I also might be interested in starting to collect comics. I'm really into Marvel, and it was only a matter of time before I started. I do have a few questions, though.
1. I think my best bet would be to start in the Ultimate Marvel Universe, but I'm not sure. I think there are too many old sidestories, alternate stories, new plots, etc. to keep track of while still keeping up with current stuff (not to mention the sheer amount of money it would take to get really old stuff). Therefore, I believe I should start in a fresh "universe" which started pretty recently. Am I making the right decision?
2. Is Ultimate Marvel going to be the foundation for the new generation, or is it just a short side project? As in, are they following DC's example with One Year Later and killing off the old series of comics, only to continue with this? Will the Civil War and other major plot points happen in the Ultimate universe or the older universe?
3. Are the trade paperbacks worth anything? I've seen older comics go for a ton of money, but I'm not sure if these would go for similar prices. It'd make collecting them a hell of a lot easier, but I'm not sure if they're worth the money.
4. I have extremely old Casper, Richie Rich, Archie, and Illustrated Classics comics that my grandparents gave to me. They're pretty tattered, but I was still wondering if they were worth much.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The Ultimate Marvel U are all gateway comics. You start out buying Ultimate Spider-man twice a month or Ultimate X-men once a month and the next thing you know your hitting up half price books looking for cheap comics just so you can get your fix until wednesday's new comic day.
I know how it works, it happened to me.
