Welcome to the Official CAG Blockbuster/Gamerush video game deal thread.

Sadly, Blockbuster has cut down it's maximum trade-in value from $33-$35 to $25 or so and dropped all other values along with it. So welcome to the new world of Blockbuster featuring Gamestop trade-in prices (but without the Edge card and frequent trade-in deals to make it more appealing). Continue on if you feel like there is any need...

ALERT: Buy 1 Get 1 50% off sale through June 7th!

http://www.facebook.com/blockbusterinc?v=app_17037175766

Blockbuster is currently running a Buy 1 get 1 50% off sale. Below is a list of $14.99 and under games from the last sale just to give you an idea of prices. However, all games $4.99 and UP count for this sale. So, for example you could get God of War III for $39.99 and get half off New Super Mario Bros. Wii (also $39.99 normally).

What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos, post any trade-in values you have obtained, and discuss new and used game selection and availability. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Gamerush/Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

Due to the questionable stability of the Gamerush (and Blockbuster for that matter) brand, it is also permissible to discuss ways of converting credit from Blockbuster to other stores (ie, which games may be used for trading in to other stores such as Gamecrazy or EB/GS). As of right now, we have no indication of Gamerush's imminent demise, but given Blockbuster's ongoing financial difficulties we need to be aware of the possibility.

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Gamerush store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (GR to GC to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from GR.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blockbuster Game Trading Info
- You must sign up for a trade account in addition to your regular Blockbuster account
- You must sign up for a new trade account at every store you wish to trade at, even if using the same main account
- Trade-in credit can be placed onto your store account or onto a "Value" card
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- However, credit can be transferred from the store account to a card at any time
- Value cards can be used at any location
- Clerks at one store cannot see your trading/purchasing history at another store via your account
- Gamerush stores often do not get new game stock until the Friday of the release week, thus a few days later than most retailers
- Depending on state law you may or may not get sales tax added to your trade-ins (and thus get more than normal). You will always be charged sales tax where applicable on purchases, even when using credit from a Value card.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush vs. regular Blockbusters
All Blockbuster game-related discussion belongs here. Most threads created in the Deals forum will be merged in to here. There seems to be the impression by many CAGs that if they don't have a Gamerush store near them (see here for a list of GR stores: http://www.blockbuster.com/content/v.4.286.1.0/media/gameStoreList.pdf) then this thread does not apply to them. However, regular (non-GR) Blockbuster stores often run the same promos and generally have the same trade-in values. I'm going to elaborate on the last sentence as people apparently don't understand that when I say regular BB's have the same trade-in values as Gamerush that it means regular Blockbuster stores accept game trade-ins just like Gamerush stores.

The key differences:
- Only Gamerush stores sell used video game hardware and generally have a much wider selection of new hardware. Many regular BB stores had a PS3 bundle available over Christmas 2007 and since then they have expanded their hardware sales. As of right now (Dec 2008) most Blockbuster stores are selling PS3's, Xbox 360's, Wii's, and DS's. They do not sell PSP's. However, they have also started selling other electronics including Blu-ray players, portable DVD players, and digital picture frames. As a result of not selling used hardware, however, regular Blockbuster stores will not take hardware in for trades.

- Both Gamerush and regular Blockbuster stores take preorders for new games for a $5 deposit (or you can pay any other amount beyond that). Gamerush stores will get many more games in than the regular stores but unfortunately a preorder at either place is not a guarantee you will get the game. Sometimes they do not get certain titles in even if you preorder them months in advance. And even if they do get them, it tends to be a few days later than other stores.

- While many Gamerush stores have cut back on their new game stock, most regular (non-GR) Blockbusters have started selling new games. They usually have a very limited selection of top-selling new 360, PS3, and Wii games.

- Trade-in values are controlled centrally and are uniform across all Gamerush and Blockbuster locations EXCEPT if the Blockbuster is a franchise location. You can tell from the receipt if your store is a franchise store. All Gamerush stores are corporate-owned so they will have uniform pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Featured Preorders
Most Blockbuster stores (in addition to Gamerush stores of course) are featuring several games for preorder. $5 is required for a deposit. There are a few others in addition to what is listed below:

Multiplatform
Beatles Rock Band
Madden 10

:360:

:ps3:

:wii:

:ds:

They usually get these featured games in on release day like any other game retailer (though note - as of late they have been very bad about this and have gotten many games several days late!). Note that you can preorder just about any other game as the system will allow them to preorder anything they have listed (yes, even at regular stores). I have preordered Mario Super Sluggers and Dragon Quest IV myself even though they are not "featured" as preorders. However, if it is not a featured preorder they may or may not get it in, and it may arrive as late as Friday of the release week (postscript - Mario Super Sluggers did indeed arrive on Friday when every other store had it Tues. or Weds. and Dragon Quest IV never arrived).

Of course you can cancel a preorder at any time and get your deposit back or switch it to another game, even after the game comes out. So don't worry about preordering something they might not get - you can always switch it to something else. However, since I've always used credit for purchasing things at Blockbuster I'm not sure how they would handle a cancellation of a cash deposit. They may simply issue a credit to your account so beware of that if placing a cash deposit on a preorder.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Trade-In Deals
There are no trade-in deals at this time nor have there been for a very very long time. They did however just recently cut down all their trade-in values to Gamestop-like levels (but without deals to make them more appealing as at GS).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade-In Values
Trade-in price quotes will now be maintained by CAG Friend of Sonic in the THIRD post of this thread. The second post will continue to highlight specific games used to transfer credit from Blockbuster to Gamestop and vice versa.

Trade-in prices are usually universal at both Blockbuster and Gamerush, but can be wildly different at franchise Blockbuster stores. Used game prices change on Sunday with trade-in price drops following the next day (Monday). Thus any quotes given in this thread will almost certainly be good through Sunday of the current week. If you want to be sure to get the same value another CAG has reported then do your trading by Sunday as the price may drop on Monday.

Also note that many stores will no longer accept video games without cover art. This is the official policy for DVD trade-ins but apparently many clerks will confuse the two and not allow it for games either. Just beware that it might be a hassle if you have a disc-only game to trade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush website
The old Gamerush web site is now defunct, but the following link will take you to Blockbuster online, which may or may not have some info there about games. I dunno - I haven't looked at it in years.
Hijacking your thread derail: Buy games that are low in print run, and highly rated, for ANY system. Sit on them for 10 years = Jackpot.

My wins over the years and sell prices:
Tengen Tetris for NES (recalled): $100 used (paid $30 new)
Super Puzzle Fighter PS1 (short print run): $50 used (paid $20 new)
Dreamcast Ethernet Adapter (limited availability): $150 used (paid $80 new)
Sega Master System with 3D GLASSES: used $150 (new $75)
Snatcher Sega-CD: don't recall what I sold this for.

Lucas Arts PC-CD Talkies: Day of Tentacle, Indiana Jones, Monkey Island,
Paid ~$10 for all 3 new, sold them NEW about 15 years later for $175!

I've often bundled good games with shit systems to up the package price. Super Street Fighter II w/Capcom 6-button controller, Star Control, and Lucienne's Quest helped sell my 3DO for ~$250. I seem to recall having some good bundled games when selling my Sega Nomad too.

Still have Unopened Conker's Bad Fur Day Reloaded Xbox. Paid $8, now worth over $100. I just found this out when I ALMOST opened it on April 15th to see if XBL had any DLC for it. Thankfully I plugged it into ebay first.

Sitting on a complete copy of MVC2 for Dreamcast too, lost a little value after DLC releases, but still one of the best ports of the game and pretty rare.

A friend of mine had the US version of Panzer Dragoon Saga bought new, only 30k released in the USA, he would not sell it :) Radiant Silvergun and Guardian Heroes were some other valuable Saturn Title. I never had a Saturn :(

If you didn't own these titles when they were in circulation your best bets are garage sales, pawn shops, flea markets. Places where people don't know the values.
I'd hate to think how much you lost on the 3DO if you had bought that one when it first came out.
I'd hate to think how much you lost on the 3DO if you had bought that one when it first came out.
Oh GOD no. I'm a CAG, I never buy anything at full retail. $700 is not something I ever plan to spend on a game system. I sold the 3DO when it was worthless, it was the games that made it valuable. I think I paid under $200 for the system with several bundled games, I don't recall. I definitely got my use out of it, I actually liked my 3DO.

Raiser, that is some really interesting info. I'd love to find out how you specifically determine which games are rare; basically, how do you know what the print runs are? In terms of an investment, are we perhaps better suited to flip games and turn a profit? It takes some work to convert $10 to $150+ via sales such as the Blockbuster deal, but you find the profit much faster than you would a long term investment. Of course, it is pretty cool to just hold onto a game for awhile much like trading cards.

Also, Conker Life & Reloaded doesn't seem to be going for too much on eBay. Is that just for a sealed copy?

Still hoping for an update this week. Blockbusters around me are picked clean, except for a bunch of Drawn to Lifes.

People are listing sealed copies for $90+ but I didn't find any completed listings for that much. Only completed "new" listing I found was
I'm expecting a Rogue Warrior from Gamestop today. Anyone know if its $22 TIV held?
Someone on the previous page posted that it held today.

Just called and had them look up price of Lego Rock Band (360); still $19.99 . And yes, I know the rule is "NEVER call about a deal", hence why I made sure to call an out of the way one I went to last week that only had 1-2 copies of it (as opposed to my new favorite store that had 5+ copies) lol.
"Hey, I'd like to return these games."
"Why?"
"They don't work."
"Okay, here's your money back."
"Thanks, I'd like to buy back those non-working games, please."
Of course you wouldn't do that; I bought another copy from another store, did the B1G1, and returned the originals at the one I originally purchased it from. I literally just bought 4 games from them before the B1G1 offer started.

Got a few more today:

50 Cent: Blood on the Sand 360 -$15
Beatles:Rock Band 360 - Free
Bully 360 - $7
Full Auto - Free

I hear ya. I know I've probably burned at least one tank of gas just going around to the BBVs in Houston. I think I hit most of them now, except toward the Gulfgate area and further south.
anybody pick up Super Mario Galaxy for 9.99?

my store quoted me at 14.99
just wondering b/c the original post says it's 9.99
Ah, yeah, sorry, just checked my receipt (from the first day of the sale) and it is indeed $14.99.

Hey, wait a second, I went to edit the OP and it is listed as $14.99 - see the "$14.99" above the huge section of Wii games that includes SSBB and Super Mario Galaxy?

I did add the new end date info to the OP though.
looks like no price drops this week. :(
That's a bummer. Looking to pick up Wet if it drops. So, barring another extension, we have one last shot at a price drop, correct?

So, barring another extension, we have one last shot at a price drop, correct
?

yep, and only 1 day. if there is a price change next week it will be on monday and the sale ends next monday.

Guess it was my lucky day. Went to two BBVs during the first couple days and didn't find anything. Figuring that my closest BBV was looted already, I hadn't gone there until yesterday. Picked up CW:RH and Ghostbusters PS3 for $11 out the door. Of course, they both had $39.99 stickers on them....
I ended up buying for about $23 with taxes...
Red Faction $15 (360, disc only)
Ghostbusters $10 (360, disc only)
Spiderman 3 $7 (360 +slipcover, for my son)
Sega Rally Revo $7 (PS3 complete)

Was going to get Transformers game for $7, but they were all scratched to shit.
I was having a hard time finding 2x of any price point $15/$10/$7 that I actually wanted, or were flippable.
MUCH better score today at a different store. Almost all their prices were mismarked, so nothing was showing $14.99. But I knew better.
All $14.99, B1G1, Complete w/Box+Docs :) $65.21 including tax = $8.15 each
:360: Overlord II X2 (one left)
:360: Beatles RockBand (last one)
:360: Transformers ROTF (last one)
:360: GTA IV (+map, +1 month GOLD!) (last one)
:360: Red Faction Guerrilla (one left)
:360: Bigs 2 (no box/docs, going to flip anyway) (last one)
:ds: Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass (last one)

Price checked the following at $19.99 (still)
:ds: Legend of Zelda Spirit Tracks
:360: RE5 (every store has many, this should drop soon)
:360: MUA2
:360: Tekken 6
:360: Lego RockBand

figured i'd bump this.. anyone have any thoughts or experience with the below?
so i'm semi bummed because over the course of this sale I've nabbed

Brutal Legend 9.99 + Hawx 15 = 15
COD WAW 6.99 + Halo Wars 15 = 15

It ended up this way because of the selection at each store where I found the pairs... anyone think or actually have a store allow a return/rebuy to rematch the b1g1? would save me $5.. which it would be worth it since I plan on checking out a few more stores around b4 the sale is over..

now I'm not bummed on finding on the selection i found.. just being on cag you know I want to maximize my game cheapiness

thoughts? suggestions? let me know.. not sure if it would be worth the headache for $5
I found Marble Mania for Wii today for $9.99 paired it up with Drawn to life for the Wii. I was going to get with Mario & Sonic at the Olympics but they sold the copy without the case. ='( At least they let me keep the case and manual though. =D

People are finding Super Mario Galaxy for $14.99?? Looks like I'll be hitting some BBVs on the way home. :D

Anybody play Drawn to Life :wii: yet? I wonder how terrible it is for so many copies to be hanging around...

So is super mario galaxy $14.99 everywhere? I have been busy with school and work thus did not know about the b1g1 till now.. I am headed to subway to pick up dinner in an hr or 2.. Blockbuster is rite next door, Ill have to check it out, because they had a good 6 or 7 of them a few weeks back (SMG...)

N/M from what I can tell it is.. I think I may head over there now out of curiosity to see if they have anything good left, id assume its all picked over.. (btw is everything already marked down??) Thanks :)

All I can say is I know my store wouldn't do a return/rebuy. We wouldn't let you return them at all unless you came back immediately with a problem or within the 30 day window with a defective product complaint.

So it's been extended a week? Woo hoo. Another week for me to not find shit cuz the local hoarders grabbed up anything good in the first couple of days.

This sale sucked this time for me.

I've found that the stores don't have issues returning them as long as you have the reciept and it's within the 30 days. Smart too, because they should know that the pre-played games they sell are all kinds of damaged most of the time.

I've had to buff so many of the games I've bought just to make sure they work okay cause I'd rather not return them if they could work, but if they are circular scratched (thank you 360), I don't buy them.

Just stopped by a store on the way home and they probably had 6 games under $14.99. The employee said some guy came in and spent $1000 on games to sell on eBay.

I found a single copy on the very first day of the sale at one store. I don't think it was a common rental conversion so the odds of finding it are gonna be pretty low. As for Drawn To Life, for whatever reason they overstocked this as a rental. I don't think the abundance of copies has anything to do with the quality of the game. I am keeping one but I haven't touched it yet so I have no idea how good/bad it is, though ;).

Yep, even when I was friendly with my local store manager she wouldn't do this for me. During the last B1G1 I had bought a few games just before and she wouldn't return/rebuy during the sale. One of the clerks had done it for me a few days before that though. I probably got him in trouble...

Meh, while there are some great Amazon/GS/etc flips, there isn't much that is sellable from this sale. He's going to have a LOT of work to do to make much off those - testing, cleaning, listing, shipping, etc... And all for just a couple of bucks per game at best. Even Beatles Rock Band has pretty much tanked - though it is probably due more to the alleged Target clearance price than the BBV copies (none at my Target of course). All of a sudden I don't feel like my ECA + 50% off code (from the Amazon trade-in deal last year) price on my day-of-release copy of Beatles Rock Band LE was such a great deal (cut the $250 down to $100 - which is too much still for what I got - love the game, but only played it for 2 days). At least I've been able to recoup a bit of that through some Gazelle trade-ins that I locked in when it was still $20.

I saw a shelf placard the other night at the one Blockbuster I visited a bit further away saying they now have a guarantee on games that 'if it doesn't work like a new game then they'll refund your money on the game'.

So....loophole?

thanks for the feedback guys.. i might try and ask anyway worst case they just say no... but wondered if anyone has done this switch around to match up the cheapest games

I checked a couple local BBVs even though I shouldn't be spending any money for another couple weeks, but I couldn't resist. Though all of the BBVs were licked clean of anything solid to pick up. Even the couple POGs that were sitting around were just 4 year old sports games.

called every single store in my area and out of town

no one has super mario galaxy

they said most stores only have one rental since it's older and they won't converting that to buy b/c it's the last one

o well..

anybody know how much mario party 8 on the wii goes for at bbv?

I am from Los Angeles and have been visiting family in Glen Allen Virginia. I have been taking advantage of the B1G1 at the local BB in the area. Down below you will find my list of PS3 and psp finds. What a great deal depending on what is out there. Let me know what you think?

Picked up copies of Beatles Rock band (360) and Guitar Hero Smash Hits (Ps3) for $15, each goes for $20 at best buy. and of course more dirt 2, marvel super hero squad, and drawn to life for gazelle.

As per Drawn to Life, I tried it briefly. The novelty of drawing obscene pictures as the characters and environments wore off after about 10 minutes.

On drawn to life apparently it was a meh port, and the drawing mechanic doesn't work nearly as well as holding a stylus to a screen. I guess good core game but maybe not the best job on the wii version.

And yeah I wonder if that guy is actually ebaying all those games. With something like gazelle you could get paypal/amazon anyway, probably more money after paying for shipping on each individual title.

Wow it's been forever since I checked in here with some activity. I was able to get Beatles Rock Band for 360 and The Orange Box for PS3. Very happy. Too bad I didn't find out til today about the sale since it's the last day for it. What's Gazelle?

My BBV had 5 yes 5 copies of SM Galaxy and 4 copies of SSBM but all of them were for rental which is lame... They should mark 2-3 of them down to get rid of them.. Ugh. Anyways, I found some stuff (Red Faction, Brutal Legend, Halo Wars, Street Fighter, TMNT, DIRT, Ninja Gaiden 2, Bigs 2 and others) But I didnt really care to buy any of them. Oh ya they also had FF Disidia and GOW: COO for PSP.. So overall they had some good stuff but mehhhh.

yes this is the most frustrating thing about BBV

they say they cant convert them b/c they rent those out alot!

but this is a lie!

my store has 5 copies of SSBB...since the B1G1 free sale I've been to my store every week only one copy at a time has been rented...ugh corporate...im sure they rent well at other stores but not mine

I was able to score Mario Super Sluggers, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Power Tennis, Mario Strikers Charged, Soul Calibur Broken Destiny and Kingdom Hearts.

This was probably the best haul I've had on one of these sales with the most TIV.

It makes perfect sense to me. All they have to do is rent that copy once and they would already have made more from that then if they sold it to you. Even if those copies sat for awhile it's not rocket science to know those two games are probably rented out more than most of their wii titles.

I just don't get why people complain, take what you can get and don't have a hissy fit about the rest.
