Welcome to the Official CAG Blockbuster/Gamerush video game deal thread.

Sadly, Blockbuster has cut down it's maximum trade-in value from $33-$35 to $25 or so and dropped all other values along with it. So welcome to the new world of Blockbuster featuring Gamestop trade-in prices (but without the Edge card and frequent trade-in deals to make it more appealing). Continue on if you feel like there is any need...

ALERT: Buy 1 Get 1 50% off sale through June 7th!

http://www.facebook.com/blockbusterinc?v=app_17037175766

Blockbuster is currently running a Buy 1 get 1 50% off sale. Below is a list of $14.99 and under games from the last sale just to give you an idea of prices. However, all games $4.99 and UP count for this sale. So, for example you could get God of War III for $39.99 and get half off New Super Mario Bros. Wii (also $39.99 normally).

What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos, post any trade-in values you have obtained, and discuss new and used game selection and availability. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Gamerush/Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

Due to the questionable stability of the Gamerush (and Blockbuster for that matter) brand, it is also permissible to discuss ways of converting credit from Blockbuster to other stores (ie, which games may be used for trading in to other stores such as Gamecrazy or EB/GS). As of right now, we have no indication of Gamerush's imminent demise, but given Blockbuster's ongoing financial difficulties we need to be aware of the possibility.

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Gamerush store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (GR to GC to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from GR.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blockbuster Game Trading Info
- You must sign up for a trade account in addition to your regular Blockbuster account
- You must sign up for a new trade account at every store you wish to trade at, even if using the same main account
- Trade-in credit can be placed onto your store account or onto a "Value" card
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- However, credit can be transferred from the store account to a card at any time
- Value cards can be used at any location
- Clerks at one store cannot see your trading/purchasing history at another store via your account
- Gamerush stores often do not get new game stock until the Friday of the release week, thus a few days later than most retailers
- Depending on state law you may or may not get sales tax added to your trade-ins (and thus get more than normal). You will always be charged sales tax where applicable on purchases, even when using credit from a Value card.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush vs. regular Blockbusters
All Blockbuster game-related discussion belongs here. Most threads created in the Deals forum will be merged in to here. There seems to be the impression by many CAGs that if they don't have a Gamerush store near them (see here for a list of GR stores: http://www.blockbuster.com/content/v.4.286.1.0/media/gameStoreList.pdf) then this thread does not apply to them. However, regular (non-GR) Blockbuster stores often run the same promos and generally have the same trade-in values. I'm going to elaborate on the last sentence as people apparently don't understand that when I say regular BB's have the same trade-in values as Gamerush that it means regular Blockbuster stores accept game trade-ins just like Gamerush stores.

The key differences:
- Only Gamerush stores sell used video game hardware and generally have a much wider selection of new hardware. Many regular BB stores had a PS3 bundle available over Christmas 2007 and since then they have expanded their hardware sales. As of right now (Dec 2008) most Blockbuster stores are selling PS3's, Xbox 360's, Wii's, and DS's. They do not sell PSP's. However, they have also started selling other electronics including Blu-ray players, portable DVD players, and digital picture frames. As a result of not selling used hardware, however, regular Blockbuster stores will not take hardware in for trades.

- Both Gamerush and regular Blockbuster stores take preorders for new games for a $5 deposit (or you can pay any other amount beyond that). Gamerush stores will get many more games in than the regular stores but unfortunately a preorder at either place is not a guarantee you will get the game. Sometimes they do not get certain titles in even if you preorder them months in advance. And even if they do get them, it tends to be a few days later than other stores.

- While many Gamerush stores have cut back on their new game stock, most regular (non-GR) Blockbusters have started selling new games. They usually have a very limited selection of top-selling new 360, PS3, and Wii games.

- Trade-in values are controlled centrally and are uniform across all Gamerush and Blockbuster locations EXCEPT if the Blockbuster is a franchise location. You can tell from the receipt if your store is a franchise store. All Gamerush stores are corporate-owned so they will have uniform pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Featured Preorders
Most Blockbuster stores (in addition to Gamerush stores of course) are featuring several games for preorder. $5 is required for a deposit. There are a few others in addition to what is listed below:

Multiplatform
Beatles Rock Band
Madden 10

:360:

:ps3:

:wii:

:ds:

They usually get these featured games in on release day like any other game retailer (though note - as of late they have been very bad about this and have gotten many games several days late!). Note that you can preorder just about any other game as the system will allow them to preorder anything they have listed (yes, even at regular stores). I have preordered Mario Super Sluggers and Dragon Quest IV myself even though they are not "featured" as preorders. However, if it is not a featured preorder they may or may not get it in, and it may arrive as late as Friday of the release week (postscript - Mario Super Sluggers did indeed arrive on Friday when every other store had it Tues. or Weds. and Dragon Quest IV never arrived).

Of course you can cancel a preorder at any time and get your deposit back or switch it to another game, even after the game comes out. So don't worry about preordering something they might not get - you can always switch it to something else. However, since I've always used credit for purchasing things at Blockbuster I'm not sure how they would handle a cancellation of a cash deposit. They may simply issue a credit to your account so beware of that if placing a cash deposit on a preorder.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Trade-In Deals
There are no trade-in deals at this time nor have there been for a very very long time. They did however just recently cut down all their trade-in values to Gamestop-like levels (but without deals to make them more appealing as at GS).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade-In Values
Trade-in price quotes will now be maintained by CAG Friend of Sonic in the THIRD post of this thread. The second post will continue to highlight specific games used to transfer credit from Blockbuster to Gamestop and vice versa.

Trade-in prices are usually universal at both Blockbuster and Gamerush, but can be wildly different at franchise Blockbuster stores. Used game prices change on Sunday with trade-in price drops following the next day (Monday). Thus any quotes given in this thread will almost certainly be good through Sunday of the current week. If you want to be sure to get the same value another CAG has reported then do your trading by Sunday as the price may drop on Monday.

Also note that many stores will no longer accept video games without cover art. This is the official policy for DVD trade-ins but apparently many clerks will confuse the two and not allow it for games either. Just beware that it might be a hassle if you have a disc-only game to trade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush website
The old Gamerush web site is now defunct, but the following link will take you to Blockbuster online, which may or may not have some info there about games. I dunno - I haven't looked at it in years.
Yeah it appears that way. The downside of having the used games in the plastic cases is that you'll have no way of finding out if it has a manual or not until you try to purchase the game. Trying to explain to the cashier after he or she struggles to pop open the case that you'd rather pass on purchasing it because it isn't complete is a bit troublesome in my experience.
I removed this. Sorry for start a debate.

The second Raving Rabbids on the Wii was my favorite of the multiplayer series. I like TV Party when it first came out, but the replay of it wore off quite quickly. We still play the games on RRR2 and if we play TV Party we only play for a bit before we get bored.

If you see a Boom Blox, I would recommend that. There are probably others that escape me right now.

Eh read up on it. I loved the first RRR on wii. I expected the second to be better, but...it wasn't, for what I wanted out of it. The first seemed so experimental with the wii and for a launch title, 3/4 of the mini-games seemed to utilize the remote very well. They started dropping pointer/motion controls for the 2nd game and I was unimpressed. The humor and difference in controls were the main reasons I enjoyed the first.

With most of the games down to button presses in the sequel they were just "eh" mini-games. TV party supports the balance board, which I don't own, so I've never really played it. Wasn't sure if I would be missing out by not having the board.
I think it just depends on the store. The BBV by my house just puts out the empty case with a barcode and price sticker, while the store closest to my work has the full game in the plastic coffins like you described.
mine just recently started putting all the used games in sleeves... and they're in considerably worse condition than any other used games I bought there when they used to leave them in the cases. it's also a waste of time for them to have to dig all the games out... so idk

Wrong thread, but you should be fine. They only throw a hissy fit if it's a different UPC, and GH versions tend to be the same UPC.

I checked my closest BBV today for anything new on the BOGO sale table and found jack and shit as expected.

Either they did no conversions or they did them early and El Hoardo swooped in and grabbed all dem shitz.

Oh well. Not like I needed anything from this sale anyway.

thanks. i thought it'd be ok to post here b/c the commentary in this thread has been so excellent. it does relate to this thread in that i scored infamous and metallica for $14.99 at blockbuster 5 minutes ago. ymmv. thinking about going back for another infamous and ghostbusters ps3 for $15.

since you guys have been cool, thought i'd also add that beatles rock band dropped for 360 and wii today for $15. ps3 was still at $19.99

also noticed a new local pricing scheme: $16.99. some previous $14.99 games like red faction guerilla ps3 r going for $16.99 since they swapped it (and some others) out for infamous and ghostbusters. swapping prices might be ymmv though.

Thanks for the heads up, but every bit of that seems YMMV. I'd love Infamous to qualify for the B1G1, and I would buy it ASAP, but I checked about an hour ago and it seemed to still be priced at $19.99. Do you know if the computer rung it up for $14.99? Or did an associate have to mark it down?

infamous was scanned and it rang up $14.99. but yeah, this was the only store i found today that had infamous at that price (i went to 3 diff blockbusters today).

Seriously...ugh...should I risk looking around to find a copy for $14.99?

They looked it up or scanned the barcode? Did they read the title or did they just scan scan, total, discount, etc, and charged you? It could've had a wrong barcode on. I'm not positive on the price myself but if it's in the computer, it's not ymmv, it's either 19.99 or 14.99(or whatever) at all corporate locations.

I just called my local BBV. (inb4ohnoucalledwaaaaaaaaah) The guy checked on the computer to check the price and quoted my $19.99. He had to have checked the computer, too, since I know they don't have any cordless phones at my BBV.

i don't remember but they had multiple copies at that price. i had to come home to check the trade in value for beatles rock band wii. so i'll pay better attention and let you know after i go back today.

Sounds like this may be a franchise store...

they claim it is not franchise. it just so happens that every blockbuster here sets their own prices. also, i think someone stole my beatles wii...or i was just imagining that i saw it earlier. anyway, i got the other infamous (that i hid behind alvin and the chipmunks movies) and ghostbusters ps3 for $14.99. still hella cool. can't wait to see if ghostbusters really does come close to an official ghostbusters 3 movie.

the clerk didn't scan the games this time aroumd.

Was this the same store where you got Killzone 2 for 14.99? I wish I lived near you because you're getting unique deals.
they claim it is not franchise. it just so happens that every blockbuster here sets their own prices. also, i think someone stole my beatles wii...or i was just imagining that i saw it earlier. anyway, i got the other infamous (that i hid behind alvin and the chipmunks movies) and ghostbusters ps3 for $14.99. still hella cool. can't wait to see if ghostbusters really does come close to an official ghostbusters 3 movie.

But they can't just "set their own prices" without being a franchise. Another difference in price there is that you got PS3 Ghostbusters for $14.99. That has been $9.99 at normal BBVs for a long time now - so at least you aren't getting everything cheaper ;).

yup! oahu, hawaii. usually i don't catch a break b/c of shipping costs so i don't order from newegg, frys, staples etc...but this is wicked!

update: amazon just upped their metallica ps3 trade in value to $20 from $12 w/in the last 2 hours.

I thought my stores would be cleaned out as I haven't been to a BBV at all for this sale.
But picked up 2 Dirt 2s and 4 RB Beatles at a little store on the way home.

Guess tomorrow I'll go to the giant "concept" store where half the place is videogames.

anybody know what the prices are for COD modern Warfare 1 or Call of Duty WAW on PS3?

my stores have been quoting me 2 different prices

i thought one of these qualified for the sale though

Dont forget to check the closing store (I think it's Parker/Preston). They had a LOAD of great titles, but their discount was only 10% when I was there. It should be 20-30% now. I probably wont go back there before they close, myself.

Are you referring to the concept store w/ the gas-station style concession stand off of El Dorado?

Gas station concession?
You mean the soda pop and candy bar one in Plano?
Hehe, I haven't been in a while, but El Dorado sounds familiar, Colony right?
I moved so I'm really close to that one now.

Parker and Preston?
I live on right off Parker.. hmm, I'll have to check.
I know the one on Josey and Hebron is already gone.

Wow I just went back to a store I hit during the 1st week of the sale and they had beautiful katamari and 3 - beatles rock band 360 on the shelves, among other things.

I got COD MW1 for 14.99$ for PS3 at a BBV in Lincoln Nebraska.

The CoD4 I bought was 14.99

yeah I had a hell of a time getting my stores to group them correctly. At a few I just told them fuck it and didnt' buy the $15 titles and only bought $10 ones because they were so strict about it being "their policy" that the cheaper ones have to be free. I even told them, okay, I'm going to walk out the door and come back and waste everyone's time making two separate transactions and they wouldn't even allow me to do that because it was "cheating the system". Bullshit.

Yeah, that was certainly worth losing a sale over. Not like that ship is sinking or anything!

it's the none goty edition right?

wondering if I should pick this up as part of the b1g1 sale b4 it ends

or wait to find the GOTY edition

any suggestions anybody?

@GS (difficult - Medium)
Just tell them you got a shity case/etc and ask if you can swap.
I even brought a BBV case with the yellow page with text and they get me a case with artwork and manual. Very cool.

There are so many GSs around that even if they reject you, you evetntually find one that does for you.

I totally did this for getting complete BRB for the BBY trades. I ended up with 6 of 12 copies that were incomplete. What I ended up doing was buying a couple used copies that I knew were complete from GS. Then snag the manual and then bring it to the next store and say you just realized it didn't come with a manual and they will pretty much always give you one. It helped that I had the receipt. Then, when I was done, I just returned the used copies I had bought and voila free game manuals.

Doesnt everyone here do this?? i do this like 5-6 times a week, why stop at Manuals though, might as well take the original art and case, and just throw it in a Blank CD case, bring it to different GS, and voila. you can actually make good profit doing this with rare games, Ive done t many times with Ico and MVC2, those cases and manuals go for $10-$20 without a disc

I hope you forgot your tag on purpose for this post. If not, I think you should step it up and just start stealing big ticket items like refrigerators.

The CoD4 original edition is the same as the game of the year version. It used to contain a code for DLC but no longer does...

Wow, that's stealing. I'm all for the occassional game flip but this is not cool. This is why companies are going out of business!!!

That's some pretty shady shit.

But yeah, I stopped by a franchise BBV and they were more than willing to give me a couple of manuals. Asking politely works sometimes ;).

They stopped giving out the map pack code with GOTY versions of the game a long while back, so there is no gain between the two.

nothing is off limits when it comes to gamestop with all the bulls*** they pull. from "gutted" games, to there ridiculously long lines for no reason other than the fact they push reserves and subscriptions with no regard for anyone else in the store, all they care about is there "numbers".the only thiefs are gamestop themselves when they make their "trade in 2 great games that came out like last week and give us another $20 and well give you THIS WEEKS great game" or The DS trade in deal, where You trade in your less than yaer old DS and another $100 for the latest shiny new DS that will surely become the "old" Ds in 6 months to a year.
Wow people really sound appalled, didnt even mention a straight GS disc swap. you know, buy the game from Blockbuster, pawn shop etc its scratched, so you buy it from gamestop and return the scratched one as "defective". in my eyes thats worse. Like when a gamestop employee looks you right in the eyes and tells you "yeah , MLB 2k9, its a great baseball game, that Will be 59.99. now would you like to reserve anything else while youre here"

You don't need to shop there and as the old saying goes, two wrongs don't make a right.

Besides the trade 2 +20 deal can be taken advantage of, just like this B1G1 sale is mainly a good deal thanks to GameStop and other trade in places. This is Cheapassgame. Not Cheapthiefgamer. We use the system to our advantage, we don't ignore the system for our advantage. We'll some do as you pointed out, but that is not what CAG is about.

Two wrongs don't make a right. It's one thing to take a gamble with Gamestop's website, not get a complete copy and swap it out for a complete one in-store. It's a whole other thing to buy a game at a Gamestop and take the cases and manuals of the same game at every surrounding Gamestop so you can make a buck or two. When you're taking those, you're potentially turning away sales from people like me who wouldn't want just the disk. Yeah, return fraud is wrong, that's obvious. It's also equally as wrong to lie to an employee so they'll give you something you don't deserve for free. It's wrong and you know it.

Another thing is that Gamestop never MAKES you do anything they offer you. If they offer you a reserve or a PRP, it's because they have to. It's part of their job. Besides, it's not like what they're offering is useless. Sure, you may not want to warranty your game if you keep them all in excellent condition, but for people with little kids it's a fantastic deal. Don't take it as an insult.

And about the trade-in deals, Gamestop has had some very good deals with them recently, the tiered deals especially. I'll admit, a lot of times the "Trade 2 Get ______" deals have some ridiculous titles on them. But for us CAGs, we more often than not can find ways to buy and flip games for said promotion to our advantage, anyway. The same thing goes for a lot of promotions. And for those who aren't trying to make a profit, if they want to trade in their old, worn DS towards a new one, who cares? It's their choice, and to them it IS a great deal. It's not all about Gamestop trying to get your money.

It just seems to me like you're trying to pick apart Gamestop from any angle you can. If you asked an employee about Rogue Warrior and they told you it was a horrible game, and that you shouldn't get it, you'd come back here and whine about how it's not his place to question your taste in games or turn down a sale. And if he told you it was okay and you should consider buying it, you'd come back here and whine about how the mean old Gamestop employee tried to sell you a horrible game. Before you keep bashing Gamestop, think about this- if it were really all about numbers, would they let you keep coming into their stores and letting you take their cases and manuals? Of course not. Both corporate and the employees (for the most part) obviously care about customer satisfaction. And it's that generosity that people like you take advantage of, and come to places like this to brag about it. If you want to be a thief, go for it. Nothing anyone can say will make you stop. But don't go around bashing a good company because you know how to lie and steal from them.
