The General 360 Owners/Buyers FAQ Thread (Updated 1/15/10)

If you still want to go wireless, the original xbox wireless adapter works great with the 360. I got mine off Amazon for $35 and it works great.

I used the 50' Cat6 cable from monoprice to plug straight into my 360 from my router. It is MUCH better than trying to use the wireless adapter. When I got a PS3, I just got a cheap switch and have both hooked up wired to my router. It works great.

Couple things to wrap up this thread:

  • I really like the orignal XBOX regular wireless adaptor for $35 as an option... does this really work?? I've not heard of the old adaptor as being an option.
  • Are my Netflix going to play ok with a wireless? Really, this is all I'm going to be using it for (maybe very very light gaming). So, if it games ok but my Netflix are poor, that's not gonna work for me.
  • Last, I am estimating my distance at closer to 60' - 70' ... sounds like most people are saying the degradation shouldn't be too bad if I go cable?
Thank you everyone for your advice thus far :D!!

I really don't suggest using the wireless adapter for gaming or Netflix since unless you are fairly close to your router (which you say you are not), your signal will tend to be fairly poor (coming from a couple friends I play with on LIVE). I personally have a 75 foot cable running underneath the house from the router to my room and still actually have a decent amount of cable to spare, I would say I am right around the same distance from my router that you are and I get a great connection still.

I've been playing on Live and watching steam videos on xbox 360 wirelessly with the Official Adapter with no lag whatsoever. I alway have 3-full bars signal in COD4.

How far away from your router are you though? It really depends on the distance and if there is a lot of things that could block the signal. By the way, you do realize 3 bars is only decent for CoD 4, 4 bars is the best and I get a constant 4 unless it is a poor host using my cable.

my router is about twenty feet away, but i'm going to have to do some snaking around some obstacles... so probably fifty feet, if i go cable. there is one wall in between the xbox and router.

Will simply keeping the Xbox on for a long time increase the likelihood of an RROD? Or is it mainly continuous disc access that contributes to it?

See, I want to run a customized slideshow overnight, because I'm in the process of "breaking in" a new plasma TV. There's a DVD version of the slideshow available, but I'm assuming it's much better for the Xbox to just stream JPEGs over the network. Do I have the right idea, or is either option pretty unhealthy?

Does your plasma TV have an SD card reader? If it does that's the way to go.

[quote name='willardhaven']Does your plasma TV have an SD card reader? If my SD card's USB adapter works, then I'll definitely go that route. Good call!

my 360 will not read discs. I don't even get any kind of error it just simply will act as if there is no disc in the console. Any suggestions?

Alt Cnrl Delte lol, nah sorry man I haven't a clue. This sorta happened to me with a past system, thought my games were dvd movies?! Sounds like a repair to me.:whistle2:#

Did you try using a cleaner kit? Just something made to clean CD audio or DVD systems will work. Usually it's basically a disc with a brush built onto the surface to clean the lens.

May or may not solve the problem.

I agree. My first 360 did that with certain games, and was replaced with a 360 that wouldn't read ANYTHING. Third time (3 months later) was the charm.

Not sure if this is the right thread, but I'll give it a go anyway:

Last night my Xbox 360 suddenly froze on me mid-way through a game of Left 4 Dead. I turned it off, signed back in, and started the game over and after a few minutes, it happened again. I turned off the system once more and when I turned it back on, it froze immediately. It now freezes the second it is turned on, so quickly that the Xbox 360 logo isn't even fully displayed. The lights on the front of the unit aren't red and just look normal except that it can't recognize my controller anymore. I think this might be an overheating error so I moved the unit and the power supply to an open space and still have the same problem. I even removed the hard drive and the game and still nothing.

I went online to www.xbox.com to register for a repair (this would be the third one after two RROD) and found out that it's going to cost $100 to get it fixed. I'm sure I'm not the only person here that feels cheated to have to pay $100 to fix something that may be a problem with the faulty harddrives of the 360. I suppose the reason I'm posting here is just to get an idea of what I could do. Should I try to call Microsoft and see if I can somehow get the repair done cheaper? I don't have a warranty anymore since I've had the unit for over three years and have had two repairs in that timeframe, both of which were covered by MS. I've considered buying a new unit but to give MS even MORE of my $$$ is just out of the question right now, which is why I don't want to pay $100 to fix it.

I'm really just looking for advice, possible solutions I haven't thought of, etc. Like I said, I don't know if this is an overheating issue or something having to do with the faulty 360.

What's with the different game cases?

I've seen at least 3 kinds of single-disc case for 360 games.

1. solid spindle (Call of Duty 4 Regular)

2. Wii/PS2-style (Half-Life Orange Box, CoD4 GotY)

3. Yin-Yang style (Prince of Persia)

Why the heck do they make so many different case types?

I have a question about the Best Buy extended warranty in regards to the Xbox 360.

Previously, Best Buy's product replacement plan allowed you to bring in a defective 360 and exchange it for a brand new 360 in-store. But now I've been hearing that Best Buy has implemented a new extended warranty program as of September 2008 that any defective 360 will now be sent out to get repaired instead of being exchanged for a new 360.

If I had bought the product replacement plan well before September 2008 and it doesn't expire until April 2009, will I run into any problems if I bring in my defective 360 into Best Buy right now and try to exchange it for a new 360 (under the guidelines of the warranty I originally signed up for), or will Best Buy try to make me send it for repairs under the new warranty plan?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you bought the old warranty plan, you should get the old warranty service. The new rules only apply to new plans. Also AFAIK if you renew your old plan, you stay under the old rules.

My 360 came back today after going to Texas for repairs (RROD), and they actually sent me back my console, so I don't need to go through the crazy licensing fiasco. Everything seems to work fine EXCEPT the Rock Band 1 songs I brought into Rock Band 2. The songs are viewable on the drive when I check the memory on the dashboard, but they do not show up in Rock Band 2... what do i need to do?

Ok so I thought if you redownloaded everything you had bought with another console with download history you don't have trials when you are offline. I lost internet last night and all I could play were trials but that shouldnt be because I've taken the steps to negate this. Anyone?

Did a few searches, but I could find anything so I thought I'd just ask

My Elite started to RROD on me today. It happened for a few hours, so I went out with my roomates to get some pizza. Came back and its fine now. But just in case it decides to start doing it again, I suppose sending it in to MS would be a good idea if it starts happening again. Anyways, in the event that I do, Im assuming that I'll recieve a black elite in return? I suppose I dont have much of a choice if MS did decide to send me a standard white one, but I wanted to get some sort of confirmation on it. Thanks

Is there anyway to have your gamertag on more than 1 HD at a time? I have two Xbox 360's and hauling the 60GB from system to system is a hassle. I tried loading my gamertag on the internal 256MB HD in addition to the 60GB HD, but then I have to go through the gamertag recovery process everytime I use the other console which takes at least 5 minutes.

Any suggestions or is moving the HD back and forth the only wayt to accomplish this goal?

Today, i went to best buy to exchange my halo xbox for an elite because of the red rings, i forgot to delete everything on the harddrive. So i changed my windows live password and added the xbox live pass code for my account. I left the account on auto-sign in....i hope best buy doesn't resell the harddrive...

THey have to wipe the drive. I'm pretty sure thats policy for every store. They don't want to sell a hd to some kid with porn on it. More than likely it gets sent to a place that refurbishes it and wipes the drive clean, just like Gamestop.

Thanks, now i don't have to worry about someone stealing my account.

As long as you recovered the account on your new console by re entering the information, the person who receives your old hard drive would have to enter your e-mail and password to gain access to the account. You're safe.

Depending on what happens to it, the drive might not get wiped, if they forget to do so.

I have a Halo Edition 360 and a Bestbuy warranty and my system is acting up so I'm thinking of using the warranty to exchange for a Resident Evil 5 Eilite, I just want to know did they give you any hassle when you returned it ? And did you return it in it's original box ? I lost my original box the system came in.

i gave everything back including the box, but i'm sure they would exchange it back even if you don't have the box. I don't know about the RE5 edition, they'll just give you an elite.

I'm pretty sure the two games you are going to get are way cheaper than smackdown and cod5. You have to buy two games and get something of equal price or lower for the free game. Meaning, you'll need to buy smackdown and cod5 and you could get another game equal or lower of those two.

yah, u cant get "any game free" its a game of equal or lesser value. if you could get any game, everyone would buy two copies of links crossbow training for 2.99 (or something like this) and get 55$ used games for free. good in theory, but it will never work.

Considering CoD5 is $29.99 this week at Kmart, that would be kind of a dumb one to get for "free", considering the amount you'd have to put out at Gamestop to get it.

I believe there is a Wiki or at least threads on the major threads on Game Deals where people tell what they got in cash after they traded their stuff in. Worst case scenario, you can call in EBGames for a quote on some stuff you have -- just ask that you have blah blah and wondering how much you can get for it.

All in all, just by a first glance, I would say you have enough. I think your Xbox360 w/h 20GB HD and the two wireless controllers alone is ~$110.

EDIT:

You will find this thread of interest. It's the Gamestop Trade-In Thread, and there's a whole list of the trade-in values of games, accessories, systems, etc..

Thanks a lot that answered a lot of my questions. Do you think i would be able to trade in the 360 without the hdd and still get the elite? Because i want to transfer all of my data(save games and etc) to the elite. Or maybe somewhere i could get a cheap memory unit that i could hold that stuff on.
thanks

Will deleting my Catan data help fix my "broken" achievements. I cant get the 10 longest road achevement even though I know I've gotten it more than 10, and now I'm pass 30 wins (300 pts there, plus a good 50 losses which I estimate should be worth 5 each) and still havent gotten the 250 Victory Pts achievment. So if I delete my data, will redownloading it get me my achievements once I work towards it again? Or are they lost forever?

Assassin's Creed - $6
Call of Duty 3 - $3
Rock Band: AC/DC Track Pack - $6
20 GB HD - $18
Core unit + wireless controller - $80
Ethernet Cable - $0.75
Wireless Controller - $19.25
Cooling Fan - $1.25
PSP Slim Model 2000 - $65
Car Adapter - $2.50
1GB Memory Card - $4
USB Cable - $2
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - $8.75
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - $2.25
Madden NFL 2004 - $0.30
PS2 Slim Model - $25
8MB Memory Card - $4.50
8MB Memory Card - $4.50
All at gamestop or ebgames
$253.05 Not enough. Maybe if i add Halo 3, devil may cry 4, Rock band and rock band 2
Halo 3 - $12
Devil may cry 4?
Rock Band (game only) - $6
Rock Band Guitar - $4
Rock Band Mic - $4.25
Rock Band 2 (game only) - $20
add $46.25 and you get $299.30
still not there, guess i could tack on $8 for dmc 4 and ill have $307.30

I think ill hit up playntrade instead seeing as i do not want to part with my rock band 2 stuff. I suppose i could have gotten the tiered trade and gained an extra $28.92 and my total would be 336.22 and i still would not have the elite on trade in though i would probably pay the difference.. Ah well, maybe ill cash in on the next promo offer or..drumroll please.. play n trade would give me a better deal. oh well please if anyone knows how much i would get at playntrade please post even if it is for one of my things im willing to trade in.

How can you link the achievements/gamerscore from a Profile on your xbox with a Gamertag? I just helped my brother get set up and thought recovering a gamertag would associate with the profile but it didn't. He has two sets, one for the Profile and one for the Gamertag.
