going to sit around till they drop below $15 and get bought up during a B1G1 anyway. It would make more sense for them to get $20-$25 for them now while they can. They need to face facts, people don't think of them as a retail gaming outlet - and people are really not going to shell out $40-$50 for what they assume will be beat-to-hell former rentals. However, a true 50% off sale like this would have brought some attention to that aspect of their store and made them a ton of money in the process. I'd say they would actually make more than if they let these titles sit on the shelf for 6-9 more months and end up selling them for $20 or less (or even worse, for $15 and during a B1G1). The originally intended buy 1 get 1 50% sale off is not going to generate a ton of sales though as that just amounts to 25% or less off of the regular used prices.

It was sad just how many copies my local BBV has of certain games that as you said won't be sold until the $20 and under bin. I counted over 10 copies of COD MW2, Assassin's Creed 2, Tekken 6, and a few others for the xbox360. 50% off would have at least gotten some kind of return on them instead of having them collect dust on the shelf.

yeah I didn't want to be that guy that just asks for everything I was jw cuz i'm new to this n all but thanks for all the help guys, and i gotta admit this is prolly the best site on the web... well this and porn lol jk no but really...

This is exactly my point. More multi-copy games: Avatar 360 (at least 8 at one store and it already is $20 - most of those probably won't sell till it is $10 and during a B1G1 for a total of $5 each), God of War III (even my dinky local store has like 5 or 6 of these), Mario & Sonic Winter Olympics (10 or more at one store!), and there are many more. Maybe they'll see the huge sales they had in some locations Tuesday and reconsider. But I doubt it. But a pure 50% off has a way of tricking the mind of even a seasoned CAG like myself. I have such a huge backlog that I rarely buy anything at "high" used prices (I either get the really big stuff new at release or wait for $15 or under used pricing). However, the lure of 50% off relatively new games got me to bite on some things (paying cash, too, mind you) that I wouldn't normally: like GoW III and Dante's Inferno for $20, and Bayonetta for $15. Imagine what that lure would do to the casual shopper? They could clear out all that excess rental inventory and get a big cash infusion at a time when they can also soak up former HWV and Gamecrazy customers. Maybe they hope the B1G1 50% off wil do the same, but I just don't see it that way. I guess we'll see how much they sell once they get the promo straightened out and have signage up, etc... But I'm guessing not many CAGs will be partcipating at that point.
No go here at ~5pm, neither the 50% off nor B1G1 50% off was active automatically in the system. If there is a code, the employees at my store did not know about it (they even looked through a binder and evidently didn't see it.)

edit: For anyone who missed the "Location: NJ" under my name, this was in Northern NJ.
Same here, was quite disappointed. Ended up paying two games at their respective prices.
Same here, was quite disappointed. Ended up paying two games at their respective prices.
You should at least get the B1G1 50% off. At every store I went to they found the info for this on a couple of printed sheets they had on the counter. If they don't give you that, at least, walk away and let them eat the credits...

But I'm curious as to the 5pm Eastern report of it not working - yet someone else got in on it at 9:45 PM EST? And my times were 3:30 Pacific (working - 1 1/2 hours after the 5pm Eastern report of it not working) and 8:30 Pacific (not working - after Eastern stores are closed for the most part). Maybe it is a district-by-district thing and will still be active tomorrow in some places? I've never seen such a YMMV deal at BBV before - very strange.

Ya it sucks that all the people that missed out on the "real" sale were working or busy, I was checking CAG every ten mins at work hoping I get off soon and when I got there, no one knew of the sale which was good but the glitch didn't activate but I just ended up with:
GTA: China Town Wars (14.99)
Wet (7.50) after 50% off
OH! WELL GAME CRAZY IS GONNA HAVE THE SUPER SELL ANYWAY!

Do you know if they scanned the sale barcode for the deal every time before hitting total?

He totaled it first and I think that screwed it up completely. Might try again tomorrow.

The stores around here are usually pretty late with their promos. it sucks, they're not franchises too. I had to wait a couple of days on the last BOGO they just had for it to be active.

I see what you are saying - the bar code might be interfering with the automatic 50% off all games? I'm not sure...

Early in the day (noon Pacific) on my first attempt the clerk entered that same code (I presume) and it took 50% off one but then when he totalled it, it then took 50% off the other. On my subsequent purchase that did not seem to happen though - I'm not sure what happened in the 10 minutes in between there. The only difference was that I just had 2 games the first time and 6 the second. Someone early on said it didn't work as expected with more than 4 games. However, I had no problem getting 6 games later on one transaction at another store (and got 50% off each one).

At the last two stores I went to tonight they hit total (without scanning any bar code because they didn't even know about the sale) and nothing happened. When I told them about the sale, at one they just overrode it with a 50% credit (for one of the two games). At the other they actually entered a bar code number as the sheet they looked at had no barcode even though it said to scan one ;). So on that one I got it as a "Coupon" credit which is what it said when it worked automatically. So, it seems, there is a bar code (or at least a code) that will apply the discount as it is supposed to be (1 game out of 2 at 50% off). At least in my later cases I would not have gotten 50% off all the games, anyway, as they did it at first without scanning anything but the games.

But at the one store mid-day where the manager realized it must be a glitch but encouraged me to get whatever I wanted (and was also calling her other employees to tell them to get in on it) it worked like a charm - hitting total resulted in 50% off each game. She even tried it after just one game and it worked, then tried it after 3 more games and it worked on those 3.

Well, for the automatic codes they can't be "late" as they have no control over it. They can certainly be late with putting sale signage up (most stores are) but if it was going to work automatically it would have worked whether they were up to speed or not.

Strange sale....

Thanks for answering my question. Was just hoping we did something wrong, really wanted those two games at half off.

Yeah, this is confusing as hell... I mean, the B1G1 always causes problems because of the need to pair up like-priced games and hit total in between each pair, but that is nothing compared to this! Plus we've been through the B1G1 $14.99 and under several times - this is all new!

Both the games I tried this with were 39.99 so I figured since it was paired off at a like price it should have worked, not sure where I went wrong or if this location just didn't have this working at all. Anyone else have any luck with this working in Minnesota?

I definitely agree with you about spending cash. I don't like to think about it, but I spent well over $200 cash during the B1G1 and I traded in a total of 15 copies of Rogue Warrior. I was trading in 2 copies to every store and I haven't done that ever. The thing is that I dont have a job, but I have over 300 next gen games I haven't even touched yet. I'm also a hardworking student with a huge college workload, but I'm unemployed and living at home. If I spend money from my bank account at BBV, right now that mean's we have to put off paying bills like electicity, cable, mortgage, water, etc.
so anyone willing to try this glitch again today? :bouncy:
I have some cash stashed from selling videogames to someone and I'm blowing it all on this sale if it still works. I'm heading out later today and if I can get the deal to work, I'll post immediately. I would love to get Borderlands and Avatar. I'd also like to get punch out and dead space extraction, but I know that's extremely unlikely. There are a lot of cheaper games I'd probably pick up for 50% off that I didn't get during the B1G1. What sucks is that I'm still awake now at 7:45AM, so I probably won't get out there until this afternoon after I get some sleep.
