Welcome to the Official CAG Blockbuster/Gamerush video game deal thread.

June 25th - July 1st, 50% off used games $19.99 and under

See here for the deal: http://www.blockbuster.com/stores

There used to be a coupon to print for it, but now stores should have the bar code to scan at the register.  If not, show them their own web page (above) and maybe they will figure it out.

See BlockbusterGuy's thread for a list of titles eligible under (and commonly found at BBV) for the promo:

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/topic/310423-blockbuster-video-4th-of-july-sale-bogo/

Coming July 2nd: B1G1 free on games $29.99 and under

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note that anything below here might be out of date. To be honest, I have no idea if Blockbuster even takes games for trade-in any more!

What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos, post any trade-in values you have obtained, and discuss new and used game selection and availability. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Blockbuster store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (BBVto Amazon to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from BBV.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blockbuster Game Trading Info
- You must sign up for a trade account in addition to your regular Blockbuster account
- You must sign up for a new trade account at every store you wish to trade at, even if using the same main account
- Trade-in credit will be placed onto your store account
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- Clerks at one store cannot see your trading/purchasing history at another store via your account
- Depending on state law you may or may not get sales tax added to your trade-ins (and thus get more than normal). You will always be charged sales tax where applicable on purchases.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Trade-In Deals
There are no trade-in deals at this time nor have there been for a very very long time. They did however just recently cut down all their trade-in values to Gamestop-like levels (but without deals to make them more appealing as at GS).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade-In Values

Trade-in prices are usually universal at Blockbuster, but can be wildly different at franchise Blockbuster stores. Used game prices change on Monday. We are not currently sure when trade-in values get updated but a few years ago it used to be on Mondays. Any quotes given in this thread may thus be good through Sunday of the current week. If you want to be sure to get the same value another CAG has reported then do your trading by Sunday as the price may drop on Monday.

Also note that many stores will no longer accept video games without cover art. This is the official policy for DVD trade-ins but apparently many clerks will confuse the two and not allow it for games either. Just beware that it might be a hassle if you have a disc-only game to trade.

I know its probably been asked before but do you have to be a Blockbuster member to buy?

The closest Blockbuster is like 20 minutes away so a membership isn't feasible

No. You don't have to be a Blockbuster member to buy preowned games/movies. But by this point in the sale you'll have a hard time finding anything of real value left.

I went to exchange a game at Blockbuster and got a small paper with my receipt that said the pass was cancelled today, and my benefits will terminate on 1-2-12. I hope it's not because they are closing.

Sounds like you didn't ask them the cancel the pass correct? It's weird they wouldn't mention it. I would just ask them next time u go in. I know some stores just got notice today.

Nope, I didn't ask to cancel. I'll ask next time I'm in there. They haven't put out any new games to rent in a few weeks.

I would say that's a sign of closing. I work at one that is closing/being converted into an oultet store for a month, and we didn't get anything past the AC:R/Saint's Row 3/Zelda week. We've gotten hardly any of newer movies as well, but that's also due to lapsed agreement with studios and us having to go buy them. This mainly results in customers getting angry at us that we don't have anything in stock, and we're still not allowed to tell them we are closing (I think we can starting tomorrow though).

I'm not too worried job wise because I am attending grad school next year, and I have a transfer in place. But this is now second time I worked at a closing video store (used to work HWV during my undergrad when they went out of business). The sell-off everything sales attract terrible and angry people. Not really looking forward to next month.

Is there any easy way of checking what Blockbuster stores in an area are closing? Managers at non-closing stores always seem to be completely clueless about what is happening in their area. Is there a corporate number I could call and ask?

Best bet I've seen is to keep checking the store locator on Blockbuster's website and see if any of your stores disappear from it. That's how I found out that another 1-2 of the local ones here had closed.

what i have found that the games on this sale are not in gaming section so always ask the cashier. i walked out of few BB thinking they had no game only to go back and find huge selections

Has anyone gone into a BBV where the employees are clueless about the 3/$15, picked up 3 $15 games and had the promo automatically applied? Most of the BBVs near me have no idea about the 3/$15 and so I don't want them to scan three games at the counter and watch them ring up as $45 only for me to make some lame excuse and get out of there.
what i have found that the games on this sale are not in gaming section so always ask the cashier. i walked out of few BB thinking they had no game only to go back and find huge selections
so what does that have to do with what the person is asking?
got 23 games for 123 and flipped them all for 205 can't beat that.
I can. ;) I bought about 20-25 games for $150 at the beginning of the sale and flipped them for $375.:D:booty:

On topic, when I bought the five pack I did earlier today the guy at the counter had to manually deduct $5 to get the bundle to come up $24.99. It came up $29.99 in their system still. Yet they had up signs all over for the revised 3/$15 5/$25 dealie.
Roughly 300-350 more store closings.
Sad to hear that. Had great memories of BBV. I remember the good old days of $99 Video Tape Rental and rent 5 get 1 free with BBV rewards.
Roughly 300-350 more store closings.
That sucks. How many stores did the chain have left after the ones that liquidated and the ones that just straight up packed their shit up to send to other stores, turned out the lights and locked the doors behind them?
Roughly 300-350 more store closings.
Yeah 2 of the 3 stores near me got the hammer today including the one closest to me. Oh well, at least the manager let me pick some games that he only had 1 copy of for rental and apply it to the 5 for 25 sale...seeing as they wont be renting games anymore after this week.

I'm going to miss Blockbuster for their in-store new release rentals. Instead I am stuck with Gamefly and their huge selection of games I cant rent because they are low availability (or their refusal to actually send me any game immediately when it says available and i have an open slot".
Hey hb i just thougt of something. What If the bbv you work at gets closed ? This thread (and your job) would be a goner and that would be very upsetting to us here :(
Was thinking the same thing since HB is the one that made all this info available. I can't imagine how it would feel when the majority of the thread talks about how they will no longer be saving a couple of bucks when at the same time hundreds could be losing their jobs.
Roughly 300-350 more store closings.
This news makes me sad. The ~5 stores closest to me closed down during the last round. I saw that a few employees got moved to stores that were still open, so I hope that they don't have to go through tense process again.

As always, thanks for your stellar contributions to this thread.
Roughly 300-350 more store closings.
Wow, so how many does that leave? Isn't that near half or at least 1/3 of what was left?

I went up to the store I had credit left and picked up a few games just to use that $4 up... Got WWE 2011 PS3, MAG, and Diddy Kong Racing DS. Yeah, a pretty odd selection but there you go. They actually had a few other games I considered getting - looked like no one had touched them since about 10 days ago when I was last in there. Of course it didn't help that they didn't advertize the new $14.99/$24.99 pricing.

Found out today that mine is getting the axe. Starting liquidation on the 27th. So I cancelled my game pass (they wanted to transfer it to a BBV 10 more miles away!) and cashed out my 25 in credit for a gift card. Their used game collection has been raped since this sale began so I'll spend my credit at another BBV this weekend. Oh how I'll miss my BBV and gamepass.....

After this latest round of closings Bbv will be down to around 1200 stores. We were at about 1550 before this.

We used to get what they call the message of the week and back in sept they would always talk about how they planned to open smaller stores and stores within stores. We havent had a message of the week for over a month now updating us on what is going on.

damn 2 of mine got the hammer ....they are like down the street from eachother i figured they would get the axe

my main store i think wont go away since its far from the others and always busy

I've noticed with this round of closings many of the employees state that their store is being closed due to the landlord either raising rent or unwilling to budge on lowering the rent. The same info was used during the Hollywood Video closure. Is that info BS?

The one that closed most recently said the same thing.

Dish Network may just be in part picking what stores go by figuring out which stores simply have the most overhead (and rentican typically be one of the biggest overheads depending on where you are).
Wow bbv must be doing ok in my area. Still have 7 in my little city.
That is what Im thinking about the Kansas City Northland. Just in the Northland we have 6. Ones on the Kansas side have closed but the Northland doesn't seem to be affected.

Just snagged 007:wii: Goldeneye:wii: and WWE 11 :360: brought $34 at gamestop. My store is official out of any $14.99 or cheaper games other than Bioshock 2 and Duke Nukem

They told me the same thing at my local store a couple of weeks ago about 2 other stores in the district. So it could be partially true - that is, they are closing all these stores and it makes sense to close the ones with high rent/overhead. But it does seem like they (the local employees) knew about some of this even before the big announcement. Hopefully those are the same stores that are closing (ie, there isn't a bunch closing because of rent issues and another big group closing for other reasons).

I just wanted to say thanks to this board and this thread, I picked up Fallout:New Vegas :ps3:, Star Wars:The Force Unleashed 2 :ps3:, and Soul Caliber IV :ps3: for $15 and they still gave me the $5 gift card. Loving this board. You guys are doing god's work.

Damn. Found out the closest BBV is closing. Last day for rentals in Sunday and then they will stop having the sale and go to the liquidation process. I'm honestly kind of shocked because they were always busy, but knew it was coming due to the crazy shortened hours. I guess another store that is a bit out of the way is also on the way out, which is only disappointing to my CAGness because it was the store that always had a few hidden gems.

overheard the lady at my blockbuster saying they're closing again next month (they had closed previously for a few months and re-opened... don't know if that'll be the same case this time). she said they had the best numbers in the region or w.e but that it didn't matter since this is a low populated area and regardless of how good they are doing, all blockbusters were being closed in this area. definitely bummed to hear that since I've gotten so many good deals there over the years.
My Blockbuster only sells used PS2/XBOX games. I've never seen recent games on sale there.

I'd love to get in on this if I could.
Damn. Where do you live? Must be a franchise store or something.

Probably building and operating costs. Might have the best numbers but still not profitable.

^^^ i'm in the same situation too. my hometown one was closed along with the next closest store and the only one I have is a 30 min drive, but good thing that my work place is only 30 second drive to that store.

Traded in Hunted: The Demon's Forget today for $17, and tried to get a $20 PSN card with the store credit. The cashier said I can't do that, is this true?

I have also purchased XBL Points with store credit from selling a game. So, I have to agree with ivos: unless this is something new, you should be able to buy the cards.
