Re:Savage - the dude had people throwing drinks at him in his FIRST MATCH. Well, ok, not his first match ever, but plenty of those fans were seeing him for the first time. Guy knew how to get over.
One of the weird things for me on the Savage set was the Alfred Hayes commentary. I've always noticed weird things here and there with him whenever he was on the announce team, this was no different. The guy went wayyyy overboard in praising Hogan during his entrance on the first Hogan-Savage match on the set. While he may have been instructed to put him over as the best champion ever, Hayes overdoes it totally, repeating more the concept that all other champions of the past and present can't compare to Hogan - forget comparing him to Flair, he may as well have come out and said "BOB BACKLUND IS A PIECE OF SHIT. BRUNO SAMMARTINO IS WORTHLESS" - and Bruno was still with the company at the time.
Other thing that I found funny was him suggesting that every time he held Liz in front of him to stop the attacking face, she was in on it and it was a strategy they had planned out. Kind of a neat swerve to think about - evil, power-hungry Eiizabeth costing one of his opponents a title or something - but it really would have seemed out of place in the 80's WWF.
I was thinking a while back...obviously no one is going to be able to duplicate Savage's act at this point, but I was trying to come up with who, in current wrestling, is closest to him in "spirit" or whatever. There really isn't anyone. Don't say Jay Lethal. Edge is the closest I can come up with and he's not that close. Slightly smaller guy who is capable of very good matches, can come off like a nut without overdoing it, and can pull of a decent crazy promo.
