What about Spawn? I used to love that book when I was younger. They're gonna start a series of TPB collecting the earlier issues of the series. Vol. 1 is already out.

Also, is Black Hole good? What about Deathnote or Dragon's Head?

Deathnote (Manga) I've only heard good things about.
Black Hole was just a weird book to me.
No clue on Dragons head.

Spawn... Not my cup of tea (and I hate tea) but for some people its still good/interesting. They started a new storyline in 150 which makes for a good jumping on point.

I was sitting in Caribou reading Teen Titans and the whole time everyone probably thought I was chemically imbalanced because I was laughing the whole time. I just kept thinking about the brokeback titans. Nigel, you were right, there was something about it that made it seem like they were ready to get it on.

I also picked up Detective Comics 817 because I skipped it last week. Holy crap is it good. Batman and Robin together again! Two-face is a normal looking guy now? One Yeay Later really does look like a great new starting point.

The third comic I bought this week was Ultimate Spider-man. All I can say is, its back! After that last storyline I wasn't sure if I wanted to even read Ultimate Spidey anymore but this issue totally brought me back. Beginning to end it was just a great read, perfect balance of superhero spidey and regular life peter parker. Also Ultimate Deadpool, fuckING BADASS!!!!! I remember reading that they were brining him in quite a few months ago and it totally exceeded my expectations.

Wow...Astonishing 13 was amazingly awesome. Lots of good background on Emma and what she's been doing. Though Phoenix showing up at the end was a bit unexpected.
Hula hoop guy :)
Yeah, X-men villians are better in both the 616 and the Ultimate U. Spidey just has villian envy.
Wow...Astonishing 13 was amazingly awesome. Lots of good background on Emma and what she's been doing. Though Phoenix showing up at the end was a bit unexpected.
That was Emma being a complete bitch :)

Phoenix showing up was unexpected? What about Charles's sister, Cassandra Nova still being alive? (Yet in X-men The End, she's a hero...)

Who knows what's going on really.

X-Men: Phoenix Rising TPB collects is the story of HOW Jean Grey became the Phoenix, right? I know The Dark Phoenix Saga is a separate story collected in another book, but I'd like to read how she became the Phoenix.

Phoenix rising is basically the beginning of X-Factor vol 1. It's ok. What want is Marvel Masterworks: Uncanny X-Men Vol. 2 or Essential XMen.

For anyone who reads sentinel I just finished it off and it ended fairly well. I'm really far behind with my comics, dying to get IC #5. Oh has anyone else checked out Apocolypse vs Dracula, it looks like it could get really good.
I also might be interested in starting to collect comics. I'm really into Marvel, and it was only a matter of time before I started. I do have a few questions, though.

1. I think my best bet would be to start in the Ultimate Marvel Universe, but I'm not sure. I think there are too many old sidestories, alternate stories, new plots, etc. to keep track of while still keeping up with current stuff (not to mention the sheer amount of money it would take to get really old stuff). Therefore, I believe I should start in a fresh "universe" which started pretty recently. Am I making the right decision?

2. Is Ultimate Marvel going to be the foundation for the new generation, or is it just a short side project? As in, are they following DC's example with One Year Later and killing off the old series of comics, only to continue with this? Will the Civil War and other major plot points happen in the Ultimate universe or the older universe?

3. Are the trade paperbacks worth anything? I've seen older comics go for a ton of money, but I'm not sure if these would go for similar prices. It'd make collecting them a hell of a lot easier, but I'm not sure if they're worth the money.

4. I have extremely old Casper, Richie Rich, Archie, and Illustrated Classics comics that my grandparents gave to me. They're pretty tattered, but I was still wondering if they were worth much.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Ultimate Marvel U are all gateway comics. You start out buying Ultimate Spider-man twice a month or Ultimate X-men once a month and the next thing you know your hitting up half price books looking for cheap comics just so you can get your fix until wednesday's new comic day.

I know how it works, it happened to me.
Can anyone else throw out a little information?
Can anyone else throw out a little information?
I should have also answered your #2 there. Ultimate Marvel U is here to stay, some of Marvel's best selling titles are Ultimate-based titles so they aren't going to get rid of it. I think its brought in a lot of new comic fans because of how easy it is to catch up, given that its only 5 years old rather than, what, 40-50+ years of history.

I'll answer #3.
Usually Trades aren't more than sticker price unless they go out of print. It's very good for reading and if you want to sell them to could get 50- 75% of the money back. But it's more the for reading.

Awesome. That saves me a ton of time and money.

Well, I might as well get the trade books anyway. I'm mainly in it for the reading, so the book values would just be an added bonus.

Thanks guys.

Gothca. Some books I'm looking at:

Marvel Masterworks: Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1-5
Marvel Masterworks: Uncanny X-Men Vol 1-5
Marvel Masterworks: X-Men Vol. 1-4
Spider-Man: The Death of Gwen Stacy

Does the Dark Phoenix TPB overlap with any of those X-men books?

Trades go out of print too and can become more expensive to get than the actual comics they reprinted. For example Batman: Legacy Nightwing Rough Justice and Blind Justice are impossible to find in TPB. Batgirl Silent Running is getting up there in price too. There are a few Marvel trades like that too, for example Ruins and the Last Avengers story. Those are quite pricey. The Hardcovers get really expensive too like Superman/Batman volume 1 and 2 or the Sandman Hardcovers.

evanft: The Dark Phoenix saga does not overlap into any other books. That was well before the times of crossovers LOL! I would suggest this too, go and get the X-men Classics with the backup stories or find the collections with them in it. They really help understand what they tried to pull later with the Phoenix and Jean.

Opinions?

Astro City is a great read. It doesn't have the most dynamic art but the writing is incredible. It's very clear that Kurt Busiek has a large amount of respect and appreciation for the comics medium. Also, you might want to check out Ministry of Space by Warren Ellis and Chris Weston. Weston is doing the pencils on Fantastic Four: First Family which, I think, just shipped it's first issue if you want to get an idea of what his art looks like.

Also if you liked Warren Ellis's writing, don't forget to check out Global Frequency. It's a limited 12-issue series so finding its trade shouldn't be that difficult.

It's definitely good but just a fair warning, there is a different penciler for each issue which, depending how important the art is to you, can be really distracting.

I think story's probably a little more important than art for me.

But, the again, I could look at Alex Ross' work all day, even if the story was about potty training.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I'm open to manga suggestions.

While neocisco is correct about the art, don't let it detract you from the awesome story, trust me. Honestly, I only like 3 out of the 12 issues based on art alone but storywise, I like all of them. The one I liked least is issue 5 - Big Sky and even then, the dialogue is very well written, especially the magician's.

If you wanna go manga, Death Note is highly recommended. If you like the slice of life stuff with lil to no action, try out Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (rough translation: Record of a Yokohama Shopping Trip). Full Metal Alchemist is quite good (some would argue even better than the anime as it takes different turns from show). Of course, there's the stalwarts - Bleach & Naruto... more Bleach than Naruto at this point. If you like sports manga with a street fighter twist (serve - joke only makes sense if you read): Prince of Tennis. For mech action, try Full Metal Panic. Twisted comedy, go for Azumanga Daioh or Pani Poni Dash (my sig).

EDIT: that Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou is actually a bit more difficult to find in your local B & N. Fortunately, I have a link to a translated version of it:

I finally got around to listening to one of the About Heroes' (www.aboutheroes.com) webcasts (#8). Good stuff!

It was kind of long and it delved into a bit of manga stuff (which I found kind of boring) but it covered a lot of interesting topics. In their defense though, it seemed like they don't discuss manga very often. What I liked about it was that it didn't get into the whiny fanboyness like you see on places like newsarama. Almost all positive stuff and the little bit of negativity was more of a "constructive criticism" type of thing. It also covered a decent amount of current Marvel and DC stuff with no obvious bias toward either one.

I'd say its more interesting than the CAGcast, but I think that would be kind of taboo. ;) To defend this assertion I think its based more on the medium being discussed. Comics are made to be discussed and fleshed out. Video games, on the other hand, aren't quite as open to interpretation and therefore the discussion won't be as robust.

I do like trade paperback for some titles. I enjoyed The Walking Dead, by Kirkman and I bought the first two trade paperbacks. The story was very engrossing and I couldn't put it down. I really liked being able to read a bulk of issues in one sitting. I also purchased the Invincible HC collection. That is a great comic! It was very good story telling and I enjoyed being able to read issue after issue without having to be interrupted waiting for the next monthly issue to come out.

For some comics, I will not wait for the trades. For example, Infinite Crisis and the 1 year later titles.

The 1 year later concept has me hooked. I bought about 5 titles and 4 of them were 1 Year Later titles. I had not a single Marvel title in my pile. DC has done a good job marketing this 1 year later concept. All of my friends have been talking about it and are picking up titles they normally don't pick up. I for one picked up Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis and I am going to get Catwoman (a title I never really got into).

I look forward to Marvel's Civil War. I don't really think that I will be picking up titles that crossover with the mini series. I will still collect the titles I normally get (Captain America, New Avengers, Ultimates, Astonishing X-Men, and Moon Knight).

Hey, this is totally out of the current comic scene.. but does anyone know when the Robins were killed by Joker? i cant seem to remember the numbers or the series name...

I know I've asked this before, but I'm too lazy to search for it ;)

Are ANY of the other X titles worth picking up and getting into? Obviously I doubt any are as good as Astonishing, but I crave more X-men besides the issue of Astonishing I get every other month.

Read Runaways. It's like another x-men team...sort of. The only other x-men book I was showing some interest in was New X-men, just because it was dealing with the HoM fallout from inside the school

I had been disappointed with Uncanny and regular X-Men for a while but lately they've been turning around. In regular X-men they're building up the return of Apocolypse. A couple of X-men (past and present) have actually aligned themselves with him, one of which is as shocking as Angel joining Apocolypse was. Let's just say he's a familiar X-face.

In Uncanny, they're doing the "End of Greys" storyline. Basically, without giving away too much, the Shi'ar are once again attempting to rid the galaxy of the Phoenix force and any potential hosts. This time though, they've taken it to an ENTIRELY different level and its definetly gone too far. They did one interesting issue in this storyline in which the entire issue took place in less than 1 minute. It sounds cheesy but it actually came off kind of cool.

Another X-title which is kind of fun if you like suspense type stuff is X-factor. A definite film noir feel to it with some fun lighthearted moments mixed in there. I'd like to tell you about them but I wouldn't want to spoil the fun.

As you mentioned, Astonishing is pretty much the pinacle of X-titles right now. If you were to read just one X-title, I'd suggest that one.

hehe, sounds like someone hasn't been reading about everyone's favorite residential Crime Alley doctor.

My other question is whether my favorite X-man is in any of the comics right now. Is Psylocke in any of them? Cause I've always found her a fascinating character, with all the Kwannon/Revanche stuff. I was reading about Apoc showing up in X-Men and it sounded interesting.

She's currently in Uncanny and New Excalibur but I don't think she's a permanent addition to New Excalibur.
Well she was in Uncanny until New Excalibur started and then she switched to there. It seems as if she might be coming back to the X-Men but at this point but there's no way to know for sure.
Hmmm...I might look into reading X-Men sometime then. I always love whenever Apoc shows up, and like I said, I've been craving more X-Men than just the one issue of Astonishing every other month. I love Astonishing though.

I really don't see the appeal with the X-Men. Don't get me wrong, I love Astonishing X-Men, Mark Millar's Wolverine Run, and Morrison's run on X-Men.

Someone stated that it was strange that even though most the Marvel Mutants were wiped out, there are more Mutant related titles than ever.

You quoted me before I looked at my issues and changed my assertion. I only have the first 3 issues of New Excalibur so I'm not sure if she stuck around very long in there.

Its probably because each X-men has about as rich of a history as say Batman for example. There's a lot of titles because there's so much to flesh out. Even with a lot of mutants being wiped out, there's still quite a few left. I can't even think of how many active X-men there still are at this point. With so many different X-men, its easy to appeal to a wide variety of people because there's always somebody for you to identify with. If you like a by the book leader, there's Cyclops. The woman whom has saved the day many times but still no one trusts, Emma Frost (former qhite queen). The killer with his own set of morals, Wolverine. The jokester, Iceman. The heartwarming, struggling reforming villian, Juggernaut (which I must say, they have done an EXCELLENT job of storytelling with). And so on...

I've always had a soft spot for the X-men since I got hooked on them because of the Fox cartoon. I've since learned that the cartoons didn't follow anything in the comics (with the exception of the dark phoenix which was damn near spot on except for a few parts, and the ending of course) but the X-men still hold a nostalgia factor to me. That and the fact that pretty much all my top 5 favorite comic book characters are X-men (or X-related) doesn't hurt either.
You quoted me before I looked at my issues and changed my assertion. I only have the first 3 issues of New Excalibur so I'm not sure if she stuck around very long in there.
Yeah, but I figure for now, just having Apoc in it is enough to get me interested.

As far as why I find the appeal of X-Men, I dunno. I've just grown up with X-Men, so it's always been my favorite. I've always found the characters a lot more appealing than some characters in other comics. And since I grew up in the age when I'm pretty sure Marvel was better than DC (or at least more prevelant), that's why I'll always be a Marvel fan first. I could never really get into the DC stories. Though I've always been able to get into Batman comics.

EDIT: Yeah. What RedvsBlue said for the most part. I got hooked in by the cartoon and I really do think most of my favorite comic characters are from the X-Universe also. The Cycs, the Wolverines, the Emmas, the Cables, the Apocs. They just keep coming.
