The Darkness - Gen Discussion & Info

I just beat the game last night, and I must say that I'm very impressed. The game didn't really start picking up for me until Chapter 2, but after that I was having a blast.

Awesome story and gameplay.

I gave the game a 2 day rental, beat it in a day and a half of heavy playing (due to 4th of July and my girlfriend having a lot of hours this week). I enjoyed it quite a bit but it does have it's flaws. I'd give it a 7.5/10.

Pros:

- Great graphics and environments
- Awesome audio and voice acting
- Tight controls and fun gameplay
- Spooky Darkness voices
- Good pacing

Cons:

- Buggy at times
- Terrible multiplayer
- No Mans Land segments are no fun
- Boring weapons
- The Darkness serves no major purpose and felt tacked on (I barely used any of it's powers)

It's definite rental material, but a damn good rental.

Well good for you, but the rest of us like to get enjoyment out of our games and take advantage of the features presented to us.

*Flame Suit on* I'm going to agree to this. After my own hype wore off, I started liking it less. If you strip the darkness powers away, to me it felt like a standard, slow moving FPS. The weapons lacked power, small level design, and as a light gamer, I got tired of reading street maps. Yup I said it.

I'm in no way saying its a bad game, its just not for me. I went back to playing FEAR and enjoyed it more.

I just finished it today myself and I loved the story more then anything. The production values were through the roof.....even the loading screens. The No Man Land areas were my favorite because they were a lot harder with you having to take out hearts to finish goons. The other sections became way to easy after you get "black hole". I still give it high marks and its a must play imo

LOL I had to restart a checkpoint becuase I couldn't get up from couch with Jenny. But at least I got an acheivement from it:cool:

So is anybody here actually playing the multiplayer modes? I'd love to try it out with some fellow CAGs, maybe get some of the multiplayer achivements while I'm at it.

I played some multiplayer the other morning just to burn through some of the achievements before I return it, but when I tried tonight it was buggy as hell. Whenever I moved it twitched like crazy and seemed to amplify any control command. A tiny tap on the sticks would spin me out of control and into walls.

The human games aren't too bad as they sorta remind me of a less fun timesplitters, but the darkling shit is just annoying.

Jenny?

And it's to kill a mockingbird.. and you can get up and leave.

Yeah, it's pretty unplayable. So fuckin' laggy in every match for some reason. Well, and it's not particularly fun either.

Good thing I only wanted it for single player.
multiplayer = no... stay away from it it's so horrible!!!!
its actually quite fun if you get into a game with friends and a host with a good connection. When I first tried playing this game online I was pissed as hell 1 out of 4 games would be playable. But now I just host them and invite all my friends, they say they barely ever have lag in my games. So if you get a bunch of people with decent connections it is actually a fun game. Lag occurs a lot less if you cap your games at 6 players instead of 8 also.

Either way starbreeze needs to make a patch to fix this shit. Also the glitched hard mode achievement. Neither my roommate nor I got this achievement after beating hard and we were pissed.

Does this game make people nauseous? I'm thinking of pick it up; Far Cry and Quake 4 for 360 and Red Steel and CoD3 for Wii make me nauseous.

i dont get nauseous with games usually and i didnt with this one.
Yep. It was discussed at basically the beginning of the game. Not sure how he missed it.
So then what was it? I remember Jackie mentioning to Jenny that the money he was supposed to pick up wasn't there, but that wouldn't explain why Paulie would want to kill him. So what am I missing here?

That's reason B, which we later find out (and mentioned, numerously) stems from reason A: Paulie's paranoia.

Paulie was paranoid that Jackie was after his spot.

I just finished it tonight (yeah, I'm slow). Amazing game.. but short. I'm definitely going to have to hunt down some of the comics now. Top Cow made a fan.

garth ennis was one of the creators originally, and he has great stuff. I highly recommend Authority: Kev and More Kev, though they are super different from this...

Yep, the very little I've read from Ennis is great.. I've been reading Midnighter's solo comic since it came out. I was tempted to pick up those newer Authority comics, but I know they're not Ennis.. I might have to pick up the ones you recommended, though. Thanks.
Can someone explain to me the point of the sidequests? I've lookedo n Gamefaqs, but nobody mentions why you should do them.
Achievements/lengthen the game/to enjoy yourself.

Also to break up the nonstop violence. It's nice to take a break from killing every once in a while to just talk to people and help them out.

Beat it last night. Great game. Could have used 1-2 more chapters, but overall, very satisfying. Just gotta head back and clean up on the single player achievements I didn't get. Not sure if I'll bother with the MP ones.

The weapons are so stupid in this game. The only weapons I found useful were the Pistols... the rifles were unaccurate as shit.

And did anyone sit through the whole To Kill a Mockinbird movie?

I watched 30 mins in, then I got distracted. Is it the whole movie?

I found the assault rifles to be very accurate. Popped guys in the head when their melon wasn't much bigger than the recticle.

Also, I'm pretty sure that every movie is full length. It mentions something during the ending credits about them being edited to achieve an appropriate rating (strange since they are all pretty innocuous).

That's basically all I used. I didn't mind. I preferred my darkness powers anyway. Most games focus on crazy ass guns. Having pistols being the main focus was a nice change of pace.

You watched 30 minutes of it? Damn, I watched like 2.. then I got up and left.

Man this game's short. I'm nearly done with it. And what's up with the buggy glitched fillled lagged up as hell multiplayer. I get on a game I can't even move around the level.

We don't talk about the multiplayer. It's the ugly child that never should have been.

I've actually managed to get into one fun multiplayer game.. It was darklings versus darklings, and there was no glitching. Albeit it was only fun for about 5 minutes, but that's the max it would seem.

I watched the movie for a long time, but only because i was doing something on the computer and curious to when it would end....

i got up before it ever finished though, so thats a very nice little touch to the game

I think they said late July.

I finished the game the other day and immediately rebooted Chapter 5 on hard. Wasn't too difficult. Restarted Chapter 1 yesterday on hard and that's a different story, only having your pistols. Makes you realize how much you rely on your darkness powers later on in the game.

I just finished it. It is a good game and I enjoyed plaing it, But I was expecting more from this game. Don't ask me what I was expecting.

I have really no intrest in the game at first though I pick up the demo and now I'm in love. Anyways, I really should of pick it up when it was DotD not to long ago. I will pick this one up for sure eventhough it short I don't always mind that.
Can someone explain to me the point of the sidequests? I've lookedo n Gamefaqs, but nobody mentions why you should do them.
Lol there really isn't a point, it's just a diversion and a way to get more lasting value out of it. You get achievements for doing them, so why not?

I find lately 8-10 hours for the main game is perfect, imo, because generally the achievements often double that time. That puts the game at a nice 18-20 hour clip which is perfect.

Once you start getting into the 20 hour games and doubling that time you hardly have time to play as many games.

just finished this game, for the first hour i was annoyed at the floaty controls, but after i got used to it, i totally got sucked in. I really liked this game overall!

Well I just got it today from Goozex and Wow! Really loving this one. I just beat Bioshock and I think this is just as interesting. Loving the fact I can play first person shooters with kick ass stories. I am only about 1-2 in, but it's so much fun. I found some parts to be rather tough. I kept dying, maybe once I start getting of the power I will become more of a force to be wecking with.

Soooooo. I got this game in a trade. I'm considering trading it in for some credit. I have MP3 to deal with, so IDK if I have time for this. Should I wait and play it, or take advantage of it's relatively high trade-in value now? ($33)

I'll give it a shot then I guess, if I don't beat it by next week though, to GC it goes. The demo was really fun...but it doesn't seem like there's much depth to the gameplay.
