The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - 11/11/11
I've heard all the hype about this game, is it worth getting for a newbie to the elder scrolls world? or should I get oblivion first?
I would recommend playing Oblivion first because if you try it after Skyrim, you may not enjoy it as much.
So how do you invest in stores, and how do you get married? I can't figure it out for the life of me, and google isn't helping either.
I believe the ability to invest in stores is a speech perk. As for marriage, you need to head over to Riften and visit the Shrine of Mara. You'll also need an Amulet of Mara to talk to potential spouses.

I bought this the other day but havent played it yet. I guess I am waiting for a nice 3 day weekend or so to really sink my teeth in.
1 second would only work if you can manage to one shot with the bow... right? which would require a sneak - bow 3x damage, good bow, +archery bonuses and such.
No, you don't need sneak at all. 1 second soul trap works well if it's the kill-shot. Can whittle them down however you want and then hit 'em with whatever weapon you enchant to finish 'em off.

I just chose a 1 second enchantment so I could have a ton of charges, and also wouldn't matter to me dumping a few arrows into them once I get them close to dying. Any one of those hits will soul trap 'em.

Ahhh good point.

anyways possible spoilers, (beginning of thieves guild quests)

So you have to get money from the 3 people, get them to pay debts. Well, the pawn shop guy acted tough so I killed him. and then his woman tried stepping in so I killed her too, and then guards showed up so I killed them, and then more guards. Long story short, there were like 10+ bodies on the ground at the end of this. I said whatever, I'm getting tired of being nice to everyone and then they just smart mouth me. Didn't bother reloading, went on to the next person on the list. I go into this bar sort of place and some little prick runs at me with a dagger and keeps trying to stab me, I casted fire breath on him and aggrod the whole room. I killed the one guy I think but now these three "Asgeir Snow-shads" or something like that are unkillable and are following me everywhere.... maybe I should just reload? lol

edit: my bounty for the rift is now at 12,165 gold.... these people will not stop running at me
is there a specific strategy to kill elder dragons? i deal with normal dragons no problem (am at 41 now, was able to recover my game with an earlier save i didnt know i had), but elder dragons just one shot me some how.... even in full dragon scale armor and everything :\
For Elder dragons I would say you need to get your enchantment up and enchant your items to resist fire/frost

I got my enchantment to hundred and put magic resistance with fire and frost resistance as well on my boots, necklace, and ring as only items I could put resist on and now elder dragons breath on me and don't do much now its great.

I think I broke the game again.

Tried to start the companions questline right after acquiring the services of Lydia. Dude from the companions wants to test me in combat. We go to the backyard and start fighting. Lydia jumps to my aid. Dude sheathes his sword and says something like, "Fight your own battles" then pulls his sword out again, gets in one swing on me before Lydia continues attacking him, repeat into infinity. No one's getting killed but I can't do anything to stop him from trying to duel me or her from attacking him.

Seriously, why did they release a game without any playtesting? How is that okay? This is both the best and the worst game I've ever played all at the same time.

i generally make a point to save often, and usually 2-3 saves incase something happens.

as for releasing the game w/out fixing everything? to make the 11/11/11 release date. i'm sure there's bugs that their playtesters also didn't run into...a lot of playtesters are highschool and college kids all sitting in a room with a modded console/pc and a digital recording device. it's not a cool a job as they make it sound.
Seriously, why did they release a game without any playtesting? How is that okay? This is both the best and the worst game I've ever played all at the same time.
Do you realize how big of a game this is? You're bound to run into some bugs, it's not like they didn't playtest the game whatsoever. Running into one bug and then claiming they must've not tested the game whatsoever is a huge assumption.

I always tend to save right before situations like that just in case. I kind of wish there was a way to quicksave considering how often I do, but it helps to do it anyway. Anyone have any idea if there's a way to delete saves? I might just be missing the way to do it, but I sometimes hit New Save instead of my older save, which results in a bunch of seperate saves all over the place.

I haven't looked in-game, but you can usually do this through your hard drive option on the dashboard as well and delete individual saves.

for the purpose of trying to think like the hero, i've told hirelings to wait inside/outside before something sensitive is about to occur.

i've run into a few bugs, some annoying some humorous...i just chalk it up as a strange occurrance in the world filled w/magic and mystery.

Why haven't you tried reloading to an earlier save or better yet the auto save created when you entered their HQ and dismissed her before you even started the questline? Sounds like an easy fix for a relatively minor problem.

Panda - You can delete saves in game. It's either the Y or X button. I can't recall at the moment though with the text as small as it is for SD it's a miracle I can read anything at any point in time.

The only real bugs I have seen that make me nervous are people/items falling through the ground and items getting stuck to surfaces.

Other than that it's been great (to me).

Anyone have any idea if there's a way to delete saves?

When you pause the game and go to load/save, on the bottom left corner of the screen it says "X" to Delete .

I was being facetious when I said that they didn't bug test the game at all. I do think that they missed some huge things that I don't think should have been overlooked. You get Lydia in the same town that the companions run their group out of, how did no one notice that she goes nuts during the practice fight?

I actually already have the answer to my question. The answer is that they didn't care because they figured people would find workarounds. And yes, there are workarounds but the onus should be on the developer to keep us as players out of game-breaking situations, not on us as players to adjust how we're going about our business in order to avoid potential weird conflicts that they didn't feel like fixing.

Having spent a grand total of over 200 hours in Oblivion and Fallout 3, and at least 40 in Morrowind before that, I am well aware of how big these games are. Bethesda should know it even better than I do which is what makes the glitches/bugs/randomness I keep running into even less forgivable.

My housecarl is my bodyguard. If I initiate a training session with someone, she should know, "That's okay, they're just practicing." Instead, I get to reload an earlier save and try to avoid upsetting the delicate game by unrealistically ditching my bodyguard inside a building while I duel someone.

It's lazy and it's about to get the game sold. My hopes were sky-high for Skyrim (har-har) and I've been disappointed several times in a grand total of maybe 12 hours of play across two different characters.

funny bug: walking towards a tower in the middle of skyrim I see an axe and shield slowly floating from the ground into the air...and then vanishing into the sky.

other funny bug: I had just assassinated a bandit and closed the door so the other ones in the compound wouldn't see me. a rabbit happened to be jumping towards the door and ended up hopping up the door and over into the compound.

whatever bug: slain dragon's magically reappear from where they were slain towards entrances to the towns nearby. I walk out of town and I just see the bones flop infront of me and I just say...hrmm...curbside delivery it seems.

overall it's been a great experience and I forget about those things and just continue to enjoy skyrim.

1 bug I don;t mind is absorbing a dragon soul during a fight and after.

1 bug I hate is the framerate issues that have been getting worse since my save file has passed 7 mb.

11mb atm and climbing

Start talking about bugs, then suddenly a bug pops up.

Can't finish a simple fetch quest- "Return to Grace" in Solitude.

Pretty much all I have to do is pick up an Amulet and return it for a few gold pieces.

-Already have my own Amulet with the same name, after picking it up it shows two in my inventory.
-Can't remove/unequip either as they are now quest items.
-Turned in the mission and it doesn't complete and still shows up on the quest log.
-PLUS, when I go to the "Misc" section, the marker keeps moving up to the top all by itself if I try to go below that quest, so now I can't select anything under it.

Glad I saved about 15 minutes before that.

This is probably just me, but I feel as if the game is getting a bit boring after about 15 hours in. Granted, this is the first ever TES game I've ever played so maybe I can't fully appreciate it yet. However, it feels as if a lot of the sidequests/caves/dungeons/enemies are the same. I'm pretty sure the majority of the quests I've found are to kill a group of bandits or bandit leader. I think at least 75% of the enemies I've killed are bandits... Also, all of the dungeons/caves look so damn similar that it almost feels as if I'm going to the same one each time.

/rant

Don't get me wrong, I love this game and can't believe I never gave TES series a shot. Through the first 12 or so hours I was hooked and felt like it was one of the greatest games I've played. But now I'm starting to notice some of the things from above and it's taking away from the experience. I played today for about an hour and didn't really feel like playing any further.

Maybe I need to get deeper into the game?

ran into a common almost rage quitting skill bug. after completing a specific quest my archery skill dropped from 58 to 15 and it's displayed in red. being immune to disease i went to a shrine and still nothing. after some research on other forums, once you lvl up the effected skill it will go back to normal. this has been common with archery, 1h, 2h, etc. So, don't flip out and restart from the beginning...just make a save, and go try and grind out the skill that's afflicted (aka bugged from quest)

Don't ever play Oblivion then, you'll REALLY be bored! I think the variety of dungeons that I've come across are great. No complaints there!

I've run into a bug in the 1st dungeon that I've gone into! The golden claw mission, I was supossed to turn some pillars and I go up to the pillars and I hit activate pillar and nothing happens, they won't turn. I tried to reload and save numerous times and still nothing..

I might just wait for the patch.

Keep in mind you have to hit A on each individual section of the circles to change the animal. It's the bear, butterfly, owl pillar, right? You have to hit each circle to change the animal and then hit Activate Pillar to see if your combination was right.

I unfortunately found out that while this smaller TV I got here is better for shooters and everything, Skyrim is much more enjoyable on as big of a TV as possible. Bleh. Regardless, loving the game so far.

beth said patch to be issued after thanksgiving (or shortly after)...so, hopefully it fixes stuff that we both encountered and didn't even know about.

as for killing mostly bandits...i'm sure if this was middle earth we'd be sent to kill a lot of orcs and goblins. if more side missions were killing fantastic creatures or undead it wouldn't seem so special or rare. bandits are common and a common problem to travellers.

I think I ran into that bug once and fixed it by drinking a simple cure disease potion after visiting a shrine. Weird it worked considering I was a
werewolf
at the time, but eh I can't complain.

I don't believe it's a disease bug, it's a particular quest line that once you reach a certain level of progress with it, it's been known to happen...it doesn't seem to affect my actual archery skill as i'm still able to unlock perks, it just seems to be a visual display bug in the skill menu. i'll train with Aella and see if it fixes itself.

janessa with all glass armor, shield, wpn, and a scaled helm (with horns) looks badass in dimly lit areas.

well, I'm a full fledged vampire now... not really sure how it happened, but I guess I kept waiting / sleeping too much and let it get out of control. I don't even know how I got it to begin with, but now I need to get rid of it as so far I've had to put down a few nice groups of hunters and a couple of named / normally friendly npcs do to them attacking on sight. so if anyone knows how to cure vampirism let me know please!

also I completely disagree with guy complaining about the dungeons in this game, the variety in dungeons is possibly my favorite new addition to elder scrolls, you can see the effort put into each one (i'm talking the serious ones, of course theres a few with not much in them and not much story to them), but theres some that have great back stories and great end bosses and rewards and everything. also some of the dungeons/caves are just staggering to look at, there's a lot of effort clearly put into making each a different experience and very little of it feels the same to me, I find myself clearing more and more just because of how different each one is.

Vampirism

According to the guide, you cure it by becoming a Werewolf or visiting the Mage Falion in Morthal (Vampirism cure quest).

Guide also says you can always become a Vampire again, but Lycanthropy is a one time thing.
I've been mega smithing iron daggers all day. Gotta get me that dragonscale
hope you're not disappointed...i took the journey and my dragon scale is folded up in a sack in my house. i'm still wearing glass armor because i wasn't too crazy on how fanstical it looked on me...maybe if i played a girl character it'd be more appealing. in the meantime, i'll need more dragon scales to upgrade the armor since the upgraded glass still offers a lot more AC, it's otherwise just a personal achievement.

yeah the dragonscale armor wasn't worth going so much out of my way to power level smithing to get it, personally. the glass armor definitely looks cooler, wish i spent more time with it

I already cured myself from the Werewolf thing. Looks like I'll seek out this mage then, thanks

I only played this for 2 nights via Redbox rental but I'll get it again someday but I have a question. Is there any reason to keep the dragon scales and teeth when you kill a dragon for smithing, etc. or should I just sell them? Had to give them to my follower for now because of how heavy they are (and I've only killed the first dragon via storyline quest.)

You can eventually build stuff with them. I've avoided spoilers for the most part so I don't know how good the gear is but yeah, you'll need it eventually.

The game has gotten better for me. I tend to run stealth builds when I have choices so I left Lydia at the house I bought in Whiterun. Just did a bounty mission which involved hunting down and killing a total of six bandits. None of them knew I was coming which made me feel like a medieval Sam Fisher. I look forward to more patches but thankfully, I've unbroken everything through some old saves and I can enjoy my random questing now.

You need them to smith the best armor (at least I think it is) in the game. But you could just get a house and store them in there. That's what I do for all of my alchemy ingredients and items for smithing and such.

Just hit the 72-hour mark for my character.

As much as I love being a Mage (and chose a High Elf because of it), Archery has definitely taken over as my preferred method of combat. Being able to do over 200 base damage with my bow/arrow on top of the usual 2x Sneak bonus I've been able to get with most dungeon enemies always makes for a good day

I feel like I should have picked a High Elf instead of a Dark Elf when it came to being a Mage, Dark Elf just looked cooler and still mentioned magic in the description so I figured it to be a better option. Is High Elf a better pick for a Mage?

The main difference between Dark Elf and High Elf is the class bonus (Resist Fire Damage vs Bonus Magicka, respectively).

Yep, High Elf has 50% extra magicka from the start (which ends up being 50 extra points from the start), but are vulnerable to magic and particurarly fire, which can really pain you during dragon fights or against fire-based wizards.

Dark Elves are better fighters and are resistant to fire, but are difficult to turn into really powerful mages.

So is there any need for the gems that you collect? I've been keeping them in my house, and I could really use the money...
So is there any need for the gems that you collect? I've been keeping them in my house, and I could really use the money...
What kind of gems you talking about?

Soul Gems, yes. Eventually you will probably need to recharge magical weapons, so they are useful.

Rubies, emeralds, and other high-prices jewels can be used to make very expensive and profitable jewelery that, while useless to you, can be sold for nice money.

If you're talking about amethysts (spelling might not be right), then you can sell them without care as far as I know. They fetch a good price and aren't too uncommon, so can be a good money-maker. If you have FLAWLESS amethysts, try to keep them since they are very hard to come by and there is a quest that requires 3 in I believe Riften.

Yeah, I was talking about rubies and amethysts. Thanks, I'll have to check that out, then.

I guess I should put this in a spoiler, to make sure I don't upset anyone. Nothing quest related though, so don't worry too much.

The dog you can buy, Vigilance, is just garbage. Dies too easily, does too little damage, and can't do anything but follow (very slowly) behind you and I suppose act as a decoy to enemies. Plus, he, like many other companions, run in front of you. Waste of 500 gold, amirite!?

Wow, the quest to meet the Greybeards...

Turns wild on the way up the mountain. At one point I was dealing with a dragon, fighting an ice wraith and fighting an ice wolf at the same time. Things got easier when I retreated down the mtn and let the town largely deal with the dragon but wut da hell?

perhaps if the difficulty of the game was set to beginner (or novice, i dont know the setting) you might see a better return on your investment...but what's the fun in that?

A little late to the party, but I'll give some of my random thoughts. I'm level 38 at the moment and have mostly been running around doing sidequests and a little plot.

I like the smithing (Though with the leveling system as it is, seems too....easy), alchemy, and enchanting (Sooo much less annoying). Cooking feels like it was supposed to have a skill. As it is, is kind of useless but was fun to play with until I realized that.

Too easy! I am playing on normal but I feel like a physical god. I tend to build my characters melee, especially on a first playthrough and I've been putting 100% of levels into health and choosing perks for damage and defense, but geez. Earlier today I felt like raising my block so I stood there tanking hits from a giant until I raised my block about 15 points, got bored and continued on my way. Magic can hurt me, but it's only a matter of time until I enchant all my gear to be resist magic. I'm waiting until my enchant skill is high enough to bother.

I like that enemies have a level range now, leveling with you was stupid but I don't think they went far enough in this direction. Early on it was cool that was there stuff I just couldn't beat, but eventually....see above.

Lost of character classes. I thought this would bother me, but the way skills are done, it ends up not really mattering. I just wish there were more of them (skills).

Magic is a pain to use. I hate the system and only use it when I'm looking to raise a few skills.

The story and general atmosphere is MUCH improved from Oblivion. The atmosphere is one area that has blown away Daggerfall and Morrowind. I love the random snippets of conversation, random comments based on the state of your character, etc. The outdoors looks beautiful.

Humans looks a little less....disturbing but for some reason Bethesda still can't make a decent human face.

Werewolf feels tacked on and fairly useless. Haven't tried vampire.

In general still feels massively dumbed down Daggerfall/Morrowind.

No stats. This fills me with more rage than I can describe. If we keep heading in this direction the next one will be a fantasy style FPS and not an RPG anymore....

Despite the complaints I am enjoying Skyrim. I can get lost for days of playtime not doing the main plot and that's always a good sign to me. I do fear that the replayability is going to be limited but I am enjoying the ride while it lasts.
